Version 1.3 of the video plugin XBMCEyetvParser[MAC only] is now available in the add-ons svn. http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-addons/

XEP (XBMCEyetvParser) is a video plug-in for XBMC/Boxee to view your Eyetv library from XBMC/Boxee's video menu with the meta data, icons and thumbnails from Eyetv without eyetvsched files or the live tv buffer.

Version 1.3 now includes TOG (Thumbnail Overlay Generator)(defaults to off)
By Nic "midgetspy" Wolfe

Read the readme file for complete installation and use instructions.

Enjoy.

cool stuff... i know how much talk there is about good eyetv support.

thanks for the update info. :)

edit:
didn't realize this was your plugin...
thank you for your hard work...
i know how excited people in the mac forum are about the prospect of integrating eyetv into boxee.

this really helps!

Maybe 2 stupid questions- What is Eyetv? What are the chances of this being integrated into boxee by default?

1. eyetv is dvr recording software for the mac:
http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/home.en.html

2. unlikely, in the near-term. there is some work being done to make xbmc a backend-agnostic frontend for the various drv softwares... but it's still a ways off. even then, it would need to be ported into boxee directly.

Many thanks! I'll experiment with it.

EDIT: Installed fine, but when I select it from the video/internet source list, it tries, then goes right back to the source list screen.

Is it necessary to escape out spaces in the path?

EDIT 2: Stranger still--Note first that the name of my main drive / is "300".
I edited default.py to have the path /Volumes/300/Users/Shared/TV Shows/EyeTV Archive aaand
it magically transforms to /Volumes/RAID/Users/Shared/TV Shows/EyeTV Archive.

WTF?

Is it necessary to escape out spaces in the path?

1) read the readme
2) there shouldn't be any spaces in the path, the source should be set to:
plugin://video/XBMCEyetvParser
3) send me your boxee.log and I'll look at whats happening for you
4) read the readme

EDIT 2: try setting XBMCEyetvParser/settings.xml and/or make sure you are using the latest version, check that the default.py has the boxee detection code in it. I know the SVN has the latest, but I'm not entirely certain about the .zip file. Maybe just grab the default.py again from the SVN (view source, and copy if you can't use svn)

Thanks Prop,

I did read the readme. No mention of avoiding spaces. Will get rid of spaces. Thanks for that tip.
I'm afraid I'm confused vs. the readme regarding your instructions. Set the source to plugin://video/XBMCEyetvParser???? The plugin shows up, the path needs to be the path to my directory, where do I set the source otherwise?
Reread the readme.

I do appreciate the help, just trying to assure you I'm not a newb about paths, settings, RTFM, just at Boxee.

Log on the way.

I changed the folder names so nothing had a space in it.

I set the path in default.py to /Volumes/300/Users/Shared/TVshows/EyeTVarchive

Same thing. When I go into boxee Plugin Settings/XBMCEyetvParser, the path reads /Volumes/RAID/Movies/EyeTV/EyeTV Archive
Note the space. Yes I restarted boxee.

So is it getting the path from somewhere besides default.py? I searched default.ph for RAID and found nothing.

I'm going to be bummed tomorrow if this is a result of my cold medicine.

Thank you for this plug-in! Using this along with Front Row plug-in FrontBoxee.frappliance, i no longer need a keyboard to switch between EyeTV and Boxee. I modified the displayed icon to fit in with the other Boxee icons.

If anyone would like to integrate it into your plugin, just replace the file "default.tbn" with this:
* Link Removed * My icon has been rolled into the official build by Prophead. :)

Prophead - feel free to integrate this icon as you see fit. Thanks again. edit- Cool! Thanks for the credit!

I may have not understood completely how Boxee works, I now have a more complete understanding of it and offer these revised recommendations:

1) get the latest (12/17/08) from the addon SVN or the zip earlier in this thread
2) read the new readme with correct instructions for boxee
3) spaces in paths are fine

Seems to work pretty well, although it crashed twice upon entering the path to the EyeTV archive for me. I also had to turn off Digital Audio or else I got horrible squelching beeping sounds.
Question for you all: when identifying a show with correct data the boxee interface gives me a prompt saying something like "Apply TITLE to all contents in folder...." and it gets truncated due to lack of line-wrap or window width. I cancelled out of it. Does that ONLY affect that single EyeTV recording with the new data (since an EyeTV recording is actually a folder with stuff inside)? Please clarify. Also, where does the boxee data get stored when you correct a video's data?

I really appreciate the work that people put in to making this work. After a couple of stops and starts I have it going, but when I play .eyetv selections, it only plays the Audio.

Do I need to download and install a codec to make it play properly? I'm on 10.5.5, MacMini, Eyetv 3.latest and boxee latest.

Thanks.

