View Full Version : mlb.tv performance on boxee box

Hello-

I'm pretty excited to have mlb.tv on my new boxee box, but I must say the performance is pretty dissapointing. The video stutters, stops, skips ahead, and loses audio all the time. When watching games from the start if the video freezes (which is often does) there's no way to resume from the last point.

What it the future for this app? Is it continually being improved? Does anybody else have this performance issue? Any tips on improving it?

Thank you.

The fast forwarding really needs to be fixed on MLB.tv for the Boxee Box. It works fine on Boxee in both Ubuntu and Windows but on the Boxee Box it skips 10-15 minutes forward and then hangs or goes into slow-mo. The app wouls also be better with a jump to inning feature or support for MILB.tv (minor league). With the fast forwarding so broken it is getting close to unusable.

I don't know the timeline but it seems like there's an updated version of this app coming out: http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?p=173971#post173971

Ok, I marked it acceptable but I'd like to mark it higher. Not flawless, just higher than acceptable.

I'm currently watching the Padres and Cardinals and the video is pretty darn good. I've had no issues with drops or anything. It's been great. Infact it has been BETTER than my PS3. I was watching the same game on the PS3 and when the action sped up on screen, the picture would turn to cr@p until the action settled down. The audio also had very subtle drops in it, like hiccups. I have seen NONE of that on the Boxee. When the actions speeds up, the picture stays stable and clear and sharp and the audio is flawless.

BTW, I now DO see the difference in the app... they updated it so MLB can stream COMMERCIAL SLIDES between innings... geez. The PS3 does it too so it's not just boxee.

One note, make sure if you are using the 1080p/24 display setting that you also check the match frame rate option right below it. Otherwise it will stutter.

Guys it turns out this is an issue on MLB's side according to their latest blog post comment by Rob. Apparently Roku and a couple other STB's are experiencing the same issue as well. We had this same exact situation last year. I would say that MLB.TV will have this fixed within a few weeks (judging by their speed in the past).

From Rob:
There were some issues with a couple Opening Day streams, much like we had last year. The folks at MLB.tv are working hard to get these discontinuities resolved and we should expect more consistent performance over the course of the next couple weeks.

I think they upped the bitrate to 4.5mb/s this year too. I have definately noticed a difference between this year and last year in terms of quality. In all honesty, I would like commercials. HOW CRAZY IS THAT!?!?! The reason is because unlike with Hulu, you cant simply remove the commercials. I always hated staring at a circling "We'll be right back message" it made me uncomfortable. Just sitting there with nothing on the screen and no sound is kinda weird. But maybe I am in the minority here.

Yeah, i dont know what it is but compared to the PS3, the FF/RW is awful. But the last blog post the nex update is going to bring a big fix on that front so lets hope it fixes that too.

I cant even watch a game. The feed just buffers, then plays for a couple seconds, fast fowards itself, pauses, audio is out of sync. Its completly unwatchable.

my boxee box is wired to my router, every other app works great. Anything i can do on my end?

Really thinking about doing this.
question:How can I get around the local black out? do they just use the billing address from the cc you use to pay? could I have a family member for example sign up for me?

dang. can any else confirm this?
Vpn? what service do you use? I'd hate to get it just for this app but if there are other uses maybe.
nevermind found it here:
Note MLB.com live game blackouts are determined in part by IP address. MLB.com At Bat live game blackouts are determined using one or more reference points, such as GPS and software within your mobile device. The Zip Code search is offered for general reference only.

Yes, 100% confirmed. However if they have a hard time finding your location via the IP address they will use credit card info. That is at least on the web interface.

Last year I used Strong VPN. i liked it but it was really hard to manage. This year I am using ibvpn.com and i so far like it. They dont have a lot of servers, but it could be enough.

I'm having the same issues. It's a total nightmare so far, particularly since I bought the Boxee Box specifically to watch MLB.TV. This is not acceptable!

