I am proud to announce the beta release of my very first Boxee app: GameTrailers.com RSS, now available in HD (when available).

GameTrailers.com RSS brings you the latest gaming news, previews, and reviews from popular gaming web site GameTrailers.com.

The reason this is called GameTrailers.com RSS is that it is a very simple application with no skinning. It relies on RSS Feeds from GameTrailers.com's web site, either from Podcasts or using the Feed Creation form on GameTrailers.com's site, as well as Boxee's built-in support for GameTrailers.com videos.

As this is a beta release, expect the application to be buggy. I highly encourage everyone who uses the app to please report any issues. If there are any Boxee developers out there willing to lend some advice, please let me know, because I have no idea how on earth I got this far to being with. :)

To access this app, add the following repository to Boxee:
dir.internalserver.net

My web host currently charges by how much bandwidth I use. I have no idea how much bandwidth this will use. I'm unemployed and don't really have any money to spend on anything, but I feel really confident about this app and will risk having to spend a little money to get this out to the public.

Once again, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or helpful insight for this app, please let me know right here in this thread. And, by the way, I already have ideas for the next version of this app. :D

(And yes... this is almost word-for-word the same message I used for the release of my ABC News Local (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=15595) app. Just saving myself some time.) :)

Oh, I've been wanting somebody to come back to that project for months now. I'm looking forward to trying this out again.

Problem is, I can't seem to add it to my apps or use the app at all. I added the ABC News app with no problem...

Seriously, I hate being the first poster of an issue. :D Especially when you are truly giving yourself to this project. For what it's worth, good luck and keep up the good work.

Don't feel so bad. I too hate being the first guy to give bad news. Unfortunately, I usually notice issues on other people's projects within seconds of seeing it. Curse my perfectionism!!!

This is my very first Boxee app I've ever written, so I kind of anticipated bugs to happen. That's one reason I released it to the public. Hoping people will see things that I can't.

This also being my first app, I'm still trying to get a hang of how a Boxee app is created. I'll check out the debugger and see what's going on exactly. (Which is SO much easier on the Mac than I ever realized. Yay for Console!)

For those that were unable to add GameTrailers.com RSS to the My Apps section, this bug has been fixed. There was a version mismatch issue between the one in the app's descriptor.xml and the repository's index.xml.

If you are still unable to add GameTrailers.com RSS to My Apps, you may need to delete the net.internalserver.dir.gtrss folder from your Apps directory first. Your Apps directory can be find in...

Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/BOXEE/UserData/apps
Windows XP: c:\Documents and Settings\<windows username>\Application Data\BOXEE\userdata\apps
Windows Vista/7: c:\Users\<windows username>\AppData\Roaming\BOXEE\userdata\apps
Linux: ~/.boxee/UserData/apps

If you run into any other issues, please let me know!

Hmm, I'm getting a "No results found. Some content is geo-blocked. Configuration can be changed" error after adding your repository.

Any clues on fixing that ?

I just checked out the app (1:00 am Central Time) and everything is working fine right now. The application doesn't have a geographic lock on it, so that's not the issue.

I know I've run into this issue a couple of times before in which if for some reason Boxee is having issues accessing the content on an app due to connectivity issues, it'll display this message. I've had this happen on other apps. Usually exiting Boxee and reopening it will resolve the problem.

Update:
I should follow up on that. As I have mentioned, I'm on a web host that changes based on bandwidth usage. I did double-check that and I'm in good standing with them right now, but I do wonder if they have connectivity issues every once and a while. It's too early for me to tell.

Has anyone else had this issue with this or other Boxee apps before? I just want to make sure I'm not going crazy here.

Just relaunched Boxee and this time both of your apps were available. I guess I'll have to load new apps later in the evening when Internet use drops a bit here in Silicon Valley! :)

The GameTrailers.com Feed received a small update. I keep scouring GameTrailer's web site for anything new that pops up. If you see anything that I don't already have listed, let me know!

