View Full Version : 4oD - Flash Player 10

Hi,

For a while now I've been working on a Channel4 onDemand application for Boxee. (For example:http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart/4od)

I originally intended to release it as part of the Boxee developer competition, I had to put it on hold and then when 4oD changed to the new service I had to practically start again.

Anyway...I've got the boxee 4od application to run fine on OSX but when I try to run it from my AppleTV, I just get an Install Flash Player 10 message box on my screen...boxee assumes its a video and it just sits there.

As I am unable to grab an FLV feed from 4oD, I'm having to use the popup address URL for the video which features one flash file. Boxee detects the flash and displays it full screen.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get Boxee on AppleTV to either pretend it is running Flash Player 10 or to actually install Flash Player 10.
I've looked at the javascript 4oD runs to see if it does any javascript flash detection and if it does I can't find it, as all their javascript files have been minified. (or something similar...they make little sense).

Any advice?

Cheers
-Matt

I hope some one is able to help you out here, would love a 4OD app on boxee. I've not learn much python but maybe it would be possible to write code that can check if flash is installed? Sorry if i'm way off in how i think things work lol.

If the apple TV can play my app BBC Live for example then flash definitely works.

According to the boxee script for the appletv (http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/svn/tags/boxee-info/scripts/alpha-0.9.14.6992_update.sh), flash is installed to:
/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/system/players/flashplayer/xulrunner/bin/plugins

so it should be just a matter of downloading the latest flash, and taking the flashplayer.plugin directory and placing it there.

If you get the latest flash DMG, you can extract that like so:

sudo hdiutil mount Install\ Flash\ Player\ 10\ UB.dmg
pax -r -z -f /Volumes/Install\ Flash\ Player\ 10\ UB/Adobe\ Flash\ Player.pkg/Contents/Archive.pax.gz
sudo hdiutil unmount /Volumes/Install\ Flash\ Player\ 10\ UB/

I stole that above bit from this thread:

Have you posted the app anywhere yet? Would love to try and make this work...

Thanks for the replies guys.

Liquid64: I used the method you suggested and it's working fine now. Cheers. :)

Sniperking, Shoesy: I'm hoping to release the app soon. It's working, but I need to make some changes; things like the child protection filter, I've hacked around it at the moment but I'd like to add better support for it. Also, the controls for play, pause, stop, rewind, fast-forward...etc, I'm having trouble integrating them with the 4od player, hope to have it sorted soon.

I'm spending a lot of free time on this at the moment, so should have it online soon. :)

Thanks again.

I have been searching and investigating this for months, but with no success.

I am thrilled that you are working on this, it would turn my Apple TV into the ultimate set top box and have all my friends crying in their Cornflakes.

Please let me know when its ready, I cant wait.

Hey guys,
I thought I would just give a quick update on where I am at with development of the 4oD app.

The following things still need to be done:
- Fast forward and rewind (basically any form of scrubbing the timeline).
- Bring the interface together; at the moment it all works as separate panels displaying content, I need to link them together...simple enough.
- Fix a bug that stops the first video from playing (for some reason, when you first load the application, the first video you choose doesn't play, any after that work fine - strange).
- Get the video to close at the end of playback.
- Test test test.

So, not much more to do. Hopefully, if all goes well and I don't hit too many snags, I should release the app sometime at the beginning of next week.

P.s: Thanks for the offer on help with the interface guys, I'd probably have taken you up on the offer, but it's nearly done now. :)

Soon...

I'm spending today on it, I got sidetracked over the weekend (got new computer) ... I'm struggling with one thing, but then it's done. :)

Quick question, when I release it, should I set up a depository on my own website and then share that link around? Or should I submit it to Boxee to host? I don't mind doing it on my own website, but surely it would be easier for people to find as part of the Boxee depository...my only issue is; if I submit it to Boxee and then want to release a bug fix/update sometime down the line, how easy is it to update the file on the depository? Do I have to submit it all over again?

the best way for you to maintain it is to set up repository (host on your website)..

looks like 4od may have given up on running this on their own and are moving over to YouTube.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/news/a182193/youtube-channel-4-agree-on-demand-deal.html

Would still like to see a 4od application rather than having to navigate through youtube, especially on an ATV.

Surely if they move over to youtube then making a boxee application to support it would be a lot easier then making one for the 4OD website. Hopefully anyway.

//first forum post :D

“However, the deal is non-exclusive, meaning that the catch-up service will remain available on Channel's 4's own website and third-party platforms.”

no problem there then. looking forward to this matt!

This will add again to the Boxee brilliance. Hope Cjhannel 4 are getting settled with the service design.

Hi, I know this is a pain... and I know you prob get these all the time... I have an apple tv which i have installed the ATV Flash (Firecore) which has installed boxee etc. I'd love to install some other apps you guys have worked on like the 4OD one. Trouble is i need intructions in simple terms what and how to do these things.. can anyone point me in the right direction or give a quick overview of the steps? Would be much appreciated.
