View Full Version : Red Screen problem

I've got a red screen problem but it doesn't seem to be the same as the other red screen problems I've read about.

When I boot the box, I get the normal loading screen but instead of the animation, I get a red screen. After a few seconds the regular menu appears and all is well. I've tried this with 1080p and 720p and the issue is the same.

When I try and do a manual firmware upgrade, instead of the recovery menu, I get a "red screen".

This is driving me nuts. Any advice for a solution please?

Thanks

I don't have any advice, but I do have the same problem. I am connected at 1080i and have repeated the problem at 720p on my set as well.
Like SteveTWT I am unable to manually upgrade the firmware due to a red screen at the recovery screen.

Odd. Have either of you tried it on a different display to see if it does the same thing?

I tried on my computer monitor (it's the only other HDMI/DVI display I have).

Following the "Loading" screen my computer monitor would flash red very quickly and then report no connection and then go to sleep mode and not return.

Have you tried doing a factory reset (http://support.boxee.tv/entries/328058-how-do-i-perform-a-factory-reset)?

Does the computer monitor support HDCP?

According to the spec sheet my computer monitor does support HDCP - Dell 2007WFP (http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/products/snp/2007WFP_WAMonitor.pdf)

It's not actually possible to do a factory reset I'm afraid because of the red screen problem in the first place.

What's the recommendation? Shall I get a replacement? Anyone done this with Amazon UK and if so, what's the procedure?

Thanks

Ah, I thought you had said above that the menu would appear after a short time period after the red screen appears. I just assumed the same thing would occur during the factory reset procedure.

Yeah, if you can't even get that far, I'd say definitely exchange it. I think the standard procedure is to contact DLink support for a warranty replacement whereas you'd only go through Amazon if you were returning it outright. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Solved it (kind of). The problem was the HMDI switcher in my amp. When I upgraded to the new firmware, all I got was a red screen. I tried connected my HDMI cable directly to the screen and all was well. However, the new update obviously caused the problem as it worked with the older firmware (other than a short spell of red screen when the startup animation is on). Therefore the problem appears to have got worse in the latest update.

I'm having the exact same problem as you. Now all I get is a red screen when I run boxee though my AV reciever. If I go direct everything works fine. Has there been any progress on this issue?

Got my Boxee this past Friday. This weekend has just been full of frustration. On Friday night I upgraded to the latest available update through the Boxee Box, everything seemed to go fine (aside from the fact that it wouldn't ready my HFS+ formatted external USB HDD). I went to sleep while it scanned all my folders and while I copied all my media back to my reformatted NTFS HDD (hoping I would wake up and the Boxee would read it), instead I wake to find that the Boxee would only show a red screen after the loading screen.

(Side note, I connected the Boxee to my 7 yr old Toshiba rear projection HDTV via an HDMI to DVI cable that I'd been using for my Blu-ray player)

On Saturday, I bring the Boxee over to my friend's house with the latest 1.0.3.17127 update on a USB stick. Of course I plug it into his HDMI projector and it works beautifully...we update to this firmware and I go home hoping this fixes the issue, of course it doesn't. Made me sad to see the menus again only to come home and have them go back to a simple red screen instead :(

Tonight I'll bring it back over to his place and try to reset to all factory defaults. If that doesn't work, and marcel doesn't reply to my e-mails, my only option really is to return the Box to Amazon.

The only thing I can figure that may have triggered the red screen on load was changing my resolution from 1080i to 720p. My TV has never had any problems upconverting 720p to 1080i in the past (being an older RPTV it can only handle 540p or 1080i), but perhaps this is the issue. I'll also change the rez back to 1080i tonight.

I hate the color red now!

Reverted back to factory version and default settings, changed resolution to 1080i, still getting a red screen after the D-Link loading screen. E-mailed marcel on Saturday and still haven't heard back. I'm calling Amazon this afternoon to RMA this thing, I guess -- It appears I'm SOL.
