Hello, this is my first post and wanted ask what everyone thought of there Box. Iv'e been on the net the last couple days trying to find out what I could about Boxee, Mixed reviews. I have a WD Live Hub and Google TV, at first I almost got Boxee, but held off. My Hub hasn't had major updates and googles media playback is kinda weak, but they do have there strenghts, anyway I'm really considering getting one, would anybody recomend one? Iv'e heard some of the problems with the custom thumbnails and I'm a custom thumbnails kind of person, Is there frequent updates? can I transfer media to a hard drive I have connected over the network? I like to use BD and DVD iso does It have menu playback? What are maybe some strenghts and weaknesses with the Boxee? Any comments would help thanks.

Why don't you try one for yourself - get one from Amazon (30 day return policy) or buy.com (45 day return policy) - with either reseller you get a no questions asked return policy - the Box is a few dollars less at Amazon, but you get 15 more days at buy.com to test it

I've never used a WD Box, mainly because of the extra features offered on the BBox - and I owned a Revue/GTV literally for only a few hours before deciding to RMA it

I own two BBoxes and both are pretty much issue free - the 2 or 3 small issues they have are easy to live with and Boxee will most likely resolve them in the next firmware up due around April - which by the way will be somewhere around the 6th or 7th release (not sure, I lost track) since it first shipped about 4 months ago - unprecedented by any other media box in such a short period of time - and the Boxee team members occasionally chime in on this forum to offer advise and update info once in a while - but the forum is most community supported, very helpful and informative

You can transfer media to/from over the network with the BBox, but like most other media players I've used it will be slow

BD ISOs are supported but because of licensing and costs, like most other media players the BBox doesn't not support menus -- menus 'are' supported for DVD ISOs

This is one of the most complete media players sites that rank and explain them, and in a very short time since release, the BBOx has made it the sites top ranking, in a field of well over 300 boxes... http://www.iboum.com/

Boxee offers Netflix and Vudu, with Hulu Plus in the works, but no time frame is given for it's release - And I'm sure Amazon VOD has their eye on the BBox and will offer an app for it sometime in the future

Try one, you get a no risk return policy at either of the two resellers mentioned, and I'm sure at a few others also

Excellent post Gmd024. Not much else to add other than the Box is now available at most Best Buy stores. So if you don't want the hassle of mail ordering and sending back, buying one at Best Buy is a good option too.

While I've never had the WD boxes, I currently do have a Google TV device(at this point I wish I had RMA'd it lol), a PS3 and a Roku. The PS3 is just starting to get into the app area(they do have some major ones) but is lacking in local streaming capabilties.

Same goes for the Roku. The Roku does offer a couple more major channels right now(Hulu+ and Amazon VOD), but IMO many of their other channels are junk. I really don't like Roku's interface either. It's very dated. With that said, their local streaming is seriously lacking.

Google TV definintely has promise, but promise is one thing, delivering is another. Currently they haven't delivered anything at all really. Ever since the networks stonewalled them, Google seems very disinterested in the thing. At some point they may finally deliver, but they've failed miserably to date.

IMO, the Boxee Box is currently the best combination of local streaming + internet streaming. Their local streaming(minus their bugs) is outstanding and they have a LOT of apps now for internet streaming. I was very pleasantly surprised when I got my box as to how many they really had. I had no idea they had that many. Once they get Hulu+ and hopefully Amazon VOD, they will be hard to beat.

The PS3 is just starting to get into the app area(they do have some major ones) but is lacking in streaming capabilties. Care to elaborate? Have used PS3 to stream Vudu HDX movies, 1080p Netflix, and Hulu+ (720p) without problem... curious as I don't hang out on any PS3 forums as such.

I should say local streaming. Sorry for the confusion(I edited my post to add that).

Their app selection is getting better as they have the major ones(except Amazon), they just haven't delved into the minor ones yet.

Ah, right, I would never use the PS3 for local stuff :)

Thanks, I think I will go with Best Buy and try It out so for some reason I don't like It I can return It easier, But looks good. The Hub lacks the TV data which looks like the Boxee does have, thats good because I have alot of shows.

hope you enjoy your boxee purchase but i will probably sell mine i have over 200 films on my nas mixture of dvd and blu rays ripped from my personal collection. they play perfectly but when you have an a - z listing like i do you cant just jump to the film you want so if you want to watch a film begining with T you have to scroll through every film until you get to T you cant just select T on the keyboard and it jumps to that Letter

so i will go back to a media center pc i think unless this has a workaround ?

