Let's have this thread dedicated to mentioning things that work/ don't work about the new Boxee Box v1.0

I've got lots of them.

- Keeps on saying update available to 1.0.1.16126 (from 1.0.1.16125) but after udate/download and reboot/install the version is still 1.0.1.16125

- no video but audio from apps.

- shows all load up the basic html5 browser but do not load the videos/shows

-citytv
-global
-fancast

none of these channels videos actually load.

Horrible source quality but mine is in full screen (4:3) and no green banner or anything.

Try power cycling your box and see if that helps.

Video with green and lined overlays above transposed video. choppy and jittery. audio sounds good though.

As previously stated, it appears to be updating over and over again with a required update, that just installs the version that's already installed. Also all of my shows I watch that are streaming show up in a browser, not fullscreen. Vudu doesn't work - it says coming soon, but I was under the impression that it was part of the launch lineup.

Rebooted, and clicked on Alice in Wonderland again. now it goes to fullscreen youtube window, has audio playing, but NO video.

Playing in 1080i 50Hz, will try a lower video quality and see if it makes any difference.

I don't really care for watching the Tron-Derezzed by Daft Punk, but I figured I'd try it out.

After clicking it, received a "Playback Error - Either the format is not supported or the file is corrupted."

I can't reproduce your video problems -- Tron/De-rezzed is playing in glorious 1080p for me right now.

Perhaps a factory restore would help:

Power off, wait 10 seconds.
Hold the power button down 6-8 seconds, then release
Boxee will take a while to start up
Choose from the onscreen options and follow the prompts from there

Works, image quality is ehh...(Run from 720p) was expecting better image quality, along with not so much flickering of the sides of each picture, but it works....

OK, thank you this definitely helped. The Tron video by Daft Punk does work. would be great if the loader bar didn't have to stay up the whole time. having said that, it works!!!:):D

just a couple of days ago, everyone was all like "oh, it makes sense to hold back on the v1.0 and concentrate on getting the boxee box working right before they roll v1.0 out to all current users..."

I cant help but think lots of these problems might not be there is boxee had released 1.0 to its beta testers (which is what we all are!!!) first!

all these problems are very, very embarrassing for boxee. Imagine if this happened with a microsoft/apple/google device - factory resets on day 1 - Please.

Went and clicked on a Friends video (played through WB).

Good news: video plays from web page embed. I'm able to move mouse cursor with d-pad control on boxee remote.

Bad news: cannot view in fullscreen. when moving the cursor onto the expand button of the video frame, clicking the center button on the remote just pauses the video. cannot use the play/pause button on the page, only the click button will do anything.

Although I agree with your sentiments, please lets keep this thread as objective as possible.

More can be handled by the Boxee/D-Link support if we just give them the objective facts of what is or isn't working with your new Boxee box. Please post opinions in another thread or start a new thread. Thank you.

I posted about this in a separate thread, but I guess I will post here as well. I am getting what I am referring to as the dark-grey screen of death. On each boot attempt, I get the loading screen, then the intro cube video thing, then an infinite grey screen. All factory reset attempts have resulted in error 0x314.

EDIT: I am also wondering if it is possible to download the firmware images or whatever can be used with the install update from usb recovery menu item. I would like to try this while waiting for support to get back to me about the DGSOD

Played Colbert Report, launches into webpage that takes up most of the screen. If you press menu button, there are the expand/fullscreen arrows next to search bar. When pressed, loads into full screen. Success!!!:):D So we know now if you want to watch Colbert (and probably John Stewart) in Full Screen, shouldn't have any problems.

I just performed a factory restore, and now video is 'working'. It shows video, but at about 0.5 fps, and only in the upper left-hand corner of the screen (everything else is placed correctly on the screen, it's only the video that's not taking up the full screen).

Loaded up NCIS, works through Fancast. loaded up into a widescreen mode, but not fullscreen. video worked fine, audio fine. After about a minute, I have a black box taking up 75% of the screen. Also, no Fullscreen button available. Lots of tv screen space being wasted.

Try doing a factory restore. Also- it does look like there is an option to load from USB in the factory restore menu. Post your results if you choose to do this please.

...All factory reset attempts have resulted in error 0x314

Already tried. Many times. Did I mention that it has not booted for me ever? If I were going to guess, I would say the ROM where the factory firmware is installed never got flashed, which is why I want to try installing a firmware from USB. Only problem is that the firmware files are not posted anywhere.

CALLING ALL BOXEE PEOPLE: could somebody please put the firmware files online somewhere? Relying solely on autoupdate is a bad idea.

- No SMB Client option so Guest accounts have to be activated
- No constant media scanning
- Menu feels really slughish and framed.... on my MacMini it feels awesome... This thing can play 1080p 60fps without breaking a sweat but can't display a menu smoothly? Come on!
- Sometimes the TV screen blacks out for a second then image is back with some red flickering artifacts (This could be hardware so I might go get it exchanged)

Everything else seems to be great but the first two could be a deal breaker for me

Issue #1 - Lock-up

Under Settings, selected File Sources and then selected Unidentified Files.

BB does the spinning circle search for about 60 seconds then goes black - total lockup. Requires a hard reset. Reboots fine, but I won't be doing another search.

Issue #2 - All Shared SAMBA Sources Are NOT Present

I have 8 Shared Folders. Only 6 of them are showing up, even after Rescan Sources.

That's it for now. I'll definitely have more.

Other issue: it's all very sluggish. Menu navigation is inconsistent in speed, as is text entry and such. It's like BB is updating everything in the background, but slowing down everything in the foreground. Gotta devote resources to take care of the user first and foremost.

I get prompted for a username/password when accessing shares off of my WHS -- works just fine.

- No constant media scanning

There were performance issues that haven't been resolved with the frequent scanning; not sure what's going to happen next but at least you can force a rescan. But I'd sure like the option of scanning every X number of hours, myself.

I've only been using the thing for a few hours and it's already frozen up more times than any other device in my house over the last year.

Hell, I woke up this morning and turned the TV on and the unit was frozen on the screensaver for Gods sake.. Totally unresponsive to any remote button presses etc

If I start playing a standard definition South Park XVID and try pressing the right arrow to skip the opening 30 second intro, it locks up.

The thing has locked up so many times so far, I think I'm bringing this back to Future Shop for a refund.. Never had any of these problems with XBMC

Not good to hear. Kind of worried of this device now...lots of bugs and such. If I can connect online sometime soon, I'll post my impressions.

Local Samba Shares are failing. Even though my local computer (Mac, running OS 10.5.8) is up and running, in addition to all shared drives, BB says "Disconnected" if the internet drops for any reason (which has been happening more and more, see below).

No reason they should be, as using UPnP on the same drives and files works just fine.

Also, I'm noticing my internet connection is dropping quite consistently whenever BB is running. Connecting via DSL using PPPoE through a Time Machine, then dispersing the wireless accordingly to BB and other devices. If this was just an issue of the wireless failing, that'd be one thing, but I'm seeing actual internet drops and my router looking for the modem and internet access. This wasn't happening before I attached the BB yesterday.

