I turned on my boxee box today for the first time, months of anticipation was quickly turned to disgust and disappointment.

All the hardware and playback functionality lived up to the hype and I am overly pleased and thankful for such an amazing little box, however it was something slightly unexpected and very simple that was a deal breaker for me.

This is my box and I want to control the content that is on it. As I flipped through the Apps, Movies, and Shows, they all had inappropriate content on them with no way to remove them. Inappropriate is a very subjective term and it should be treated as such. I don't want somebody else deciding for me what is or is not inappropriate.

If I see an app, movie, or show that I don't want showing up on my box, give me the option to deleted it from the list. I don't want trailers, clips, or who knows what showing up on my home screen. Give me the option to disable that.

If I want to only have 3 internet apps, local shows, and local movies show up on my box, let me have that option, regardless of how that might cripple the "true functionality" of the box.

Please don't decide what I want to watch on my box for me. If this isn't addressed in some form in the very very near future this is going back to amazon.

Can you be more specific on what inappropriate content showed up ??

If it was you content you can categorize your shares.. And make sure the box doesnt scan any of that material.

If it was intent content, what was it that was inappropriate ??

Can you please list the content that you have issues with so we can look into this problem?

You do realize that in the latest Boxee update you can select to display your local content instead of online content when you press the Movies / TV shows button and you can set that when you press Apps, it will show only your favourite ones.

As for the bottom random videos that Boxee think are "Cool" yeah I don't agree with them at all .. They should make users add to that spot whatever they want.. App/TV show/movie/url shortcuts

I think the point of the original poster is that the user should be in control of what is displayed. In other words, the Boxee software shouldn't behave as if it is providing a content portal of what it wants us to see.

For the most part, I agree. I am not interested in 90% of the crap it shows me.

the answer might be to use Favorites.

the answer might be to use Favorites.

It's a little more involved than that. He wants to control EVERYTHING seen on bbox. Even on the home page, apps, shows, movies etc.

First off, I don't want people to I don't appreciate every thing you guys have done so far. The box is not only extremely functional, but also a work of art.

In terms of what is inappropriate and what is not, its not something I should post everytime I see something pop up in the "popular" shows list. For example: I don't want "unboxing porn" showing up on the shows list. I don't care what it is, I just want the option to remove it from the list. Under the movies, I don't want my young children to be flipping though the list and see horror movie covers, or scantly dressed women.

What is inappropriate to me and my family isn't necessarily inappropriate to you or the next guy.

I'm just upset because I thought the Boxee Box was about being able to watch whatever content I want whenever I want and not being forced to have to scroll through "your" content. I want control of my Boxee Box.

I also am fully aware that if somebody really wanted to, they could find inappropriate material on the Boxee Box no matter what I do, but right now I have no choice but to put it right in front of them if they want to use it at all.

I didn't realize the "display your own content when you press the movie button, etc" option was already implemented, I'll defiantly be turning that on. But its only moving the unwanted content an extra click away.

Thank you guys for your comments so far.

I am not a BB owner yet, but doesn't this box have a parental control feature?

The issue is of a subjective nature, whether there is a toggle for adult content or not, whether the boxee interface requires that suggestions be piped in or not, this is besides the point.

What some folks are requesting is full sequestering of external content, meaning, they want the box to only show exactly the content they want, period.

If they so choose to add external content, they want to be able to add it on an individual basis.

I do think its reasonable, but i also belive that it does go against the fabric of the initial intent of the box.

Again, its part of the CE experience; if you are going to pipe things to a user device, you must also allow enough control to allow the end user to clamp it down.

Yes, and it disables a lot of content.. but if you start typing on the keyboard, porn search results still come up.

So is this going to be in the realm of possibility? I don't mind waiting a few updates for this to come into action, I just need to know that you guys are considering this. To be able to disable content that I don't want would be huge for parental control. And in the consumer world, parental control is no laughing matter, people take it very seriously.

I think they should allow users to turn off all online content. The online content stinks, is buggy, glitchy, and sad. I think in a few months users like me who are just strictly using it to stream local tv and movie files will be all who is left. Might as well cater to our needs while online streamers abandon your product.

I am actually one of the few users who is happy with the product. It is playing my blueray well and streaming tv shows flawlessly. Only bug for me is the dtsma dropout which is supposed to be fixed with next update. I wish the interface was more like xbmc.

Once Netflix and Hulu Plus are available, I'm just going to be using those and my local content.

There should be a disable online content, but still be able to access the internet to pull data for your local content.

However, there should still be an option to disable partial content. I'll also be using rss feeds, pandora, and a few other apps, but I don't want the other content on my box.

*edit*

I am very very happy with the Boxee Box in general, last night I was able to throw on some video clips of my daughter when she first learned to walk, that alone was worth the entire price of the box. To be able to see that on the tv was amazing.

I tend to agree with you OP, but the makers don't.

You do realize that in the latest Boxee update you can select to display your local content instead of online content when you press the Movies / TV shows button and you can set that when you press Apps, it will show only your favourite ones.

You do realize that if you have an incomplete show locally, the box will start adding links to online sources regardless of what you have selected?

As for the bottom random videos that Boxee think are "Cool" yeah I don't agree with them at all .. They should make users add to that spot whatever they want.. App/TV show/movie/url shortcuts

Yeah, I wonder why they are there - if Boxee are using them to profile the user to determine what they are interested in.

Ideed, I should be able to control 100% what is on my box!

I only want my local content at this point and should be able to disable all the online stuff.

I then should should be able to turn on 1 online item at a time or by group whenever I feel like it.

So for example I should be able to disable all online content and allow all local content and then enable Netflix and Hulu Plus. This should of course include search too. I dont want search searhing online content at all at this point. I should be able to fully control where/what I search for.
