The NHL Boxee App gets a facelift for the new season.

Hockey season started a few weeks ago and to commemorate we thought we’d celebrate with a new NHL GameCenter LIVE TM / NHL VaultTM App on Boxee. And for Hockey fans, our App Master Shawn has cooked up an amazing new app that takes advantage of all the great news and coverage that NHL® fans want.

Here’s a breakdown of how the new App pulls out all the stops for game day.

  • NEW INTERFACE - a totally overhauled interface that gives you access to so much more than just games
  • NEWS - get the latest headlines and stories news from NHL.com
  • GAME HIGHLIGHTS - See the highlight reel from games earlier today all the way back to the beginning of the pre-season.
  • ARCHIVE - Watch any game from the 2007-2008 season until now. Gloat all over again.
  • STANDINGS - See how your team is doing in their division and across the league including wins, losses, ties, points, goals, and more.
  • HIDE SCORES - We know that once you know the score, the games hardly worth watching. Boxee makes sure you know as much as you want to.
  • IMPROVED VIDEO - Our friends at the NHL have outdone themselves in providing an even higher quality video for every game.

If you’re not already a subscriber, you can try out NHL GameCenter LIVETM (for live games) - hours of game time each month for less than $20/month. It’s a no-brainer. All games are subject to blackouts and other restrictions. Check out Shawn’s handy-work below to fall in love with hockey all over again.

What about an app ESPN360 Center Ice service? There would be a big need for that. NHL Game Center is not available in Europe, instead they tell the European people to use the ESPN360 service:

“You can watch NHL online via the NHL Center Ice™ streaming package on ESPN360, which is now available in Europe (except Italy and Russia) and the Middle East. Fans can watch over 1000 live and on-demand games from the regular season, the playoffs and the Stanley Cup Final by selecting an NHL package within the ESPN360 player — go to: https://europe.espn360.com/espn360/nhl

Any idea on when an announcement for the release date for boxee box will be? The natives are getting restless.

  3. Stephen says:

It may be noteworthy to point out that if you do the $19.95 a month YOU ARE FORCED to pay it out until the end of the season. You have like 10 days to cancel but after that you can not cancel and will be forced to pay out the rest of the season. The price is outrageous and the restrictions are pretty bad. It certainly is not boxee’s fault and it is another wonderful application!!!! I just wish that the NHL would mirro MLB. You get twice as many games with MLB for $60 less…none the less, keep up the good work guys! Any word on whether NBA will jump on board??

  4. Looks great!!

I’ll tell you that as a Canadian, this app alone could sell thousands of Boxee boxes up here.

    • Brendan says:

It would sell a lot more if there weren’t regional restrictions in place by Gamecenter. If you’re in an NHL city, you won’t be able to watch your team’s games live from Gamecenter until 48 hours after the game. This is obviously not Boxee’s fault, but a definite drawback to Gamecenter and people looking to ditch cable.

I could easily get away without paying for TV if I could watch live games on Gamecenter.

  5. Ole Greg says:

Where can I download this app?

    • andrew kippen says:

if you’ve already got boxee, go into Apps, make sure the “App Library” is selected on the left side of the screen and then do a search for NHL. If you’ve got a NHL GameCenter account, you’ll be able to start watching things immediately.

  6. Chris C says:

Thats nice, what about netflix, hulu plus and amazon on demand?

    Hello?? (echo, echo, echo…)

  7. Jim says:

Would love to see a similar app for MLS and Premier League.

  8. Craig says:

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Watching the Red Wings games from yesterday right now! Wish I could pick the Detroit feed but at least Calgary has good announcers.

Any way to pick which feed we want?

No live games on today yet to test that out…

Love it being available — confirm NetFlix on the BoxeeBox and I’ll order mine!

    • Dan says:

I second this. It would be great to be able to do this, as you do have the option to switch feeds on some games on the NHL site.

Other than this though, this app is near-perfect. I’m watching Sharks and Blues right now, (Go Sharks!) and the quality is great, as is the ability to stop and rewind the games. I love that highlights have been added, this is great when I miss a game, but accidentally hear the score before I get a chance to watch the game.

    • Shawn says:

Craig, we are currently working with NHL to get a full integration with HTTP Live streaming (like mlb) and better control over what you watch and how you watch it (including choosing feeds). Currently this is not available in this version but we hope to add it as soon as we can!

  9. Charlie says:

Please please please work to get an app for the ESPN Centre Ice service. I’ve got a Boxee Box on pre-order over here in the UK, and this would make it 10 times more awesome!

  10. John says:

    Netflix PLEASE!

  11. Interested Montrealer says:

    Hey Andrew,

How about the ability to choose which feed you would like home or away. This option is a new feature on NHL.com, how come you guys didn’t incorporate it.

  12. çiftiz says:

How come the price in US dollars is the same in UK pounds???

  13. dbrenha says:

why isn’t Portugal on the list of pre-orders? it was mentioned before as one of the first countries.

    • andrew kippen says:

while most European countries will carry the Boxee Box, some of them are not yet set up for pre-orders. we’ll update the pre-order page (http://boxee.tv/preorder) as soon as that changes.

      • dbrenha says:

good, good, i was starting to think it wouldn’t be released here. I’ve already seen the boxee box on pixmania (france) so probably it will also come from there for Portugal.

  14. hrkac says:

Very much enjoying the updated app. But…is it just me or are you unable to start the feed until the actual game starts? Meaning you’ll miss the 5-7 minutes of pregame and probably the opening faceoff unless you have very good timing refreshing the games list.

  15. Jack says:

Very much enjoying the updated app.

  16. Interested Montrealer says:

how come Andrew never answers my questions?

  17. missNewtoBoxee says:

I have many movies on my computer stored as iso files will boxee box be able to play them on my home TV? Thanks for the input.

    • Duke says:

      Hey MissnewtoBoxee:

The codecs boxee includes allows many formats to be played on your TV. ISO is one of them. I am buying this to play those hardware intensive MKV files (720/1080P rips) and of course all my other formats: xvid, divx, brrip, iso, vob, mpeg 2 etc… the list goes on. The boxee plays it all baby!

  18. Nially says:

    Netflix for Canada, please!