What's New
Features (previously labeled as Specials)
Pach-Attach Filled with the golden nuggets of wisdom, the Pach-Attack brings the smarmy seer's insight straight to GameTrailers.com.
Penny Arcade: The Series A reality show based on the exploits of the Penny Arcade company and its founders, Gabe (Mike Krahulik) and Tycho (Jerry Holkins).

GTTV*
GTTV with Geoff Keighley Updated with proper feed address

Originals
HourONE The first hour of gameplay from newly released games uncut.

*As of now, promos for HourONE and Episodes of GTTV are only available in the feeds.

To be able watch these would require creating a true Boxee app (as compared to this RSS app) to enable opening the appropriate web page to full screen the Flash video (similar to how Hulu is done on Boxee). I might get around to doing that, but not right now. I'll have to read up on how to do that first.

Great job on the app!

Is there a way to view the reviews, features, previews, and other content in HD?

I'm definitely looking into HD. SD was the easier route to go first. Not to mention my net connection isn't the best, so HD is tough for the tubes here.

As of right now, Reviews and Previews are fed in via GameTrailer.com's Podcast feeds, which are only available in SD. The other items that come should be able to be done in HD. I'll play around with it and see what I can do (without making the navigation ugly).

After some tinkering, GameTrailers.com RSS is now available in HD (when available).

As of now, GameTrailers.com RSS will be available as two separate apps (GameTrailers.com and GameTrailers.com HD) until I can find a better means of selecting between SD and HD content easy.

Now, since my computers choke hard trying to play HD content, I will need some feedback on the functionality. Please let me know of any and all issues you run into trying to run the application (both SD and HD versions).

For information about how to access GameTrailers.com RSS, see the first post (http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=85010&postcount=1) on this thread.

You should really check here (http://fuzzthed.com/submit.php) and submit this app to his repo so you could atleast alleviate some of your bandwidth concerns... Plus most of us already have this repo added... Just trying to help...

I've been monitoring bandwidth usage on my repository and quite surprised at how little is being used. That probably just means it's not being used that much, but still rather surprising. I'll keep hosting my own stuff for the time being but will look into that above if need be. Thanks!

That's great to hear! It's a good feeling to be able to provide people with something useful. :D

any chance of getting the Retrospectives?

The GameTrailers Retrospectives series is great and I love it, to the point I tried to make an unofficial DVD out of the Final Fantasy Retrospective (with menus and all!).

Unfortunately, Retrospectives is one of the things GT doesn't provide a RSS feed for. :( If they did, that would be in the app in a heartbeat! Don't worry, though. I keep checking GT's web site in hopes of it appearing one day.

Love this app, thanks again!

Sadly I have to use the non-HD feeds on my htpc, I blame it on FLV or MOV, whatever GT gives in the RSS. Ironically, my htpc plays high bitrate h264 files just fine (software only, no hardware assistance).

Actually, if GT returns MOV files in its RSS feeds, would it be possible to rename those files/streams to MP4 or HDMOV so that Boxee can use a different splitter to play those videos? I know the QuickTime decoders (if Boxee uses them for MOV files) is pretty processor intensive when it doesn't need to be, it would definitely help my system out.

Thank you for the compliment! Trying to find time to work on the next version, which I think will rock. Mind you, I'm a little bias. :)

I've actually tried setting up to GT to use the QuickTime file in the feeds (GT gives the option between Flash, QuickTime, and Windows Media), but for some reason, it always defaults back to the Flash player. This MIGHT be because of Boxee's built-in interpreter for the GameTrailers web site. I don't have a complete technical know-how of Boxee still, so I really can't say that's the reason why.

I also decided to stick to Flash for two main reasons: 1) Flash works on everything (although performance varies) no questions asked and 2) I want to ensure the ads play. If companies are going to provide media to us for free, I want to ensure they're compensated for it.

I'll look into the alternate media options again in the future and see if there's a way to make them selectable and actually use the selected option, but as for now, Flash is the only route. Adobe needs to stop messing around and get hardware acceleration going already.