File playback from an external drive seems OK thus far, though with occasional loss of sound on some files and problems when quitting a video mid-stream - this brings BB to a crawl, with extended pauses between menu shifts and failed rescanning/presentation of drive directories.

All-in-all, this is so not ready for prime time - if we're out of alpha testing, we're in early beta, baby.

I loved this thing when it arrived yesterday. Sure, it was a little slow here and there and locked up a little, but it's a new product. That's the price of early adoption.

Then, today, I noticed a software update. I went to apply it, and was greeted with an 0x314 error. I tried re-installing and the same error. Restarting the box would only bring me to a recovery menu with the options to install the software (which gives an error each time), install from usb (there are not files available), or do a factory reset. After a dozen or so failed installs and restarts, I went with the factory reset.

Now, when I turn it on, I get the factory-fresh welcome message telling me it needs to go online. So I hit start and it tells me there's a new version of software and only gives me an option to Begin.

Then it just gets stuck on the Downloading Now screen, at 0%, saying "Calculating..."

This is extremely frustrating.

EDIT: After around 25 factory resets (I'm persistent), it stopped requiring me to download the new version. I'm back to 0.9.21.14131 in all of its working glory.

Agree with paper weight comment. 200 dollars is TOO much when I can simply hook up my computer. I don't need a pretty box that barely works.

Same issues with SUBs on MKV files.

Streaming anything from the web with wifi connection is miserable!

CrunchyRoll streaming is terrible.

UPNP connection not recognizing external drive even though MediaTomb recognizes it.

The external service for Subtitles is pathetic. They either don't have the subtitles or they have displyed subtitles for different movies.

This is pathetic, I need to find out what Amazons return policy is and send this paper weight back.

**EDIT**

m4v files play the audio but there is no video!

I might as well keep my laptop under the TV and never update the software.

Defecting? Here is what happened:
1. Boxee is released
2. People that use boxee love it
3. Boxee works well
4. Boxee box is announced! Hooray! A dedicated system for all my media.
5. Boxee box is released. Everything is broken. Half the features on the pc version are not available (yet) and most people cannot access their media stored on their home computer.

People were expecting a dedicated boxee box. What they got was something else.

Last time I checked their software has been out for a couple years. First day huh? OH YOU MEAN HARDWARE!

I am sure myself, and everyone else who is equally frustrated (have you noticed the small number of bb threads cropping up?) are all idiots as well. :)

I was expecting something that works to continue working. I must be completely retarded to have high expectations of a product I have loved for the past year. And boxee makes no profit from the boxes, but they do make profits.

Still getting recurring issues with Samba shares and being disconnected from the internet (my entire network, actually).

The Samba shares work fine...and then they don't. And once they go down, they don't restore until a restart.

UPnP works fine even when Samba doesn't. Very odd.

Network/internet drops happening frequently - but what's even more frustrating than the drops is that Boxee Box (a) seems to be causing the drops in the first place, (b) can't consistently determine when the connection is restored, and (c) doesn't re-establish lost contact with Samba shares (they show up as Disconnected).

I'm no networking master, but why would Boxee Box lose connection with Samba shares if the network itself is working just fine? Why wouldn't it re-establish lost contact? And why would UPnP work just fine (though quite slow, imho), even when Samba isn't working - with the same exact folders?

When the Samba share works, the video is crisp, audio is perfect. So, it does work well ... when it wants to work at all.

Not going to expect any miracles over the next few days, but I sure hope these are resolved. That said, going to watch a show on my ATV2.

Listen man... I agree with you... but this is the first day...

99% of the new threads are from people not willing to do a little searching for an answer... or are just being impatient on day 1 of a launch.

Like you... I've been running boxee for a year and I love it... I jumped at an opportunity to grab a small box that would take up a smaller footprint and require less power to serve my video needs. It is not perfect... but I think team boxee will improve it... I mean... it seems that it is software related issues...

It could be software related issues. But then it could be hardware. They switched from nvidia to intel stuff so perhaps not everything was cohesive. I have one bar of wifi and it is seriously 20 feet from the router. I doubt they can pull an apple and say "it is our algorithm." No I am not holding the boxee box wrong.

People were expecting a wow product. Even if it was released to the wild a day early, this is annoying.

Apple released the iphone 4 and it had antenna problems. Serious antenna problems. The group of boxee fanboys are smaller than apple fanboys, but in the same way we want a working product when it comes out. For many people, they cannot get video working (like myself.) In other words, that new iphone 4 cant even make a phone call.

I want them to fix things. I want them to hammer through this because I love the design, I love the idea, and I love boxee. And from the lack of admin/mod activity I assume there is a frenzy going on in the code-room trying to get stuff fixed. Heck, they released the new version TODAY when they said it was going to be tomorrow. I am definitely going to give them some time, but not long enough to let my return policy from amazon expire. This is a christmas gift for my mom who is not technologically inclined. She would have trouble doing anything if I gave this to her on Christmas day. And it would be out of warranty be then too. I am glad I tested it out.

I can't get over some of whining by people. For christ sake give them a few days to sort things out. Every streamer out there has had issues upon it's release.

My Popcorn Hour A-110 had all sorts of issues when I first bought it. The DEVS eventually sorted it out. I didn't cry on the first day and take it back.

I can play M2TS files streaming from my PC downstairs wirelessly without any stutter. I could not do that on the Popcorn Hour.

So far I've found a few files that seem to hang up the Boxee Box. One MKV rip of an Earth ISO. The ISO seemed a bit suspect to begin with. It seems Boxee has a problem after encountering a badly coded file. If I play something that has a glitch and I try playing other files afterwards. Those files play very jerky until I do a reboot.

If you're having streaming problems, it could be your router firmware. I was using DD-WRT and was having issues with HD streams. I reverted back to the OEM Firmware and have no problems now. Streaming Conan from the Comedy Network and the quality is quite good. They need to fix the thumbnail as it's showing "Conan The Barbarian"

I'm sure the DEVS are working hard to fix bugs that are being brought up.

I had a bit of challenge learning the new GUI, but I'm sure that'll get tweaked as well. It may have been a better idea to give people the opportunity to use the default UI or the new one. Just my two cents.

I've found the movies actually look better on the Boxee then they did on the Popcorn Hour.

I look forward to the fixes, enhancements that DEVS working hard at.

What video issue are you having?

1. It cannot locate any of my shared folders. That means I have no videos locally. Or when it does, it asks for a samba password (I have it disabled across the board, even enabled it fails)
2. Videos online fail to load (adult swim, and a few others) or fail to play video and only play sound (cartoon network, and others.) This continued after an update.
The only videos that I could get to work were ones with a dedicated app (like crunchy roll) and even then video was choppy at times, but clear.
3. I put a video (avi, divx) on a thumb drive which it found and it plays without video.

