I noticed Avner (my only current friend) had a TED talk video in "recommended" and I could view it. Is there anyway to add all incoming TED talks to my sources area?

I can't seem to get Ted working in the windows alpha. I can browse to Video however once I'm there I see hulu etc and no option for podcasts.

Just to chip in, after hacking about with Squid and iTunes Music Store, I managed to fish out the feed URL for the 480p version of the video feed:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/TedtalksHD

Much better than the one published on the site which is designed for iPods.

Could someone update this thread with how to add TED Talks on the latest boxee beta 0.9.21.12594?
None of the instructions here seem to apply anymore.

I found I can add feeds on the boxee website, but there is no "RSS Feed" application in my boxee:

Instructions at http://www.boxee.tv/feeds:
All of your feeds will appear in Boxee under the RSS Feeds application.

But I see no "RSS Feeds" app (there is "Video podcasts", but it seems to have a fixed list of feeds.)

UPDATE: Looks like if I search for "RSS" in the left hidden menu of "Apps", _then_ the "RSS Feeds" app shows. Otherwise, it wasn't in the list that shows when you click "Apps". WTF. oh well...

This thread dates back to the Alpha days, so nothing applies too well.

There is a dedicated TED app and the Boxee RSS app too. The TED app has been there since Alpha and the boxee RSS app has been there for many, many builds of Beta.

In the left menu there are two places for apps. 1-My Apps and 2-Apps Library. Both the TED and Boxee RSS should be in Apps Library until you add them to the My Apps section

What OS?

yep understood, but this thread is prominent on a google search for "TED talks boxee", so I thought it would be good to get an update here, since it wasn't obvious how to get TED on boxee now.

latest boxee beta 0.9.21.12594
on Windows XP SP3.

I did fix the problem by searching for RSS in the left menu under Apps, but it wasn't in the default list of icons under Apps:

I don't see a "left menu" at the frontend, or anything called "My Apps"... only the front end menu with "Apps", and the shortcuts below that. But I'll take another look when I get home tonight...

Would be nice to include at least the RSS reader app in the default list under "Apps"... :(

I don't think you understand. Both apps ARE in the latest build under App Library and have been for many, many months. ;)

I'm guessing you are not looking in the correct place for them. Also, the App library is where all Boxee approved apps are listed. It's a Library so you can check them out to see if you like them. If you do, then you click "add to My Apps" so only apps you luv and use a lot will show up there so you don't have to wade through hundreds of them each time.

Also, there are third party apps you can load under the "Repositories" section. Those too live only there and you can add the ones you like to MY APPS.

Hopefully this clears up how to use this part of Boxee. Below is a screen shot. You will See the tab for both My Apps and App Library. I also will show the Ted and Boxee RSS App there and how they are then in MY APPS after I added them there. ;)

This is on an XP Pro SP3 machine with boxee beta 12594.

with the default install, clicking "apps" in the front end menu shows me a smallish array of icons, about 30. none of which have RSS Reader.

The left menu is hidden at this point. and as a new user, I didn't know I need to expend it to click "App library". Yes, the default view I saw was "My Apps". Which didn't include the RSS Reader or TED...

Just saying... it's not intuitive, and for a new user, frusterating. _Now_ I know that I can show the App Library (and really, just now I found that, I didn't know before 2 minutes ago)...

A popup/tooltip would help new users with what is not obvious (but of course is obvious now that I know), is all I'm saying...

(thanks for your time explaining, and the screenshots, by the way, you really spelled it out for me. :) )

The orange tab with the arrow on the left side of the screen didin't pique your interest? :)

Yeah, it didn't... :) I didn't know what it was at first.

To be honest, it took me a while to pay much attention to it -- it's on most of Boxee screens and is definitely worth remembering that. I actually have the same problem with SageTV's interface -- its per screen option menu is also very useful but I keep forgetting about it nonetheless :p

The thing to remember is Boxee is really supposed to be used with a remote (I don't). So, many of the keys make things work.

Also, there is so much to do in each section (movies, tv, apps, music) there would have to be a pop out menu of some sort. ;).

Dunno, seems intuitive to me. But I'm strange. :D
