My friend, You are not alone. I am with you as I'm sure there are others. Since there is no real "user-guide" to this miracle software you may have to do a little more then scratch your n00bie noggin. That's what I did when I was asked to send one of the tech's a log from the AppleTV. I still haven't figured it out (marcel??) but let me tell you, it's been fun getting there.

All I can say is make sure that you've done the following (For Mac OS only. I'm running 10.4.11 OS):

-Upgrade your Apple TV to version 2.2
(That is part of the GUI (Graphical User Interface) so it should be simple)

-Download: atvusb-creator-1.0b7.zip (39.5MB)
from: http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/downloads/list

-Attach some sort of thumbdrive (1 GB preferable) to a USB port on your Mac computer. Use Disk Utility to format/erase it. You don't need to worry about naming it a certain way. It will get renamed "PATCHSTICK".

-Unzip and launch the atvusb-creator-1.0b7.zip

-Open the atvusb-creator-1.0.b7 folder and double click on "atvusb-creator"

-Make sure the "Choose and Installation" pop-up has "ATV-Patchstick" selected (upper left of ATV USB Creator window)

-Make sure that there are green check marks for the pop-up under the AppleTV version 2.1 pop-up. (ssh tools, bin utils, XBMC for Mac, Boxee for Mac)

-I let the ATV USB Creator download the latest Boxee application. (as of 10.24.08 version boxee-0.9.3964.dmg)

-Click on the "Create Using->" button and let this utility run it's course. I haven't put a clock to this process but please feel free to get up off your behind and do those dirty dishes you left in the sink last night.

-When you see the verbiage "Complete! (0:01:54)" you should have a newly titled USB "PATCHSTICK".

-Quit atvusb-creator and walk your freshly minted stick over to your AppleTV.

-Unplug the Apple TV and insert the "PATCHSTICK" into your Apple TV. One thing you have to remember. If for some reason you screw the pooch on installing this PATCHSTICK onto your Apple TV, you're going to have to do a "Factory Reset". You cannot install the atvusb-creator more than once on the Apple TV.

-Plug the power cord back into the Apple TV. You will see the Apple TV booting from the PATCHSTICK and installing the necessary files onto your Apple TV.

-If you're so inclined you can log into the Apple TV using the Terminal application but if you are indeed a n00bie like myself you won't know WTF they programmer is talking about so skip that and unplug the Apple TV remove the USB PATCHSTICK and plug the power cable back into the Apple TV.

-Once the Apple TV powers up you're going to see exactly what you normally would with the addition of the words XBMC and Boxee. Select XBMC and run the installers for that. There will probably be two updates so run everything that appears as a list starting at the top (you might want to write these titles down so you don't get confused about what you've already installed). Run them only once.

-Now go to Boxee and run that installer. Again, write down the titles so you don't install things twice. As I mentioned earlier, the current version of Boxee is: boxee-0.9.3964

This may be the reason you're not getting Hulu or CBS. As I understand it those were added with this upgrade.

I've been using my Apple TV without issue so far. I taking it through its paces and making sure I can ease in and out of video, pictures, music and back to the original Apple TV interface. So far so good.

Take a breath Brother. It's a pain in the ass but then again, so are those dirty dishes,...you choose.

nice post keegan3d...regarding the Hulu issue you are correct that upgrade users were experiencing the problem not new users from scratch..

thanks guys..enjoy:)

When I installed Boxee from the stick, I only installed Boxee, not XBMC. I take it I need both to upgrade Boxee? Can I re-run the patchstick for xbmc only?

I was wondering the same thing. Put Boxee on but not XBMC because I didn't know what it was at the time.

Guys - only power up the Apple TV with a Patchstick ONCE. You then go to the XBMC or Boxee menu item WITHIN AppleTV, then select update. You then can add XBMC, update the Launcher, boxee, etc.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm all up and running now.
