View Full Version : [FAQ] So how do i get boxee on atv?

first, a short disclaimer - we, boxee, have not devised the method of loading applications onto the apple tv. you have the great guys at atvusb-creator (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/) to thank for that, and for making it relatively simple. and of course, those preceding them at finding the methods of doing it in the first place.

so one resource on how to really do it is of course heading to atvusb-creator (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/) and following instructions.

a possibly easier to follow guide is available at Wired.com (http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/10/set-your-apple.html), with a more in-depth version at their howto wiki (http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Hack_Your_Apple_TV_With_Boxee).

two things to always keep in mind:

the atvusb-creator will treat your external usb harddrive as a thumb drive, at least until the next version. make sure you are formatting the correct device.
you can always go back, power-off and on while pressing menu+minus, select language, factory restore, and update your atv to latest version.

I'll add that using the simple instructions you point to, it could not be simpler to get boxee onto your Apple TV!

It was so simple, in fact, that I thought I had done something wrong.

Question 1

I have just created Patchstick using ATV USb Creator (1.0.b10). In this I selected from the third drop-down menu on the RH side "XBMC/Boxee for Mac" option (somewhat confusing as all 4 options automatically have green ticks against them) .. i just ticked the last ...

When I look at the contents of the Patchstick it shows two plugins .. one under the folder "SoftwareMenu", and the other "XMBCLauncher" .. but no mention of Boxee.

Looking at the step-by-step guide at http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/ the screenshots, presumably from an earlier version of the creator, show separate plugins BoxeeLauncher and XMBCLauncher. Conversely there is no mention of SoftwareMenu.

Have I done something wrong in creating Patchstick .. or have plugins changes with latest version ?

Question 2

I (mis-?)understand that I need to load the ssh (modifier ? plugin ? whatever ..) to allow me to terminal in to the ATV ? I do not see that on my Patchstick, though it is the first option in the dropdown menu mentioned above. Do I need to create a new/separate patchstick for that and run it ?

Sorry if these are very basic questions, but when new to all this it is comforting to have all the small details clear; for those people who have done this many times it may seem trivial .. but it ain;t !!

XMBCLauncher handles both boxee and xbmc

I suggest, enabling ssh and bintuils.

OK ... but I can only get a check mark against one of the items in the drop down box

Also, with just selecting the xbmc/boxee for match option it has put on the stick two Packages .. binutils and dropbear.

So it appears binutils is "automatically" there .. but i do not see ssh.

.. do i need to run patchstick 2 or 3 times to get these different bits on ?

I have no clue what is going on.

run atvusb-creator, all items will be checked by default. Uncheck SoftwareMenu. Select the USB flash drive and go.

I think you can do a factory restore on the atv to get back to the original setup. You'll want to update to the latest atv software.

Press the MENU button and the down (-) option on the other button on the atv remote control for about 6 or 8 seconds. atv will flash an amber light and you'll be taken to a screen with several options. Choose factory restore.

New to the whole thing as of tonight. I created the patchstick, install it on ATV. When I downloaded the software on ATV, I only downloaded Boxee alpha, no launcher, no XBMC only boxee. Was that wrong?

The install of Boxee seem to go well. Anyway, when I try and go to boxee all I get is a black screen. Any help would be nice

Will boxee get erased if I update my ATV software?

Who is Avner Ronen? He is my "friend", no idea who he is and how he got to be my "friend".

What is XBMC in the Launcher? Does it work on ATV?

Can I run my music through Boxee that is on my ATV already? My music won't show up.

Hulu is all jittery, is there anything I can do about it?

Do I always have to launch Boxee? Can it just show up in the menu on the left in ATV?

I assume I am a Alpha User Tester, what can I do to help?

What Exactly is Boxee? Sorry for the Stupid Question

Postby jreffner@fuse.net » Wed Dec 03, 2008 9:38 am
I got my Boxee invitation and now I'm confused as to exactly what it is.

I apologize for this idiotic question, but what is Boxee?

Is it a replacement interface for my flashed AppleTV, or if I add Boxee to the latest installation of my flashed AppleTV, then will I just get more features in the same flashed AppleTV interface that I'm used to?

