View Full Version : Installing Boxee on Vista (with UAC on)

Hi hi, I've found an issue with Boxee and Vista (or rather Vista with UAC on)

Boxee wouldn't install into the default Program Files area unless it was running with Administrative Priviledges which is fine, however all your profile and metadata files are also saved in there instead of %users% or whatever.

So what was happening for me was each time I'd run Boxee I'd have to setup all my folders again unless I ran Boxee with admin priviledges. Not something I want to do.

The simple workaround for me was to uninstall Boxee and reinstall it in C:\
That way UAC doesn't stop Boxee from saving to the folder :)

boxee saves to %appdata%: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=3962

That's not the case with my install...
"c:\Users\media\AppData\Roaming\BOXEE" doesn't exist
"c:\Users\deman\appdata\roaming\Boxee" does exist, but is largely empty except for a IRSSMAP file
But C:\Boxee\userdata exists and has a whole bunch of stuff

So I'm not sure what's going on there
If it helps anyone, the media account used is a standard user account. Any installs need to be done with the administrator one.

Pressing WindowsKey + R will bring up Run, you can then type in MSCONFIG and in the tools tab at the bottom there will be two tools to turn on or off UAC.

I think you should simply be able to turn it off, restart, install Boxee then turn it back on if you so wish.

Or use TweakUAC. >_> Google TweakUAC.

Switch it to the Quiet Mode. Problem solved. At least, for the most part.

I got the invite a few minutes ago and JUST finished installing it without the UAC problem popping up.

I had an issue as well with UAC turned on, this is why its such a customizable feature in Windows 7.

I would not run Boxee with UAC enabled, at all! ;-)

Which is easily and quite nicely solved with TweakUAC. :P

Trust me, it works. I've used TweakUAC and switched it to the Quiet Mode and I've not heard a peep out of it ever since switching it to the Quiet Mode.
