View Full Version : Comics.com - Comics & Editorial Cartoons!

First version is out now (http://dir.unboxeed.com)! Below are some teaser images of where things are right now. I just love comics as it reminds me of being a little kid reading them at the breakfast table. I used the classic "Peanuts" for these images.

Also note that some features have not made it into the initial release (viewing similar comics, advanced sharing, basic settings, etc); been so busy lately with other things in life. A later release will add those things. The app will support all comics and editorial cartoons from comics.com (around 154 different toons in total!) except for Dilbert. Dilbert for whatever reason is the only comic that has a special site for comics.com. I'll work on adding support for it later.

nice! can't wait for this, there are not enough picture apps.

hrm, think i should do an xkcd app... that would only take a few hours to throw together.

being able to recommend xkcd comics would be awesome.

I'd love to see an xkcd app, I'd definitely use it. One of my favorite online comics along with cyanide & happiness (http://www.explosm.net).

One of the positives about doing an xkcd app is that he provides a nice rss feed that isn't horribly formatted. That's the problem I ran into with comics.com as their feeds aren't really configurable at all and are all over the place in terms of being compatible with anything. So basically I'm running a cron every night to scrape their latest data and generating my own feeds.

Standards fail. :)

Very nice!

A thought re: custom rss feeds
I can see that many of the default apps have rss feeds hosted on boxee.tv .
For an app developer that doesn't have a webserver or buy hosting,
what are the options? Could boxee host a scraper script + rss along side the app or would that be too much of a can of worms?

Hey l like the layout....

Glitch...
After launching your app only a few images came up the rest had the spinning circle (see below).

I waited a long time (5 mins) and no change so I clicked on the Alley Oop one an was immediately redirected to the weather settings menu. (see below)

This test was with 9.14 on a macbook pro. All with latest updates

Update:
All comics at this point do the redirect thing.
Also the Weather settings screen is unresponsive. No options to toggle (See image)

Well that's interesting to say the least. Can you duplicate this and perhaps send me a copy of your boxee.log?

Note this is off topic here but it may be related.

Your weather app is presently not displaying the radar/map feature on the main screen (see below). But if you select the area where that should be the full screen shows up fine.

Same setup and machine as above post.

Can you try uninstalling TWC and Comics.com, then restart boxee, and reinstall them both for me? I'm curious to see what's going on as I just can't seem to duplicate this.

I'm almost dumbfounded as the two (in theory) are completely separate apps.

K, so new version 0.1.1 available. Remove 0.1 and make sure that the com.unboxeed.comicscom directory in your ~/boxee/userdata/apps is gone completely to make sure that nothing will conflict. For whatever reason boxee likes to let stuff hang around when you uninstall an app.

Should solve the surprise weather settings display problem at the least. I accidentally packaged the settings.xml file from the weather app with the comics app. The comic app references the id# of 14001 as view.xml, but because the weather app references 14001 as settings.xml there appears to be a conflict of interest. I removed settings.xml entirely from the 0.1.1 package as there really aren't any settings currently for this app. I plan to add settings stuff in the next release along with the share/simillar options for each comic.

Your boxee.log helped to clear this up. Thanks again and let me know if this fixes it. :)

OK no more redirect to weather settings.... Yet the screenshot still holds for main screen only 24 out of 155 showing artwork, the rest have the spinning wheel

Is the Settings for comics.com app supposed to be greyed out?

Also when first getting into comics.com app the remote or keyboard arrow keys have no effect. Only mouse click... I will try on Atv tonight but me got no mouse on it.

Yep, supposed to be grayed out. No settings for this right now. It's just there as a placeholder for a coming release.

I'll take a look. I might have overlooked directionality (onright/onleft/etc) for something and it's tweaking out.

So even if you exit/re-enter the comics main screen you only see roughly 25 images? There's a ton of them so boxee just might be struggling to load them all. Anyone else seeing this?

In any case I'll probably have a new version out today before you get home to test with.

OK navigation (remote and arrow keys) working in so far as moving around the comics, but not able to go up to the menu bar (All,Comics,Editorials,Faves) with them. Still the only way is the mouse click.

In reference to the initial loading of the app.... how long should it take? And more importantly once the initial load is done is there a local folder where these images are saved? or does it have to reload them each time?

I have let boxee do its thing loading images.... and still only 24 of the 155.