Upnp issues resolved.

I blew away current MediaTomb config and started from scratch. Now all directories are available no matter which drive they're on..

In all honesty if the Boxee team can hammer out a fix for embedded subs, MKV playback, m4v play back, and wifi streaming I will be a happy camper.

Right now everything I used the beta software for is useless unless I want to reconvert my entire media library to avi with srt files.

Does anyone know if there is a reason they decided to use an external subtitle service that seems extremely buggy?

Lots of problems right now. Movement within the UI is too slow. Can't connect to Win 7 PC's to stream content. Online content is way too slow.

I am going back to WD TV Live until this mess is sorted!

Good news everybody.

Holiday Returns Policy: Items shipped by Amazon.com between November 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010, may be returned until January 31, 2011, for a full refund, subject to our other return guidelines listed below.

Now lets just wait and see if these issues are sorted out by then. When late January comes around we can burn them at the stake; until then just chill.

Except for briefly after my first factory reboot (I've done two), I get no video whatsoever, from any type of source (apps, shows from Comedy Central, CBS, etc., my attached hard drive. For a brief time after the first reboot, the video worked, but soon, it started to get choppy and then completely unwatchable. At the end, it was showing portions of the prior video I had watched on the screen while it tried to play the newly selected video, and the whole screen was frozen, though audio still worked. After powering off and on resulted in just the blank screen for video again, I did a second reboot, but I still have a blank screen for video.

So doing a factory reset (power off 10 seconds, then hold power for 8 seconds and release) fixed the problem where boxee would not play video. However, it is on the old version of the OS. Is there a way to look for an update, or force to look for an update? I want to find out if the reset fixed the problem or if it was the new OS that was at fault.

Even though my other devices could pick up everything from my MediaTomb server I decided that I would try a few things.

1. Restart server and then rebooted BBox - No dice
2. umount and remount drives - Still no dice
3. dropped all tables in MediaTomb DB, replaced current config with original, reloaded MediaTomb, then rebuild library and editted configs. - Worked after restarting Boxee.

I don't think it was the Upnp connection itself, but it seems their might be issues with external device recognition.

Ahh, I am not using mediatomb. I am just using windows file sharing and it is failing.

So I left boxee on while I went to dinner and was greeted with the update screen when I came back. Updated and the test video (avi, divx) worked fine. So I decided to test out some other videos. Tried alice in wonderland. That failed. Audio worked and video froze. Exited full screen and it fixed nothing. Trying to return to full screen failed. Attempting to play other videos that were flash based gave me the same frozen screencap from alice in wonderland (sounds like an overlay bug) but audio would be fine. Was unable to view fullscreen.

oh man, this thing is crashing alll the time. Boxee software on my mac was never this bad, even in the early Alpha..

Went to watch a south park episode (streaming), it started playing, I hit the select button to see what that would do, and it wasn't responding to ANy button input. I had to power it off.

It came back up, I decided to play a local video file off the HFS+ external drive attached. I selected the file, and it went to a black screen, wouldn't play. Again, I had to power it off.

I did update the Boxee box around 2PM MST today.

I placed the Boxee box in the corner until it decides to behave again.. back to using my Mac mini as I've happily been doing for years :/

I have been SO pumped for this to come out, I don't want to be this disappointed about it.

One huge dissapointment for me - when I try to play full length shows from CBS.com it says: "The video you have requested is not available on this device."

Most of the prime time shows I watch are on that network.. it worked fine with boxee on the PC but now I have to go without? Really irritating and I'd like to know why.

Okay, good news and bad news.
Yes there is a problem with flash. And once you get a video playing badly in flash you have to reboot boxee, otherwise ALL of your videos do this:
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/6431/img1544n.jpg
and your video will play at about 5fps. However, once you restart things work okay again as long as you don't have flash screw with you.
Thats the bad news

Good news is, if you are having upnp or samba problems (who isnt?) you can use ps3 media server to get your videos playing. Ps3 media server shows up under network when you view files on boxee. Will tide me over until boxee gets their stuff squared away.

However, WHY is there no way to disable subtitles? This worked so well on the pc version of boxee and now it seems to not even be available anywhere.

Bugs found so far:

No subtitle options: can't disable them, can't change sub files or tracks.

Watch Later: This doesn't automatically add new files in my favorite shows, as its supposed to, and if I remove anything from the list it adds duplicates of every remaining item in the list.

Samba: can't authenticate to drives attached to Airport Express without a manual source add.

File Identification: Some TV series get identified as movies and can't be manually identified at all - the only workaround is to rename all of the files.

Also, I'd like the manual mark watched/unwatched buttons back, and the choice to default to local content over web content, since the web content only really works in the states and the Boxee Box is sold in something like 32 other countries. And being able to sort files again would be nice. Those aren't bugs, but they are very annoying changes that have made 1.0 less functional than previous betas.

As a product that's available for sale, this really should have seen a bit more testing before hitting store shelves. Boxee may not be profiting from it, but I still had to pay for it, and I don't think it's too much to ask to expect a functional product.

Funny thing is, for those of us who have been using Boxee for 2 years now since the early Alphas.. it was so much better and more stable as an Alpha/Beta product.

I sent an email detailing my concerns to someone on the Boxee team who reached out to me via twitter, hopefully we'll start to see some responses to all of these issues tomorrow.

I've run into very few issues that couldn't be lived with.

All of the video formats I tried seemed to work well and started quickly on my wired network.

Performance did seem sluggish while the system did some index work. This should be expected but a bit more info about the status of the index would be helpful. After the indexing the gui performance was fine, I suspect many of the gui performance issues are related to background processes that users might not be aware of.

HDMI seems to default to very low res. Again not a huge issue but folks are getting poor picture quality out of the box. I would have expected some sort of auto-sense feature here.

MKV containers and subtitles are having big problems. Things that work on the desktop hardware/software front do not work with the BBox. Thats probably my only real complaint. Many of the shows my wife watches require subtitles. This is something hardware costing half the price pulls off with little fan fair. Its nice having lots of apps and widgets but I am looking to play the content I already have first, the content spread over the internet second. I filed a ticket for this issue.

I will be interested to see how quickly Boxee development staff get to some of the issues I've been reading about.

November 11th, 2010, 11:17 PM
So far these are my issues:

1. High bit-rate stuff plays like crap. (slow)
2. looking at movie or TV section takes for ever to load images.
3. Taking forever to scan my TV shows.
4. Unidentified files should be part of the regular media list (or at least an option for it.
5. System should use existing metadata and cover art if found.

I sort of understand the what the creators master plan for this device, but they have to understand the majority of the users have all their own data already. There is a lot of us that have spent many hundreds of hours getting things the way we like it. I would rather keep my stuff the way it is and use a hacked WDTV with MovieSheets than have to see all my hard work thrown out.

