as sdavilla works his magic, getting us all a 2.3 compliant atvusb-creator and launcher/updater, you can try the following to manually install boxee.

first, get latest and greatest atvusb-creator from http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/downloads/list

after making a usb stick, and booting the ATV with it, you should be able to ssh into the ATV:

figure out the IP address of the ATV via Settings > General > Network, for this example, i will use 10.0.0.8.
ssh to ATV

- mac/linux: use terminal and type
ssh frontrow@10.0.0.8 the password is frontrow

- windows: get putty (http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe), and connect to 10.0.0.8
at the prompt, run the following commands, when asked for password, its frontrow:

wget http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/files/XBMCLauncher-0.6-debug.run

wget http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/svn/tags/xbmc-info/scripts/launcher-update-0.6.sh

sh launcher-update-0.6.sh XBMCLauncher-0.6-debug.run

wget http://dl.boxee.tv/boxee-0.9.4277.dmg

wget http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/svn/tags/boxee-info/scripts/alpha-0.9.4277_update.sh

sh alpha-0.9.4277_update.sh boxee-0.9.4277.dmg

sudo reboot

and presto, boxee is up and running.

new remote behavior:

long "select" switches between now playing and ui
long "menu" takes you home
back on login screen takes you out

known caveats:

with the update to 2.3, Apple broke a few things, one being the ability of the app to consistently appear in foreground. till this is figured out, if you run boxee, and get a black screen, you need to back out of boxee by clicking menu on the remote, and try launching boxee again.
under some circumstances, if upgrading an older boxee install, the remote may not work under boxee. please reboot, ssh into the ATV, and do:
rm -rf /Users/frontrow/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/UserData

yes. boxee does not touch your atv existing resources.

Hi,

I have boxee installed already, but haven't gotten the apple 2.3 upgrade yet.

Can I just ssh & following the instructions, wget the new version? Or must I use a new patchstick to upgrade?

"wget http://dl.boxee.tv/boxee-0.9.4277.dmg"

Wait! Is that a new version for AppleTV (from 4166)???

Any notable bug fixes there?

Also ... is 'wget' on AppleTV Take 2 without copying it over? Do we need to download the wget binary somewhere (http://www.finkconsulting.com/opensource/wget-1.9.1.dmg for instance)?

Looking forward to upgrading ...

Make sure that when you create the bootstick that you include both ssh and the bin tools. I don't know if I am technically correct, but the "wget" command wasn't recognized unless bin tools was included on the patchstick.

Upon loading boxee I have gotten a black screen that won't go away. This forces me to reboot through ssh. I have gotten Boxee to load, however, the remote doesn't work, so I can't navigate.

Anyone have any suggestions on the remote?

Maybe wget is a more recent addition to the patchstick (I'm not in front of my AppleTV right now, just going from memory based on the patchstick created in the middle of October). Sounds like we need to re-patch (create the 0.8 patchstick, reboot with it in, etc), then?

Do we have to factory restore the AppleTV before re-patching? Or, will it work on a patched-then updated to 2.3 AppleTV?

Created 1.0b8 patchstick and ran all the ssh commands successfully, no issues. Tom, I ran the update and re-patch on a patched 2.2.

First time trying boxee it black screened and could not exit, rebooted ATV.

Second time boxee loaded, but same problem as nace33, no response to the remote. :(

@tsella on twitter said to fix this run this command in ssh then reboot:
rm -rf /Users/frontrow/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/UserData

Did that, and now my remote is working again. :-) (thanks @nace33!)

I left out the possibility that Boxee may be freezing and the remote was actually working fine. I don't know if that is what the issue was but here is how it was fixed.

I tweeted with Tsella and he was able to fix my issues with the remote in about five min. He are the steps he told me to follow.

1. See if there is a boxeeservice running. "ps aux | grep boxeeservice" EDIT: [I am not sure this is necessary to fix the remote problem, could have just been a diagnostic step].
2. if So, delete it the user data. "rm -rf /Users/frontrow/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/UserData"
3. Reboot.

That did the trick. No more black screens or freezing. Running Great. It appears that people who upgrade from previous versions may have this issue.

Thanks @Tsella and @boxee. I am super impressed with Boxee and its support team.

Hey,
In addition to boxee, I also have nitoTV on my atv v2.2

There's no info on the awkwardTV nitoTV page, so I'm asking here...
Has anyone w/ nitoTV upgraded to v2.3? If so, does it still work?

Thanks

I replied to boxee earlier in the week before the apple upgrade with a error log.

