Will the latest ver. of Boxee run on Snow Leopard, which is shipping as of this Friday (8/28/09)?

Will Boxee take advantage of the new tech in Snow Leopard to improve video playback?

Okay, I’ve just done some testing in Snow Leopard.

The Apple Remote is no longer any use in Boxee—as reported above, it still controls Boxee, but it also controls OS X at the same time … so when you try to scroll down through a menu you also turn the system volume down, when you press play you also play the current song in iTunes, and so on.

I no longer seem to be able to view any images from my iPhoto library in Boxee. Local media > Pictures > iPhoto Library just gives me ‘Loading Error: Failed to retrieve data’.

So far, those are the only new bugs I’ve found. I still can’t play physical DVDs in Boxee and Boxee is still automatically adding the wrong files from within Video_TS folders (eg. adding VTS_01_5.VOB instead of VIDEO_TS.IFO) and not letting me delete them from the library afterwards. I’ve had those bugs for months, so they’re not Snow Leopard issues.

Will there be a remote fix in short order?

Also, will Boxee take advantage of Grand Central and the other Video improvements in Snow Leopard to improve playback?

After upgrading yesterday, I only had two problems:

1) The remote issue. I just used my iPhone remote instead, not a huge deal for me.

2) Boxee seems to have lost my display settings for overscan compensation. I was able to reset them though.

I also had a few little hiccups playing back Hulu content. The video would freeze and the audio would continue. Stopping the playback with the remote, going back to the main menu, reselecting Hulu, and starting playback again solved the problem. Hulu did remember how far into my program I was and played the program correctly from that point. I don't think this is a problem due to Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure. I've always had a few issues with Hulu playback.

If you look at the screenshots you can see that the Boxee GUI is not displaying correctly, kind of like if you run an app on windows with very poor colour/graphic settings. I guess the first screenshot I provided shows that the best.

If you look at the second screenshot too, take a look at the logos. I think it shows pretty clearly what I mean by things are looking wrong for me.

It's weird because all of my media is fine, it's just Boxee's GUI that looks wrong.

All my media is playing absolutely fine in Boxee. In windowed mode I am getting the exact same issues. My screen res is 1280 x 800.

In addition to the remote being completely bound to frontrow, itunes, etc. My display settings are messed up.

I've set several different resolutions with System Preferences (and I swear they're different options than before) but no matter what NTSC setting I choose, Boxee seems to think I'm in PAL 4:3 mode. I have a MacBook Pro (older non-uni-body model) and a DVI->Composite adapter.

So I did the Snow Leopard upgrade (from Tiger, actually - I never got around to installing the Leopard that I bought several months ago).

My main motivation was to cure the Mac of the bluetooth keyboard/mouse problems I was having. Whenever heavy disk I/O was taking place (several large torrents coming down at once or copying a single big file to a network share), the mouse and keyboard would drop.

So far it would appear that Snow Leopard fixed that problem. However, video playback is now SUCKING in Quicktime (Perian and Xvid components installed).

Looking around, video is a big issue across the board on Snow Leopard right now - skips and herky-jerky stuff.

People are even reporting problems in VLC, which, like boxee, does not use the built-in Mac codecs:

http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=64491

Boxee Team - look out for this, apparently the OS is jacking with the process space regardless of codecs or app used.

Holy crap.

Just popped a DVD into the Mac and fire up Front Row:

Every 1-2 seconds, the film jerks - like its skipping a few frames. Totally consistent pulsing for the entire movie.

Snow Leopards has completely screwed up video playback - even from DVD source!

Note that I'm on a Gen 1 Intel Mac mini - Core Duo - not Core 2 Duo. Upgraded a while back to 2GB RAM.

I'm also experiencing all of the beforementioned problems. I also found the following problem:
- Video calibration seems broken in 9.14 on Snow Leopard. When I select my external display (1280x720) and choose Video Calibration I can only select a small portion of the screen. It also says it's displaying PAL 4:3.
- Indexing doesn't seem to work
- No MKV playback. Boxee will just show an endless loading screen.

These 3 problems seem to have disappeared when I reverted back to 9.11.

marcel
September 7th, 2009, 03:16 AM
@E-Vix video calibration issue is not related to snow leopard it is a bug that will be fixed in the beta version in the meantime you can calibrate the screen by playing a movie and from the OSD select Settings>Video>Video Calibration..

Can you elaborate on the indexing issue ?Where is your content found ?locally or over a network?

Can you play the MKV via the Browse option?

Upgraded to Snow Leopard on a March 2009 Mini. No problems with playback or remote (no inadvertent activation of iTunes and/or Front Row).