I had this issue today when I had Boxee outputting 1080i, I changed it to 480p and it worked. Also I was unable to get the wireless to work but I used the ASUS WL 330gE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320025&cm_re=ASUS_WL_330gE-_-33-320-025-_-Product which will hopefully tied me over until they can get it fixed. This argument stopped being valid the moment money exchanged hands. I don't care who you are, if you charge a couple hundred dollars for a product, it needs to at least do the things it claims it'll do. Obviously bugs are to be expected, but the fact that so many people can't watch ANY video (or even get their Box to boot) is a real problem. Whoever said "It's not Boxee Box Beta" got it dead on.

The money you paid is for a hardware platform that runs opensource software. The main difference between the boxeebox and any other network-attached settop box is that the software running on the boxeebox is being worked on constantly, new features can be added faster, and even you could possibly contribute to making it better. Other settop boxes might get two or three minor updates and a major update if you are lucky.

All this being said, they should have released the boxeebox with a STABLE firmware at the very least (if you were lucky enough to get one that was flashed in the factory, unlike me).

EDIT: for reference on what it means for software to be free, see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

I noticed that the interface moves a LOT smoother in 720p. Considering I'm one of those people that don't see a difference between 1080p and 720p, I'll just leave it like this. All my moves are 720p anyways and the size:quality ratio does not make me want to get 1080p versions.

What i find hell annoying is that the most frequent media scanning method is "Daily".... that is purely just retarded... I want at least hourly. I don't want to go and refresh manually every time I add an episode / movie to the folder

I picked up 3 units today - after figuring out how to pair the remotes (really, who reads the documentation) to stop them battling each other I have been grinding my teeth in frustration at samba.

I've got quite a bit of experience with systems.. but these samba disconnections (which happen immediately, within ~2 secs) as a timeout are driving me bonkers.

It must be a firmware issue, all 3 of the units, 2 here and one at another house connecting to another system refuse to either connect or stay connected.

Beyond that I have been able to connect and lock onto some of the shared drives, I have upgraded / reverted and upgraded the firmware as all three units have the beta one. 720p mkv play great, my daughter watched all of madagascar 2, i have it in 720p avi as well and it chugged at 5fps rendering the remote useless til I rebooted.

It has a lot of potential - what needs to be added -

Manual watched/unwatched markers.
on demand scanning, should notice i drop a file in as soon as i drop the file.
Plex / xbmc skins would be wonderful.
Local files instead of web files as the default view
View changes - any way of changing out that grid view for a more coverflow like experience?

The hardware is very nice guys. The software has some jitters - keep it open and community, right now for me samba is the biggest instability issue with it - when it works its pretty gold though.

I can't believe the amount of core functionality that is lacking or is buggy.
I am very, very disappointed that Boxee is obviously treating us as beta customers... or heck, alpha, for that matter. I'm not going to complain about the BD issues since that's been beaten to death in these forums by home theater ueber nerds ;) -- I'm sure it will be fixed by Boxee in due course. Let's look at some real issues:
1) so my BB didn't scrape everything within an hour of me having turned it on last evening (it found 70% of my 250 gig test media I threw at it through my DLINK 323 NAS) - I can't believe it couldn't find T2 (even after I renamed it T2 Judgment Day) and Escape from New York, not unknown movies, even though they followed the proper naming conventions. What I'm really upset about is that this POS won't scrape when it goes into sleep mode! I thought that if I left it on overnight it would have enough time to scrape my entire 2TB collection, but guess what, this morning... not a single extra file was scanned and imported to the movie library! Again, what the hell?

2) Subtitles - come on, Boxee. Seriously? I spent the last month Handbraking my collection into MKVs with bitmap and CC subtitles set up as soft and non-forced, and what does BB do -- it plays every movie file with subtitles (always picks the second subtitle) and I have to turn it off for each movie.

3) remote video playback - I go to fancast, fox.com, or even try to watch the whole 3 episodes of Family Guy that are offered in the "Guide" (yes, yes, I know the Hulu issue), there is no video only audio! I can't watch any network shows... what is the point of this box, then?

4) music - this needs to be addressed (aside from the same scanning/scraping problems that the movies have). Te functionality for music is... play or play not, which is circa 1994. My command line MP3 player had more functionality at that time. Why can't I text search my music collection? Why no playlist? Why can't I list by genre encoded in my ID3 tags? Why no other visualizers?

4) The UI needs to be reworked. As others have mentioned, if I hit home repeatedly, I want to get back to the HOME screen and not the access bar. also it's not very fluid when there's background processing. Give the user priority.

5) Let's see. No Netflix, no Hulu/Hulu+, ok, fine. But now, not even Vudu, which was touted weeks ago by the Boxee team as being available at launch.

What is going on here? I understand what a work in process is and how there may be bug fixes that would be fixed post-delivery with such products, but this is ridiculous. This is not even half finished and it took almost a year of delay for this product?

Avner, you have a very serious problem on your hands. It looks like you have two months to fix these problems or you'll have these products shipped back en masse to Amazon. You should be kissing Amazon's feet for having such a generous return window (Jan 31) around the holidays or people would be boxing up their Boxees today and returning them (some obviously intend to do so regardless). So far you have promised things that you could not deliver. Shameful.

So far, mine works perfectly. Thrown lots of file types at it (compressed, not compressed, iso, mkv, avi, etc) and it just works.

All online content seems to be working acceptably (although I'm getting some stuttering in some streaming content even though I'm connected via ethernet).

Aside from the number of clicks to get to local content, I'm pleased as hell.

Edit: I did have a deal where one of my samba shares 'disconnected'. Had to monkey around with it to get it back. Otherwise samba from my Windows Home Server was working perfect.

I initially had the same audio, but no video problem as others. I power cycled both BB & receiver and was able to get get both local and internet video. Shortly, one of my internet streams started doing the same as below, which bled over to my local sources as well. I am planning on a factory reset this afternoon. Good to know that a reboot should fix the problem below.

Okay, good news and bad news.
Yes there is a problem with flash. And once you get a video playing badly in flash you have to reboot boxee, otherwise ALL of your videos do this:

After spending an evening with my Boxee, I have mixed feelings. The UI is peppy and mkv playback seems to be going smoothly thus far.

I find myself missing some of the flexibility offered in the pre 1.0 versions. I want quick access to local content. The online stuff isn't that appealing to me personally. I'd like to be able to specify that the Movie and Shows buttons on the home screen takes me to local content, rather than Internet content. Also, the sort order for TV shows is newest first. I guess there isn't a way to change that?

Also, I miss being able to add favorite apps to the home screen, so they can be more quickly accessed.

Subtitles being enabled by default is no good. I can't hand this thing over to my wife as-is, and then explain to her how to navigate to the settings during playback to turn off subtitles, for every movie she plays. Hopefully they'll change the behavior to turn subtitles off by default, or allow for a global setting.

The remote is just ok. I don't expect I'll use it much since I have a Harmony. I'm hoping that once I add an IR receiver, I'll be able to program the remote to support page down, chapter skip, etc.

