You don't say, so I'll ask: on the Boxee Box under Settings>>Network>>Servers do you have "Windows file sharing" enabled? If not, enable it and leave the password blank.

After doing this, you may needs to power cycle Box and/or PC to get drive on the Box to show up on the network.

Yes, "windows file sharing" is enabled in my boxeebox, and I can see see the boxeebox in my network map but when I'm clicking on it to connect it gives me the error "Error Code:0x80070035, The network path was not found."

Do you have netbios enabled on the Windows 7 computer? You could also try access Boxee via IP address -- go to the Boxee Box, Settings>>Network and find the IP address of the Boxee Boxe, then in Windows Explorer enter: \\xxx.xxx.x.xxx (replacing that with the actual IP address of the Box.)

Yes netbios is enabled. I've tried connecting to boxeebox using the IP adress too but it tells me there is noting in that adress to access to :(

Not sure what's going on -- my best advice is you google "Error Code:0x80070035, The network path was not found." and see if anything makes sense for you to try in your environment.

You could also try a factory reset of the Boxee Box. http://support.boxee.tv/entries/328058-how-do-i-perform-a-factory-reset

Oh, tell us more about the USB drive that's connected to the Boxee Box -- OS/format, permissions on the top level folder(s) on the drive, etc. Is it a 3TB drive?

It's a Iomega Prestige 1TB external 2.5' hard drive, with NTFS format. As far as the permissions for folders inside the external hard drive I'm not sure what are they

So this is my scenario:
1) I'm Using Win 7 Home Premium
2) I've Uninstalled Windows Live Essential 2011
3) My BoxeeBox Have access to media in my coumputer using UPnP
4) My workgroup is "WORKGROUP" in it setuped in both my pc and BB
5) I'm computer and my boxeebox are on a wireless network
6) Windows file sharing is activated in BoxeeBox without any password
7) The Drive Attached to boxeebox is an Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive with NTFS format
8) Netbios is enabled

Here is what I want to do:
I need to access the hard drive that I attached to my BoxeeBox over my network so I can transfer my files without disconecting my hard drive from boxeebox.

Problems:
1) I can see my boxeebox in network map in one of pc only, but when I'm trying to open it, it says "Windows can't access //boxeebox"
2) When I'm trying to connect to my boxeebox in browser using webserver it will ask me for user name and password, and I've tried everything but non of them worked

Anyone can help me with this or have a clue how can I fix it

UPDATED: So I can connect using my second laptop and I need to know whats Wrong with my first laptop, because it wont show boxeebox at all.

I am one of the unlucky ones that can't get boxee box to scan network shares. I can browse them, and play everything on them, but the SMB sources (a timecapsule and a windows 7 machine) both are marked as disconnected a minute after rebooting boxee.

I can use the file browser directly, navigate to the source, and then identify every file manually to make them show up in the movie or show tab, but that's obviously a humongous waste of time for something that worked fine in old boxee betas.

I have followed every step (which seems like they should be unnecessary half the time IMO) reported here, and I've gotten absolutely no progress. The box is not useless, as I can navigate to my files manually, but it makes me wish the boxee box had old beta software, which is definitely not good.

I see the bug in the JIRA about the issue has been there for quite a while, and yet there seems to be no progress at all. Is there any hope for this?

I spent a while browsing this forum, trying to get my sh*t to work. I finally have so I thought it was only fair to post my experience.

I already had quite a few network shares set up on my PC before I even bought the Boxee Box. Before I plugged it in I made sure my media folder was shared out. I set share perms to full access for Everyone. I ignored NTFS perms assuming that I would be asked to authenticate. At this point I had Media Streaming turned off on my PC.

(I should mention I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit)

So, I plug in the Boxee using an Ethernet connection. Pretty much all my network shares show up on the device marked ‘Samba’ with the name of the share. Great, I think and I select my media folder. It prompts me for credentials which I enter carefully. Access denied. It doesn’t actually say that the password is wrong; it just denies access. I try other shares and the same thing happens. I enter the credentials more carefully. No joy. Bugger. For some odd reason I feel compelled to try this at least 15 times before deciding it's not working. Sigh.

Trawling the menus I see an item called UPnP, I click it and it shows me nothing. I go back to my PC to muck about with the network settings and I discover that you can stream media from Windows but it’s turned off. Of course! That must be the answer. I turn it on and try again. I get exactly the same error accessing the ‘Samba’ shares but interestingly when I click on UPnP I get a big Window7 Media splash screen, and I get access to all my media. Nice!

Unfortunately, when I sit down with the wife to watch a film, it pauses to buffer every 5 minutes, for at least 45 seconds. Totally unwatchable. This seems to be the case for anything in 720p or better. Double bugger.