Any advice, other than restarting from factory settings (which I've already tried) would be greatly appreciated!

At least I'm not the only one having issues. I'm trying to watch the Sox game right now and it was working great and the when it cam back from commercial in the 2nd inning everything slowed down and I had to stare at George Bush's face until I just backed out and restarted it. By the time I got the game back on there were already two outs. This is aggravating.

Same here, bought the boxee mainly for mlb. Disappointing to say the least.

mlb app works fine on my gf's samsung tv at her house, so im not sure this is entirely an mlb problem instead of a boxee problem? on the other hand, spring training did work fine on the boxee. who knows, i just hope it gets fixed soon.

Agreed. This is absolutely unusable like this. Not cool. Also, when it works, which is not often, mine is playing Mono AAC. Pretty lame. Where is the best place to voice our dissatisfaction here?

This app and/or service needs a serious update. Im happy with hd feeds when working however it mostly locks on lower quality pixelated stream multiple times per inning. My ISP service has 15 mbps downstream. It appears mlb servers are slammed during prime time hours however consistent HD archive stream can be had viewing after midnight. Unfortunately you have to watch complete game in it's entirety without ff option or else gets stuck on paused or slow mo frame. Does apple tv have this issue? Jump to inning is also desparately needed.

Today is the first time I've run into significant problems. The Meta game is freezing every five minutes and I can't do anything other than exit the feed and re-load it - which is inconvenient, to say the least. And there it goes again...

Mine has been fine until today, been trying to watch Yankees v Tigers, away feed doesn't work at all, says it can't find the stream. Home feed keeps pausing all the time. Sigh.

Switched to iPad and both home and away feed working perfectly. Spoke to a friend of mine who is watching same game on PS3, working perfectly, so this is a Boxee issue!

I was watching Braves V Nats on opening day. The video looked fantastic in spite of my selecting the lower video grade. But it would only run for about one batter before stopping and needing to load for some time. I missed most of the action.

I switched to watching it online through Safari and had no issues. The video quality was often reduced, but it ran smoothly.

It looks to me like the Boxee app is not downgrading video quality when necessary. It's going for HD all the time. Can't watch baseball this way!

I got the boxee primarily for the MLB, and I'd vote somewhere between acceptable and terrible.

If all you want to do is watch the live game, and can tolerate the occasional random speed changes and audio loss - it works OK.

But the FFWD or other controls of an archived game are surprisingly crude. As another Red Sox fan in California, I was hoping to try to time-shift the games but I don't see how I can do it with the controls the way they are. And I'm not sure that I'll be able to convince my technophobe, Yankee-fan wife that this is a viable alternative to the cable MLB EI package we had in the past.

Hopefully some improvements are imminent, and include some of the other features like the condensed game, etc. that are available on an iPhone app.

I agree but according to Avner and Rob the next update will hopefully fix the ffwd/rw options. I certianly hope so because the PS3 app does a fantastic job at it.

Its an mlb.tv issue

How is it an MLB.TV issue, when I get the same stuttering-fastforward-stop-fastforward on BoxeeBox, whereas mlb.tv through my laptop's browser, or my iPad, loads immediately.
Beyond that, the Boxee Box MLB.TV app is very inconsistent. It had worked well for me in first few days of the season, to the point where I put away my mini/Plex setup and turned to Boxee Box as my primary media center. Guess it's time to get the mini back out.

Because its MLB that did the main development. They have say over what happens. You also have to think that a stream is going to behave differently on different hardware. For instance you cant simply take a line of code and apply it to the PS3 the same way you can to the Boxee or Roku or Apple TV. Every device is different. All they did (including the boxee team) was apply the new adaptive bitrate to the stream (So it seems). Doesnt look like they did much else. Boxee is probably not high on MLB.TV's list. Roku is said to be experiencing issues as well, but Rob has stated that they have talked to MLB and they are in the process of fixing it.

