I want to purchase a Boxee Box which only has an HDMI output. I have a plasma screen which only has a VGA input. What cable(s) do I need to convert the Boxee HDMI output to the VGA input? Is there a single HDMI-VGA cable? Can I go HDMI to DVI to VGA? Do I need a conversion box to go HDMI to VGA (and if so, where can I find one)? Thanks!

The Boxee box will not work with a VGA connection it needs to have an HDMI to HDMI connection .

And there's no way to buy an adapter of some sort that will convert from HDMI to VGA? (we don't have an HD TV with an HDMI input)

I'm sorry, you would need HDMI for the BB to work. Best bet is to get a newer display device with HDMI, they have all come with them for 5+ yrs.

There are some really good deals out there on HDTV's esp right now. You should check newegg.com and compusa.com

There are adapters to convert HDMI to VGA but they are expensive. $150 to over $500. That money would be better spent going toward a new set since non HDMI sets are fairly old now.

And the op did not mention about a DVI input. If it doesn't have a DVI input then it is extremely old. The money should certainly be put toward a new TV if it truly only has an analog input like VGA.

The Boxee Box will work on a DVI. This is what I am using currently on a tv that is about 9-10 years old. One important thing to remember is that if you use a HDMI-to-DVI cable, you will lose audio and DVI is a video only connection so you will have to use a separate audio cable/connection.

I have indeed bought an HDMI to RCA/S-Video converter for about $60 on ebay (including shipping). It works fine with an old analog TV.

I can hook the audio in separately, not a problem. Can I connect an HDMI to DVI cable and then use a DVI to VGA cable (I already have that one from Apple). Will that work?

You cannot mix HDMI/DVI with VGA/component. The first two are digital signals, the latter are analog.

You can convert from one to another, but as said before, to do it correctly is not cheap. Beware of solutions that promise HDMI to anything other than DVI in a single cable solution. They are falsly advertized.

I have indeed bought an HDMI to RCA/S-Video converter for about $60 on ebay (including shipping). It works fine with an old analog TV.

This is an interesting option - my receiver and TV (very old!) have S-Video inputs, too. Would this be more of a sure thing than HDMI-DVI-VGA which many of the posters say won't work at all?

I have an HDMI to DVI cable to connect my BBox to my non-HDMI Plasma HD TV.
I have not been able to setup my BBox when connected this way.
What am I doing wrong?
And once I do set it up, would I use RCA cables to run audio from my BBox to my AV Reciever?

If someone is planning to buy a conversion box, this one works great with Boxee Box :

@Aurels:

Is there a special manufacturer? I don't really see a name on the box, but see them posted at several places, with pricing ranging from €50 upto €200...

Do you have experience yourself with the box that you listed? If not, anybody else has?

Super simple. You only need an adapter. The HDFury will take care of the conversion and stream protection (HDCP).

Do not buy anything that isn't fully HDCP compliant, or it's not likely to work with Boxee Box.