Changing the NTFS permissions for my media folder to allow Everyone access solves the problem. Of course I only want this kind of open access for the media folder, not my whole computer; the instructions for settings these permissions are below. The important thing is, it f*&cking works now. Yesss.

First look at these network settings:

http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k581/yechielyosef/NetworkSettingsForMediaStreaming.jpg

Basically the device (Boxee) can either pull media from the PC or the PC can stream it (push it) to the device. If you want it to push to the device you have to turn on Media Streaming. You then access it through the menu (on the device) called UPnP. On my device that was totally unwatchable, but you may have better luck. The point is that you don’t have to copy these settings exactly to make the Samba share work. In fact I have turned Network Discovery back on and it still works just fine (and now I can see my PC under Network on my laptop again, huzzah) so it’s entirely possible that most of the settings on this page don’t affect the Samba share. But it’s working for me now, so I’m not changing it just to test it.

Most importantly, pulling the media from my PC using Samba plays it without buffering. I have no idea why pushing instead of pulling makes it pause to buffer so much, but I no longer care.

Instructions for setting NTFS permissions for media folder (imo this is what makes most of the difference)
(This assumes you are the owner of your media folder, or at least that you belong to a group that is the owner. If this isn’t the case, take ownership before you begin.)
• Go to your media folder
• Rt-click > Properties
• Security tab
• Advanced
• Uncheck ‘Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent’
• Click ‘Remove’ in the warning dialog
• If there are still any users/groups with permissions to the object click ‘Change permissions’ and remove them all, agreeing to continue when asked
1) Click ‘Add’ to add permissions
2) Type ‘everyone’
3) Click ‘Check Names’ and ‘OK’
4) Check Traverse folder / execute file, List folder / read data, Read attributes, Read extended attributes and (scroll down) Read permissions, see http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k581/yechielyosef/Perms.jpg
5) Click OK
• Do (1 - 5) again for the Administrators group and add Full Control. Apply everything.
• Then share out the folder (Advanced Sharing) and in the share permissions give Everyone read permission, no more.

Initially I added inbound and outbound rules to Windows Firewall for ports 137-139 inclusive because a lot of the forums advised it. I have disabled the rules and it made no difference. I am guessing these ports were never blocked for LAN traffic in the first place.

I also did this afterwards:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Services ->LanmanServer ->Parameters

Change the entry 'Size' from 1 to 3

Where:
1 = Minimize Memory Used
2 = Balance
3 = Maximize Throughput for File Sharing and Maximize Throughput for Network

I don’t know if it made any difference though.

I looked for help - my Boxee was seeing my resources, but wouldn't connect to them. Everytime I just ended up with unhelpful error messages "Connexion refused" or "Connexion timeout" or something similar.
The problem was the fact that my devices are not connected to the standard default Windows workgroup area "Workgroup" but somewhere else (for reasons I won't go into here). The fix is to get the Boxee to be part of the same workgroup as the rest of the resources, you will have to go into the settings menu, then in Network, then change the workgroup name in Servers.
That allowed me to connect to my resources.
I now have one problem when I stream mp3 files from a drive connected directly connected by USB to the wireless router, I end up with what sounds like buffering issues - the music stops every 5 or so seconds. I have no problem streaming from the drive to my other PCs, or for that matter from the PCs to the boxee, but as the USB drive is my primary resource for material I need to resolve this somehow.

Hey all,

I've searched without much joy of finding a clear answer.

I got a new Win 7 x64 computer in February and recently purchased a Boxee Box, after setting up I could see my computer under the files > network tab where it prompted me for my Windows Username / Pass, ok that works im now browsing my computer and streaming my files direct from my PC upstairs to my HDTV downstairs.

Sometimes however when I have my PC switched on and I start my Boxee Box my PC seems to have disappeared from the network. This has happened twice now, the first time I restarted both PC and Boxee Box several times and eventually the next day it was back on the list. What is causing this?

Also I put my videos folder as a source for movies where it scans the folder, identifies and so on. I've currently set it to scan this folder hourly but it doesn't seem to pick up 'new' additions to the folder nor does it recognise files have been removed, I have to manually remove the source, re-add it and re-identify unknown files and this is time consuming.

Regards,
Andy

I find when I set up a share folder through samba on my mac, it shows EVERYTHING on my mac, all files, apps, etc and makes it look a mess on the Boxee. I mainly use local content anyway so it doesn't bother me that much.

If I am connecting to the mac I use Upnp "eye connect" for mac, this works great and works with iTunes.

I tried manually entering the ip address username pass and i get a connection timed out error. so damn frustrating.

Im on win 7 x 64
but like i said i changed nothing settings wise on my computer, and everything on boxee besides network shares still works fine.. any thoughts?