The 24 are; (Location in grid)

1-Adam Zyglis (R1-I2)
2-Alley Oop (R1-I4)
3-Bob Englehart (R2-I7)
4-Beattie (R3-I3)
5-Chip Bok (R3-I7)
6-Britt (R4-I1)
7-Daddy's Home (R4-I6)
8-David Fitzsimmons (R5-I1)
9-Gary Markstein (R7-I4)
10-Heathcliff (R8-I5)
11-Sheritius (R10-I4)
12-Kit 'n' Carlyle (R10-I6)
13-Marshall Gamsey (R12-I1)
14-Ramirez (R12-I4)
15-Mike Keefe (R12 -I5)
16-Mike Thropson (R13-I2)
17-Nest Heads (R14-I6)
18-Nick Anderson (R14-I7)
19-Scary Gary (R18-I2)
20-Stantis (R18-I3)
21-Signe Wilkinson (R18-I6)
22-Breen (R19-I5)
23-The Barn (R20-I5)
24-Entering UNstrange Phenomena (R22-I2)

I have checked again and no new images have come up.... (20min+)

The images should be saved once the are initially loaded. Unlike the weather app, I never force any images to reload themselves in the comics app. Have you tried exiting out of the app and going back in? (Silly question I know, but sometimes failed images load for me when I restart boxee.)

Where is your location (country/state/city) currently?

Can you attach me a new copy of your boxee.log? I should be able to tell what it's doing to the images in terms of loading then.

Thanks again!

You have a ton of those where the artwork basically fails to load from your local folder. Maybe the originals corrupted themselves the first time you tried to load them when the weather settings problem occurred and now boxee is attempting to pull from your archives. That one specifically should be for the "Bill Day" strip's artwork:

http://assets.comics.com/dyn/str_comic/00000/0000/100/108/108.scroller.jpg

...which when clicked on in boxee will pull this feed:
http://dir.unboxeed.com/apps/comicscom/feeds/listing.php?ce=bill_day

What you could try is purging your picture library by going to:
~/BOXEE/userdata/profiles/tallowby/Thumbnails/Pictures

...and deleting the entire contents (eveerrrything) of that directory. That will force boxee to attempt to redownload all thumbnails for Picture applications. I just tried this on my machine, restarted boxee, and the media reloaded itself.

What do you think? This also can't be related to your location because we're both in NC, lol.

Hey you have a error in the file/image location. The image files are located outside of the pictures folder. Just loose in the thumbnails folder.

The purge and subsequent reload did not fix.... still the same

Note on second look images were added to both the thumbnails and pictures folders?

Ok I just watched the whole process...

When the app is added to my apps the following folders are created in the pictures folder (0-9 & a-f) all filled with cryptic .tbn files.

When the app is run for the first time there are 155 files created in the root of the thumbnails folder referencing links to the (0-9 & a-f) folders (ie Pictures\1\10118c6a_image.tbn).

This is an observation sorry no help on the root corruption issue

On an alternate machine (iMac) the app works fine. Will try Atv later tonight.

One thing that needs to be tweaked is the following.

Some of the cells are getting clipped so your scaling is not right. When you zoom and the little full image comes up you can see the whole cell but I have not been able to see all in an un-zoomed full screen.

Just added the app to the Apple TV and am experiencing the same problem as the macbook pro down to the same few images appear.

So far logging into boxee under the same account on 3 machines

Apple TV & Macbook Pro = problems
iMac = no problems

It appears comics.com changed paths and the server they store media on around. They no longer use assets.comics.com right now and they've "simplified" their directory structure.

I've got things mostly working again but I have to run. The only thing left to fix is the date that is displayed under each comic (right now everything is in 1969) to bring this app back to where it was.

Hopefully all will be resolved later tonight. Note there is no need to reinstall the app as all changes are on my server end with the feed generation. At the worst you merely have to restart boxee to make sure you're pulling fresh feeds.

I'll work on adding Dilbert. It's a special case however being that it is a portal site of comics.com. I'll have to add some special exception code for it since everything gets pulled from dilbert.com (which I'm pretty sure is just an alias of comics.com's domain). Dilbert does have content on comics.com, it's just tucked away:

This app won't support User Friendly however since that's not a product of comics.com. Sorry. :(

Awesome, thanks for doing that. :)

As soon as it gets added to their site, it should automatically get pulled into this app, give/take a day. I have a script that indexes their site at midnight EST every day.

Fixed some issues this app was having with the feeds I was generating that have been on my mind. Some of them affect you if you're a beta user.

An extremely bad bug with the nightly cron script that was scraping comic data has been fixed. Some broken comics should load now. They were being skipped over.

Bug with the gui tag "[/UPPERCASE]" being displayed in the comic display popup box is gone now.

Comic dates are now back instead of everything defaulting to an obscure date.

Changed the media tag I was using for the comic itself to "<enclosure>" which should bring up a nicer interface for pictures in the beta. This might break something for alpha users. Let me know if anyone notices anything out of the ordinary.

There is an issue with the beta and picture apps I'm encountering. For some reason some images won't load in boxee even though they'll pull up in any other browser. Just some images. I need to file a report on it, hopefully it'll get resolved soon.