I had posted previously that I was very unhappy with my Boxee Box MLB.TV experience after the first two days of the season. However, I've seen a major improvement since then, and I have happily been enjoying some truly wonderful live baseball action thanks to my now trusty Boxee. I hope everyone else has seen some improvement, as well!

I came in tonight to see what folks were seeing...the Giants/Pads seems to have worked fine (only tested top of two feeds) but the Red Sox game was not watchable. The box hung while filling the buffer, and though you could start the video, it quickly froze. There is a thread on the MLB forum about tonight's issues, but no clear info other than others are seeing issues.

On my Boxee box, getting a 'media source or file is unaccessible' for the Brewers / Braves feed. This feed works fine on MLB.TV on my laptop.

I really want to love this, but MLB.TV on the boxee box is starting out the season the same way my Brewers did (0 for 2).

This still could be a MLB.TV issue. I believe there are 2 different types of feeds one for the PC and one for stand alone players with "apps". What would be a good test is if you checked another stand alone player, like a PS3 or BD player to see if that feed gives yout he same issue.

**EDIT**
The game DOES work on my PS3 and Samsung BD player so yes, this is a Boxee issue.

I can't speak for Apple, but the PS3's new app is as good as I've seen, especially with the ability to shrink the current game and browse the scores of other games(and switch to them if you want).

The game is now available, and working fine. When it works, it looks great. If the consistency improves, this will be a great app for out of town baseball fans (and $60 cheaper than ExtraInnings on cable).

Gents,

Just got word about 30 minutes ago from MLBAM that high quality streams were disabled for some emergency maintenance. Confirmed this issue as affecting Boxee users who are viewing live MLB.tv games with the High Quality setting.

A message is now appearing in the app, but wanted to check in here on the forums as well that this issue appears to be intermittent on a few games and the provider is confident the issue should be resolved for tomorrow.

Will keep you up to date as we learn more - in the meantime I just watched the Indians get a monster shot off of Wakefield in Normal Quality.

Sucks just as much. :(

Hey guys just wondering if a lot of you that are having problems have tried just using the boxee browser and going directly to the mlb.tv website like you would if you were on your computer. I'm not satisfied with the actual mlb.tv app but i found it to be a lot easier just going to mlb.tv directly through the browser. I do however have a lot of trouble trying to watch more than one stream at a time like using the split screen (the 2nd game I choose is bad quality and trying to split it 4 ways is impossible) But you can jump to any inning, watch condensed games, highlights and all that good stuff like you would normally on your computer. Also you can fast forward and rewind a lot easier you just use the arrow and manually do it on the video itself not by using the boxee ff/rw controls.

I don't believe you will get the HD stream if you use the website. On the PC you have to have that NextDef plugin installed in order to get HD streams. On the Boxee, you can't install that plug in. The Boxee app has it built in so that is why you can get HD streams with the app.

I'm not sure about that...I tried it last night and it looked pretty good. The quality button on the bottom of the screen indicated HD. It can be hard to tell with sports sometimes - I've watched plenty of HD baseball and football from Fox on cable that didn't look anywhere close to HD.

I have Roku and Boxee Box. Yesterday I bought the MLB.TV monthly package. I installed Roku app, signed up online and watched live and old games. Quality was great.
This morning I installed the Boxee Box MLB app. Much nicer UI then Roku's. I watched a game from yesterday, quality terrific. After work today I went to watch a live game on Boxeeand was told I needed to sign up for an account at mlb.com/boxee. I went there and it wanted me to sign up for MLB.TV package. At bottom was current subscriber button. All that did was take me to watch game on computer. I figured I would sign up for another MLB. TV account and call support Monday ( MLB support closed for weekend). When I went to do that I got error message from MLB.com that I already have an MLB.TV package. So now I'm stuck. I want to use MLB on Boxee Box via the app. I have no interest in having to go through Boxee Browser to watch. If thats the case I might as well just watch on Roku in other room.
Any suggestions? I could wait until Monday and talk to MLB support, but I figured I would see if anyone else ran into this situation?

