View Full Version : New App: ITV Player

I have created an app for ITV Player, the online catch up service for the ITV channels in the UK.

As with my Demand Five app, pause is working, but it is not possible to change volume or to skip and you will also need to press Stop when it has finished playing.

If you want to watch shows with mature content, you will need to follow these steps:
1) Go to http://www.itv.com/itvplayer
2) Find, and attempt to play a show with mature content
3) In the "Instant Access" section, select the checkbox next to "I am over 18 years of age and I have read and understood the Terms & Conditions"
4) Click on the "Allow restricted content" button
Note: this will not work if you use the PIN protected access option.

When you follow those steps, a "flash cookie" is created as part of your Flash settings (which the Flash plugin in Boxee also uses).

As with the Demand Five app, it will probably only work in the UK.

You can install this from the App Box if you add my repository at http://dir.gadget-channel.co.uk to Boxee.

Note: You may find, as I have, that sometimes the message "sorry, the video could not be found" is displayed instead of the correct video. This appears to be an issue on the ITV site and not with the app, as this also happens playing in a web browser. Pressing Stop and then playing the same show again will usually work.

Thanks, been looking forward to this, now just need the 4OD app!

How would you go about viewing the mature content on an Apple TV? are you able to add something into the application to allow this?

Cheers

Excellent, but away on business right now so not going to be able to see this till Friday night. :(

I am an AppleTV user too, so hope you can sort of the cookie behaviour.

I have made some changes which mean that it should no longer be necessary to use a web browser to select the mature content option. This is a server-side change and so you will not need to do anything. However, if anybody tries this on Apple TV can they let me know if it works properly?

What should happen is that the first time you view "mature content" (I believe ITV classified this as anything originally broadcast after the 9 PM watershed) a couple of screens will pop up for a few seconds. The relevant options will automatically be selected, and the video will then start shortly after.
This should be a one time process, other mature content should play immediately although sometimes it may display the screens a second time if you play another video immediately afterwards as there seems to be some degree of caching in the "Flash cookies" (I don't know if this is due to Flash or Boxee).

It's possible that it requires a newer version of Flash than is on the Apple TV. There is a discussion about a similar thing with 4OD (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=10967), which also includes some information about installing a newer version of Flash on the Apple TV.

So if I read that thread correctly, does it mean a new .dmg for the AppleTV could be made with a newer version of Flash included as a solution?

I've installed Flash player 10 using the method that was suggested from the link above but still no joy on my Apple TV?

Actually I think it uses Silverlight hence the problem, does anyone know how to install Silverlight on an Apple TV?

You cant, the atv is like those Guarrity Flashlights, you get rid of them when youre done.

I've installed Silverlight using a method described on AwkwardTV but it still doesn't work :(

Hi Steven,

Have tried with the AppleTV, but as per other users, it's not working. Select any program, and after a brief spin of the buffering icon, then a black screen. The counter is moving along second by second as if it is playing, but no dice.

Have also tried using the latest flash plugin as described in the other thread, but it does nothing to alleviate the fault with this App, plus it kills off the iPlayer as well. Copying back the old flash plugin restores all to normal. Perhaps we will have to wait for a new Boxee release for it to be able to work with the latest version of flash? (I also verified ownership and permissions were correct on the executable after I copied it over - just to eliminate the obvious)

Anyway, thought I'd let you know,

Jim.

Hi Jules,

No reply from dev, so maybe it isn't possible/has been abandoned?

So +1 from me on some info!

Jim.

this is a third party application ..built by StevenR( who has built other great apps http://dir.gadget-channel.co.uk ) and i believe this does not work on ATV

I don't think there is anything I can do in the app itself to allow it to working on the Apple TV. I'm sure the problem is related to Flash on the ATV. It could be due to the version, or to do with the "flash cookies" (Local Shared Objects) used by the ITV Player site - does anybody know if Flash on the ATV supports these?

the itv player is now flash. Silverlight was dropped

None of the above are working on the ATV.

BBCiPlayer works just fine - perfect.

Has anyone had any success. I've tried everything.

BOXEE?

You may have noticed a problem recently with there being sound but no video. This was due to layout changes on the ITV Player site, specifically a change in the id of the Flash player. I've just applied a fix to the server side Javascript, which should fix this. I've tested it in the Windows and Mac versions and it appears to be working.

I can confirm that this App works on ATV 3.0.1 - using the most Up-to-date version of Boxee, as of the present date.

Your ITV Player and Five Demand apps are BRILLIANT.

The only problems i have seen so far:

Just ITV Player

Pause does work, but resume does not work (this is the most critical issue overall- pleasepleaseplease fix this one :))

Both applications:

A-Z buttons do nothing
Ordering of programs goes from left to right, instead of top to bottom (The first thing family members did was get confused over the ordering of the programs)

Thanks for your efforts, you have made Boxee a requirement in my house :)

Confirmed it works on our ATV with 3.0.1 and latest Boxee also.

Is there a way to make it play in a Higher Quality though?

Using the Beta build from 5th January, but The Gadget Channel repository at http://dir.gadget-channel.co.uk is not loading any Apps.

Either get an indefinite pulsing of the Boxee loading animation, or a message about content not being available and geo-blocked. I'm connecting in UK and have the geo-block hiding feature in Boxee turned off anyway.

All other repositories display channels as expected.

The GUI is functional, but I like the list view. Means I can quickly scroll right to the show I want to watch. Thumbs up StevenR. :D

Shame about my crappy BT internet, though. No streaming at the weekend for us. :( Let's see if it's any better when we switch ISP in the next month or two.

I was hoping that the "AdBlock Plus" Firefox add on would skip these ITV ads like it does on some other video sites... maybe there's another list I can subscribe to? Any tips?

cheers

Ive just downloaded this app, I can watch videos using Google Chrome however when I try and play any videos from ITV I just get a black screen and nothing happens.

Im using the latest Boxee and running Ubuntu 10.04.

Is this application working for anyone else?

This app does not appear to be working currently. It's likely that ITV has made changes to their website and the app hasn't been updated to take them in to account...

Thanks for the swift response, hopefully it will be updated soon as its the final application that stands between me and my Boxee having all the terrestrial channels content. :p

It should be working again now. ITV had changed to using relative URLs (such as /itvplayer/Video/?Filter=...) instead of absolute URLs (such as http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/Video/?Filter=...) which had broken my feeds.
Fortunately, these were done via Yahoo Pipes and so could be corrected without requiring any changes in the app itself.
If you still cannot see anything this may be due to due to server-side caching on Yahoo Pipes, so give it a few hours and try again.