Going to the Boxee site makes it look like a community place where I say, "Hey I watched movie X, and Joe over there watched movie Y. The fack that Boxee appears to be an "Advanced" plug-in in the latest aTV flash update makes me think it simply adds functionality to the same AppleTV flashed interface. Having read other info on this forum makes me think it will completely change the interface of my AppleTV.

I'm so confused and would really appreciate clear information explaining EXACTLY what Boxee is. Please assume I'm a total moron.

Many thanks,

Sorry for coming in late in the discussion, but I'm trying to search the forum for the answer to this question, but there is so much info I can't find the simple answer.

I recieved a new ATV for fathers day.

I have found the patchstick creation video here
http://boxee.blip.tv/#1418648

I have found the patchstick google code here
http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

I have found the patchstick installation video here (Fourth video down on the right side)
http://boxee.blip.tv/#1418648

My question is, will all of this work on a New ATV? Most of the posts were from the 4th quarter of 2008, I just want to know if I'm OK to proceed, or are there problems with the newer ATV software 2.2 vs 2.3 and this hack?

Thanks

Your links and patchstick links are the ones I used just yesterday on my brand new ATV. Worked fine.

My new ATV came with 2.3. You will need ATV 2.3 and Launcher 3.0 & 3.1, which you need for Hulu and some other things to work correctly. I did not want mine to install 2.4 for now.

Have your patchstick ready first!

Once I started my ATV the first time and got it connected to the network, I quickly went into the ATV General settings and stopped the ATV Firmware update. As it had already downloaded 2.4 and started to install. I then quickly unplugged it, put in the patchstick and powered back on to install the hack. Powered back off, pulled out the USB and powered up. Then quickly went into the Launcher settings (not the Apple settings) and Disabled the ATV Autoupdate there to keep it from installing the 2.4 update.

After that I installed the 3.0 Launcher, then the 3.1...both are on the menus. Then Boxee and XBMC. Worked like a charm. Took 10 minutes.

There are some issues with the latest Boxee build with Hulu and sometimes SMB shares. Read the ATV area for more details. Overall, mine works fine with only some minor issues I had to work through. But Hulu is dead with this build along with only a few others. Team Boxee is aware of it....

OK, thanks. I'm a bit more hopeful for trying this now. You mentioned disabling the auto update. Can you explain that process a little more for me? I'm currently at 2.3.1.

Will

Ok, ATV has it's own auto update feature that downloads any new firmware when it comes available. The ATV I bought Saturday came with 2.3.1.

I personally did not want it to update to 2.4. So, when you plug in a NEW ATV for the first time, it forces you to set up your network. Then ATV starts up.

Before you install boxee, and after the ATV boots for the first time... if you go into Settings> General, you will see "update" in the right column. Mine was already downloading 2.4 and getting ready to install it. So, you gotta be quick! I clicked Stop Update. But that is not permanent....it will start again shortly!!

Then powered it down...put in the patchstick....and powered ATV back up again. The patchstick installed and I powered down again and restarted.

Again, I checked the ATV General settings...sure enough ATV was updating itself again. I stopped it again.

Now that the mod is installed, you have a new item in the left menu called Launcher. I clicked it and then clicked on Settings on the right column. There is now an ATV Auto Update -On or Off. I selected - Off. This setting overrides the ATV's own setting to update automatically. Now 2.4 will not be installed.

Now I went ahead and downloaded Launcher updates 3.0 then 3.1. Then downloaded Boxee and XBMC from the download menu.

Hope that helps.

So, this is a new problem - so far Mobipocket files both DRM and not-DRM on my iLiad have been working just fine. But, today I opened a Mobipocket file Ive been reading, and it opened on the first page, and not on the last page read. Ive tried it a few more times, and this happened everytime.
I was wondering if anybody had the same problem, and if so, how it was solved?

p.s. This mobipocket file was created from pdf file in Mobipocket Desktop Reader.

Goto the software menu of the hacked appletv.
First click on check for updates and let it do its thing.
then you should see that the launcher needs to be updated.
update that.
Unplug and replug the ATV once its finished, then goto the launcher and download the latest version of boxee from the downloads section of the launcher.

Hope that helps

I had to factory reset my ATV. Proceeded to use the USB patchstick with softwarelauncher .741 for the boxee install. It showed that it loaded without errors. So after removing the patchstick from the ATV i rebooted. I do not get the launcher menu item on the ATV main screen.

