View Full Version : Removeable Drive Detached/Attached messages

I have a 2TB External drive attached to my Boxee Box. The drive has it's own power. I keep getting "removable disk detached" and "removable disk attached".
When I'm watching a show playing on that drive, the show stops and I have to remove the USB cable from the Boxee Box and re-insert it before I can continue to play the show.

What could be causing this? It's getting really frustrating.

Does this drive do the same thing when connected to a computer? I had an old WD external that would do this. It was infuriating.

No it works fine when connected to my laptop. I just tried something that may have fixed it.

I renamed the drive from "Boxee Box Media" to "MyName_Media". I reconnected the drive and rebooted the Boxee Box. I'm playing back a show right now and I'm not getting the "detached/attached" messages (so far :)).

I have a similar problem. I use a 2.5" external hdd (osx journaled) without powersupply. It can be stable for hours, then suddenly it'll detach, causing playback to stop. The drive reattaches immediately by itself, and I can go back and resume from where it stopped.

The drive is stable when connected to my Mac.

Maybe the drive is to power-heavy on the boxee usb port?

I might try getting a new external hdd, but it would be nice to know more about this first, so I can get the right drive / setup. (Using a usb stick / memory card is a poor option due to file-size limitations.)

(I don't see how renaming the drive would do anything?)

I have this exact same issue with a WD 500GB Passport Essentials drive. It started doing it on my WDTV and then on the Boxeebox too now. It works quite fine when connected to my PC however. But I am suspecting there might be something up with the drive. I even ran a chkdsk and did a complete format and this continues to happen. I suspect that Windows is better at handling drive level error control than media streamers thus why it works with Windows but not on two different streamers consistently.

I think I'm just going to buy a 2TB WD Essentials. That way I get a second NAS via the Windows File Sharing on the boxeebox ( although only 10/100), and once the files are eventually uploaded I get a nice fast usb bus for my movie playback.

You guys might try using a powered USB Hub between the HDDs and the BBox to see if it may be a low power issue -- and/or try attaching the USB powered HDDs to computers on the network and share them to the BBox - maybe one or the other suggestions will help bring to light the intermittant issue(s) your having

I use a USB powered HDD and i have the same problem, i try with 1'5TB USB powered HDD as i said, 500 GB HDD (No powered) and a Pendrive of 16 GB and i have always this problem it's frustrating. So i have to share my media content by network. I am considering to use the warranty and change the Boxee box ... These guy posted the problem http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-10369 but in my case i have this problem since i bought the boxee box, two upgrades ago ...

I experienced this twice over the weekend with an externally powered USB drive... although mine didn't reconnect, I had to reboot BB to get it to attach again. I have had this before, but not for a while... I think there is another thread somewhere on the same issue.

I used to have these issues before with another device and oddly enough it was the USB cable. The shorter the better and some extra capacitors in between the two end which may help.

Try using a thicker and possibly shorter USB cable and make sure its firmly in the HDD and BBox

This problem occurred to me after the latest upgrade. Beforehand I could just watch a movie, like it should do, but after this update it detachs itself every 5-10 minutes. After 30 seconds it reattaches and after 3 buttonpushes I'm back where I left off. very very annoying. It happens with several hdd ( usb-powered or not) and all of my usb-stick drives, varieing from 2Gbto 16Gb.
Please give us an update to repair this asap!... I've got a crippled boxee box now.

Last firmware upgrade and I am still getting those annoying messages ..
What to do ?
Any1 else still having this problem ?
Have tried everything so far .. Must be a firmware issue ? Hope its not some kind of bad usb connectors used in some boxes.

Hi, I'm too have the same problem. It's really annoying.

But what i found is that the problem only exist if I attached external usb drive to the USB 2.

I dont find any issue if using the UBS 1 only.

Is this hardware/ firmware defect?

One more with the same problem. Bought an WD 1TB 'Essentials' hard drive without external power supply. My hard drive gets detached often! Really annoying and not acceptable.