That happened to me, too. Factory reboot fixed it the first time. Worked okay for a while, but then same problem. Factory reboot again, however that resulted in no video at all (which fixes the problem of bleeding into local content, I guess). I currently sit here with no video.

Not sure if anyone else has seen this, but when I try to watch the Sarah Silverman Show on the Comedy Network, all it does is give me a screen saying I need silverlight to watch this video. No other videos on Comedy network do this. Anyone else seen this issue/know how to fix it?

Right now its popular , and rightfully so, to bash Boxee Box for missing feature/broken stuff. But I have to imagine blocking Sarah Silverman was on purpose, at least I hope so. Farts jokes does not a comedian make! :D

Got the BB yesterday and played around last night. Some observations:

1-the lack of music playback options needs to be addressed ASAP, playlists etc.

2-would like to be able to play all the video tracks in a folder. I have my family movies in folders organized by year and month, would like to be able to pick a folder and play all clips in that folder. Or like pictures, pick a video to play and the BB automatically plays all the rest in that folder in sequence.

3-Some of the movies I have just are not recognized and end up in the unidentified folder. Going in there and scrolling through 1000+ files (because all my home movies are in there) is a pain. Manually tryng to ID the video comes up with no results so it just cannot be added to the movie listing.

4-some of the older home movies I have are AVi's from my Sony mini 8 tapes and up until now no media player I have used has been able to play them (WDTV). BB plays (sort of) them but quality sucks and after about 10 seconds video becomes extremely choppy, download bar keeps flashing on the screen and they are pretty much unwatchable. I'm using an Acer H340 WHS with a SAMBA share, granted I tried them last night when possibly other stuff could have been processing on the BB (scraping etc) so will try again tonight. Will also try using a locally connected USB drive to see if that makes a difference. Anybody else tried this file format with any success?

5-hitting the menu remote button just moves you back one step each time, wish there was a button (or combination of buttons) you could push to get you right to the main menu screen in one go.

All in all the BB has been what I have expected UI still a little rough around the edges but I think better then my WDTV live. Have had no network issues the BB just worked right out of the box. Having familiarized myself with the Boxee PC version prior to getting the BB certainly helped to give me reasonable expectations, and i think they have been met.

I'm not bashing, I am just saying that this is what happens when I try to view that particular feed. I love my boxee box :) And when I want to shutdown my brain for the day, Sarah Silverman, Futurama and Robot Chicken help me do just that in the most efficient way possible :D

I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same issue, or has found a way to resolve it.

Yeah, tried resettings, it even had the issue before the firmware update to 1.0. Possibly just a localization issue or something (i'm in Canada). I will mess with it this weekend when I get some time.

Issue #1 - Lock-up

Under Settings, selected File Sources and then selected Unidentified Files.

BB does the spinning circle search for about 60 seconds then goes black - total lockup. Requires a hard reset. Reboots fine, but I won't be doing another search.

When I select Unidentified Files, it does the spinning circle search for a few seconds then it goes to the Boxee logo screen and then to the home page.

So far it won't play 98% of my BD ISOs and the 7 or 8 that do play has buffering issues.
The BD ISOs play with no issues on my C200, PopBoxes, Xtreamer(and when I had a couple of Dunes and an A200)

On the Positive, It has played the three high bitrate 1080P24 MKVs I made with 7.1 or 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio with no problems over my network.

Here are a couple of my observations with the new 1.0 version of the software.

Subtitles
We should be able to default these to OFF.
Local Videos
Need to return the ability to mark watched/unwatched
Need to return the ability to be able to show only unwatched
Need to return the ability to select files by genre
Need to return the ability to display local content mixed in with web content
Local Music & Photos
Need to return these to the home page
Need to return the ability to select files by genre

Removing these features is a huge issue for me. I don't understand why the Boxee developers would cripple the software in the newest release. You guys had a great working interface. I do understand the reasoning behind the new menu structure, but I do not understand why you would remove the features I mentioned above as they seem to be only database related features.

I will say that I do like the new weather app much better in the 1.0 release. And as far a not having Netflix or Hulu Plus in this release I say big deal. I would rather wait a few weeks to get them integrated into the software.

Just my 2!

I look forward to the future firmware updates.

After owning this for a day, theres a few things I would love to see changed.

1. Make the web browser more interactive/useful
Instead of scanning for videos on a webpage and automatically playing them, perhaps people want to select what they want to see. For example, try navigating Vimeo.com, its hopeless. (I know Vimeo has "couchmode" but you get the point I'm making)

2. The remote should have a trackpad instead of a D Pad (or combo)
Navigating on the browser with a D Pad is near impossible. Having a trackpad would have made more sense. However it would be difficult to use Boxee's UI with a trackpad, thats why i suggest keeping the D Pad but making the surface of it a trackpad. (think of the older gen iPods)

3. Have the ability to set subtitles to OFF by default
I can't find this setting anywhere. If it exists, someone please tell me.

4. FORCE BOXEE UPDATES
I spent an hour trying to get the thing to connect to my NAS over wifi with no success. I finally updated the boxee software and was greeted by an entirely different UI optimized for the BBox and remote. Shipping it with this update would have been smart.

I LOVE my Boxee Box so far but there is definite room for improvement. The biggest thing being the web browser. As of right now, its pretty much useless.

my issues - be forewarned i have not read this thread, just throwing my issues out there since only one other person on the avs forum has mentioned having the same problem.

in addition to the bb not playing 99% of my local files, when it does play i either get no video or choppy unwatchable video, audio is fine. i'm also having the issue of the box retaining still or stuttered video from the previous stream while playing audio from the current stream. sometimes it picks up the current video (occasionally while playing it in fast fwd), sometimes it doesn't. sometimes it freezes the box, sometimes it doesn't.

1.78:1 content showing as stretched 2.35:1 content on my tv. boxee video settings are normal or full or whatever is default. this does not happen on everything only some things. changing the video settings available while the file is playing does not fix it. tv settings have not changed between files.
http://i.imgur.com/dQUse.jpg

two identical streams (but not streaming, just destroyed video, side by side in the 16:9 screen of my tv. the background is from the same feed but a few seconds earlier, it is frozen. this will happen every 5 seconds or so then revert back to full screen but still unwatchable due to stuttering.

http://i.imgur.com/pnlZk.jpg

fwiw the majority of my files are handbrake encoded h.264 .mkv's from sd dvd sources. nothing out of the ordinary. wired connection to my router streaming from my wired to my router server. i use this same connection, cable and setup on other machines without issue.