I worked around this issue by adding the "Network Path" in the 'Manually enter IP/Host...' - The scanning of content isn't 100% but at least all the media I share on the folder/drives' via the network path is accessable in 'Files' on the Boxee Box

Right click the folder or drives where the media is and choose 'Properties/Sharing' to see the Network path'

hi gmd024.
i get what you're saying .. the net path is what used to show up.. and i found it , but at the risk of sounding like a tard.. how do you do a backslash? \\
my path is \\Username-HP\Users\Username\Videos
but i can't find the darn backslash..

or should it be
smb://Username-HP/Users/Username/Videos .... ?

d'oh .. doesn't want to do it..
i tried every combo i could think of
//USERNAME-HP/Users/username/Videos
smb://USERNAME-HP/Users/username/Videos
USERNAME-HP/Users/username/Videos

i get Error Connection Timed Out no matter what i do. Really sucks since I've never had a problem, and have been one sneer at all the peoples gripes about boxee box.

well.. factory restore didn't resolve it..
i have no clue.. i still get the connection time out.. when i search for my computer automatically it times out in like 2 or 3 seconds, like its not really looking.. when i try manually it looks for longer, probably 7 to 10 sec. and then times out. I ran a network troubleshoot on my comp and all's well.. and a homegroup troubleshoot. i also enabled homegroup on the boxee, which i hadn't done before and put in the homegroup password, no luck. I stream netflix and everything just fine, and my comp upstairs connects to the internet fine. It's the same router i've always used. Sh*t ..

I guess I'm giving up for today at least, get a beer in me and try and decompress.. ;)
Thanks for the help..

Been wrestling with this for days now.

This showed up for me in W7 after I wiped and reinstalled the OS a while ago

I had originally thought it was releated to me re-installing the OS but since it worked for me and many others for so long I'm wondering now if it's related to a Microsoft Windows 7 Update which are released almost every mid week

I certainly can't seem to find a fix for myself other than the 'Network Path' scenario described above

In any case Boxee does know about it and SMB issues are being looked at in Jira - hopefully in the next one or two updates the issue will be resolved

Sorry if this has been answered...if so, please point me to the post.

I have a Windows 7 x64 machine, and my Boxee Box is connected via hard wire to the LAN. Most of the time, I can go to Files - Movies or Shows and see a list of my movies and shows. Occassionally, though, I get the message that no sources have been set up, and when I check the sources the folders I have designated all show as "Disconnected".

I can still get to them by going through the network and accessing the folders directly, but it's a real hassle.

The next day everything will be fine. However, this has been happening more frequently and has now happened 3 days in a row.

Any ideas as to what might be going on?

This is getting ridiculous!

This box has been out 4+ months, and to this day, I cannot reliably connect my W2k8 R2 server box, running as a NAS/CIFS server. Both boxes are wired, not wireless! The boxee cannot reliably see it. 4 other computers do, an older DLink Media player does, even a wireless Netgear media player in my living room does, but the Boxx has only seen the drives on this server once.

If I try to force it by address, it says username/password wrong, or 'cannot connect'

It is hard to be told it is my connection fault when EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS and the Boxee is the only thing that doesn't work, in 4 MONTHS, they havn't been able to make this work ! I am a network engineer. How hard is it to connect to a CIFS Windows share people?

Help, I've been patient. This needs to be fixed, or EBAY sale is imminent!

Hey guys. I've read through this thread and read and read and read some more and I cant get my shares working anymore. I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I've had everything set up and working for the longest time (took forever to get it working that time too), and now I just cant connect.

It happened after I decided to switch from wired to wireless. I changed the network settings over and suddenly I wasn't able to connect to my shares anymore. When I plugged back in to wired and reset everything it still wouldn't work. I've been trying for the last week to get this working and I just cant get get it to connect.

My network settings are set up like this:

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/42/boxee1.jpg

And my shares are set up like this, security permissions are also set up in the same fashion.

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/2015/boxee2.jpg

When I try to connect via Samba, I get an error that says, connection timed out. When i try to add through IP address which is how i got it working last time it tells me the same thing. I've also gotten the connection refused a few times while trying different things. I've got the boxee set up as DHCP and my file box set up as static. I've opened up my UDP and TCP ports on this box and still nothing. I don't have any windows live installed on the box. I also tried assigning a static IP to my boxee box and it gave me an error that said invalid IP address.

Last night I restored to to stock to see if that would work and it still didn't connect. After I upgraded to the latest firmware, nothing again. I don't really understand what's going on. Internet on the box works and all of the apps including netflix are fine. The problem is that I mainly use this for local files and now I'm stuck and it feels like this boxee box has become pretty useless.

tl;dr My boxee doesn't connect to my shares and I feel like throwing it against the wall.

Windows 7 - "Disconnected" issue on my Boxee Box was due to not having this service enabled: TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper.