I have a Drobo and a small portable WD drive. At first just the Drobo was attached, and it would disconnect/reconnect at random. Now that the WD is attached there are twice as many messages. I hope to set up a NAS eventually, but for now this is a real pain.

The USB cable may in fact have something to do with it. I replaced the one for the Drobo and the disconnect messages became about half as frequent and I was able to watch a complete movie with no dropouts. I'm going to replace the USB cable to the other drive and see if that solves it.

Perhaps Boxee is just very picky about USB cables…

I have had this problem for many months, before and after the latest firmware upgrade of the Boxee Box now in the end of 2011.
The problem happens on both USB slots and for any devises I use. i.e. I have problem with an Seagate externally powered 1 Tbyte disk, another similar 250G disk and 16, 8, 2 Gbyte USB memory pins.
If I watch video from the internet, then this pop-up just shows that the devise is disconnected, and few minutes later that it is connected.
If I watch video form a file on the USB device, the movie gets halted, and I have to physically unplug and re-plug the USB, and restart the movie again.
Today this happened several times, so I gave up the movie on the USB device. Yesterday it was no problem. I.e. the problem comes and goes.
I have done a factory restore of the Boxee Box and then upgrade to latest firmware again, but it did not help.
It seems to be a HW fault on the box. Anyone that have done a HW repair to get this problem fixed?

I am having the same problem, did the factory restore, latest firmware but still doing it. I still think it is not a HW fault as it's seems a pretty common issue and it is so annoying there's no proper fix yet. If I cannot fix it I am gonna have to return the box.

I have more or less the same problem. The first week I got my boxee it just did not connect. I had to unconnect the External HDD USB and then reconnect and Boxee then picked it up.

Then it suddenly picked it up from boot one day. It worked absolutely fine for about 5 weeks.

Then 2 days ago it has started happenning again. Absolutely infuriating. I have changed nothing and not even touched my external hard drive for about a month. It works fine on every other PC etc therefore MUST be a boxee problem.

The current firmware still seems to work well with my two USB powered hard drives(Verbatim 500GB and WD 500GB). I can connect both to the two usb ports and the Boxee Box can access them without issues. I hadn't used them with this curent firmware until this past weekend.

HDD is a 250GB and it does it with a USB stick of 16GB as well. Both are NTFS. Funny enough, if I have them both plugged in at the same time it is doing it only with one of them, and if only one's plugged in it's doing it no matter which one is it or which port. Don't know how to go about getting those logs!?

Tried the factory restore thing. No joy.

The box does a lot of funny things lately, from sudden restart to detach and never mount back. As much as I try to generate it, today it just detached it and then never mount it back. I have attached 2 logs there from today, hopefully there's something useful in there.

It sounds like the hard drive is going to sleep (power saving mode).

Most all hard drives have settings to disable this setting. Although you may have to go to the manufactures web site and download the software to access the settings.

I had a hdd attached to a dvr and the dvr would not see it when this happened, once I turned off the power saving feature it fixed the problem.

Hope this helps.

This is not the issue I have. As I said mine has been working for the previous month no problems and power saving was set to 3 hours.

Tried turning it off and it makes no difference.

There is still no connection unless I reseat the USB to the HDD. It is just madness.

I had the same issue after the lates firmware update, my boxee had been working fine with my HD drive for over 8 months until this update came up....I opened a support ticket and after several "do a reset" messages, they said that it was a hardware failure and that I should return it, seems to me that they really don't have a clue of what happened

So, I finally gave up and made my drive network available and now I use it from there now

good luck

No I don't think thery have a clue what is causing it.

I basically had to buy a NAS drive. I now stream all content directly via router. And use my HDD as a backup only.

But if the SMB ever fails like it has for others I am then well and truly shafted.

It doesn't do it only on the HDD, I have a 16GB usb flash drive and it is doing it with that too. Will do another factory reset today.

Today Ive got another first one: "removable disk detached with errors".
Also, I have done another factory restore and left the original firmware, and it did it with that to.
I am gonna have to return the box, might be the box.
