View Full Version : is there a way in boxee to response on asynchronous messages?

hello everybody

we are looking for some multimedia center as tool, which we would like to use for our smart home system. the idea is clear - system full of sensors is taking care about the home (checking temperature, fire, humidity, ...) and in the case of emergency, it creates events, sends emails or starts some alarm.

so we want to connect our system with boxee and send such messages from the system to the boxee.

the question follows - is there some kind of "message bus" in boxee, where can be such information propagated? and then - is it possible in boxee to break playback of any multimedia and show some dialog with warning/alarm as a response for such event? or maybe - is there a different way for this scenario?

thanks for response.

You could do this, but you'd have to launch it everytime you launch boxee

what do you mean exactly? do i need to run it manualy? as boxee app? which will just start separate thread listening for messages comming from "outer space"?

Yep. You could possibly add python code into the home.xml? Dunno, never tried

hmm... if the user needs to run it manualy, is not very good solution :-( users are prone to forget ;)

and one more question - is there some virtual or on-screen keyboard available inside of boxee? if i want to use it as media center with remote control only, such widget (as moovida has for example) will be very handy.

anyway - thanks for answers ;)

mc.ShowDialogKeyboard() - read more about it here: http://developer.boxee.tv/Python_API_mc_Module

I would like to see Boxee with on screen CallerID. Most new cable and satellite boxes will show the incoming phone number and name on screen. It would not have to be a land line either, with a blue tooth adapter in the Boxee PC you could display incoming calls from your cell phone.

Here's a thread on editing the home.xml file
