View Full Version : Boxee Alpha 0.9.14 release for all platforms (update: is now out)

July 15th, 2009, 11:02 AM
We just released an update for all platforms (from http://blog.boxee.tv):

We spent the last few weeks fixing bugs on Windows, Mac, Ubuntu and Apple TV. We had some stability issues related to the Boxee Browser and audio-playback, which caused quite a few crashes. We also put some more work into our website, so if you login you’ll see a whole new dashboard (make sure to try out the find friends feature to see who of your contacts is already using Boxee).

You can download the latest version for all platforms here (if you’re on Apple TV, then go to the menu and download the latest version).

The latest version includes the following new features:

Geo-based filtering of Apps - enables app developers to indicate in which countries the app works, so people who can’t access the content will not see it in the app box (the user can disable the filtering by going to Settings > Appearance > View options)

Adult content filter for Apps and RSS feeds - applications, RSS feeds and specific items can be marked as adult by the app developer. The user can control whether he’d like to see adult apps or not (default is hide adult content) by going to Settings > Appearance > View options.

List of unresolved videos - under browse there is now an option to view unresolved videos, there you will be able to view the latest video files boxee found on your home networks, but could not determine whether they are specific TV Shows or movies. You can use the “recognize” feature to try and manually tell boxee what this video is.

Squashed bugs:

Windows: crashes on ProjectM (still known issue with shutdown while playing music)
Windows: fullscreen toggle (still when going to windowed mode - the ratio is wrong and a user has to”drag” the window to fix it)
Windows: installer now removes obsolete dll-s in the flashplayer folder (those were crashing Flash playback when a user updated a previous install)
OS X: system’s screen saver was taking over with no way to remove it using the remote
Occasional deadlock when playing video and toggling between “now playing” screen and other screens
Occasional deadlock when starting to play something while something else is playing
When adding a feed default to “rss://” if nothing was specified
Python apps and scripts could corrupt one another while running in parallel (example: lyrics when playing from pandora)
Crashes, hangs and mem-leaks on image loading

Last, but not least there is a new support section on the boxee website, with FAQ, how-to and a growing knowledge base (http://support.boxee.tv).

This is definitely a happy end to a long day at work for me. Get to go home and install a new version of boxee. :D

Very nice, with this latest version my boxee can be set to open in fullscreen 720p on my secondary monitor. Means I can now open it with the remote and it'll be on the right screen without moving it with the mouse.

Thanks boxee devs! I like how you have a support site and 'known issues' list now too.

Edit: I forgot to ask, is there any news on the remote ir server built in to boxee? Will it work now with eventghost or do we have to keep emulating keypresses? (Windows version)

Keep up the good work, boxee is a lot of fun. It would be nice though if you could distribute a deb package for 64bit Linux. I dont want to drop down to 4GB of ram just to watch TV.

July 16th, 2009, 12:07 AM
I'd love to see a 64bit binary as well. But in the mean time, you can just install the 32bit binary in 64bit ubuntu, then use getlibs to make sure you have all the needed 32bit libs. Is a little more manual process, but it works fine.

Dare I ask about Netflix for Windows? oO

Dare I ask about Netflix for Windows? oO

I'd kinda like to know where they are with Netflix too. However I know they've been busy with the massive amount of bugs lately so I'm ok with things. I'd rather have a working Netflix than a rushed version that seizures out and crashes something. :)

Btw guys, brilliant work on List of unresolved videos. That makes my life a TON easier.

Getting better and better... :)

Installed on both jaunty and intrepid with no difficulty - I appreciate the new notice in the application itself providing feedback that there is a new version.

Can also confirm it fixes the issue of some applications appearing twice and I echo the appreciation of the new "unresolved videos" interface.

Couple issues:

1) The new update, like the last one, obliterated my apps folder. So for apps that I am currently developing, I have to set them up again manually. Not a big thing to set up, but a little discourteous for an "update" process.

2) Audio volume is still low on most movies and TV shows. The issue is presented in this thread: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=622&highlight=volume+low and this bug in JIRA: http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-2552. Would be helpful to get some guidance on when this pervasive problem will be fixed.

Thanks for the quick release!

Just updated on Ubuntu 9.04 - I can confirm Pandora is stable! Before, I couldn't advance past a couple songs before it would crash.

Big thanks to the team!

Great work. Prior to this release, I had to keep all my video on 5 USB drives hanging off the ATV because I couldn't share them off my MAC Pro to the ATV without even simple AVI's stuttering. (all wired network). Suddenly with this last version, the networking works great even streaming DVD's over the network from the Mac Pro to the ATV. Now, all the media is happily on my Mac Pro where it should have been! So much easier to manage the libraries.

I DL'ed and installed the latest Windows update. 9.14.6993 but looking at the settings inside boxee afterward the version is listed as 9.14.6987.

Any ideas on this or is it just a typo in the settings area?
