I'd love to see skins like AEON make it to Boxee :)

People have hacked-in custom skins in the past, but it is not as easy as it is with XBMC.

For instance, if the skin isn't named Boxee Skin NG--or whatever it's called--it will break ALL apps, as that path is required by them.

What this means is that Boxee can not support switching between skins.

Also, AEON would need some MAJOR changes to work with Boxee. It could almost be considered porting.

Boxee team should make this more simple to other teams like those in XBMC to make some amazing skins for Boxee, i think that this is a MUST for Boxee!!

I could see the appeal, but it rubs against the grain boxee's philosophy of simplicity-is-key approach to software design.

If someone could make a SI swimsuit edition skin..... however..... that may change developer's minds...

I agree 100%. (I just posted something quite like this.)

Here is the thing: a media center does not HAVE to be skinable, though many are. (Think: MCE and Frontrow.)

Because Boxee comes from XBMC, people assume it should just inherit that trait. It does not. Actually, it jacks-up the app API. the API is VOLUMES more important than skins.

It's not that the team is against skins... If you search the forums, Marcel has ALWAYS encouraged custom skin attempts, and even mentioned that he has used them. But, things like that are likely to stay just where they are: here in the fourms. Where the enthusiasts live, people that want to try cool new Boxee hacks. (Skinning Boxee is a hack, BTW.)

As of 'has to have'... If you ask some one that is in to the HTPC scene, they would say you're right. But, Boxee is not that application; XBMC is that application.

Think of the Boxee Box. The averaged consumer would not pass on it because you can't skin Boxee. And that is where the teams mind is: the Boxee Box. Not the product itself, but rather what is the best application for something like the Boxee Box. Think: dead simple. Think: Apple. That is what the team cares about.

I think if Boxee ever does customization it will be simpler. Things like Fuzz's Background changing app:
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=17026

I see the team offering something like changing Boxee's color scheme. Like the difference between a Firefox theme and a Chrome theme.

I'm sorry to say it, but Skins are just not a 'must have'.

...However, you could always post it on GS... if it gets enough votes... (I am require to say this, so as not to dash peoples hopes... plus, I don't speak for Boxee and there is always the chance I'm 100% wrong.... Fun game, read some of my old posts about Hulu integration, and how hard it would be for the team to wrap Flash players.)

Wow! Thats one of the most detailed posts I've seen from AL (or is it abbreviated al?) in a while.... and I thought I was long winded....

Oh, and I think you nailed the point...

agent or just Neil.

I try to be a bit more detailed when explaining why something is unlikely to happen.

Otherwise it just comes off as:
Nope. Too bad, so sad.

For support topics, I find that it is often easier to just post a link to something I wrote a year ago. A lot of that stuff ages well. :)
