Hi,
I am looking to gather some infos on VPN support. I have looking around and it seems that the demo unit were able to connect to PPTP VPN is that still the case ?

If not is there a way to install or force the boxee box to connect through a VPN ?

Thanks,

There is VPN support but I could not get it to work. The BB connects to the VPN but then disconnects from the internet. Others have reported the same thing but some do seem to have it working ok for them - lucky fu***.

Is someone able to post the specification of the vpn function ?
Has someone been able to have it working ?

Thanks,

Works fine for me with StrongVPN.

I used the PPTP service from strongvpn and it works fine (US content). Confirmed with Pandora. I'm located in Canada. From my understanding Boxee Box only supports PPTP.

I am using HMA which supports PPTP, but always get disconnected when enabled. Do you mind sharing more info on your setup? Are you connecting wifi or wired? Do you leave encryption on or off?

Thanks

Maybe a dumb question. I use Open VPN on my PC. Once I get my Box tomorrow what steps would I do to use my VPN account?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Boxee is (now) aware that some users experience problem(s) with bb VPN.
We have a problem to reproduce the problem(s). At our offices and at my home, I tried several VPNs that people had trouble connecting to, and I had no problems setting them up.
My hunch is that there's some combinations of home networks that uncover the problem.
I would be glad if those of you with VPN problems (mainly the one with bb going offline once VPN is established) would send me the network details (not the vpn details) as they appear in the settings->network->network screen - ip address, netmask, default gateway and dns server.

Wish it had L2TP, but it is working for me on PPTP via StrongVPN.

Any chance on having an option to always connect? It is just another pain with the boxee box that I have to connect all the time, along with shutting off the stupid subtitles! heh.:p

I'm using a wired setup with encryption enabled. Also works with wifi on my BB. You do have to connect efrom the vpn menu everytime you turn BB on. For those who want to have one VPN account with multiple clients, you can use a VPN router. I think they're around $125 for the hardware.

Just for posterity, in case anyone else is having the same problem, I'm using witopia.net's VPN service and keep getting disconnected from the VPN after about a minute being connected.

I managed to use the Boxee Browser once to browse to whatsmyip.org to confirm that I was indeed on the VPN, before I got disconnected.

The network settings are the following:

IP: 10.0.1.104 (DHCP)
Gateway: 0.0.0.0 (wtf?)
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
DNS Server: 10.0.1.1 (Airport Extreme's IP)

The BB is connected to the net via an Apple Airport Extreme router over gigabit ethernet (no wifi).

Let me know if you need any more information, I'd be glad to try out anything if it helps resolve this issue! For the time being I've set up a proxy server on a different box on my LAN that's on the VPN, but that's only a temporary solution.

In the meantime I'll try assigning a static IP, see if that changes anything. Of note is that when I disconnect from the VPN, the default gateway returns to 10.0.1.1.

I tried assigning a static IP:

IP: 10.0.1.11
Gateway: 10.0.1.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
DNS Server: 10.0.1.1

And while I get it to stay on the VPN when going to whatsmyip.org using the Boxee Browser, I get disconnected as soon as I try to view a show (e.g. Family Guy on Adult Swim, South Park on Comedy Central).

This is unbelievably frustrating.

At least Global works... sort of.

I couldn't get an PPTP vpn to work. Overplay or a custom m0n0wall VPN.

Both the above PPTP vpns work on a number of laptops and desktops.

OpenVPN would be nice.

How does BB get the sources for the various TV shows?

Even while on the VPN (before it disconnects), or going through a proxy, and coming out of a US IP address, I still only see the Canadian sources (Global, CityTV...) for TV shows... And that's even though I've checked off the "hide sources that can't be played in my region" checkbox.

You can't tell me that Global is the only source available for shows like NCIS and Bones...

You can't tell me that Global is the only source available for shows like NCIS and Bones...

Actually, that might be the case just now. Let me go check...

Right: zero eps of Bones, and only one episode of the newer NCIS (via fancast).

Either Boxee isn't indexing correctly for the Boxee Box or these shows are not available via Boxee Box currently.

Edit: and this http://www.fancast.com/search/?s=ncis confirms that more than this is not available via fancast.

Wow, okay.

Is it possible that we in Canada actually have access to more content via the Boxee Box than you Americans do?

I can't wait for the next update. I had such high hopes for this, it's all so very disappointing. I want to help small companies, but I don't want to just throw my money away on a toy. It has to work.

You have encryption checked, correct?

