View Full Version : Playing files from FTP

I have a seedbox where I get my torrents to seed. I also have FTP access to it and I was thinking instead of me having to download the episode at home to watch it on Boxee, what if I was able to add the FTP as a share. I tried playing the file in VLC and even 720p movies work fine. They do require 400-500k/s if it's HD though but I have the bandwidth on both ends: seedbox and my connection. I did set the buffer to 20 000 ms in VLC and it could buffer let's say 1-2 times an hour which is acceptable vs having to download it on my computer etc.

Question: Will the boxee box ever be able to play files off FTP servers or is this feature "too advanced" for most users.

Thanks

I dunno about FTP, but I've seen people set up a VPN for this purpose, with limited success. Once you've established a VPN, you can simply add your remote shares as SMB shares in Boxee.

Of course, SMB isn't really intended to be used over a WAN, but if you have enough bandwidth and the latency between both ends of the VPN is low enough, it should (theoretically) work.

FTP IS possible through Boxee and it always has been. The trouble is that we need to manually edit the sources.xml file, I can do this on my PC, but not on my Boxee Box. I just purchased mine today and have yet to access root on it yet.

Once I do I will post a walk through on how to access and edit the sources.xml file.

I too use my FTP in this way. I currently have this setup and running 720p's WITHOUT buffer over the internet. I have test as far as 5 states away with out issue or buffer. I use XBMC any time I do this, but I want it working on my new toy as well.