Do i need to upgrade the ATV software version to get this to work? Its been long time since having to install boxee...am i forgetting something?

Problem is that after downloading the dmg and then running the ATVUSB creator it asks me to "save file". I've tried a few diff names like ATV patchstick" and saving it to the USB drive. There are no plans to get Netflix working on the AppleTV. The AppleTV's hardware is limited through Boxee to run Netflix. Apple could release an update to the AppleTV to support Netflix but I highly doubt they will do it when they have their own movie rental service.

Cheers,

Hi Fancois,

Yes, it is confusing and I'll probably just make it worse...but I'll try....

The patchstick installs linux binaries to allow you to ssh into the ATV and also a program called the boxee/xbmc launcher which allows you to download and install xbmc and boxee from the atv menu using the remote after you've run the patchstick.

The 3.0 and 3.0.1 firmware updates that Apple pushed out basically broke this boxee/xbmc launcher program.

You should be able to create the patchstick as described in the old instructions (for instance I used my old firmware 2.2 patchstick). Once this process is done and you've used the "old" patchstick the broken launch program will be installed and you'll find that it still won't show up in the ATV menu. You then have to use the process in

http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=68150&postcount=28

or the more brief version

http://boxee.zendesk.com/forums/4959...3#posts-162800

to manually install launcher-3.2beta3 which will replace the older broken boxee/xbmc launcher on the ATV and allow things to work again. Once you've done this latter fix, you'll see the LAUNCHER item in the ATV menu bar and the submenus will finally allow you to really install boxee and/or xbmc.

I don't believe this has been all fixed up in one clean happy package yet since the boxee folks are distracted by the long awaited beta version of the software.

I hope this makes some sort of sense. Feel free to ask again if you're still confused. I've been there...... but its been a long time since I've built a patchstick. The old one just keeps working :) if you do the additional patches to the ATV as described in the above links after you've used the old one.

Wait, what? Didn't it used to work on ATV? I just bought an ATV so I could watch Netflix on my TV, in addition to all of the other things ATV does. Are there any plans to get Netflix working for ATV, especially before Christmas?
Netflix uses Silverlight. The Boxee folks have indicated getting Silverlight to work on Boxee is very difficult, as it requires more powerful hardware. However, I have been encouraged by the recent news that MS is working with Apple on Silverlight for the iPhone. If this is indeed true, it seems that Silverlight on the AppleTV is more likely.

Nonetheless, we're talking about several steps between here and there. I haven't heard about any plans in the near future.

first, a short disclaimer - we, boxee, have not devised the method of loading applications onto the apple tv. you have the great guys at atvusb-creator (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/) to thank for that, and for making it relatively simple. and of course, those preceding them at finding the methods of doing it in the first place.

so one resource on how to really do it is of course heading to atvusb-creator (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/) and following instructions.

a possibly easier to follow guide is available at Wired.com (http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/10/set-your-apple.html), with a more in-depth version at their howto wiki (http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Hack_Your_Apple_TV_With_Boxee).

two things to always keep in mind:

the atvusb-creator will treat your external usb harddrive as a thumb drive, at least until the next version. make sure you are formatting the correct device.
you can always go back, power-off and on while pressing menu+minus, select language, factory restore, and update your atv to latest version.

Hello,

I too, am having some troubles getting my patchstick created. I followed the step by step process (on a Windows 7 PC), the USB creator tool says it worked, there is an ISO file on the flash drive but it doesn't boot into boxee when it is plugged into the ATV. I had troubles creating a "bootable" USB drive, if it isn't "bootable" will the USB creator tool still say it was successful? If so, can someone give me better direction on creating a USB drive so that it can be used as a bootable drive for my ATV?

Thanks!

evizzle: Have you gone through the steps listed here:

atvWinPatchstickGuide (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/wiki/atvWinPatchstickGuide)

There is a TroubleShooting Guide (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/wiki/atvwinTroubleshooting) too.

I had trouble with creating a patchstick on a brand new install of Windows7, and attributed it to the OS not being able to handle my very old 512MB stick... The USB Image Tool would fail to recognize the stick during the restore process. I switched to XP and it worked fine.

as I know, first you have to format your flash drive in Mac format. then create patch stick.

Ok, I have a macbook running snow leopard. I have Apply TV 3.01. I have followed the Apple TV installation information and followed it.