Go to your boxee account on the PC and on the services tab, disconnect from your MLB.TV account and then log in again. This should fix that.

Did you change your login ID on the Boxee? I have 2 different logins for my boxee and even tho I have both of them associated with MLB.TV, if I use one and try to use the other, I have to re-associate that one by logging out and back in again on the Boxee.tv site.

Actually it was the error message that was confusing. Turns out the error message pertained to the alt feeds of games. If I clicked on other feed it worked fine. MLB should put in the error message that you need to have premium to watch that particular feed. It's all good. I feel awful for those having a bad experience, my video/audio on HDTV is terrific.

This may just be me being dumb, but does Boxee's new UI make it so you can no longer access your network settings when you are inside the MLB app?

For example, say you are using a VPN, and want to switch back to your local network after the games initial load....this used to be possible, but it now looks like the only way to get to "Settings" is by closing the app?

Thanks for your help.

After a full week of MLB TV on Boxee Box my grade is A. Picture/Audio is just great. Local blackouts are out of Boxee's hands. Boxee needs to fix one thing to get to A+. If you click on standings you get last years ending standings, not this years up to date. I would give A++ if they would offer the condensed games like the website does. Not only shorter for watching while getting ready in the morning, but no announcers, it's just field mic's picking up the real sounds of the game. Please make this happen.

Lol, yeah. i meant wtf is up with the standings? Yeah, condensed games would be awesome but the worst part is the ffwd/rwd and the inability to select the inning. But that will be fixed in the next update.

May favorite feature so far is the ability to change to the radio broadcast or eliminate the broadcasters completely!!! Great for watching the whitesox and their awful announcers!!

Trying to watch the Indians game this evening and the performance is just terrible - entirely unacceptable. Stoping and starting evert 10 to 15 seconds - no audio 80% of the time. Its really completely unwatchable. Very disappointing for a service I just paid $120 for...

How consistent is the performance usually? I watched the Indians game last night and it was fantastic - nearly perfect. I'm still in my 5 day window with MLB.tv where I can get my money back - anyone have a guess as to if I should or if these problems will dissipate?

For reference I have a 16mbit down connection and I test more than triple the required bandwidth for the HD streams on mlb's own bandwidth tester. I'm running a high end Buffalo router, so I don't think the network is the issue as I stream 1080p content across it all the time with no problem.

I forgot about the inability to pick an inning to start. I have Roku and if I watch a game there I can jump in at any point. This morning I used Roku to jump to 4th inn of Dodgers-Giants game I started to watch last night live.
Based on that I'll change grade to B+ for Boxee.

Other than tuning off the sound, how do you eliminate the announcers?

Within the game itself, press the center button and then click up to the settings button:

http://support.boxee.tv/attachments/token/1aqqb14gmyp9op0/?name=OSD_Settings_icon.png

From there click on the audio tab and then press the up or down arrow under the audio tracks. I believe that:

1 - Actual TV Announcers
2 - Radio Announcers
3 - Park Sounds
4 - Park Sounds

You may want to check 3 and 4...not to sure if they are the same. Also note that it takes a while for the audio to switch. This is actually an issue with Boxee itself but after about 15 seconds it does switch and it is synced up pretty well. Hope this helps.

Yeah, i had issues with the Cubs game last night. Then again I was going through a VPN. I did find a way around it. It isnt the most convenient but you could open the browser ad go to http://mlb.com/mediacenter and select the game there. It plays pretty well. You can also get condensed games there too.

So far my experience has been very solid, very few issues at all. I've not used it for any live games, as all Jays games are blacked out in Canada, but I've watched a few replays without any issue at all. Anyone know if there 'one-click' way to skip to the next event/batter/inning or is the only way by clicking the menu button and then selecting the bookmark button and then the correct event? Minor complaint, otherwise so far, so good.