All was working ok until apple upgrade. tonight i have followed the 2.3 atv fix from thread above and when ssh in to atv I get the following result. is someone goofing on me - I really need help

Before ssh'ing in to your ATV, enter the following from your terminal prompt:

rm ~/.ssh/known_hosts

Then, try to ssh in again. Should work. I'm guessing you had to restore your ATV since the last time you ssh'd in, which probably generated new RSA keys, causing this warning.

Hi guys,

I have a serious issue and unfortunatley lacking of uni knowledge to solve it on my own. I followed the procedure ahead and updated to v2.3. which went fine. Then installed the bootloader as usual and rebooted the atv. Finally I ended up suddenly at the factory restore/diagnostic site. By running the factory restore I get the error message: Restore to factory condition failed.

Trying to boot up with the bootloader ends up in the error message:
/OSBoot/Users/frontrow/staging 'Read-Only' file system, installation not possible.

Is someone able to get me out of this mess? :-/

Thanks a lot in advance and kind regards

Thanks for the quick update! Just one small problem. When I updated, my remote didn't work, so I used:

rm -rf /Users/frontrow/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/UserData

This wiped my username from the login screen which makes sense, but when I go to recreate my username, it is saying "Password Incorrect". This doesn't make any sense to me because I am creating a new user. How could my password be wrong. Maybe I am being an idiot or something.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I upgraded my ATV to 2.3 hoping I could follow the instructions in this thread but it seems I've locked up my ATV. Right now it's sitting at the main menu but is not responding to the remote.

I did all the wget and sh steps as described, even removed the UserData directory, rebooted several times. I even retried the process twice but every time the ATV comes back up, it's at the main menu and I can't interact with it.

This is the output last time I tried the upgrade:

Are you on OS X 10.5.5? 1.0b8 doesn't seem to work well with 10.5.5 (I reported the error a few hours before 2.3 was released). Use 1.0b7 instead to get the SSH tools installed and then update all the other stuff manually using wget.

To be honest, instead of pinpointing the problem, if I were you I would restore factory settings, then update to 2.3, then use the new patchstick and follow the instructions. That way everything should work...

If you don't want to do all that, does the remote work with Apple TV but not Boxee? If it works with the Apple TV then try to remove the user data again with:

rm -rf /Users/frontrow/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/UserData

If that doesn't work, you can always try to unpair and pair the remote again by holding the Pause/Rewind Button (Left) and Menu at the same time for 6 seconds.

Yes, I could ssh and I fixed the problem. It's just that my remote had become unpaired from the ATV.. Confusingly the Apple instructions for repairing remotes at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1555?viewlocale=en_US
suggest pressing and holding Menu and Next. It's actually Menu and Prev!

Just as a point of clarification, and because I am sipping Tuaca, speaking to setting up the patchstick (...b7 or ...b8 version). Are we putting all four options on the patchstick (as we do in the pre-2.3 tutorial) or should we only use one set-up with the ssh tools and red-x the other choices (when using the atvusb-creator)?

Also, we are to first update to atv2.3 then pull the plug on the ATV and pop in the patchstick. At that point, we follow the instructions set forth in this post Correct?

Thanks and cheers...

Worked well for me. Had one hitch, but that was self inflicted. 'sudo' anything ended up unable to find the commands; the path wasn't working. I'd previously added a .bash_profile to add some convenient aliases to bash. Turns out, the path (including /usr/bin and /usr/sbin, etc) was set up in .bash_login, and that doesn't get read if there's a .bash_profile. So, had to copy the PATH setup lines from .bash_login to .bash_profile.

After that, all worked flawlessly.

So far, everything is working well. Hulu seems maybe a little smoother, but still noticeably jittery.

Important step, unplug and reboot after booting off the patchstick then ssh in. works as advertised...even after mas tuaca. Thanks!

install went great, many many thanks for getting all of this figured out!!

I kept having the black screen, even after the suggested removal above. Figured out that if you go to another screen on the AppleTV side, it will work.

Let me explain in steps:

1. when you start AppleTV, the Boxee menu is selected, so nothing loads in the background.
2. switch to Top Movies or something to let the screen load with something
3. go back to the menu and load boxee
4. the act of loading something on AppleTV seems to give boxee something to display in front of.

well, that wasn't the best descriptions, but I hope it works for folks.

When this part worked in the past then I would use the patchstick on the atv and it worked perfectly. Now I don't know enough about this to fix the problem when I open the patchstick on the mac. Sorry if this is really basic, I'm still learning. Thanks a bunch!

