Monday here in the UK and I will not be getting one, may be when its fixed and you get a decent UI on it, Reading the forums is not going to help Boxee sell these things.

Yes this is a rant against Boxee.

New UI is UGLY and confusing!
Beta has its issues but it looks and behaves WAY BETTER!

And who wants Hulu Plus without regular Hulu?

So, right now we have: ugly & confusing UI, no Hulu, no Hulu Plus, no Netflix, no Justin.TV?!!

I don't like it at all. I've got 13 days left on my return policy. Boxee has 12 days to fix this.

To be honest, while I'm disappointed with the new organization in the UI, I don't find it to be ugly.

Also, I'm not surprised that getting Hulu Plus means no Hulu. This makes absolute sense from a business point of view. (I'm sure no Hulu Plus would mean no Hulu at all or free Hulu working now and then, which would be unacceptable for a box of this kind)

Now, missing Hulu, Netflix and Vudu at the moment is also disappointing but I guess it's ok because we were sort of aware of this beforehand (except maybe in the case of Vudu that was showed working during the launch event). There's more of a serious issue with the stuff that's unexpectedly gone, like Justin.TV, last.fm and a bunch of other app.
I think they should revise their line: "If it's on the internet, it's on the Boxee Box (if our online partners says it's ok)" I can see how getting rid of things like Justin.TV would be the price to pay to get a deal with Hulu. Now, I might be wrong, but the fact that apps have been selectively removed (the repositories are still there) suggests that we're not dealing with a techinical issue that will be fixed with a later update.

No, it doesn't. AFAIK Hulu Plus doesn't include the majority of free Hulu contents, it just adds contents. So, Hulu Plus does make sense on PC where you get Hulu free + Hulu Plus but doesn't make sense on its own, as Hulu Plus only without Hulu free part.

the fact that apps have been selectively removed (the repositories are still there) suggests that we're not dealing with a techinical issue

Not necessary true - they changed Boxee a lot and some apps could have become incompatible with 1.0 (or not working well on Boxee Box hardware) and they didn't have time to fix them. Hope so, because for me lack of Justin.TV is a deal breaker.

Having read the many posts of those that purchased Boxee Box (post launch). I am holding off on purchasing.

I like this product and I believe it has potential to be a great product. The issues appear to be software design related and ease of usability related that can be corrected given the time. I think the BB people in their haste or enthusiasm to get this product released, lost sight of the things that make this product great. I'm prepared to wait until BB has recaptured those things.

To the BB people, although sometimes painful to read, customer feedback is golden. Hopefully you can get this product back on track.

I received the Boxee Box a few days ago. Very interesting unit, but the fan noise is unbearable. Was there a defective batch, as some people claim the fan is essentially silent? I really like the unit but I can't keep it as everyone at home finds the noise too much ( and normally I am the only one that complains about fans). This fan is as loud as the PCH A200's fan. In a HT setting you don't want an air conditioner sitting under or behind the TV!

I too got a delay email from Amazon in the UK.

We regret to inform you that the following items have been delayed as we are still awaiting stock from our suppliers :

"Boxee Box by D-Link"
Estimated arrival date: December 17 2010

Does this mean that I just missed the boat with the initial stock with Amazon, or is this the date when all the stockists in the UK will have them.

If Amazon is the problem, and others in the UK have stock, then I will get it from someone else, just wondered what the UK situation is.

So when can we expect some actual news on the content for people outside of the US besides the stock standard response of "We are in talks with content partners outside the US"??

Very unusual - mine is silent - with the other minor noises in the room with the BBox, I have not yet heard the BBoxs' fan - you may want to contact where you bought it and arrange for an RMA/exchange

Why did we pay $199.00 for this? Not one part of this system works without problems, the UI is almost unusable and the documentation is non-existant.

The "free" movies that are listed are not only pathetic but when I try to watch any of them just to see how well the streaming works all I get is a message saying that this content "is not available in my area".

The television shows are a better than the movies until you look at what you can view. Is it really acceptable to have episode 5 and 13 from a season and nothing else. Not for this price it isn't.

I can't even begin to explain the frustrations with Audio. I have a lot of music on an external hard drive but the amount of time it takes for Boxee to scan anything to do with music is simply unreal. It took 25 minutes to return a list of artists. I got it start adding content it got to 207 artists out of the 2200 that I actually have (as reported by Windows Media Center which actually works) and it hasn't budged since then. If you use the icon in the upper right part of the screen it says scanning source, 5885 items found, 5885 items identified, 0 items remaining. What the hell does that mean!? That doesn't match the number of Artists, Albums or Songs on my system. The first album I tried to play showed all the right information but when it would play giving me a message "too many failures in list". Other albums played fine.

I've all but had it with this thing. It does vertually nothing that it was advertised to do. It is NOT easy to set up, it does NOT give me easy access to free content on the internet and it does NOT give me access to paided content. My XBox 360 is light years ahead of this product in every way including the ability to view Netfix. I should have stuck with that and put the $200 into something that was useful.