1. Showcase / CityTV / etc. videos NOT WORKING AT ALL (works great on Boxee on my laptop).

2. TV Shows don't even go full screen automatically. When enlarged (painfully, with the cursor), picture doesn't even centers itself (big black bar on the right, no black bar on the left, big black bar at the bottom, none at top)

3. SpikeTV and some others suffer from major stuttering.

Canadian user here, we serious need a way to turn of all the crap in the movie section, not to mention the fact that we are region blocked from watching content off of indiemovies.com. Even then I rather not have my content buried and be required to go to Movies > Files in order to see my stuff. I understand Boxee is big on streaming but option are always your best bet, being able to disable entire sources or hide specific show is inarguably the better route to take here.

Just wondering if someone else has the same issue. Whenever I connect to VPN, after 1.5 min, boxee says i am offline and none of the apps work obviously, I check VPN status says disconnected and as soon as I reapply network setting, it goes online again. Same VPN settings work ok on my laptop

I can connect to a VPN endpoint. Boxee will stay connect but doesn't actually send or receive any traffic (which I can monitor on our office router.)

As with you, same VPN settings work on a laptop/workstation.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or somehow intended.

If you have multiple parts of a movie that boxee has mistakenly identified as the same film twice (happened to me a few times) if you go to "identify" it prompts you to select which of the two "sources" you would like to identify. This screen reveals all the samba authentication information for a shared drive in the form of "smb://<username>:<password>@server/address/file.avi"

I didn't have time to read through all of the pages so I apologize if someone has already stated this problem. For some reason when I play some files the video lags and gets pixelated. I cannot zero in on a certain file type since I am having issues with some .mkv and .avi files. Some are Blu-ray rips and some are DvD rips. Other mkv and avi files plays perfectly so I am very confused. All of the files are located on my desktop computer and I am accessing them over the network with Boxee. I have no issues with seeing my files over the network. Anyone else getting this problem?

Got the Box installed and watched a show, wife was thrilled. But when we sent to the standard Sony Bravia remote it was completely dead. Couldn't change input, channels, volume, etc. until we turned off the Boxee Box.

Sort of like you turn it on and you're trapped until you turn it off.

Remote is labeled SONY TV RM-YD018 [IR]

Everything else thrilled the spouse.

UPDATE: we moved the box to the farthest length of the HDMI cable. Before, up next to the TV, the Sony remote did not work (originally we thought it was just the batteries which we replaced). But moved away from the TV the Sony remote works AND the Boxee Box works (but it never had a problem.

Don't know why - but glad it all works together. Now looking forward to future updates and enhancements.

I restored to 0.9 beta. Runs perfect and has the constant monitoring of folders which is the main reason I actually got the box in the first place. Shares seem to work fine, interface is smooth on 720p... on 1080p it's a bit framed... the average person wouldn't even notice it but yea....

sure 0.9 doesn't have all the "apps" but I got this mainly for local content not for the internet crap.... did i mention when i press tv shows and movies it goes straight to my local stuff unlike 1.0? :D

Much happier

If there are no major problems I'll run this until a hack for XBMC is available. Kind of losing faith in 1.0 right now to be honest

How did you restore to .9?

1. turn off
2. Unplug the ethernet cable from your boxee box. Make sure you have wifi access to the internet
4. keep button pressed for around 7-8 seconds and release and yellow boxee logo should popup
5. Select restore settings or something then restore to factory
6. Let it go through the whole step of restoring and rebooting
7. First bootup process will want you to connect either wired or wireless... connect to your wifi
8. It should go to login screen without a mandatory update
9. Login and you are on 0.9
10. Disable Screen Saver as it will generate a popup with the update and the only way to get rid of it is by power cycling by button

Rebooting it is fine. No forced update

Others have the same issue, it seems that online videos DO NOT play with 1080i not in any other lower resolution). Although sound comes out well.
The new firmware 1.0 stopped all videos from apps to play. The previous version 0.9 played online videos, but not in overscan.

All other who have ti same problem should speak out, so that this can get addressed.

I'm on the fence as far as keeping the Boxee Box goes... Definitely a lot of potential, but at this point I think I'm better off going with a nettop and XBMC, because the bugs are quite frustrating. I've experience the red screen of death a few times, twice it needed a full restore before working. Had it scan my media folders on a WIN7 share, woke up to find the red screen once again, this time just a reboot sufficed.

It's been running okay since. I'm disappointed to see how long it takes to load the poster art for my movie collection each time I access the share. I only have about 60 HD movies across two shares, and each time I go into the FILES > MOVIE list I watch the circles spin for a long while before all of the artwork is loaded. Shouldn't this be stored locally for faster refresh? Same goes for my music shares and album/artist photos.

Even with all of the hassles of XBMC set-up, I'm leaning that way - at least until Boxee gets some of these issues handled.

You can count me in one many of the bugs listed here.

Subtitles on with no way to turn off
Locking up after playing a movie on a network share
Locking up just because
I can access d:\Videos, d:\Videos\Movies, d:\Videos\Movies\Romantic Comedy, but NOT d:\Videos\Movies\Romantic Comedy\Breakfast at Tiffany's...I get prompted for a un/pw and I don't even know which one to use.

I have guest access enabled on my WHS.

Among others...

However, I can say that once the bugs are fixed, which I assume they will be, this will be a great device! Already the experience of accessing shared content is much more pleasant and accessible than using my ps3. I may even sell it.

Just don't leave us paying customers hanging!

I am usually an early adopter.

The remote is a beautiful and efficient little package and I like it a lot, but it is totally useless to use with the lights off (not so easy to use in the lights on, either!). Needs to be back lighted.

Needs a shift key, but I guess there wasn't room. Using the caps-lock for entering one uppercase character is annoying. Also, when caps-lock IS on, pressing the alt-key to enter numbers doesn't work -- I expected to get a '1' when I was typing, instead I got '!' or "shift-1" on a normal keyboard. Perhaps this is a feature?? I'll have to check to see if the same is true for the other alt-labeled keys.

Played some more with the Boxee Box last night, and came across a rather weird "bug" - mainly, every time I turn the Boxee off (via the button on top, or by going to the power menu in the software), and turn it back on - the resolution resets. I have it set to 1080p - and it works fine, I'll turn it off then on, it'll be back to 720p. I'll switch it back to 1080p, power cycle, now it's set to NTSC...

I'm sticking with you Boxee... but can't help hoping and wishing for your new firmware update to get here, and fast.

Has anyone had a problem with BB finding files in a folder below where you specify it to monitor (ie, a sub-folder)?

I have my media source configured for my HTPC using Boxee 0.9, and all of my TV shows are in their own folder ("Chuck, Season 1," "Band of Brothers," etc) and using Boxee 0.9 I have only to designate the root folder of the shows and it finds them all.

I will say that when you add the root folder, you will not see any media files themselves. They do not show up there. There only thing that's visible are just folders. ....if that's what you mean .

Have found video playback to be very spotty from every source. Can only get audio and no video from any online source today, last night it would play but was very choppy and playback from local sources usually requires a reboot before anything will show up.

Have had several lock ups while trying to use the browser to watch movies or tv shows online (Comcast, CBS, and TVLand so far).

Have been unable to access the app library at all today.

