You can grab the latest version from the Boxee repository!

Please report any issues in this topic or email support@unboxeed.com.

Hopefully have it out to y'all by the end of the weekend, barring any craziness. This version of the app is based on the much friendlier weather underground api (http://wiki.wunderground.com/index.php/API_-_XML) unlike the old app which did a lot of scraping from the weather channel site to get data. Needless to say the weather channel does not take kindly to that idea and attempting to resolve the issue went no where, so here we are today. Keep following this thread for updates.

The new app should eventually support everything the old one did and probably more since wunderground freely gives out a lot of great info w/ their api.

Planned so far are alerts, current weather, projected forecast, radar, satellite imagery, and webcam video. You'll be able to select from a wider array of imagery in terms of radar/satellite. Whatever is available here (http://www.wunderground.com/US/Region/US/Temperature.html) I'm going to try and support (us + international, temperature - air quality).

I'm still toying with the idea of being able to define a personal weather station location since you can do that on wunderground, but it will probably come in a followup build as it will need a custom settings panel so you can deviate from the internal location Boxee sets.

DPK's probably aware of this, but for those of you who arn't:

The weather underground has introduced a new site that pretty much kicks ass:

Wow, nomad, you're not kidding.
Is there a way to get that into Boxee as an app?
(I'm new to Boxee, but I'm absolutely loving the new beta (except the not-so-great music features))

Some updates! I'm sorry it's taken so long to get this thing out the door. I started working on it and decided at one point to try and shove as much as possible into it before initially releasing it. I wasn't happy with just a mediocre display of weather. The app is now going through some testing phases, so stay tuned and check out some teasers below:

Works fine for me. Sometimes you have to add the repository, go back to the Home Screen and then go back to the repository you just added and the apps will show up fine.

Here's an idea for the Weather App that no one else may have thought of...

Have the weather app launch automatically at the same time each morning (if Boxee is idle of course). This would go great with many newer TVs that have the feature to automatically turn the TV on at a certain time of day.

I'd love for Boxee to be my morning alarm clock and have the weather right there ready for me to view! How cool would that be!

Which weather radio station is it picking for you? It'd either be a Boxee problem or a problem with the local station. Go to the following page and listen to the station from your browser. If it sounds just as weird as it does in Boxee then you might want to contact the station owner and let them know their audio is screwed up:

http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/index.html

If otherwise, let me know. In a future release I hope to add the ability to manually pick the station you want to always use for consistency reasons. There's a station near me with horrible audio that I sometimes get pushed because another one will go offline every now and then, so I understand.

That is actually a pretty cool idea. I could implement something like this where you could set a "timer" or have the app launch when your local time matches your locations "sunrise" time. Bear in mind though that you would have to launch the app at least once for this to happen per Boxee session. The reason being is that Boxee does not allow for timed based or automatic launching of apps.

If you load an app at least once however, that app can run an independent thread in the background even if you exit it. So as long as you don't close Boxee (theoretically indefinitely) the timer would always run and launch the Weather app in the morning for you. :)

First, I must say this is an awesome app...definitely extends where the base weather within boxee leaves off...an initial idea I had as of first load would be the ability to load multiple locations, and then cycle between them via the hidden menu.

I often like to look ahead to the weekend to see what the weather will be like for the place I am to go camping, and this would be a great way if it's possible.

Also, I agree with the ability to manual select the weather radio station, as it is picking a place about an hour south of me, when there is a place an hour east that has more similar weather to what I see where I am at. (I am sure it doesn't help that the one it picks is in Wisconsin, and I live in Michigan)

Love the app, thanks DPK.

I would find it useful if I were able to have a list of several locations saved in the sidebar that I could easily switch between. I spend many weekends over the summer at a friend's lake house and I like to check the forecast in that area frequently.

Hello!

I am using the great Weather Channel plugin. My current city is Porto Alegre (Brazil), but for some reason the radar image shows the US map. How can I change it to show my region?

The upcoming alerts section also show only a webcam from near here and a lot of US stuff, but I guess this may be due to lack of data.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, thanks for the reponse ;)

Do you mean picking another city? I could only find this one for my city, and it's the state's capital, a 2 milliion inhabitants city..

Do you think this is a problem in weather channel's data?

My current city code is BRXX0186. I've verified the channel's site and there it looks good.

If you are using the older Weather Channel plugin I would suggest you upgrade as it is no longer supported. The older app was subject to some usage violations so I removed it from my repository and intentionally broke the scripts running the backend stuff on my server. There is a newer Wunderground Weather app that is available by clicking on the "Weather" link in my signature that runs completely client side.

The one I use looks exactly as the one in that thread, and I've downloaded it from that repository... I think it's something else. The map I see on the weather app is the same from these shots as well.

You're its author, right? Thanks for the great plugin, I use it every day! The only issue I have is regarding the map.

No idea. I do know that the error that gets displayed is a generic one I use that basically indicates that one of the feeds needed for data fails to download. I log the exact problem that occurs, but never display it. I'll try to make the specific errors more apparent. :p

Not a bug. You need to manually pick which radar images to display by going to the radar section of the app and toggling them. Merged thread from general forum with this one.