Another data point, I upgraded to 2.3. I used the ATVPatchstick2.1 image file that I used earlier was able to logon to ATV over SSH. Also installed laucher and Boxee using tsella's instructions.

Boxee runs well most of the times. I have the same blank screen problem mentioned in tsella's post. The apple remote and a custom remote work well in boxee.

So for those of us that have 2.2 and an existing Boxee install, we need to:

* Update to 2.3
* Re-patchstick the ATV
* Install Boxee/XBMC once again?

Or is it more complicated than that?

Okay, understanding that we are on the bleeding edge of Boxee on ATV 2.3, I still have a few questions:

Is there an answer to b9 of ATVUSB Creator making Fat32 partitions on 10.5.5? Does it still do that (intead of hfsplus or whatever)? If so, can we update the preexisting usb stick we already have with the required changes and then use that to fix our updated ATVs?

Is there an "official" thread for Boxee working on ATV 2.3 that I have not seen? This thread is under "Announcements" but does not seem like it is exactly "official"

Thx

I was about to ask the same thing... I've been reading the whole thread but I'm still confused on what to do if I'm already running Boxee on TV 2.2

Any risk to loose the data on the Boxee partition by updating to 2.3??

According to this post: http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=13717&postcount=6 the ATVUSB Creator makes a FAT32 partition on version 8 and 9 by design.

I used version 9 this morning. Created the USB on a Mac with 10.5.5, updated by ATV to 2.3, patched it with the v9 patchstick and I'm back up and running like before. In fact, I'm running better because I now have the SoftwareMenu add-on.

Well, it does not look like v8 or v9 of the patchstick worked for me. I could not get the ATV to recognize it. I have a blue "activity light" on my usb key drive and it flashed (like it normally used to do) for about 5 seconds...then the ATV in 2.3 just bypassed it and booted the normal ATV software. What did work was reverting to v7 of the patchstick and following the manual instructions at the start of this thread. I *did* have to remove my userdata prefs like said (if black screen) and now have had to get used to going into "My TV Shows" before going to boxee so Boxee could "come to front" correctly.

Hope this will be all fixed soon. (ps: 10.5.5 of Leopard looks like it DOES have an issue (unfixed) with v9 of patchstick...) Hope patchstick is fixed soon so i can "Boxify" my 2 other ATVs

What a week I've had. I only discovered Boxee last week, loaded it onto my ATV and salivated over the possibilities it would open up to me (still haven't gotten my ID yet, so I haven't actually been able to mess with Boxee). Like a fool, I ran the Apple TV update to 2.3 and lost Boxee/XBMC. Today I grabbed the new ATVUSB-creator b9 and made a new patchstick using the same exact USB drive I'd used last week for b7. Now, just like janngobble, I can't get my ATV to recognize the patchstick with v9. I created it on an Intel Macbook running 10.5.5, and nothing. So then I used my PPC dual 2 GHz G5 to create the patchstick, and nothing again. I factory restored my ATV, updated to 2.3, tried the whole thing over again, and nothing. I've scoured the posts on this forum trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong (I'm fairly confident it's user error, because that's typically the case), but I'm at a loss. If anyone can help me, I'd be eternally grateful!

See the first entry for manual updating ... it works

EXCEPT for whenever the "Apple TV is updating from iTunes" appears in the screen (or whatever that darn line is). It throws Boxee into the background and it never comes back :(

Is there a good reason to upgrade to ATV 2.3? All the problems everyone is having I don't see the need to update yet. I just disabled the update option and am waiting for a good reason or a better firmware to update.

Well, my reason in updating was Video Playlists.

I have a penchant for needing to hear TV when I go to sleep. Right now I have full-length episodes separately on the ATV. I also have 3 files per season with up to 5 or 8 episodes back-to-back. This takes up a lot of space. So i updated to be able to let the ATV simply use a video playlist for the season.

It is also great for the kids. The entire season of Barney (for instance) when you are cooking for thanksgiving is a godsend! :D It is worth the loss of Boxee while they fix the bugs in the ATV 2.3 implementation.

I updated to 2.3 a little to quickly and I am now trying to manually workaround. I can't get the ssh session started.

MacBook:~ Gordon$ ssh frontrow@10.0.1.199
ssh: connect to host 10.0.1.199 port 22: Connection refused

Any ideas?

