Sorry for bein' a noob on networking issues, but, what is and what could someone do with the settings under: Settings/Network/SMB Client ?
The knowledgebase doesnt' really tell me anything:
http://boxee.zendesk.com/entries/192003-settings-network
...and mild searches have shown no results.

I'm only familiar with the fact that one can set up SMB shares on a network.
By default lets say I have 3 pcs on the same network in my home, and Boxee in on my main HTPC. I will just typically 'share' the media on the other 2pcs in my home and Boxee see all of them.

Is the setting above related to this?
Or would it be related to sharing Boxee as a server to other pcs?
Or would it give access to another 'server' that's a Samba server, such as Popcorn Hour?
Or other?

Thanks

If your SMB shares require (regardless if they're on a Windows system or others) a username and password to connect, then this is where you would enter them.

If no username/password is required, then you need not use these settings.

Thanks for some feedback.
Any examples of some mainstream situations/products/systems that would require SMB share access and/or why it would be setup that way vs a 'general' share?

SMB (Samba, used to be CIFS) is a file sharing (I guess that's the easiest way to describe it) protocol that windows uses by default when you right click a folder and then click share.

Unless you have permissions setup on your SMB shares on the other two PC's in your home network, and all three computers are in the same workgroup, you should not need to change any of the SMB Client settings in boxee. I use boxee as a SMB Client, and since I have not placed any permissions on my shared folders I did not need to change the username or password (just left as default). The Web Server mentions in that page are for web based remotes for boxee (boxee remote apps for IPhone and Android). Again I just left the username and password as default.

Here is the a page that may answer your question with how Boxee works with SMB.

I hope it helps...