Can you play other .mpg videos? Your eyetv videos are just regular mpeg files. Which should work fine under Boxee. I would look at perian if you have that installed, it's caused many problems for me. Try this:
add your eyetv directory as a regular media source, can you play your eyetv mpgs that way? What does your debug log say when you try and play an mpg file? (~/Library/Logs/Boxee.log). When you find out what was causing your problems please post it here to help other users.

When I first installed Boxee, I tried to map to my EyeTV Archive and play the media, and I had the same problems. Audio, no video. My Eyetv Archive plays fine in VLC, but doesn't open in Quicktime.

When I browse to the .mpg I get the same thing, no video only sound.
I've attached a snippet from the Log file, though I'm not sure what to look for.

I don't have Perian installed, though if I had found that before posting here, I might have tried it. Based on your message, I'm guessing that's a bad idea.

1) the problem isn't with the plugin
2) eyetv mpg files are mpeg2 and won't play with QT unless you have the optional $20 mpeg add-on
3) mpeg2 files worked for me right out of the box on Boxee
4) maybe you should try perian, couldn't be worse then not seeing any videos
5) maybe other Boxee experts have more ideas, try posting in the help section of the forum.

Humph.

The .mpg file in the eyetv package, I've tried to play it on quicktime on 3 OSX installs in the house. All have the same result: This is movie could not be opened. This file is not a movie file."

I've installed:
MPEG2 for Quicktime
DiVX
3iVX
Perian

But when I play it in Boxee, the result is Sound, but no video. Is Boxee using Quicktime to play these files? Is eyetv using Quicktime to play these files?

I'm wondering what's left to try. Ultimately my only goal is to be able to play these recorded eyeTv shows through the Boxee interface. Why doesn't every program just use VLC to play these things. For some reason VLC never has a problem with anything.

I would guess that some combo of these three:
DiVX
3iVX
Perian
are causing problems for you. If you installed Boxee on a clean system it would do what you want to do just fine. Your codecs are harshed dude. Make sure you have the latest versions of everything. I don't use any add-on codecs.

boxee provides all it's on 'codecs'... boxee uses ffmpeg via sdl for for platform-independent media playback.

no use is made of the underlying operating system's media architecture.

I wish it were that easy... I haven't installed any of these things on my primary system, just on my laptop to see if it makes a difference.

For now, I'll just hope that someone sees this thread who has the same issues and figured out a fix for it. Eyetv is great, boxee shows promise, this coupled with Hulu and NetFlix integration (which is a little twitchy still) will make a great set-up.

XBMCEyetvParser (and XBMCEyetvScraper) now include improved support for showing the cast members in the Boxee more info dialog. In case anyone missed it, the last update fixed bugs in some Internationalization code, enabling use in countries outside the US. There is a German translation of the strings used for the settings, I would love other language translations of the 2 or 3 strings used in the settings, so if anyone can help me with that, please PM me here. The latest is in the XBMC add-on SVN.

1) read the read me (I just noticed the readme got reverted to an earlier version (ARG!), my bad....(now fixed in the SVN)
2) in that read me you'll see it says to not edit default.py, but rather set your path in settings>Application Settings>Eyetv
3) the whole point of this plugin is TO use .eyetv files, not ignore them!
4) the plugin should be set to private do not scan for Boxee

Let me know when you get this working.

Hi Prophead, thanks for the work on the plugin, but I have some network specific issues and was wondering if you could help?

I have already enabled my Eyetv Archive folder on my iMacG5 as a SMB share and can add this as a regular network source on my AppleTV. But I would really like to access this folder using the plugin instead. The only problem is that when I get to the stage where I want to tell the plugin my Archive folder it will only let me specify local folders (local to the AppleTV, that is).

Is there anyway to get the plugin to point to the network share folder, or do I have to manually mount this folder to the mnt directory on my AppleTV first and then point the plugin to it? If so, will I have to do this manually everytime I launch boxee?

Thanks in advance!

Jim.

First off, I don't have an ATV, so I don't know exactly, but I do know other users have gotten this working on ATV, search the forum here. From what I understand you have to mount your network drive as a local share, then set that local mount point as your eyetv directory. Let us know how it works out for you. I'll test this and provide a tutorial if someone sends me an ATV.

This might help:

After hours of tinkering I ended up getting XEP to work with a mounted SMB drive on an ATV running 2.3.

I found these resources helpful for my situation:
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=653
http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/NitoTV_Take_2

I installed NitoTV and did the smart install of the 10.4.9 update. This installed mount_smbfs to the ATV. I manually mounted my EyeTV Archive directory via SMB from within NitoTV. This made it "locally" accessible (I think?) from within boxee. I configured the XEP setting to point to the newly accessible directory and presto, it works.

NitoTV + 10.4.9 smart install + ATV 2.3 does not have support for mount_afp so I needed to use SMB instead of AFP.