Hooked up an external HD with a large video library on it and had no problems getting the box to see it. Watched several movies (after a reboot) and am very pleased with that aspect of the box. Hopefully the Boxee team will get the bugs worked out fairly soon.

First, to get the UI to fill the entire screen on my plasma, I went to the screen settings and had to choose the 1080/24 setting. Once I did that, I didn't need to worry about overscan or zooming to fill in any open space. Then I went to play a file.

When playing a 720p, 7GB mkv file, I noticed there was a small black bar on the top and bottom of the screen. Not quite a 2.35:1, but not 1.78:1 either. As I brought up the video adjustments while the video was playing, I began to tinker with it the overscan trying to make sure the video was covering 100% of the screen. All of a sudden, the video became very choppy and began to show some discoloring. The bottom portion of the video was green and other areas showed black and white. It didn't fix itself after exiting out of the video and loading it again.

I ended up shutting down the BB because I had to leave. I'm no developer but I'm wondering if maybe the BB software wasn't optimized to allow for these adjustments to be made while a video is playing. Just a thought.

I'm not quite sure why the video wasn't filling up the screen properly either. I guess I'm used to my Xbox 360 automatically filling up the screen when I played a 720p file without me needing to adjust it. I know this physical product is still in its infant stages and I have faith these little things will eventually be addressed.

All in all, I'm enjoying it so far for my other video files.

I can't get the boxee box to recognize my mac mini and the files on it. my htpc with boxee installed recognizes it and can stream the files. i also have a wdtv that has been able to recognize the share. any suggestions? thanks!!

Did you turn on SMB sharing and log the computer on by entering your admin password? You can find it in the system Preferences/sharing/file sharing/options

[QUOTE=darcilicious;117913]I get prompted for a username/password when accessing shares off of my WHS -- works just fine.

Maybe for windows but not on macs... my friend is in the same boat... plus a lot of other mac users. That SMB Client menu was essential

isn't there an SMB client list in the sharing pane under options?, I had to supply a password for each client before all my shares showed up. Not a BB issue.

Two updates / changes requested:

1) Make access to local content easier. The way this was in 0.9 was just about perfect and having to "dig" inside the files folder for this is just stupid.

2) Please include thumbnail / metadata storage on a SD card as an option. The fact that once the box is powered off it wipes all the downloaded thumbs is frustrating.

Wow, this thing is a steaming pile of garbage. I am having a ton of problems, just like everyone else. Luckily I was able to do a factory reset...

I'm sticking with the Beta software that shipped on this thing for the time being. The v1 software was obviously not ready to ship when the Box was. Too bad, I expected more out of Boxee and D-Link.

Missed this thread before. I've had pretty good luck w/ the Boxee box from using it all weekend. A few crashes here and there (with having to do hard resets) but worked well for the most part. I posted a fairly comprehensive review here: http://mattapps.com/2010/11/14/boxee-box-in-depth-review-a-200-powerhouse

I am on the beta software and it's still buggy.. my wife gave the boxee box one more chance tonight only to discover that 2 and a half minutes into our HDDVD rip of Chamber of Secrets the boxee resets.. gives the green boxee and bootup sound! .. She's back to the Asus O!Play again. The heartache this box is causing is making me think about spending the extra to buy a Mac Mini and put XBMC (or Boxee if they don't mess up the interface on the Mac version) on it..

Is this happening on all HDDVD rips ?What format is it? Is it over smb?

Come on folks - of course there will be a few glitches that will be fixed. If you are going to be an early adopter, you note these issues, calmly report them and enjoy that you now have ONE BOX that can display everything on your drives as well as a tremendous amount of web content. And the brilliant folks at Boxee have figured out how to make your TV behave like a computer. Remember that a lot of what your stored movies will look like will depend upon the quality of the source material, the transfer rates of your hard drives, the nature of your internet connection and your home network. There are lots of variables that Boxee has to contend with. And what about that brilliant remote with the great keyboard on the back!

I love this little black box that looks like it is melting into the shelf. Bravo Boxee people and thank you!

@RodneyLee which shows is this happening on

IT has happened to me with Austin city limits on PBS, and on two movies,

Just got the Boxee Box today. Love the design and the new UI despite what some are saying.

After a short play around with it I have come across two issues:

1) After setting up Windows File Sharing I connected with my iMac. It reports only 243MB free when in fact it is closer to 400GB free therefore making it impossible to copy files over the network. I think this has been reported already.

2) Black screen. I launched The Daily Show and clicked 'Full screen' (I read a fix for this was coming) via Comedy Network (Canadian). I was greeted with the first advertisement and first segment of The Daily Show. However when the next ad came on I could hear the audio but the screen was black. Once the ad was over I could hear Stewart's voice but I still had a black screen. Any one else experiencing something similar?

EDIT: 3) Just found another issue: Broke to an ad and it was only using a portion of the screen - the image was shifted to the right creating a large black block on the left. Returned to the show and the left portion of the screen now had video and the right was black.

Just wondering if someone else has the same issue. Whenever I connect to VPN, after 1.5 min, boxee says i am offline and none of the apps work obviously, I check VPN status says disconnected and as soon as I reapply network setting, it goes online again. Same VPN settings work ok on my laptop

Yep same issue for me. A few people have reported the same VPN Issue.

I am having a couple of problems with the Boxee box that needs to be adressed:

Incomplete Scraping of my local Library
Every once in a while Video playback of my local files stops working, hard reset required
Accessing local files is buried deep within the menu
MEdia scanning should be more than once a day
Media thumbnails take a while to load
When browsing cover art the art is refreshed when scrolling down

Ah the pleasure of doing a product test with my wife. One tip to start out with is just leave the room while SHE tests it.

With that aside on the same day as the Boxee Box came into our household we also brought in Logitechs GoogleTV to make comparisons.

1.) Logitech's keyboard, although bulkier, beats Boxee's keyboard hands down. Wife said it was the main feature for the GoogleTV. "You can't lose that thing in the cushions!"... which I proceeded to do with the Boxee remote the first time I got up and left it on the couch.

2.) Netflix was available on GoogleTV just about right out of the box. Boxee promised had some sway here, and the wife said it is a must. She had to have her Netflix.

3.) Never seeing the Boxee interface we found it way nicer then the GoogleTV interface. Something more friendlier about the frog!

4.) My wife loves Pandora! I like Pandora... but that is about it.

5.) Getting my files from my network was so simple, and I had it up and going in about 10 minutes! Not hardly an option with GoogleTV, which requires you to use MS Media Player! Yuck! And talk about limits on formats played.

6.) We tested other keyboards (I bought 3 to test) and actually decided that they were not as friendly as the Boxee remote (which we kept slipping back to as the features were not available on the keyboards we wanted). Surprising how fast my wife picked up the little remote and was getting things done with it.

7.) Last but not least, my wife had the kids find a show for them to watch. Pow! Boxee wins there too.