NOTE: I use Remote Buddy in conjunction with an IR Remote. In Remote Buddy's preferences, I had disabled its ability to control all software - including iTunes and Front Row - except Boxee and Safari (this is because this Mac mini is used only as a set top box). I believe that Remote Buddy in this configuration eliminates Front Row/iTunes activation.

I upgraded to snow leopard from a perfectly running 10.5.7...upon upgrade Boxee won't even launch..So to give it the benefit of the doubt I completely wiped out 10.5.7 and did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. I think I have traced the problem down to this.
I, like most users, prefer to auto login to OSX as root so it stops asking me for my password every ten seconds. When I login as root boxee crashes, but when I login as an admin user, thus still getting prompted for my password, boxee works and launches like a champ.
is there any way to fix boxee that it will launch in the root user as it did with the standard leopard??

They all come out of the woodwork when something doesn't work, don't they!

I'm using 10.6.1 with Boxee 0.9.14.6992 (Latest Alpha Release)
I've got a generic intel MacMini, 1 gig of RAM and running Boxee full screen.

All my videos are ffmpeg encoded and work great. I have a harmony remote that replaced the little MacMini remote that came with the system. Everything seems to work okay. I did notice that when i select "up" or "down", the volume of the mini is changed, but after the video's playing I just hit "up" a few times and the volume's back to what it should be.

I did notice that after closing Boxee, sometimes Front Page opens up (or has been open) and i just hit Back on the remote to close it.

I don't usually watch DVDs before ripping them, so I can't speak for the playback of that. I do know that Handbrake is still ripping DVDs just fine. I'm streaming them wirelessly over my network (G) and there is no skipping or pausing even over the wireless.

The biggest issue I'm having is what the Mini controls with the IR. I was looking for a free app that would let me configure how it handles the IR, but I gave up after a little while.

Great work on Boxee. I love it.

(I also have been using the iPhone app as a remote and that works perfectly)

Apple had said that it warned developers about using a "deprecated API" which works fine in Leopard but would not be supported in Snow Leopard. Hence why Photoshop users are having problems in Snow Leopard. Do you think Boxee has a similar issue?

I'm having a few issues as well.

1. I can no longer use the video calibration option to correctly set the size. This is what is looks like (http://focalpoint.no/boxee.png) when I use it.

2. Some .avi files gets out of sync with video/sound after a while. If I rewind it, it goes back to normal, but after a while the sound is really off again.

I use a boxee on a mac, on a secondary screen. This all happened after I upgraded to snow leopard.

Hi! Since loading Snow Leopard on to my Imac Dual Core, I have not been able to wirelessly play my video files which are on a hard drive attached to my computer, using the apple TV and Boxee. I use an airport extreme. Here is what happens: just so you know, I launch Boxee, I click on my name to login, then it shows me the main menu with all of the things I, and friends, and Avner have watched recently, I left click on the Apple remote and the left side menu comes up, then I go down to Browse and click on it. I get a list of things which I can get media from, so I go to my Imac warehouse, (the drive I use to store the movies), it displays all of my movies choices on that drive, and I click on one to play it. It searches and then I get a "Failure to Connect" message. This is the exact procedure I used with the Leopard OS on the Mac which worked perfectly, and now I cannot access the movies on that drive since loading Snow Leopard. Any Ideas?
PS I think you guys are doing an amazing job. We all appreciate.

I fixed the problem where boxee will not recognize files on the outboard drive on my remorely connected Imac. I had to go into setup and reconnect each of the drives that I need the ATV to recognize. Apparently the Snow Leopard must have changed the ID on the IMac and didn't tell boxee. Upon reconnecting, everything works even better tan before. Maybe it's just me but the pictures seen sharper and communication speed is fasted. No pixelization or lapses during playback.

This thread explains the whole problem (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=11355) with HULU you are having with stalled video.

It is not a Snow Leopard problem, it is Hulu sending some script error alert that you can not see on Macs. I know that Linux users see the script error and can hit cancel to resume video. I wonder what is happening to the Windows users?

FOR ALL WHO ARE EXPERIENCING REMOTE ISSUES
http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php?/topic/8658-apple-remote-issues-under-10-6/

On page 4 of the thread, member Ben R. details his workaround. He has found the daemon that sends the IR commands to the system, killed it in activity monitor and removed it from core services. Side effect of this fix is that you can no longer control itunes, frontrow, quicktime etc from the remote, but the "bezel controls" (F-key functionality) still remains intact.

He mentions creation of an applescript to add this when necessary, but to my knowledge has not completed anything. If this works for you and you are good with applescripts, consider lending him a hand.

This is by far the BEST workaround I have seen after many days of frustration and scouring the web for answers, please see his original post for the details as I'd like to give credit where it is due.

I've been asked to repost this bug inside this thread.

