Anyone else experiencing "stuttering" while playing Hulu videos on your Apple TV?

Mine does, and no other "networks" content stutters; only Hulu's.

Is this a known issue?

Same here. I think I reported it but I don't remember.

I had hoped the rev from the other day with Hulu fixes would stop the stuttering but no dice. But, I am very confident they will work out the issues soon. :)

could you post which shows you were watching. I havent had any stutter issues with hulu since the last boxee update.

My other question is..
Had boxee stopped indexing you apple tvs content?

For me it was anything on I watched. I was using Angel episode "The Ring" as a test to make sure it was the Apple TV running boxee that was the problem and not the Mac running boxee. (I know the content runs perfectly from my Mac via Safari, but my PS3 also stutters)

I played with it tonight for a bit to see how it was.

It was not nearly as bad as it had been the last time I tried it. It was quite watchable all things considered. But there was still some stuttering at times. But, as long as I didn't try to use the menus, it ran well.

Angel, "The Ring", same test video as before.

the first time i ran hulu it stuttered pretty bad, but I believe this was due to boxee indexing my atv content while i was watching hulu. I have had good luck since. The only problem I have is an occasional artifact when the camera has lots of fast movement. I will try angel, "the ring" and see if it stutters for me as well

I was streaming Arrested Development from Hulu on my AppleTV. It stuttered pretty bad.

I didn't find stuttering playing Dave Chappelle vids from Comedy Central.

I'm getting the same thing here while watching Chuck, just video but audio is fine. Which is fine because I mostly listen in the background.

'Chuck' on Hulu has two issues for me in general: the framerate is low (~15fps), and periodically it stutters in fast-moving scenes. However, this also happens on the PowerBook G4 sitting next to the TV (streaming Hulu direct from the website, not through Boxee). The low framerate can also be seen at work or home on a fast Intel Mac (with a 30Mbps connection speed), so I think that's just endemic to Hulu+Chuck. The stuttering seems to be related to processor speed, not connection speed (as the MacBook Pro does not stutter when streaming over the same home connection as the AppleTV or PowerBook).

I think the core problem here is that the Apple TV has a rather slow processor, and Hulu's Chuck stream, for whatever reason, takes a hefty CPU to decode. It's funny because other shows have higher framerates and go through action sequences stutter-free on the Apple TV. Not sure what NBC is doing "wrong" with Chuck.

This is strange, I get the same thing with The Office. I wonder if I`m on the latest version and if it has been fixed.

All experiencing sever Hulu stuttering: are you downloading torrents in the background? I noticed that if a torrent is downloading in the background, Hulu gets really jittery. I'm looking into automatically throttling back rtorrent during the hours we watch shows (I don't download torrents very often, but the old movies are fun to have around to watch when we have extra time).

It'd be GREAT if Boxee was able to automatically tell rtorrent to throttle down when Hulu is playing, but I haven't gotten any responses to that suggestion in the feature suggestion area.

I'm seeing very reproducible stuttering on my AppleTV when rtorrent is downloading more than about 10kbps in the background. The only time we had similar trouble without rtorrent going was on election night when our broadband connection went into the crapper (latency through the roof and bandwidth down to about 2Mbps).

It doesn't seem to be strictly bandwidth related, as we have tried downloading files at ~300kbps sustained on another computer while watching Hulu, with no detrimental effects.

I think it's just rtorrent's CPU usage, which goes from 3-6% when idle up to 11-20% at 10kbps, and which causes Boxee.app itself to fluctuate between 20 and 30% (it sits at around 15-16% when rtorrent is idle). "./bxflplayer-osx" is the Hulu flash player, and that stays around 45-60% CPU usage consistently. Honestly, once rtorrent starts chugging along, the CPU usage figures start gyrating all over the place, but they seem to stay in the above ranges.

The numbers below were grabbed from repeated polling of 'ps aux' via ssh to the AppleTV ('sudo top' shows the same stats, but it's easier to look back with the ps aux snapshots).

Without rtorrent Active (nothing in Torrents folder):

/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/MacOS/Boxee -fs: 15-16%

/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/bin/boxee-rtorrent: 1-6%

./bxflplayer-osx: 45-60%

With rtorrent Active (downloading torrents at ~10kbps):

/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/MacOS/Boxee -fs: 20-30%

/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/bin/boxee-rtorrent: 11-20%

./bxflplayer-osx: 45-60%

As you can imagine, with Boxee.app taking ~30% and rtorrent taking ~20% that won't allow Flash to take 60% (and there are still other normal OS processes running taking up CPU). The gyrations seem to be fairly random, and I haven't seen both rtorrent and Boxee.app peak at the same time, but even without them peaking they add up to about 40% of the CPU consistently, which is bound to cause issues with Flash which wants better than half the CPU's cycles itself.

yeah, I was having a Hulu stuttering problem and I just made sure I had other apps closed down before running Boxee. This is on Linux and it made a world of difference. Esp. if you have lots of other apps running and they are using swap space, things can slow down sporadically.

That's interesting. Are you able to watch Apple TV content on Boxee? I had not thought to do that.

I will revive this thread because I am encountering the same issues. Now my boxee box is not the most advanced of machines so it is likely the limitations of my hardware.
However, when running hulu in firefox I am able to avoid stutter by running the videos at 360p as opposed to the 480p. My question is two parts: first is boxee running the 480p setting and secondly if so can I switch to 360p?

Well, the new version (released today for ATV & Mac) purports to have better Hulu playback. So try updating.

I had the same issues today. I finally received my invite and logged on this afternoon with the latest version (updated today). I was watching an episode of 30 Rock and the video lagged tremendously. It was still watchable, but the latency was annoying. I'm running Boxee on my ATV 2.2.

Has there been any resolution to this? I'm running Apple TV 2.2 as well and hulu content has the video stutter still with the latest updates running.

I'm not downloading any torrents or indexing any content, it's a consistent stutter across all shows at all times.

Using newest alpha version of boxee on my atv and am finding stuttering on all hulu content. Makes me motion sick :(

So, I guess there hasn't been a resolution. Nothing in the background taking much cpu cycles.

I'm running the latest alpha for both my ATV and my Windows box and hulu stutters on both. Before the whole incident where boxee was forced to pull the direct hulu stream, it played 360p content just fine (420 had always stuttered on my ATV, but I knew that was because of the intense graphics processing being done directly on the puny ATV cpu).

Now it won't even play that. It's almost fine, but every couple of seconds it skips a frame or two making it unwatchable. I thought it was because of the ATV hardware, but like I said, it's also doing it on my Windows box (which should have enough heft).