Tried it for the Cinn-SD game and once I knew what I was doing it worked perfect. #4- Spanish radio feed for this game.
Once I remembered the 15 sec wait for it to change I was all set. It's amazing how different a baseball game is on tv with just the real sounds of the stadium and PA announcer. Thank you so much.

I must say, after a rocky start, the quality and reliability of the streams has been good over the past few days. The final remaining annoyance is that audio seems to drop out for 30 seconds or so every 5-10 minutes.

Is there any word on when the next update of the app will be available?

Tried the field mic's audio feed for the Cubs game from Wed night this morning. Didn't work. I don't know if it was because it's a replay of the game or if field mic's are only available for certain games. As great as it worked on the Reds game, I will say it's not an easy way to change audio feeds and a lot of people will probably not bother. Sometimes hitting the center button changes the feed ( there are 4 numbers for feeds) and sometimes it doesn't and then you have to keep hitting the center button. The numbers aren't labeled as tv, radio, field sound, spanish, whatever, so there is an element of guessing.
Not a deal killer for sure, but after watching 4-5 innings of the Reds game with just the natural ballpark sound I'm hooked, and hope that the developers read this and fine tune for a killer app.
BTW.... a must, must, must... ability to go to any inning if game has already started or if a replay of game. Roku's version has that and it's just a must for Boxee. Right now if you want to go to a game in progress there is no way to specific where in the game to go. The forward button has a mind of it's own and there is no way to know where in the game you will end up.
All in all, killer app anyways... video/audio on my HDTV is superb.
Fine tuning time now.

Yeah it is kind of annoying but you have to wait a few seconds for the feed to switch. So far of all the ones I have tried the number assignments are:

1 - TV Announcers
2 - Radio Announcers
3 - Park Feed
4 - Alternate Radio (Spanish Feed)/Park Feed

Something else you may want to try, if you cant get the park feeds, switch to the home broadcast. I just went to http://mlb.com/mediacenter and clicked on the cubs game from last night. It looks like on the WGN broadcast you only have the options of selecting WGN-TV or WGN Radio as the overlay (nexdef must be on). However if you switch to the Astros feed, you get the option of the TV, Radio and Park feed. I wonder if its because MLB would have to send the same feed twice?? I dont know, but anyways the next time you have trouble with the park sounds, try switching to the home feed.

Also, yeah. The ffwd/Rwd is hella awful but they said that it is getting a major overhaul in the update in May. And Rob stated in one of the comments that the "Jump to an inning" feature will be added in the same update

Thanks so much for the imput. I'll test Astros feed after work. i have to say i'm extremely impressed with video/audio quality. Big tip of cap to developers. NHL Gamecenter Live needs to hire them. I tried NHL Gamecenter Live and it was jerky, clunky, and nowhere near the quality of MLB TV.

Yeah, MLB does a good job. They are streaming at a solid 4.5mbps and NHL is at 3.0. Also MLB has developed their own app but NHL (and NBA, MLS, and NFL) use neulion. You would think they would be able to get their stream to work...

So it looks like the FFW won't be fixed until May? This is painful.

I use Boxee (on my PC) and the MLB.TV app almost exclusively for watching games that are in progress, but watching them from the beginning. Not being able to skip past the commercials to catch up to the live game really makes it difficult to watch a full game, especially given the bug that when the actual live game ends, the stream closes and is not available for ~30 minutes.

That said, video quality with the Boxee app is always fantastic and if they add jump to inning and keep the streams from closing when the game ends this app will be nearly perfect. I just wish I didn't have to wait til a month into the season to be able to FFW.

Tried Astros feed when I got home to odd results. The park feed didn't kick in until the 4th batter in top of the 1st. Then it worked for the rest of the inning. When the bottom of the 1st started the tv audio feed kicked back in. I think the developers might have a glitch in there to look at.