Me Bad.
When I followed the directions and downloaded the latest atvusb-creator v10 and went through the install, everything was back to working. I have some issues with hulu but nothing major(having to hit pause then play before the black screen goes away) That could also be me.
Thanks team

Hi

I finally got everything installed and was trying to check out boxee and xbmc and I must have done something wrong. I have a black screen and I can't get back by using menu. I can play music from itunes, but I can't get back to the menu. I saw your suggestions about using the console, but I don't know how to do that. Is it on my mac?

Wish you would'a asked that 2 days ago. I fragged mine and then it started working.

PS: b9 (with manual work-around) and b10 (without manual workaround) are both functional on v2.3 HOWEVER, you still need to go to MY TV SHOWS or some other menu option THEN go to Boxee for Boxee to show up.

Is this a known issue still with the "ATV 2.3 foreground bug (and launcher)?"

Anyway.. if you need anything from us, let us know.

I also had the black screen and no remote. What fixed it for me was, first fix remote with code. At this point I could use menu to back out at black screen and just kept trying to restart boxee about 25 more times using menu each time to back out. Finally it just worked. Once it did, I had to reenter my login info and now it works fine. Just don't give up.

Mine started black-screening just tonight, after a couple days of working perfectly. I set aside the entire UserData folder then zipped it up. The archive is 68 MB. Restarted Boxee with no UserData folder (recreated that folder) and everything works now.

Where do you want it? I'll email the same question so you can just reply to my email with somewhere to put it.

Unfortunately, until the launcher code is fixed to handle several 2.3 changes there is no tried and true perfected method to fix (permanently) the black screen of death in ATV v2.3.

This is alpha code. Hang in there, k? It *is* worth it! Consider the continual quick add-on of new TV and Movie/Internet sources. They are making sure all (except Netflix) operate on all platforms before considering the job "done". They will fix Netflix (I am sure) however Avner and the group is working night and day to get this working correctly. Hacking the ATV is much harder due to the memory footprint and lack of decent CPU/GPU hardware in the ATV. Hey Avner (and group): Ever think of using the GPU in the ATV (a la Snow Leopard) to get more horsepower for things like the Silverlight player? <grin> (joke, fellas -- I have read the GPU threads on the board and understand it would require reverse-engineering the drivers)

The fact that it is working at all on the ATV is amazing! Consider this project akin to VLC (VideoLan) in that it works well most of the time but it does so much for so many different sources and so many different formats that it will be harder to fix when there is a problem like this. And, of course, because there is no valid API that is documented for the ATV they are continually dealing with changes that Apple makes in the ATV OS.

The BEST way (if you can do without Video Playlists) is to revert to whatever firmware your ATV came with then upgrade to ATV 2.2 (instructions on the board somewhere...will find later and post the link). Then install the newest USB Creator and lock the ATV from updating (using the new menu option in Boxee's Loader). That way you are guaranteed to stop the Black Screen of Death.

Sorry .. May not be what you wanted to hear.

The problem is you do lose the speed benefits of 2.3... :(

So is it safe to update XMBC/Boxee from the in-ATV 2.3 menu?

I've searched "far and wide" in the forum and perhaps have missed the critical piece of information I need to get things working on the ATV. I'm using OSX 10.5.6, and have recently update appleTV to 2.3. Just started using ATV. I'm also using the avusb-creator-1.0b10 to create my patchstick. In addition I have a sony 1080i set, I've connected through HDMI, and digital optical out for sound.
Just a few questions:

1. In the instruction when it says boot to the patchstick....Are we putting all four options on the patchstick (as we do in the pre-2.3 tutorial) or should we only use one set-up with the ssh tools or Boxee/XBMC and red-x the other choices (when using the atvusb-creator)? And then go through the normal instruction set. I have no problem doing a factory reset, updating to 2.3....just want to be clear on the steps

2. I've gotten Boxee running, although XBMC following some of the instructions so far. But...Boxee is "hanging" off the edges of the screen, I've tried changing the appleTV screen resolution to 720p, instead of 1080i, but doesn't seem to work, is there something I'm missing. I don't see a resolution or zoom setting in Boxee like there is in XBMC (the one time I had it working).

3. I have a windows XP simple fileserver on a wired connection. All the drives with media are shared, and I though my firewall was allowing connections, is there a specific port, I've seen a number of answers when search...(perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place) but is there some trick or critical issue/setting I'm perhaps not seeing.

I'm pretty comfortable now with SSH, your instuctions are pretty good, again not sure if I'm missing some critical step.

Thanks in advance for your help.