I have formatted my usb thumb drive to Mac OS Extended (journaled). I have also tried formatting to FAT.

However, I can't get the ATV USB to recognize the the thumb drive so I can start the ATV USB / patchstick transfer.

I am also unsure of what a bootable drive is. Do I need to put snow leopard on the drive? As you can probably tell, I am very computer illiterate, so any assistance would be great.

Thank you.

The easy first step I would try is to try a different USB Drive - for some reason, some don't work.

I can't be much help here, but a "bootable drive" is one that has one sector (an area on the hard drive platter) dedicated to information for starting the computer. It's referred to as "the boot sector." Without it, a computer can't find the OS on the drive, nor know how to load it.

Memory sticks, without the divided concentric sections of a hard drive platter, sort of "virtualize" the sector information to be compatible with well established file systems such as FAT (which, by the way, stands for "file allocation table," a bit of trivia that will likely do you no good). So, you can create a boot sector on a memory stick, even if there's no sector to do it on.

The advice about trying another memory stick is a good one. I fought for two hours doing "everything right." Finally I tried another stick (twin of the first one) and it worked fine on the first shot.

Good luck.

I succeeded in making my patchstick after a entire day of trying (I think I did anyway) downloaded to my atv (version 3.0) never got msg that it was completed and when I go to menu boxee isn't there. The fixes for this appear to be for mac and I'm running Windows xp any suggestions?

Hey Swett,

Did you check out the links in my post above? If you follow those directions exactly, you shouldn't have a problem. If ATV is still not detecting the patchstick, you'll have to try another USB stick - not all work.

Dude,

as of 3.0+, patchstick no longer creates Launcher menu entry. You need to SSH into your ATV and issue the following commands one at a time:

wget http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/files/Launcher-3.2.2-debug.run

chmod +x Launcher-3.2.2-debug.run

./Launcher-3.2.2-debug.run

When it asks you to restart Finder, answer yes. When Finder restarts, you will then have the launcher menu entry. If you wish to install the Boxee Alpha or XBMC, you can do this from the downloads submenu. If you want the Beta, then go to the Sticky in the AppleTV subforum (link is in my Sig.) on these boards...

Hope this helps,

Jim

It is really helpful. Thank you so much for this post! I have found a direct Rip Blu-ray dvd software.

The biggest advantage of this Blu-ray converter is his powerful fuctions. It gathers almost all common video and audio format and you can convert Blu-ray and common DVD format to another popular video and audio files with it, for example, AVI, MPEG, MP3, MP4, ACC etc. Of course, it's price is higher relative. Blu ray Ripper (http://www.besthdsoft.com/best-hd-blu-ray-ripper.html) is a real BIG MAC.

I've been trying to create a patchstick from the ATV Creator but it hangs.
all versions are for ATV 2.X but I'm using 3.0 The Wired "Gadget Lab" version also shows for Apple TV 2.1. Any newer version for Creator?
Ahah! I see in further posts that you can't launch from a patchstick in 3.0... so do I hack into Apple TV and code my way through? Boxee looks great on my iMac. It sure would be nice to stream it downstairs to my HDTV.

You need to patchstick your atv to enable SSH and bintools. Then follow my post above to get the launcher menu to work by SSHing in and running the commands. Then you can use the downloads submenu to install Boxee Alpha or follow the Boxee Beta on ATV sticky thread in this subforum to get the Beta. Hope this clears things up!

I did the following processs

1. Download the ATVUSB-Creator from http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/
2. Download the disk image of AppleTV 2.4 from http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-62...4-5660-029.dmg
3. Insert a "bootable" USB drive into your Pc/Mac
4. Run the ATVUSB-Creator
5. Click on Choose a DMG and point it to the downloaded disk image(point number 2 http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-62...4-5660-029.dmg)
6. Click on Create Using
7. Remove the USB drive and plug it into your Apple TV
8. Power on your Apple TV and the patchstick will run the ATV bootloader
9. After the bootloader finishes, remove it and restart your Apple TV

(when i got to this point i restarted apple tv but did not find the boxee on the menu)

i read the last lines on the bootloader and it said "
*If you received no errors above, then you can plug in your Apple TV, wait 3 minutes, then open terminal and type : ssh frontrow@appletv.local