When I loaded services.msc, right clicked on TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper and changed it to Automatic, then Start it was failing to start due to dependencies.

Somewhere down the road NetBt.sys was disabled on my computer as well.

Turning it on? Start -> Type "dev" and choose Device Manager. Click tab for "View" -> Show Hidden Devices. Expand Non-Plug and Play Devices, find NETBT and right click on it and choose properties. Lastly go to the Driver tab, ensure it is set to Automatic and Start it.

This fixed the issue of my local - wired - shares being able to be browsed through "Files" but would not actually scan the source. Now it is showing them as connected and currently scanning after rebooting my Boxee Box and PC.

I just had a random smb problem for the past couple of days but seems to have settled down. I use a win 7 box as a basic file host that boxee had no issues with but suddenly started with random disconnects.
My other devices could connect to it just fine however.
I run a very basic home network on purpose and found that possibly after some windows update ipv6 had turned itself back on for my file host.
Turned off, rebooted, and haven't had a problem again since.

no matter what I do, I can see computers on my network (all Win 7) from BB but I can't access their shared folders. When I try to see the shared folders BB asks for username and password and none seems to work (whether username on the Win computer, "guest" or nothing). This is strange because all win 7 computers on the network have no problem seeing and browsing one another's shared folder without the need to enter a password.

I have different issue, I connect to my WHS share, but have to re enter password every time I restart boxee. With 12 shares that could get annoying fast. On PC version of boxee there is a setting to store password but not on the box. Real bumper

In the BBox have you used "Settings/File Sources/Add Sources" to add your WHS -- doing so and enerting the User/PW for the WHS was a one time procedure (at least for me) - and is 'Enable windows file sharing' set in 'Settings/Network/Servers - and WORKGROUP showing in SMB client

I was ready to throw my Boxee Box away through frustration at not being able to set it properly, but after reading this thread I created a new 'share' user account on my host and connected BB using this account. Works perfectly now (apart from wtv files being hit and miss if they will work).

Can I connect to NFS shares? If so, can someone point me to an instruction?

Looks like NFS will be supported in a future release (v1.2, no date announced as of yet) http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-5390

That's very good news, I spend most of my time in Linux, Fedora specifically. :D

Glad this thread was here. I was having u/p issues with getting to the actual files on my NAS (ReadyNAS Pro) from my Boxee Box, and enabling "guest" on the NAS resolved the issue. My question is--having tried to read as much of the thread as I could stomach--is this an issue that Boxee believes has been resolved? Or is it still acknowledged as an outstanding bug? I really don't feel like leaving guest access enabled on that share. I'm using the 1.1 update and my ReadyNAS is up to date as well.

Greetings,

I am having a connection problem between my Windows 7 64bit and my Boxee Box, from Boxee Box I can't see my network shares on Windows 7 SMB. However I see other shares from different machine in the same WORKGROUP. But when I add the IP manually in BB I can connect just fine.
From Windows 7 I can't go to BB media share \\BOXEEBOX by host name. However, I can go by IP only.

P.S: my other PC can connect to \\BOXEEBOX and Can see my windows 7 shares by hostname without any problem.

Mine stopped working again.

I consider myself to have patience but this is really testing it.

I've used many devices with win 7 ALL except boxee work flawlessly.

Why is the boxee continuously falling down?

Not sure what's going on -- as far as I can tell, the last time you posted on this topic was back in March??

You haven't given folks much to go on in order to help you troubleshoot...

What is it you're trying to do and what is it that happens exactly? What have you done to try and make it "work" again (e.g. reboot the PCs and/or Boxee? etc).

(Just gonna think out loud here for a minute)

Could it be that boxee is not properly talking to..or acting as..a browse master?

In workgroups, windoze uses a master browser that must be 'elected' for the workgroup. If you have one or two machines on your network running 24x7 you will likely not have too many problems.
(I'm not going to get into the details here on how it all works..)

Also..if you have a wins server, or internal dns server with properly registered IP's, then you really shouldnt have 'any problems'.

Could it be that boxee simply isnt playing nice within this scheme?
Rather than calling your content box by its hostname, use the IP. I seem to get the impression (from this forum) that using the IP yields better results.

Of course I could be a dumbazz and be completely wrong.. :p

I don't post everytime it works/doesn't work but it happens often enough.

Boxee is hard wired to win 7 64 guest account is on. Rebooted all devices. Just trying to browse files since scanning is not able to work for shows/movies.

Samba shares are where the problem lies. They work then don't. Checked firewalls on/off no difference.

I have Tversity running on the pc for ps3 streaming and the boxee will detect and allow me to file browse no problem.

perhaps ms updates cause a problem for boxee samba?

A laptop running xp can be browsed no problem.