My 2 BB's are scheduled to arrive tomorrow along with 2 Roku Xds's. It appears that based upon the lack of Vudu, Netflix (both were SUPPOSED to be included out of the gate), and all the negative reviews on the BBB that I'll be sending them right back to amazon.

I Was led to believe that from all the media hype on the product. No where did I ever read or hear that NetFlix or Vudu would NOT be available out of the gate. EPIC FAIL.

Hey this is probably already covered somewhere, but is there a way to turn off the front light without turning off the box? It's quite bright, and I have the box in my bedroom right now. I want to leave it on overnight because I just added all my network shares and there are billions of movies, photos, and songs to scan in. Is this an option somewhere? I couldn't find it.

You can turn it to face the wall if you like. Because the remote is RF and not IF, you don't have to worry about the "front" facing you.

The new boxee.tv website contains some odd design & advertising choices.
1. The same bland grey appearance as the new 1.0 software.
2. "What the heck?" The main section of the website is now called "What the heck?" What the heck? I thought boxee was trying be taken seriously.
3. The front page of the website says explictly under the Movies section that Netflix and VUDU are offered. They are not.
4. What is "a Boxee"? The whole "a boxee" slogan seems gimmicky. I thought it was called a Boxee Box.

1. Let me see thats becasue the new 1.0 software is now the "offical" way the software looks?
2. Did you even see the Launch Event? They take things seriously but are light hearted. I guess a sense of humor is not allowed these days.
3. NetFlix and Vudu are still available on the beta software that everyone can download. They are partners and most likely will continue to be partners. NetFlix will be part of the Boxee Box within the next 6 or so weeks. There is a Vudu bug that is preventing the app from working ont he Box currently, Boxee is aware and working on fixing it.
4. I think people are having a hard time seperating here. The Boxee Box is a media player\hardware created by D Link. This D Link Box has the Boxee software on it. Boxx would like to have other hardware with the Boxee software on it as it is a software company NOT a hardware company. Many other companies chose to do both, Boxee is software only. Again, Boxee is the software that you run on the Boxee Box, PC\MAC\Linux.

I always wondered how this was going to go over as a consumer device, given that it was so flaky both in some of the apps an the (non-existent) relationship with Hulu, upon whom it relied on for a lot of its content on the PC. I guess the answer is: not so good...

The question is, how can *I* know this and Boxee and D-Link were ( and apparently still are ) oblivious?

I got my box yesterday morning from the Amazon pre-order. It took about 3 hours of troubleshooting to get the Boxee to find my files on my PC (Win 7 x64). I'd heard that Boxee and Win7 x64 don't play well together right off the bat. After a few swearing fits and a beer or two, everything is all set up.

First Impressions:

The new UI sucks. Its clunky, ugly, and tedious to navigate. Focus should be on local content, not internet content! Bring back the old menu!

The remote feels really cheap and typing is a dreadful process. The buttons have to be pressed pretty hard, making fast input almost impossible. Impossible to see the labels on the buttons (keys) without any sort of back light. I'm hoping there will be a 3rd party remote to come out at some point, as I'm am very disappointed with the remote. I would have paid $250 for a Boxee if I knew it came with a decent remote. It really is that bad. PLEASE offer some sort of "premium remote" or something. This is a major downfall for the Boxee Box. I wish I could use a Wii remote on the Boxee . . . I could go without using a keyboard if it had some sort of sensor control for navigation.

I'm impressed with the streaming of HD videos. I was a bit worried that the video would be choppy or the quality would be degraded in some way, but to my surprise, it looks perfect.

Identifying files can be a pain in the ass. I just hate when it can't identify a file, yet in the path shown on the screen, it says exactly what the file should be.
Example: X/TV Shows/Beavis and Butthead/Season 2/201.avi
Why can't Boxee take that path data to help determine what the file is? I'm sure its more complicated than that, but it seems like it could be used as a backup method.

The Boxee produces no noise whatsoever, which is nice. I also really like the "sleep" function and will hardly ever shut mine all the way down.

Most of the issues I'm having are software related (which is good, as it can be fixed) but the remote issue is not. I really hope there will be another option somewhere down the line for a better remote.

I did get another. The new one is far quieter but it is nowhere near silent. Noise is subjective. Unfortunately you can hear the fan. It is at a threshold where I can deal with it, but it really is at the limit. Many people have complained about the fan noise. Is the fan supposed to be silent? My Mac Mini ( mid 2010, 2009) and Apple TV-1G have fans but they are completely silent. I assume it has to do with the quality of the fans. What is in the BBox is not a quality fan. Still, neat device.

I can't keep trying boxes until I get one that is silent.

I agree the remote leaves a lot to be desired. I strain my eyes every time I try to see it to type. Fortunately there is a free Boxee remote app for iPhones/Ipods and I believe Droids that works great and will not make you go blind using.

I have a Boxee remote app on my HTC Evo that finds the Boxee, however the Boxee never responds. Maybe I'm doing something incorrectly?

You should call D-Link support and ask them what the error means. Then you'll find out if you need to exchange it for another one or not.