When revenue is at a premium in sports it's foolish to skimp with mbps like the other sports are doing. Offer a high quality stream experience and people will pay. Don't, and we won't.
Look at Netflix, it's not that they only charge $7.99 that gets millions to use it. If they offered crappy streams it wouldn't matter how many movies/tv shows a month you could watch.
NHL and the others need to get with the program that many of us are using BB/Roku/Apple TV/Google TV on our HDTV's and don't want to pay for crappy streams, but will pay for quality.
Until I can trust NHL Gamecenter Live to delivery proper stream I'll stick to NHL Center Ice.

What stinks is that as far as I know, neoulion is in charge of the developing. So that means they dictate what to prioritize. And since they do work for tons of other cliebets it may get pushed back. NHL should honestly higher MLB advanced media.

MLB advanced media does the streaming for NCAA March Madness as well as every single ESPN3.com broadcast. They are excellent at what they do. I really hope NHL and NBA ask for help.

Which game or is it every game?
I'm reading others having problems and I'm having a great experience and wonder is my setup different then others? Am I just lucky? I feel bad for those not having the experience I'm having with it. We all should have it working properly. I'm curious if people having issues are wired or wireless, and what internet connection speed they have.
I've noticed that the only times I have issues is when I have Vuze open on my computer. I use that for bit torrents and it always sends my network into a total slowdown and everything runs like crap. Now I make sure I have Vuze closed when I open MLB TV. Something for people to think about while troubleshooting.
Good luck.

My experience with MLB app has been frustrating. A few variables that come into play:
1.boxee app
2.MLB service
3. LAN connection - 100 Mbps wired
4. WAN connection - ~15 Mbps Time Warner highspeed broadband

My observations: During daytime, I can generally get an excellent HD feed however during primetime hours (7pm - midnight), the streaming is particularly awful and very pixelated. I am trying to determine if this streaming issue is related to bandwidth congestion on local Time Warner leg (everyone and there grandmother streaming netflix before bedtime) and/or if MLB servers are slammed hosting 20+ live streams for millions of viewers. I suspect it maybe a little of both, TW throttles down pipe a little and MLB downgrades stream to accomodate more users. Another thought is some team streams are more maxed out than others. I'm a cubs fan and most WGN feeds appear inconsistent. I watched a small market Marlins and Pirates feed during primetime hours and quality was excellent. Yet another variable.. only two live games were being broadcasted that evening. Steaming live movies from navi-x has been great for the most part day and night.
I'm also test driving an jb apple tv2 and while the stream does not appear to be HD, the quality is more consistent with less hicupps ( ie, no sporadic ff or slow mo rewinds and less pixelization)
Hopefully the new boxee firmware will improves things and MLB will experience less congestion once free viewing expires in May.

My solution to MLB.tv issues on Boxee:

I use AT BAT 2011 on my iPad.

Jailbroken iPad (TV2Out) == Apple DV cable (HDMI) == TV

Advantages:
- No blackout games. (Thanks to Location Spoofer)
- Decent to Excellent video quality with no hiccups in the stream.
- Access to Condensed games and highlights.

I watched a game last night for the first time on my BB and it ran ok. There were the occasional slow downs but usually if I just let it work itself out, it usually got better. But I think the commercials run longer on the BB than on my laptop because I seemed to always get a few outs behind the live game. For example, I'd back out to the main scoreboard window at the beginning of an inning and they would already be 2 outs in.

I've had MLB for two years and used Boxee for part of last year and this year, as well as using my browser. For me, Boxee is a way better experience than MLB in the browser, especially when I had a spotty internet connection.

The quality under Boxee is higher than I can get using Firefox on the same machine. Not sure why, although I select Nextdef and deselect the box that allows MLB to adjust the video quality, it is only high def for me under Boxee.

I had a spotty connection last year, and for the first month of this year. MLB in the browser was frustrating because whenever it lost the connection, it would go back to the start of the game. At least with Boxee when it pauses it just continues rather than skipping back. With my lousy internet connection MLB in the browser was just unusable.