Nope, hit the left arrow in the app to get here:

Coming this week, multiple weather locations:
http://imgur.com/Qc90C.png

This app will be moving to the official Boxee repository! It has already been approved and gone through QA testing. When it appears it will be Weather v0.3.9 which I recommend everyone upgrade to. The version on my repository (v0.3.4) will be pulled as soon as I see v0.3.9 pop up.

Some exciting things are coming. I know I've said it before, but it is truly exciting (for me at least) and will affect the path this app is on in the future. :)

In the weeks ahead I hope to add the ability to customize weather radio stations in more detail. This will have the added benefit (so I have planned in my head) to decrease the load times this app experiences when retrieving weather media data.

Yup! The "change location" button interacts with whatever the active view is, so if you click on "Tokyo, Japan" and then "change location" it will update the location 3 position.

I am having a little difficulty. I had the original from the unboxeed repo and it was working fine but the icon was missing from the the shortcut menu. Any advice on how to resolve this ?

DPK
July 17th, 2010, 11:10 AM
There might be an id conflict or something else going on.

Try this:

** Make sure you are running the latest version of Boxee, if not do a complete uninstall of both Boxee and your profile data (because Boxee is still beta software now); then upgrade Boxee. **

If Boxee is running, exit to your desktop and make sure it's not running anywhere.
Go to your Boxee userdata directory and then to the app install directory:

~/BOXEE/userdata/apps

com.unboxeed.weather is the old weather version and weather is the new version. When you uninstall an app in Boxee, it's not really gone. Boxee does poor garbage collection so things get left behind. Completely remove these directories and their contents:

com.unboxeed.weather
weather

Go to your Boxee profiles directory:

~/BOXEE/userdata/profiles/<BoxeeUser>/apps

Completely remove these directories and their contents:

com.unboxeed.weather
weather

Restart Boxee and try installing the app from the Boxee repository.
If none of this works let me know and we'll dig deeper into it.

I've been having trouble getting the maps to work. Default maps like "United States : Satellite" work, but United Kingdom maps I have added (like "United Kingdom : Temperature") just show a blank image.
Also, there is a phantom map which shows as "None : None" which is also blank - this appeared after removing some of the default United States maps.
What could be the problem?

Shouldn't matter, but thanks.

Also before you launch Weather, can you also go to Settings > System > Advanced and change the Debug Level to DEBUG for me? It basically makes Boxee dump anything it does to the log file.

More information the better, right? ;)

Best case scenario I should be able to pinpoint the issue and let you know of a "quick fix" so you can patch it yourself until I can get a new version out. Worst case is we get invaded by aliens and they're messing with our weather satellites before bringing untold doom to us all.

Quick follow-up: I upgraded to the latest version of Boxee and all is now right with the world. Great app, the text seems a little small though; is there any way to adjust that?

Another thought, is there a ppa to use to keep Boxee up to date on Linux systems? That would be a lot better than having to go to the website to download the newest version every time there's a new version.

Boy do I feel like an idiot...

I'm pretty sure I figured it out. I am running my own DNS server which uses a bunch of public HOSTS files to block ads. It looks like wunderground.com was one of the sites that the HOSTS file was blocking. I am just removing it now and will do some further testing.

I hope you didn't spend too much time trying to figure this out. It looks like the MVPS hosts file blocks it.

Sorry to trouble you with this.

P.S. Your PM box is full.

Update: It was my DNS blocking it, anyone who is having issues should make sure they aren't blocking any part of wunderground.com in their HOSTS file or with a DNS tool such as ConFetch.

Currently there's no way to adjust the text size. It's limited right now to how much information I had to cram into the space to get a general weather outlook. I'll keep this in mind though for future versions as the app gets further built out. This last version saw more backend work done than anything really new done w/ the UI.

I think there's a way to do auto-updates in Linux, but it's not my field so you're better off asking in the Linux forum. I know that in the future and especially as we near release of the Boxee Box, the team is going to add auto-updating to Boxee as a core feature.

As for app auto-updating, that currently does happen to only apps in the official Boxee repo. So whenever I update this app again, your Boxee should pull it down now that this app is in the official repo and not on my third-party repo.

one thing I have noticed, is that I am unable to select any of the Temperature Radar Maps. Even the default 'All US' map, once unselected I am unable to reselect it. Seems to be the case on ALL temperature maps, and also a few humidity maps. IAnyone else experiencing similar behavior?

From my understanding this app is just pulling everything from WU? Is it possible to add your own artwork for the sun etc and possibly add some animations. I'm sure i can speak for must of the android community that HTC's active weather app is pretty cool with how it shows rain, snow, fog, etc. Or at leas to spice it up just a tad with some better pics of the sun/moon/seasonal phases/weather conditions.

The app looks really killer the way it is though btw. NEW Boxee member here BTW. Came from XBMC.

Why can I not find this application??? I really want to use it, yet I do not see it in the official repository and there has been no one else asking where it went.

Good question. I couldn't find it in the main repository either for the Boxee Box. It may not be v1.0 compatible; it's still available on the DIY/OS platforms that are running v0.9.
