Is there any way to copy a file from a thumb drive or sd card to another usb hardrive connected to the bb. I can't get copying to work over smb, an would prefer not to disconnect multiple devices and move them to a computer just to transfer files.

Any suggestions?

In Windows explorer I can see the flash drive on the Boxee and copy or move files from the boxee to my computer. Windows xp SP3

Yes - if SMB and the shares are set up correctly it is no problem, other than the transfer speed which is slow - in your case, the files are most likely not to large bcz of the thumb drive - but if transferring from a HDD to a HDD with larger multiple files, I find it may be faster to do it directly over USB and not over the network -- this is not an issue specific to Boxee, bcz I've experienced it with a couple other networked media players

Never tried it -- but I would guess the answer is pretty much a certain 'Yes' - maybe someone else can confirm with a 100% assurance

Others would probably know better than I, but I would suspect that, as far as SD cards go, the answer would be "no" simply because:

1. The Boxee interface itself has no way to move files around (no "copy and paste" functionality)

2. I don't think there's any way to mount an SD card as an SMB share within the Boxee Box, which is the only thing that would allow you to remotely access it from an interface that DOES allow copying and pasting.

If we're talking about a USB thumb drive, I believe that CAN be mounted as an SMB share by Boxee, after which you could copy files between drives from a remote computer.

Unfortunately, I have no Boxee Box to test this out on.

Actually, if you enable sharing on the Boxee Box it shares the SD card via SMB just as it does with external hard drives so it is possible to access it over the network.

When you copy files between the SMB shares will the data come over the network to your local machine and then go back to the Boxee or will it stay local to the Boxee? My guess is the former.

Ah, I did not know that. Neat!

Heck, that card slot is something I've not tested yet myself...

Not that I'd need to share the data on it with other network PC's, but cool nonetheless.

Yep - works like a charm - I just transferred a few small files in both directions from the SD Card to a USB connected HDD- drag n drop - or copy n paste :) -- but of course it has to be done via Windows Explorer

well unfortunately that is part of my problem. I have yet to get smb set up correctly. I started a thread about my issue that didn't amount to much. But it seems the answer to No: there is no way to locally copy content from one drive to another with the boxee interface (without networked control)

Unfortunately you're correct - hopefully you'll figure out your SMB issue -- I'm sure you've double checked everything in Settings/File Sources and Settings/Network/Servers/Enable File Sharing