I thought you could just move over and select T in the letter listing on the right, no(I don't have a collection big enough to want to use it so not sure)?

Actually it does work on the Box. I tried it last night. When the list of movie posters comes up, move to the letter listing on the right and then move down to the letter you want and hit the select button. Took me to the first movie with that letter.

i dont mean using the movie tab on the boxee main menu, i no it works there i mean if you got to the files option and then i point boxee to my nas box in my case a netgear stora then upnp then it shows all my movies on my nas (about 200) so it brings up my list of films in alphabetical order then you can't choose to jump, straight to a particluar film you have to scroll down through a complete a to z listing for example if you wanted to say watch "The Hangover"

its frustrating

Make sure that your movie files are named properly (http://support.boxee.tv/entries/325263-how-should-i-name-my-files-so-they-will-show-up-in-the-movies-or-tv-shows-library) and then add the top level folder of your movie files to Boxee's media sources (http://boxee.zendesk.com/entries/325728-adding-media-sources).

ok thank you i will give that a go :)

If you are missing some movies after this finishes, it may not have ID'd the movie correctly so go into the file list and select the movie and select identify and it will allow you to choose from a list of what the movie is supposed to be.

On the Boxee Box there is a vertical list of letters just to the right of the movie thumbnails that you can use to quickly jump to the first movie of that letter.

The issue is that he hadn't set up Boxee to scan/identify his movie files so his Movies screen was empty; he's been using the Files view instead...

So you're on the Movies screen and see what exactly? A blank screen? A screen with blank movie posters?

Do the file names for your mkv movies files follow the naming standard I linked to previously for you? Can you post a couple of example file names that you think Boxee should be identifying?

So on the Boxee Beta and I believe its still on BBox on the last window with the "Play" button you can manually indentify a video by hitting the right most button "Identify video" when you click on it you will see the search terms Boxee is using to look for you movies on the IMDB database. Most likely there is something odd in the titling that is throwing the movie scraper off. Edit the name in the search box to the corrrect name of the movie and see if it pulls up the right film. Pick the right film and it will add your film's artwork to the Movies menu screen.

You won't want to manually identify every single movie this way but you should manually identify one to see how it works so you see at least one video in your Movies folder. I'm betting seeing how Boxee is misreading your file name in guessing what the movie's name is will make a little light bulb go off in your head about what is wrong with your file names. You might want reread that link from darcilious about naming conventions now that you've seen what Boxee is looking up the movie file with. For Boxee, including the year the film was made, really, really improves the scrapers chances of correctly identifying your video.

For PC's there are several utilities for bulk renaming your files so they scrape correctly.

hi there,

yes i have made sure they its in film.mkv format for e.g Zombieland.mkv etc etc

so as an example if i turn boxee on and you get to the main menu you have a movies tab at the top right?
so i click that and none of my movies are in there just the normal online movie stuff

so next i try clicking on files then movies from there and it says

there are no local movie sources yet click ok then it shows my shares on my nas box

2 folders one called Downloaded films, second one called MKV Films

i go in and everything is there and they all play perfectly so no complaints there its just that none have pictures and i cant jump to a film i.e Zombieland for e.g by pressing Z

oh and on my file sources for my films it says 206 files found 206 files unidentified?

hope this helps and thanks for trying to help me!

How long have you let Boxee idle after turning it on? It won't scan/identify while it's actively streaming content.

Zombieland.mkv should work but you could also try:

Zombieland (2009).mkv

How are your other multi-worded title movie files named?

padmeister
March 21st, 2011, 02:47 PM
well its currently idling and has been since i got home from work at 5pm and its still not updating anything with pictures.

everything is in the name of movie.mkv format.

i have told it to re scan all folders and its done all that and still nothing i think i am ready to give up

If you want help, please post the exact file names. Some multi-worded titles would be good.

Worst case, you might want to try clearing the media database (settings>>system somewhere I think) and forcing Boxee to restart the process. But it would be best to post the file names first.
