View Full Version : weird apple remote behavior with ATV 2.1

I have been experiencing some weird behavior with the apple remote with the 2.1 software. I have the latest boxee 3964 with the XBMClauncher 0.4.

What happens is that some of the buttons are jumbled around. Pressing up on the remote moves the selection down, menu is mapped to 'play', pressing right goes 'left', and down, left, and play don't seem to do anything.

I'd appreciate any leads or hints anyone may have. Thanks!

this is very strange ..does this happen just on boxee on all ATV applications, have you tried rebooting ATV or try to unpair/pair the remote again..

hi guys

are you both using ATV 2.1 or ATV 2.2 ?

Can you upgrade to 2.2 or is this a problem?

I have tried with both 2.1 and 2.2. No change!

The remote weirdness is only in boxee. I haven't tried XBMC in a while but the buttons worked fine when I did. Rebooting, messing with Keymap.xml files, pairing/unpairing doesn't have an effect.

I'm hesitant to switch to 2.2 just yet simply because Sapphire handles all my TV/Movie organization. Boxee has the potential to take that over but I want to give it a full trial before I make a decision.

Out of curiosity, for the people with this issue, how did you hack your ATV? Did you use the ATV USB creator program or something similar or do it manually with a 10.4 install? I have a HD lying around with 10.4 on it and just hook that up to the ATV when I need to swap some files or install some libraries. Perhaps something I've added in changed the ID of the buttons for the apple remote?

I also have a original ATV that came with 1.0 installed (trying to find some correlation between those affected).

Thanks for the replies. At least I'm not alone.

there was a change in remote mapping between different versions of atv.

sounds to me like the remote control application does not properly recognise your atv version

please ssh into the atv, and do

less /Library/Logs/Console/501/console.log

press > (shift + .) to get to end of file, and look for something like this

Running Boxee test...
And the log goes to... /Users/frontrow/Library/Logs/
The XBMC_HOME environment variable is not set.
The XBMC_HOME environment variable is not set.
nothing found to unload
sh: line 1: /usr/bin/killall: No such file or directory
QZ_SetVideoWindowed(1280, 720)
Using display 411058496
AppletTV software version could not be determined.
Defaulting to using key code for AppleTV r2.1
is rtorrent running: 0

So it seems that Boxee thinks I have ATV 2.0 rather than 2.1:
Running Boxee test...
And the log goes to... /Users/frontrow/Library/Logs/
The XBMC_HOME environment variable is not set.
The XBMC_HOME environment variable is not set.
nothing found to unload
No matching processes belonging to you were found
QZ_SetVideoWindowed(1280, 720)
Using key code for AppleTV r2.0x
Using display 1925322944
is rtorrent running: 0

Is there an easy way to fake this value? Thank so much for helping work this out.

I am having the same issue. Just bought a second hand aTV (v1.0), upgraded to 2.2, ran the atv-patchstick and booted up Boxee. Up/down definitely work, because i can move between Exit and Add User, but pressing play does not let me actually select either item. I grepped the logs, and have the same output. It thinks I am running 2.1, even though I am on 2.2

Any ideas?

Sort of lame solution but I needed to clean my install out so I restored to 1.0, upgraded to 2.2 and patchsticked it using atv-usbcreator. Everything works great now. At least personally, I most likely had a mixture of different ATV software versions due to performing safe upgrades rather than full hacks for each new software version.

Sounds like you did the same thing but didn't work out quite as well. I've read that disabling the ATV screen saver (set to 'never') and rebooting causes the remote to come around in Boxee and that was the case with me as well.