Now I have a solid internet connection but I guess due to MLB changes, I also cannot fast forward or rewind in Boxee. I have to start the game and wait 15 minutes or so til the game starts. But I can pause, so I do watch part of the game in the morning, pause it, and when I get home resume. I'm looking forward to the update.

With my current internet connection, which is just a 15mbps cable connection, I can watch a game from start to finish with a few pauses using Boxee.

Has anyone noticed a higher quality stream since May 1st? The WGN feed cubs/dodgers games look stellar in HD with no/minimal issues. Hopefully this is not a fluke and the free game leechers from April went away saving precious bandwidth for the paid subscribers.

I already got my ROI for yearly subscription by not watching games at the local bar and dropping $30 each time on beer and wings.

I was watching the Cardinals game last night and I agree, the quality has seemed to bump up. I know this year they increased to 4.5 mb/s. They advertised it for the PS3 so maybe Boxee was able to get that stream...even though i thought they already had it. Anyways, MLB has seemed to sort itself out perfectly. Now for that ffwd...

Also about the bandwidth, its all done through Akamai. So if there are bandwidth problems due to too many users MLB should consider either dropping akamai or doing like netflix and spread the streaming out across multiple CDN's.

About NHL, yeah I hope they drop neulion. Neulion is responsible for plenty of other sports (NFL, NBA, MLS etc...) but it just seems like they dont scale very well. Now MLBAM (Which does MLB.tv) also does ESPN3 and NCAA March Madness. Basically they are good at what they do. I am wishing and wishing that NHL hires MLBAM.

What I dont get is that MLB.TV costs $100...but NHL Gamecenter is half the games, less quality and about $60 dollars more. Its a big mess.

That's why I won't bother with the NHL package. The MLB package is a bargain vs say the Directv version, which is almost double the price of MLB.TV. This is an NHL thing. They are just complete bumbly idiots when it comes to marketing their games and their TV.

MLB understand that MLB.TV is a DOUBLE source of income. Directv/Cable pays MLB a flat fee for the rights to sell the package. Regardless of how many subs they get, the fee is the same. With MLB.TV, MLB is grabbing those same potential Directv/Cable subs and now, not only getting those licence fees from Directv/Cable but ALSO getting the $100-$120 per sub from MLB.TV. It's a win win for MLB.

The NHL is too stupid to understand/realize this and thus they charge way too much(about the same as the TV package) for an internet package that is cr@p. So people will not bother.

To put it in perespective, there is NO WAY I was going to spend $200+ with Directv for the MLB EI package. However, at $100(or even $120), it became a bargain through MLB.TV, so I did buy it.

I thought the app was working quite well in the two weeks before the firmware update. At the beginning of the season the app was useless.

Now I have too noticed frequent buffering with the high quality stream despite running it through a 25 Mbit/s line that played the hi quality stream nicely before the update.
When I switch to default qualitiy or adaptive there is no problem. So what's wrong with the hi stream, Boxee?

I thought the app was working quite well in the two weeks before the firmware update. At the beginning of the season the app was useless.

Now I have too noticed frequent buffering with the high quality stream despite running it through a 25 Mbit/s line that played the hi quality stream nicely before the update.
When I switch to default qualitiy or adaptive there is no problem. So what's wrong with the hi stream, Boxee?

Yeah...I'm on the high quality stream, too. Guess I'll have to try the adaptive.

I watched a game with the new firmware on high a couple days ago and it worked pretty darn good. No buffering in my 12mb/s stream...

If adaptive is anything like the adaptive on my Samsung, no thanks. My Samsung gets annoying at times as it will pop up a window that says "Adjusting Stream Quality" that is annoying too large, everytime it wants to adjust things, which can be quite often, depending on the quality of the stream. On my Samsung, I can't turn that off, if I want high quality streams.

