Software menu doesn't work on recent ATV OS's. The guy that develops it hasn't worked on it in a long while and the patchstick guys are talking about dropping it from their software anyway. Apparently it can cause crashes on later Revs of the OS - best to avoid it totally IMHO.... You only need Launcher for XBMC/Boxee and NitoTV for other stuff.

uhm, I think this is outdated information. Thomas Cool, the guy that wrote and maintains Software Menu is active, and Software Menu is still in active development. Check the wiki a awkwardtv.org (http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/SoftwareMenu).

I think there were some discussions as it took a while for Tom to update Software Menu for ATVs >= 3.0. But, hey, he does this, like most of us, in his spare time. And as he 'delivered' in reasonable time, it's still present in currently available patchsticks and at least to my knowledge there's currently no discussion in removing it.

crashes on later Revs of the OS? You might want to create an entry on its bug-tracker (http://code.google.com/p/iscripts/issues/list)

cheers,

Sorry dude - read a post by Davilla somewhere where he said the guy was MIA and didn't think it would be updated again and hence was considering dropping it from the patchstick creator. Can't remember where I saw that now! But if it has since been updated and is now a working project - that's cool....

I wouldn't have considered putting in a bug report for abandonware, but I am considering installing it and testing it out now that something's happening with it. I think the last time I tried it was on 2.1, or something like that, but there's been a few updates to the ATV since then - who know's maybe it works out of the box on 3.0.1?

Jim

EDIT: Have tried the latest Beta and can confirm it no longer hangs the ATV (or forces a reboot). I have it running on 3.0.1 and one really cool feature is the ability to step back or forward an OS Rev without destroying your set up - worth the price of admission alone. I'm off to eat my massive serving of humble pie now!

If anyone's interested, you can SSH into your ATV and run:

wget http://iscripts.googlecode.com/files/SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run

chmod +x SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run

./SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run

Thanks for getting us this info on the new version of Software Menu.

I noticed some bugs with the Frap Mover. It was kind of frustrating but I figured out what it sometimes does. Sometimes when you select a certain Frappliance, it selects a different one than you intended. For example, I click Photos but I get Internet instead. If you hit Menu to back out, your selection has moved to a different Frap again, but if you select THAT one, you end up in the Frap you originally wanted (in this example, Photos).

Also when you choose Restart Finder, the ATV appears to freeze for awhile and then it kicks back in.

Yeah, I got the Frap thing as well, you have to faff around to get the results we want - perhaps one of us should take MaestroDD up on posting some bug reports! Totally useful feature though. I've previously had to manually edit files to change the menu order - if this worked properly it would be a totally killer feature...

Well I managed to get it to work once I noticed that when I click on a Frap, the name at the top didn't match the name of what I just clicked. Before that, I was massively confused!

I've been trying to figure out how to do this manually exactly to avoid having to muck about with Frap Mover's bugs. Where are these settings saved? I think I'd rather edit the files manually.

Also, do you know if it's possible to change the name of a frappliance? I wanted to rename Software Menu to Plugins or Maintenance like they have in ATV Flash.

I've figured out how to do this so for everyone's benefit I'll answering my own question here. You can change the name of an Apple TV app (aka frappliance) by editing the CFBundleName in the InfoPlist.strings file that resides in {app_name}.frappliance/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/.

I've been trying to figure out how to do this (re-order apps in the menu) manually exactly to avoid having to muck about with Frap Mover's bugs. Where are these settings saved? I think I'd rather edit the files manually.

Unfortunately I still have no idea how to do this manually.