*when prompted for a password, enter: frontrow

i followed the instructions on mac terminal but i did not accept my password........ now im not saying that this is why boxee wont appear but it was worth a try

-=---------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. It now has options for Boxee / XBMC on the main menu
11. Click on Boxee, then select update launcher and then update Boxee alpha
12. Once boxee is done installing, restart your Apple TV
13. Click "Boxee"

1) Open up terminal on your mac or Linux install (or Putty on Windows)
2) type:
ssh frontrow@appletv.local
3) enter frontrow when asked for password
4) enter the commands to install launcher from

http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=84734&postcount=71

Best to copy-and-paste them directly and execute them one line at a time. When you've finished answer yes to restart Finder and the Launcher menu entry will appear. Simple!

Hi,
I have successfully installed Boxee Beta on a 2.4 patched firmware but I didn't reach to update to 3.01 firmware.

I have tried both "Patchstick Builder" (http://patchstick.wikispaces.com/PatchStickBuilder) and ATV USB Creator 1.0.b10 (http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/) without success.

I have tried to use the same USB Key I used (with success) in the past for patching 2.4 firmware ...

I am thinking to use ATV Win that seems to be more updated also if does no sense to use a Windows PC (or to emulate a Windows PC) for updating an Apple device !

Thanks for help !

Please see:

http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=85668&postcount=78

for how to get launcher working. You can do it fine with a 2.4 ptachstick, it doesn't matter. Just follow the instructions in the above post and it will create a Launcher menu entry. As long as you have correctly created your patchstick (ie you enabled SSH-tools and Bintools - don't worry about Software menu or XBMC/Boxee. Software menu doesn't work and the manual method referenced above gets you XBMC/Boxee anyway) you will not have a problem, I promise! Once you have the Launcher menu entry show up, go to the Downloads sub-menu and Download XBMC 9.11 and Boxee Alpha.

If you want Boxee Beta, then you'll have to do a bit of hacking around (see my sticky thread in this sub-forum for details...)

If you do have a problem, post back here and I'll help you unpick it...

Just for clarity the problem I had was preparing a patchstick for firmware 3.01. At the end I had to use ATV Win in an emulated Windows session ... software for Mac did work correctly for 2.x firmware but not for 3.x ones ...

Hi All!

Just to let you know that a new version of atvusb_creator for mac has been released that is now fully ATV OS 3.x compatible. It installs the latest Launcher, has a fixed download list for dmg's, includes the latest version of Software Menu and now installs OpenSSH instead of dropbear.

you can get it from the follow place:

http://atvusb-creator.googlecode.com/files/atvusb-creator-1.0.b12.zip

Now you can create a patchstick from you Mac or Win box that will work as advertised and you can install the Boxee Beta from the Launcher Menu. All this goodness in 24 hours is more than anyone deserves!

Jim

PS I haven't tested it yet - so don't shoot me if it doesn't work!

I apologize for the question because I have looked throughout the forum and have not found a resolution but I am having some difficulty installing Boxee on my ATV 3.0.2. My ATV's hard drive has been upgraded to a 120GB about 1.5 years ago and I have never installed any other applications, systems, etc... on it.

I really want to install Boxee and have the option to use an external hard drive but first I need to install Boxee.

Every time I use my Kingston 1 GB flash drive to create a patchstick with ATV USB Creator version 1.0.b13 and try to install on ATV I get a Restart, Restore or Run Diagnostics on the ATV. I have the following options selected:
ATV-Patchstick
AppleTV version 3.x
Check box next to ssh tools
All other options have green check
Downloads dmg
Select Create Using ->
Completes Successfully

I am not sure what I am doing wrong but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,

Mike, the most likely culprit is the flash drive itself. Please re-read the instructions. I use a 2GB flash drive from Verbatim, which I have had no issue with. If you search the forums, or google, you will see that success can be a function of the flash drive.

Try another Flash drive, make sure you follow the instructions to a T and then get back if it fails.

A new flash drive fixed the problem. I thought since I was using a kingston drive that would have not been the problem.

It is working but the hulu videos are really choppy. Also is there a way to watch "HD" hulu and streaming videos by default?

Thank you for your help!!!:)

Note that Boxee Beta incorporates Hulu shows within the Boxee search function, so if you click on TV SHOWS, search for a show (eg: House Md), it will show the results (including anything hosted on Hulu).