The Boxee app was working perfectly for me, before the update, so if it's buffering now(I have NOT watched anything long enough to really see any issues yet) then it's something Boxee needs to fix. You shouldn't have to do adaptive if it was working on High before.

Was there a choice of stream quality before? I'm not saying there wasn't, but I never noticed it or went looking for it. Regardless, if there was, I assume it defaulted to high prior to the update, the same as it did after, so the result should be the same. I don't like the silly conversion to DD 5.1 on the MLB app either, but that's getting plenty of criticism elsewhere.

Yes there was. There was High quality and Standard quality I believe(if I remember right). I think it defaulted to Standard Quality but not sure now. I could be confusing my Roku with Boxee.

I'm going to revert one of my 2 boxes back to 1.04 tonight if I get a chance, due to the "everything 2.0 to DD5.1" "bug" so I check to see what was there since I'm not sure the new MLB app works with the old firmware.

Anyone noticed a lower quality of picture since the update? Before the update, the picture was crystal clear, even on normal quality. I had a friend comment that it almost HD quality. But since the update, it gets blurry quite often, usually during transitions. Anyone else experiencing this now?

I thought so too, when I switched to standard or adaptive quality because hi just buffered ever so often. But this past two night were excellent on hi quality. I watched two games and only had one or two really short, like two seconds, buffering experiences. The rest has been really great now with the MLB app.

So why don't you give the high quality stream another try?

Yes. At the beginning of joining a game for several seconds it's a bit blurry. I didn't know if it was my eyes or not, and it very well could be, but the picture doesn't seem quite as sharp either on Boxee Box or Roku to be honest for the last week or two. Certainly still very very good, but I wouldn't rate it excellent as it was previously. While the free preview was going on did MLB jack up the stream?

I haven't really noticed any degredation. It seems about the same as before.

As for the buffering, I did experience it on the Cubs feed a couple nights ago, but when I switched to the other team's feed it seemed ok for the short time I watched. I watched a couple other games for at least an hr+ each, over the last couple nights and never had any buffering. This is on the High setting without the overlay turned on.

Also, anyone know how to do the pop up details on every pitch that they say is now implemented into the app?

7) MLB.TV Upgrades – This new version has enabled a lot of updates to the MLB.TV app so now you’ll be able to watch live and archived games, jump to specific innings or game events, see pop-up details on every pitch, and have a much easier time rewinding and fast-forwarding in games.

I tried looking for it the other day but maybe I just missed it or it isn't very obvious where it would be.

You have to turn that option on in the settings, before going into watching a game. It can't be done while watching the game.

They seemed ok, but the one time I watched with it on, the pitch speed was showing up a second or 2 BEFORE the pitch was visually being seen, so I stopped using it.

Anyone having issues with MLB.TV again? It was working great for a while, since the firmware update however I'm having a lot of trouble. Really irritating as that is a paid service which has been affected by the forced update.

Just purchased my first month. I'm stuck on the "this game will begin shortly," screen. Streams work fine over my laptop. However the whole reason for my purchase was to watch over my boxee box. Help?

Oops. I guess you have to fast forward.

Wow! The video quality is nice! Really eager to try this out while games are live. Anyone know if there a work around for blackout games?

Finally a new thread and poll should be started since from what I can tell the app was just recently updated.

For getting around blackout games, I think it could probably be done using a proxy server. Whether that would even work with the boxee box, I'm not sure.

It does work. I'm in Yankees blackout area. I use OpenVPN on my Boxee Box, set to a Canadian server, seconds later... Yankees game.

Agree on new poll. I did have a bunch of freezing issues during the Phil-LAD game last night, but in general MLB TV has been a dream this year. They still need an actual jump to inning button like the Roku version. That was said to be in the last release and isn't.

Can someone point in my the right direction to setup a VPN or Proxy to get blackout games?

You can jump to the start of any half-inning by pressing the middle/select button to bring up the options and then choosing the chapter select icon (can't remember what the button looks like).