Also thanks for bringing up an always connected option. It would be much appreciated! :) Continuous buffering on local content would be helpful too. I notice online stuff buffers till its done dl'ing but local only does a small segment. I could be wrong though. Since my dream of an all 5ghz seems to have been shat on by boxee, the stupid microwave likes to fsck with me.

We've added a blog entry on configuring OverPlay's VPN servers in Boxee.

http://www.overplay.net/blog/overplay-vpn-on-the-boxee-box/

PPTP works fine here, it's obviously alot more temperamental than OpenVPN or L2TP, but most people should be okay.

TeamBoxee, it'd be great if you could include the TUN kernel module in a future update.

Hopefully, it requires a driver which doesn't exist on the BoxeeBox, we could build our own but we are struggling to locate the Intel SDK which would appear to be required to do so.

The most common problem appears to be that the BoxeeBox is failing to update /etc/resolv.conf with the DNS server allocated by the PPTP VPN connection.

For some people this doesn't matter - you'll still be able to access your configured DNS server even with the VPN's IP address. Many ISPs restrict access to their DNS servers to their own IP address ranges however, and if you fall into this category, your BoxeeBox will stop being able to communicate over the internet once connected.

Obviously we have a solution, so if you're an OverPlay subscriber - open a ticket and we'll help you out.

Just a note that I'm still getting the exact same disconnection behaviour with the new firmware update and witopia.net's VPN. It hasn't been fixed.

What's more, it seems now that if I go on the VPN and then get disconnected, none of the shows will update after that. E.g. if I go to a TV show I hadn't loaded yet, I won't be able to get any episodes for it -- perhaps a DNS issue?

What exactly happens when you try to connect to the vpn? Is the connection established but after a while Boxee says it's offline? If so, could you let me know what's the "DNS Server" address you see in the Network configuration screen?

Hi shayz,

Yes, that's the basic description of the problem. Connecting to the VPN works, and I get the VPN icon in the menu bar. It stays connected for a while, as long as I don't do anything.

As soon as I try to load a TV show, the VPN disconnects after initially loading the page. I managed to browse to whatsmyip.org once and have it show the VPN's IP address, but I got disconnected pretty much immediately afterwards.

I tried getting all the relevant log by putting the BB's log level to debug, but frankly there was very little relevant information in there. Just that the VPN connected, then me browsing to a show, and then a message saying the VPN had disconnected.

When disconnected from the VPN, the DNS server is set to 10.0.1.1 -- my router's IP address as I am going over DHCP.

When connected to the VPN, the DNS server IP becomes 10.118.0.1 and the gateway goes to 0.0.0.0

I tried manually setting the DNS server to that of my VPN provider's, but it didn't help.

After I connect/get disconnected once or twice, I appear to lose the network. I can no longer load any show/movie listings, I just get the spinning circle. Nothing short of a reboot fixes this -- I've tried renewing my DHCP lease, manually setting my network configuration, connecting/disconnecting from the VPN... Interestingly, connecting to the VPN still appears to work at that point, which is what lead me to believe it's a DNS issue.

same problem here. OverPlay connection is dropped as soon as any "volume" content comes through.

The connection works fine if used on a desktop machine. I suppose it must be a problem with Boxee.

I think i found a bug with VPN. I've had this happen to me twice now, of course with debug on i have not been able to reproduce it.

But.. basically:

- Connect to VPN (strongvpn is the host)
- Play pandora for an hour or so
- stop pandora
- Disconnect VPN
- browse to my SMB share, list videos oK
- Click to play local video from SMB share

at this point the boxee o/s crashes and restarts, i'm back at the home screen. then i can browse in and play no problemo.

I got a support reply from OverPlay. They set up a special boxee host "vpn1-us-boxee.overplay.net" which seems to work better.

I have anothet question to the VPN topic please ..

is it possible to "teach" the BBox for which APP for example it should use VPN and which it could access without VPN ?

Reason is that VPN often slows down the speed a bit ...

Any ideas ?

No, VPN is all or nothing. When it's connected, it's on for everything; when it's disconnected, you're back to your local/public IP address. And you have to explicity turn on and off VPN.

Hi, did any of the Witopia uses solve there problems? If so how? as I am still getting drop outs! I'm using RC2

I know this isn't necessarily helpful, but I am not having any trouble with Witopia on RC2.

What servers are your trying to connect to?

At the moment I connected fine to London but then the connection dropped once I started iPlayer. I saw in one of your previous posted you turned off encryption? Are you also using witopia's DNS address? Anything else different you have done? thanks

I was having trouble and stopped ever before RC2 by taking out the special characters in my password. Once it was alphanumeric, it worked like a charm. I haven't changed it back to see if Boxee still has a problem with special characters.