In terms of setting content to HD, Im not aware of how you can do that within the Boxee Framework, however if you follow the directions to sign into Hulu Mature content (which is basically just a way of having Boxee reference your username and password for Hulu) you could setup your Hulu account with the appropriate setting in Firefox, copy the cookies.squlite file as directed, and see what happens.

http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=14860

You will probably need to use cyberduck or a similar program (unless your an SSH God)

Please post your results. Im not sure even if it works, you will like what you see, but go for it.....

have just created Patchstick using ATV USb Creator (1.0.b10).

Step 1
Download the atvusb-creator software from code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator

Step 2
Insert a “bootable” USB drive into your Mac. If you’re not sure how to make a USB drive bootable, go to step 3. If you think your USB drive is bootable, skip step 3. There’s no harm in making it bootable, even if you think it already is, though.

Step 3
a. Plug the USB drive that you want to make bootable into your Mac. Run the ATVUSB-Creator program you downloaded in Step 1. Pay special attention to the USB Target Device. The USB Target Device is what you will make bootable and eventually install the software on. In my case I had to select the drop down, make note of which drives showed up, then eject the USB drive and refresh the drive list and see which drive was no longer there.

b. Choose ATV-Bootloader and click the Create Using button. Once it says complete go to Step 4.

Step 4
Choose ATV-Patchstick and click the Create Using button again. By default it will show AppleTV version 2.1 and select the appropriate tools for you. Once it says complete

Step 5
Remove the USB drive from your Mac.

Step 6
Power down your Apple TV. In my test I unplugged it completely.

Step 7
a. Plug in the USB drive into your Apple TV.
b. Power on your Apple TV and wait until the patching is complete. You will see an icon with the ATVUSB-Creator logo on it on your screen and then a series of commands roll by. When it’s complete the text on your TV will instruct you to power down your Apple TV, remove the USB drive, then restart your Apple TV.

Step 8
Once your Apple TV has restarted you will see Boxee as an option. Click on the Boxee menu and select Update. Then download the latest update for Boxee.

That’s it! Now you have Boxee on your Apple TV.

Thanks a lot for the quick, easy breakdown.
Easy to setup the patchstick, thanks.

Quick question. I had Boxee on my Apple TV quite some time ago but when the ATV software was upgraded to 3.whatever it is, I lost Boxee.

At the time I think it was necessary to SSH into the ATV from your Mac and play around with code. I wasn't too confident with messing around with code so I didn't bother doing this and have been without Boxee ever since.

If I know want to reload Boxee onto my ATV, do I just do the Patchstick thing (which i can cope with) or do i still need to play around with code from Terminal to get Boxee to work?

Please advise.

Marcel - one for you I think

Thanks

Dean

Create a flash drive using the latest atvusb-creator, and just re-run it. You shouldnt have to ssh anything.

http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

Note:

1. Once installed, from Launcher Download Boxee
2. You will see Software Menu on LHS. I would update NitoTV. Then from the Nito menu run Smart Installer.

so, I have installed boxee before on my ATV` and it destroyed my usb drive that I used saying that it had no bytes on the drive as storage space, not 0 available, that was the capacity. tried to restore it with the usb creator tool with the back up image i had made, but it was dead. 14 months later after foolishly upgrading firmware on ATV, i had to make another patchstick and install it again. Boxee is installed but now, my damned usb drive says there is 0 bytes capacity and when i try to restore it, the program says "code 3" cannot access the device...help.

I think your SOL. You might try using disk utility to mount and recover it or repair it. Otherwise I think your making a trip to best buy.

I have done the Patchstick routine and Boxee is installed on my Apple TV. My problem is on opening Boxee it brings up the login screen and asks for my User ID and password, but how can I enter this without a keyboard? Is there some way to access the on-screen apple tv keyboard (if so, it's not obvious to me) or to use terminal to input the data? I feel like a twit since the answer is probably obvious but I can't see my way forward. Thanks.

If you navigate to the username field and password field, and click on the field, a virtual boxee keyboard will appear and you simply enter the characters and select DONE.

Thanks Nuggyblake, that did the trick. I thought I had pressed everything on the remote that could be pressed but perhaps not at the right spot, or the remote was not lined-up with the IR receptor. Much appreciated.
