All,

I remember a question on getsatisfied a while back, basically asking what do you want in a Boxee iPad app...

I thought i'd bring the converation back up, and start by adding my own requests:

The same navigation we have with the current iPhone app (but smaller and in the corner)
Full library browser, including the queue and feed
Ability to edit settings and such directly from the iPad

Infact, if you look closley at the requests, it may be easier to simply release a remote app which mimics the actual Boxee interface, but on the iPad.

Also, when users select content, they have the option of playing it back on their iPad (if available), or being presented with a list of dicsovered Boxee devices on the network that the content can be played back on. ( see pics)

Users could then actually control their boxee directly, and eaisly.

What do you think?

I want something like this but for Boxee:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xbmc-remote-hd/id364270422?mt=8

I don't know about anybody else, I don't really need the option to play video on the iPad.

I don't really need the option to play video on the iPad.

I do. And on my iPhone too. While on my LAN and remotely, over 3G.

Since we're asking ;)

iBeech, that looks awesome! What I need to use Boxee is exactly that, but as a web interface, so it's not locked to iCrap products only.

I don't have an iPad yet, but I'm thinking of buying one and what I would like to see in a Boxee app is:

1) As suggested by iBeech, a Boxee library browser using the same interface as the Boxee desktop app with the ability to play content directly on the iPad (where this is possible) or on a Boxee device.

2) A local content database for video files which are stored on the iPad so these can be played from within the Boxee interface. This would mean that DRM content on the iPad could be played, since playback would be handled by the standard media player on the iPad. This would also mean that if you have the same movie on a Boxee device and on your iPad, the iPad could play that movie from the local file and avoid bandwidth issues.

This will be the holy grail for Boxee, if done right. Whatever is done should be available for iOS and Android, and also have a scaled-down version for smaller screens (iPhone, Droid, etc.).

My request list (fully understanding that some may be difficult if not impossible):

1) Full GUI with full content browsing with cover art, fan art, trailers, and (if possible) full streaming of all Boxee content over wifi and 3G.

2) Log-in control to exclude multiple users from controlling all features. Be able to "lock in" one touchscreen, and "lock out" others so that you don't end up with pranksters and dueling remotes

3) Base station differentiation. Like Sonos, you need to be able to select which hardware you are controlling in which room

4) Option to cache data locally. You should be able to select the option to create a local file on the touchscreen to store cover art, etc. in order to speed up searching. You should also be able to limit the size of the file.

5) Ability to wake NAS/WHS from the touchscreen automatically upon boot up.

6) Ability to start up Boxee apps and control them all within the same touchscreen app.

7) AirPlay-equivalent. You should be able to push content from the touchscreen to Boxee, including apps.

You want video playback and full boxee gui, just download a vnc app. For and app, make a new gui making navigation easier based on touch, with all the options of boxee sans video playback.

Nice to know you guys are working on the ipad app for Boxee remote control.
To me, the exact interface on PC would be best. With the touchscreen of ipad, it'd be super easy to navigate around. Viewing movie is not so needed.
Anw, just want to stress more on one point, full library navigation is a MUST to a lot of people including me I think.

Oh and of course, auto pop-out keykoard when typing is needed should be included.

Just as AtomicFlow said, "This is the Holy Grail", but not only for Boxee. Great to read you guys are among the first on the market, who work on a solid solution for an Ipad remote for a decent video and audio mediaplayer like the boxee box. This would actually be more than an alternative to buying a popcorn c-200 for movies and a sonos 90 for music. I am looking for exactly that combination for quite a while and if you guys get that done right it will be two boxee boxes for christmas...as long as amazon will be able to deliver on time over here in Europe...

Coming back to the actual topic I can just agree, that the initial post of iBeech looks great. The following features would be crucial to me:

1. full content browsing on a full GUI for movies as well as music and fotos including cover arts and playlists/queues
2. option to cache data locally on the ipad as AtomicFlow posted
3. option to put the boxee in sleep mode via Ipad
4. ability to edit settings/folders/names etc. on the box and the external storage
5. ability to select the "player" boxee 1/boxee 2/ipad for movies, music and photos
6. a sonos like player differentiation for different boxes running would be the icing on the cake.

Quite a list I know, but if you guys can get somewhat close to these features I'll be the first to buy two boxes as soon as they'll be available on Amazon Germany

Cheers

I would be happy with the iPhone app just the way it is, only converted for the larger iPad screen that also had a keyboard option.

If I had a keyboard option, I would finally be able to retire my full size wireless keyboard. No longer would I have to reach behind the couch and grab the keyboard when I wanted to do a search...

I would pay for that app!!!

I'm starting to want an instapaper-like app for internet video for the Ipad..

Something similar to the boxee bookmarklet, does anyone know if such a thing exists?

Edit: Radbox.com is what I was looking for.

I am trying to make a remote right now and i have been using just basic HTTP commands. i am trying to find the command like Play_file or something that i can just go directly to content on my hard drive or directly to an app. I am new at this so if anybody could help me that would be great. sorry if i dont know the proper terms for things.

Funny, I just started a similar thread (http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=30503) about Android.

Basically, what is needed is a Boxee thin client, that could go to your Boxee server, fetch a copy of the media database (or optimized version thereof), and provide a similar interface for controlling your server.

My guess would be that actually playing video through the app is a long shot. First, there are other apps you could set up that could read media off a file share if that's what you wanted, and second, you'd basically be talking about not just making a remote but literally making a tablet Boxee app. That's probably more work than folks are interested in.

But being able to control Boxee completely from a tablet has so many possibilities...

Isn't this already coming from Boxee directly?

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/01/07/ces-2011-boxee-for-ipad-previewed/

And from Boxee themselves:
Boxee for iPad

We have been working the past few months on Boxee for iPad, and while it is not ready to launch we are giving people at the CES Show a sneak peek of the App. It enables you to access videos from your Watch Later list as well as from your Feed (stuff shared from Facebook / Twitter), and staying true to Boxee roots also enables you to stream videos directly to the iPad from your PC/Mac (without requiring you to sync).

You can watch videos on the iPad using the new app, but it only takes one click to send that video to your D-Link/Iomega/ViewSonic Boxee device. “Ze nice,” as we say in the office. from http://blog.boxee.tv/2011/01/06/boxee-at-vegas-cbs-vudu-3d-sneak-peek-at-our-ipad-app/