And the winner... Boxee Box. Wife could not get enough of it all weekend. Was the most fun we have had together in some time. Ugh. I need a life.

Hope this helps.

Dangerous Dan and his wife!

I've had my boxee box since day 1 of release and it does have its issues but being a early adopter of technolgy that should be expected.People should give the boxee team some credit and some time and I am sure that they will fix most of the issues. It does work and for the most part pretty well and for 200.00 I think you can't go wrong, honestly 200.00 is chunk change now a days, I just wish I could come on here and read and not have to sort through the complaining messages. Work with them and not against them you will get farther.

Fancast ad box tends to often stay onscreen after going to full video. Seems like the fullscreen is not redrawing correctly so you get a good sized black box sitting there. Has happened about 50% of the time.

so far all 3 shows I tried to watch, the sound cuts out completely about 2/3 the way through, if I move to another show I get sound, then it drops about same place in show or movies:mad:

I am having the same problem, did you find a fix?

OK, I'm sure I'm going to restate some of what other people have said, but here's my laundry list of bugs:

Sound cuts out about 30 minutes into watching flash videos
Cannot play any video's at 1080p, I tryed the factory reset to no avail. I don't have many HD videos yet, so 720p will work till this gets fixed, but its still frustrating.
When I first turned on the device, and after I did the factory reset, the device started up to a red screen and then did nothing. Once I searched the forums I found someone referring to this as the red screen of death, but really a red screen is SO unhelpful!
I miss the scan constantly option for external drives, it doesn't seem to be there anymore :(
If there's more I can't remember right now...

If anyone has fixes for any of these... let me know! :D

I've had audio continues video drops after unpausing a video that has been paused for a while. It has happened a lot, because I frequently will leave a video paused for an hour just because I forgot I was watching something (the dangers of having a laptop in the living room).

1. FixMe: Video identification applied to a season of shows (~10) takes far too long to apply, roughly 1min+

2. M.I.A.: We can no longer browse the menu while a video plays in the background. Fix the UI lag or whatever is preventing both video and UI browsing to occur simultaneously.

3. M.I.A.: Left-hand context menu in library.

4. FixMe: Total system lock-up 2mins into a 720p mkv. Tested again on my macbook pro (3 yrs old) which was my previous 'boxee box' without issue.

5. Gripe: I cannot type in 'strong' passwords using the remote. Had to switch to iphone to get logged in.

6. Request: Local sources need to ask for credentials automatically if first attempt is denied / not allowed. Most people know their credentials, but likely not their IP or SMB name.

7. FixMe: The full-screen failing to start is just plain unacceptable. This product should not have shipped with this defect. Making us wait a little longer would have been far better than this experience.

8. Cheers: The video playback of local files is much smoother than it was on my macbook pro.

9. Gripe: Sluggish UI all around. What changed so significantly? We had a working *nix app UI that was solid. Now we have hardware that can run *nix. What happened in between?

10: Gripe: An explanation is order from Boxee team and D-Link as to WHY the new app is so terrible compared to the old. I realize any new release has bugs, but for heavens sakes, I am a UI developer myself. I would be unemployed if we released something this buggy. What were/are the challenges? Let the community help you fix this. I mean, we wrote it in the first place.

11. Cheers: Fairly smooth auto-updates. And we know we can patch the software/firmware, unlike every other device near my TV.

12. Request: Give more granular control for advanced users. Just bury the menu option somewhere so the best-buy crowd wont find it.

13. Cheers: Beautiful hardware design. One of the best 'set-top' box designs of any media device.

Overall, it's been a pretty tough launch to swallow. I hope you BB and Dlink teams realize this is bad for everyone, especially evangelists such as myself and others on this board who have been touting Boxee (and Boxee Box) as the second coming for years. We'll stick with you, but we need some sweeping changes to happen before the holidays. Reach out to the community for assistance on these and other issues. Let's solve this together.

Months of anticipation only to have the box restart every 30 seconds.. that's if I'm lucky. Most of the time it just locks up and I have to do a hard reset. I've hooked it directly to modem bypassing router. If I leave it on the home screen for 30 seconds, or click any link, it just restarts over and over. Sometimes it goes into some sort of recovery mode all on it's own. can't connect to my network within the 30 seconds either, because that's when it just locks up instead. Ordered a Western Digital Live tv plus box for 50 bucks refurbed. Amazon is likely to get a return.

Fed up, sadly. I was really hoping this would work. After reading the posts here, it seems there is no real fix for this. THe suggestions to fix the problems I"ve already done/addressed to no avail.

Even as I type this, The boxee box has restarted itself thirteen times. (wife kept count)

Sounds like you got a bad box, not something common to all users. I've been enjoying mine for hours. You should have just contacted Amazon and gotten a replacement ...

A remote keyboard that isn't backlit is completely useless in a media room, particularly a theater with a projector.

Although I can make do with SMB, it's a nuisance to have to copy files to make them accessible. I really want nfs support.

The biggest problem is that if I pause a video, it almost always won't restart. The audio restarts, but not the video, and then the remote is non functional (but the audio keeps playing). I have to power cycle it to regain control.

5. Gripe: I cannot type in 'strong' passwords using the remote. Had to switch to iphone to get logged in.

I was having this problem until I realized the shift/alt keys act like a real keyboard rather than most small keyboards (and the onscreen keyboard for that matter --- i.e. you hold them down *while* you press the target key, rather than them being a mode shifter). I had to use the onscreen keyboard to get logged in on start up.

I think my posts sound a bit angry, but I don't really mean it that way, a little frustrated with disappointment would be closer, but I'm just trying to describe my experience and point-of-view...

I tried the Shows and Movies, and while there seems to be a lot available, it's crippled into uselessness by sticking the content in a postage stamp in a browser surrounded by a bunch of distracting ads.

1. It's a media player intended for a media room. If I wanted a postage stamp, I'd watch it on the computer screen. When content plays, it should be full screen.

2. Ads that are distracting are counter productive. I'm trying to do something, and if your ads are distracting, they're interfering and I'll use an adblocker (on my computer, hopefully someone will do a boxee addon to add that feature), or if I can't block them for some reason, I'll move the browser so they're off the screen, or if I can't get them out of the way that way, I'll go somewhere else. If I *do* notice and remember who did it, I'll actively avoid the product for getting in my way. If they want to flash and say "here I am" once at the start, fine, but since I want my screen real estate used for content, ads need a better way to be served. I would suggest something like a 5-second show of icons "this content provided by", and then after the content playing is stopped, go to a page with the icons with corresponding static ads that might get me to look further by clicking on them. A "click here to email a link to this ad" (without sending my address to anyone!) would be good to because I'm probably not going to want to be distracted by the ad while I'm in a tv watching mood, but might actually be interested in the product later, but won't remember it without help. This gives the advertisers better response, doesn't piss off their potential customers and lets viewers do what they came to do without interference.

As it is, I leave the boxee in the Files section exclusively...
