I just installed Boxee on Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, and it does not load successfully. Is it supported or even expected to work, and if yes, then is there a trick of which I'm not aware?

I tried the properties to Run as Administrator, and to force WinXP compatibility modes.

It immediately goes to the error dialog, "Boxee has stopped working" - check online for a solution, or Close the program. Problem event name: APPCRASH

Have you upgraded your gfx drivers lately? If not, give it a try.

It's having no trouble with Vista Aero or MCE video playback.
I believe I have the latest drivers (from Dell) for the Optiplex 755 on-board video -- "Q35 Express Chipset" in device manager. Could be the on-board video isn't compatible if it does not meet requirements.

Didn't Agentlame spell it out? see post -http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=17643&postcount=3
it's your video card.

you need a video card that supports opengl 1.3 or later.

System: Acer Aspire AMD Phenom 2.2 Ghz
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 Beta
RAM: 4GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8200
Monitor: Samsung 32" LCD via HDMI

The program installation went without a hitch and so far no major problems. When Boxee starts up I see a DOS box for a few seconds but it goes away shortly. The video menu locks the whole program when indexing movies on my 1TB external hardrive. I have over 800 movies in Divx format in this drive. The process to add shares to the search function it's a hit and miss with the keyboard or mouse. I currently control everything with a RocketFish Bluetooth keyboard an mouse combo. Overall I am very pleased with the functionality of this release and look forward to future releases.

4578 launches fine for me on Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP1. I'm using an ATI X1950 512MB. Netflix? Now that's another thing. :)

Does Boxee for Windows have 64bit version? If not, maybe running a 32bit Boxee in a 64bit environment makes it more unstable? But msitarzewksie is running it well so there might be other reasons.