Kevin,

I've had no problems with iPlayer and Witopia but I usually connect through Manchester instead of London. I usually get a faster connection rate through it since fewer people seem to connect to it.

Thank you that seems to have helped. Although RC2 will play iplayer video for 20 sec before freezing, then continuing only with sound but the video stuck...hhmmm...not sure if this is an RC2 issue or not.

thanks guys

I hate to revive an old thread, but I was very busy over the last while and haven't had much time to play around with the BB (which is kind of a curio/hobby for me since I watch most of my TV either OTA or through my Mac Mini).

I've noticed something interesting related to the VPN problems I'm having. I still connect to WiTopia's Atlanta server, with encryption turned on.

When connecting to the VPN and then going to an app (like Pandora, NHL GameCenter), the VPN stays connected and everything works.

If I go directly to the browser, I can go to a site like whatsmyip.org and see that I'm indeed going through the VPN, for a couple of minutes... then the VPN gets disconnected.

If I browse TV Shows and try to open one while the VPN is connected, I get almost immediately disconnected. This happens with pretty much every single US provider I've tried (The WB, Comedy Central, etc...)

Once I get disconnected from the VPN, I can no longer browse TV shows -- it seems like my network connection is completely fubar'd. I see the show listing, but clicking on one I get the spinning wheel and eventually it tells me it can't find any episodes. I have to reboot the BB to get it to work again.

I've looked through the logs and I see nothing interesting in there. Basically I just see myself browsing to a show, followed by a "Hal: VPN Disconnected" message. I can send yet another log to Boxee but I'm sure they already have dozens of examples to pull from.

I'm starting to really like the BB, the software has come a very long way since the initial 1.0 release. The lack of robust VPN support is killing it for me, though.

You can verify this by searching their issue tracker: http://jira.boxee.tv -- see if you can find this issue and if so, you can add your logs; and if not, you might want to create a new issue and include your logs.

Does anyone know when they will start supporting L2TP? I live overseas and can only connect with VPN protocol L2TP. Very frustrating!

Not sure but there are plenty of VPN providers that use PPTP -- not sure why you're restricted to L2TP?

My VPN provider (strongVPN) says it is my ISP and my ISP say it is the VPN provider... I tend to belive strongVPN as they have customer service that has in the past been awesome... And where I live I only have to choice of one ISP :(

I think the only thing to do is to keep my fingers crossed that the next update includes L2TP support. Would imagine it is not too difficult to add... ;)

Boxee?

I would believe people know how to setup the VPN, the problem with me is that it keeps dropping constantly (using StrongVPN).

I wouldn't count on it, they've things way higher on their list.
Have you tried the "usvideo DNS" service? I'm doing the trial at the moment.

is it a traffic problem for the box?

I think if you want some help with troubleshooting this you might want to include your details such as:

Which VPN service? Which of their servers have you tried?

Is Boxee wired or wireless? What router are you using? Does it have the latest firmware?

sindreengen

strongvpn. tried multiple servers. all work fine on both my mac and windows pc.
tried two different routers all up to date with firmware.
one linksys wrt54g with stock firmware and dd-wrt latest.
and a ZyXEL P2812 from my internet company.
tried booth wireless and wired. tried diffent ports on both routers.
my line is 25mb/5mb netflix works fine and dandy on my computer.

i even tried with and without encryption. no difference.

hope that answered it :)

checked the strongvpn forums and found this_ hello,
please make sure port 1723 TCP open on router for VPN connection.
If you still have any issues please contact our live support team
http://reliablehosting.com/live.html wil check that out when i get home. :)

Well you're an excellent troubleshooter! :)

I can't see anything else obvious to try except to turn on debug logging on the Boxee Box, reproduce the problem , and submit an issue to http://jira.boxee and attach the debug log files.

http://boxee.zendesk.com/entries/329278-i-ve-been-asked-by-boxee-support-to-send-debug-logs-how-do-i-do-that but instead of "click to send", save the debug file link to your computer, then when submitting the issue to jira, attach the log file.

Hello, I'm new to the Boxee Box, and love it. However, I've been unsuccessful in using any VPN service out there. I guess I've only tried two services; ibVPN and VPNtraffic.com.

None of the IP addresses from different location worked from either service.

I live in Saskatchewan with Access Communications as my ISP.

Would a Paid Proxy service work just as well as a VPN (is supposed to) when attempting to access content from other countries ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I have ibVPN and it works for me in Canada. Can you explain how you are trying to connect coz you don't need to put any IP addresses anywhere in boxeebox VPN..