OS 10.6.1

Problem: Within seconds of playing a DVD (or Video_TS folder), or any .mkv file, Boxee causes the computer to either kernel panic or actually reboot itself. Playback actually begins, then the KP/reboot happens.

Troubleshooting steps taken: Deleted entire boxee userdata folder, deleted boxee application, emptied trash and rebooted. Upgraded Perian and VLC to newest SL-compliant versions (not sure if Boxee uses either), re-downloaded and installed boxee. Problem persists. All Quicktime and AVI files play fine with no problems.

guys did you try this Since the release of Snow Leopard, Apples latest and greatest OS, Boxee users who upgraded have found themselves with a remote thats possessed or at least seems to be since it controls multiple programs at the same time. The wizzes over at IOSPIRIT have come to the rescue with new software called Candelair to let people use their IR remote (Apple, Logitech Harmony, etc.) to control Boxee as they did prior to upgrading.

It is an independent install that can be downloaded from http://www.candelair.com/download

Kudos to Felix and the IOSPIRIT team for coming up with this elegant solution.

IOSPIRIT's IR remote tool fixed my remote issues on Snow Leopard.. but I am also experiencing a loss of all sound as well.. Is anyone else getting this? I'm using a MacMini w/ Snow Leopard, using the standard analog audio output.

When first starting Boxee it produces the menu clicking sounds.. When I first try and play anything (video, audio, it's doesn't seem to matter) the media plays, but with no sound - and from then on the menu clicking sounds are also gone.

I've tried the 2 different audio options in the settings, to no avail. The OS continues to produce sound (eg. VLC, iTunes).. So it's only Boxee.. Is this a known issue with Snow Leopard?

No.. it was before that.. I had tried to watch a few torrents prior and Boxee played them with no sound - I figured it was a codec thing.. But once I fixed the remote issue, I went back to try and use Boxee more and discovered the audio issue.

Just to clarify, you say the the menu sounds stop working once you've played media... is this even once you have STOPPED the media from playing? It is possible you have the option for menu sounds to be disabled while media is playing and you've left the video running in the background.

I know this doesn't resolve your issue but I suppose it would help the boxee folks to know.

No.. The option for menu sounds is on. I tried turning it off as others on other platforms have said it solved a similar issue. Whether they are on or off, I get no sound from any media (seemingly any types, video or audio, even basic mp3s).

I only use the MacMini as a media centre... so it doesn't have a lot else installed. Shall I try rolling back to a previous Boxee?

djdrey: Has the 10.6.2 update made any difference to your problem?

i know that remote buddy works to get the remote working again....

but has anyone tried out sofa control? i've been using this on 10.5 religulously, and i've been holding off updating to SL because of the remote issues.
if you can also confirm that hulu desktop & dvd player are working, that would be appreciated too. ( yes, i'm aware that boxee *can* do those operations, but it never works 100% of the time for me so i need to drop back to those apps when boxee fails )

i do like the speed improvements on my macbook tho, and i'd like to upgrade the mini to the same.....but not if the remote is failing.

Has anyone else updated their macs to 10.6.2?? I did the other day, and it broke the apple remote functionality for Boxee. I have not changed any settings in Boxee itself; the remote worked perfectly fine before the update, and now it doesnt. I noticed that Candelair released an update (1.7.2) for their IR driver, so I downloaded and installed it, re-paired my remote, and it still will not control Boxee.

It seems like the remote driver has reverted to its original Snow Leopard status, and continues to control Front Row while ignoring Boxee completely.

Anybody else having similar issues?

My MacBook Pro has been updated to 10.6.2, and I'm having the same symptoms as mrmustard. The remote works to control front row still, but is not working against boxee now. I have noticed that Hulu released an update to their desktop software post 10.6.2 and since that installed, Hulu desktop is responding correctly to remote control again.

Hey guys, new to boxee. I've had access for a while, but I was waiting on the new iMacs before I upgraded to an Intel Mac.

I got boxee up and running on my 27" iMac running 10.6.2 SL and it works fine up until I try to exit. When i attempt to close boxee, it hangs and I have to reboot my machine to use it again. Has anyone else had this problem?

Being that I'm a newbie, is there a way to exit "full screen" mode so I can at least use Boxee bc I can't continue to use it if I have to power down my machine every time it hangs on me.

Just updated to 10.6.2 and my Harmony Remote 720 is not working with Boxee. Works with Hulu Desktop without any issues has this been fixed in the Boxee Beta release?

I have a Mac Mini with OSX 10.6.2. I just installed Boxee and it looks great, but Apple Remote doesn't work at all, but it can control Front Row and XBMC no problem. Any ideas?

I just tried installing plex and it had me install candelair first. plex now works with the Apple Remote, but still boxee doesn't respond at all.

Can you send me a screen shot of the candelair settings page?