Hi Prophead - thanks for the links!

I installed nitotv+combo update 10.4.9, and have successfully mounted a smb share on the Atv from my iMac. However, when I try to add this a local directory in the plugin, I run into problems. It seems NitoTv mounts iMacG5/Users/{Username}/Movies/EyeTV Archive/, but when I navigate to the mount point I find myself in / instead. On the terminal I have no problem drilling down directory-by-directory from / until I reach my EyeTV directory. I can then list files and directories and everything is as it should be. However, if I then go into boxee plugin settings and try to navigate to this directory it will allow me to drill down only as far as {Username} and then shows an empty directory.

Should I just give this up as a bad job? Or are there any experts out there who can give me a hand. Bearing in mind that I can manually add this directory as a smb share in network sources, and I can also mount the directory (albeit with the problem above) via NitoTV so I'm not sure why the plugin is having problems... is this an intrinsic Boxee problem that Team Boxee plans to fix in a future release?

Many Thanks!

I don't think this is a Boxee/XEP problem. I think this is an issue with hacking your ATV which would be better addressed in other forums. Perhaps it's some kind of permissions issue. What is the mount point for your your share? Do you have permission to read that directory? Once again I don't have an ATV, so I can't really help you. Best of luck.

JimWiley

Thanks prophead - it was a permissions issue on AppleTV.

SSH into AppleTV as normal, then:

mkdir /Volumes/EyeTV\ Archive
chown frontrow:frontrow /Volumes/EyeTv\ Archive

then:

mount_smbfs //{username}:{password}@IMACG5/EyeTV\ Archive /Volumes/EyeTV\ Archive

fire up Boxee and add /Volumes/EyeTV Archive/ as a local source in plugin settings and bob's your uncle. Ideal!

Something so simple, makes you feel like a right idiot when you finally see it!

Hope this saves someone else all the pain I went through...

Regards,

Jim.

So before I go editing files, can somebody please help me figure out where my problem might be? I'm running 10.5.6 on a mini with EyeTV 3.1 (4513) and Boxee 0.9.6.4578

My EyeTV archive is at
/Users/jas/Movies/EyeTV/EyeTV Archive

The first thing I noticed is that the plugin folder must be the named as it was originally, XBMCEyetvParser, not EyetvTOG. Second I would read the readme file with the application. If you're still having problems give me a shout back and we'll get you working.

Hi prophead

I'm running boxee-0.9.8.4880 on Mac Mini.

After installation as ReadMe1.3rtf instructed, I don't see EyeTV icon in either Settings nor Video->Internet

I edited default.py for usual stuff such as:

path = ...

tog = 1

FFMPEG_PATH = ...

please help.

1) Make sure plugin is installed in /Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/plugins/video/XBMCEyetvParser

2) It sounds like you've tried to install the plugin as a regular source, it either must be prefixed with a plugin://[location of plugin] or preferably installed as an application (settings->applications)

3) Try and get it working without TOG at first, then enable TOG later.

4) Let me know how it goes, we will get you working.

Hi prophead

thanks for replying.

any way

1/ yes. it's at: /Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/plugins/video/
the directory name is: XBMCEyetvParser

2/ I installed it via Settings -> Applications . Because Settings-> Add Source won't have Application directory like readme stated.

3/ turn off tog =0 still no luck

got this from boxee.log:

17:08:13 T:2688378656 M: 73392128 ERROR: In CGUIWindowBoxeeMediaSourceList::LoadAllShares - Failed to handle source [/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/plugins/video/XBMCEyetvParser/] because of an unknown selectedSourceType [1701409391]

There is a bug in the way Boxee generates plugin paths

Open your sources.xml file
/Users/<UserName>/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/UserData/profiles/<YourProfile>/sources.xml

Replace
<path>/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/plugins/video/XBMCEyetvParser/</path>

With
<path>plugin://video/XBMCEyetvParser/</path>

Thanks for the suggestion. It works. :)

Appears to crash Boxee in the latest alpha. Can anyone else confirm this?

Running Boxee 0.9.10.5534 (Build date Mar 24 2009) on a Mac Mini OS 10.4

I copied the XBMCEyetvParser directory to
/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/plugins/video

After launching Boxee, "EyeTV" with thumbnail appeared in the AppBox but, after selecting it for installation, Boxee returned a "Couldn't install" error.

Edited sources.xml as follows:
<source>
<name>EyeTV</name>
<path>plugin://video/XBMCEyetvParser</path>
</source>

Quit and relaunched Boxee.

EyeTV now appears in AppBox and, upon selecting it, I can pick where my EyeTV Archive folder is.

However, I don't see how to get to the shows themselves -- no EyeTV icon has appeared in any of the Video submenus.

What do I do next?
