[SOLVED]

Hi,

I live in Switzerland and was tasked with working out how an American friend could watch US only content with Boxee on her MacBook, I learned of Witopia a cheap VPN service located in the US. It works great and Viscosity is a super GUI.

I was thinking that it would be nice to use the Apple TV to also see the US only content, however, I don't have a router capable of OpenVPN ( I also don't really want all my traffic going via the US).

I figured that it must be feasible to install a *nix GUI-less flavour of OpenVPN on the AppleTV and copy the certifcates and conf files from OS X over.

However, I am by no stretch of the imagination a *Nix, VPN, Network Guru.

From what I have learned, it could be possible to install Macports, then install OpenVPN and run it from the command line via SSH (or maybe activated/disabled from the scripts that are now accessible from ATV-Loader directly on the AppleTV).

Anyway, has anybody done this already?

Maybe you could share with me the steps, maybe even commands to achieve what I am talking about?

Many thanks

Floyd

So the solutions is very simple, register witopia, (pay $36 using a coupon found online).

Copy tunnelblick.app to the applications directory on the ATV. (easier if you copy it to ~/ then mv to /Applications).

copy all files from ~/Users/<YOU>/Library/openvpn/ from your mac to /Applications/Tunnelblick.app/contents/resources/ on the AppleTV.

sudo kextloader tun.kext

sudo openvpn --config openvpn.conf

Et voila! all I need to do it work out how to script it from within Boxee (I assume that it will force all my SABNZBD traffic via the the VPN too.

So doesn anyone know a good/cheap VPN for the UK?

If you install Macports, you will have to bring over the complete development environment to get compilers/linkers and libs. That's a pain in the rear. It's much easer to make a pkg using Macports building on a 10.4 OSX box, then just install that pkg. It will include all dependencies.

You can do this via the router configuration. Instead of installing it on AppleTV install it on a *nix box and make it the gateway for the AppleTV. That will then route all your traffic through the vpn client and out your real gateway.

No need to mess around like that. There's a much easier way.
I will work something out over the next days. Stay tuned.

I'm anxious to do the same thing. Will be "staying tuned" clm421!

Note that I also have existing VPN access to the US via the CiscoVPN client. Hopefully your solution will support that CLI.

Witopia also offers a free PPTP connection, does anyone know the cli for PPTP connections under OS X?

it's actually easy as cake.

just get a precompiled version of openvpn for osx10.4.x as to be found in e.g. tunnelblick.
copy the bin, the tun/tap kexts and your config/cert files to the atv.
change the permissions.
load the kext w/ kextload and start openvpn with the appropriate config file.

Following the instructions above and some hints from the Hotspot Shield thread I seem to been nealry there, the only problem I have is I am getting the error "Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: packet HMAC authentication failed" after everything seems to be fixed, I think this may be related to the permissions of the keys, how can I correct those?

I forgot to mention that using the hotspot shield config works fine, however I get the impression that they can get staturated during the evening, hence I want to use a paid service.

Hi Everyone
I have been using the HotSpotShield solution for 1-2 days now (since the great guys here on the forum found out how) :-)

However I'm considering WiTopia now. Anyone already has some experience regarding speed? Is it worth the 40$ for this service for using Hulu and stuff (and soon ABC - yuuhuu) or would you say that HotspotShield is just fine and there is no difference between the two when we talk about bandwith speed?

Thx for your opinions...

I am also interested in what people think of the WiTopia service. I currently have hotspot running on my atv and it works ok, still get some buffering and the commercials always comes up saying I don't have enough bandwidth.

So now that we can get openvpn running on the atv, has anyone created a plugin to control it. something that could start the vpn service as well as send telnet commands to the manager program.

thanks,

Hotspot Shield Vs. Witopia

I found that HsS buffered a lot, and in the European evening it was pretty unusable. Unlike Witopia which has been fine every time i used it.

Also, as HsS gets more popular I can only see ther sevice going downhill, epsecially when everyone works out that they can circumvent the ads by configuring Tunnelblick manually.

P.S. Has anyone worked out how to get a script to start and stop VPN yet?

Magic! Got Witopia up and running. You need to add one more step to your guide regarding the "turbo kext enabler" binary you have to run before you load the keys.

I'll play around a bit more and maybe write a little shell script to turn things on and off. When it's turned on, I can't access the BBC iPlayer anymore. Maybe someone can write a simple boxee app to toggle the VPN on/off

Thanks a bunch for this guide!

I've been streaming a few tv shows and movies and there is no bufferring issues at all with hulu and witopia. This was durring uk prime time. Worth every penny - even with the rubbish pound.

I have Hotspot running but was planning on setting up a private server in the US. If witopia works it is easily the best value. Anyone watch 480p Hulu in the evening without stuttering?

Currently 480p Hulu won't play without stuttering even without vpn and well outside of prime time... Changing vpn solutions isn't going to fix this...

I got a VPN from strongVPN, then configured PPTP to run on a dd-wrt Linksys WRT54GL router.

It's been working great for nearly three weeks, great speed and video playback. If anyone needs help let me know.

That's the one I used, however, there are may companies offering VPN, so shop around first. I like Witopia as they build a custom PKG for you already with tunnelblick and the certificate built in.

How easily turned on and offable is it though? Surely it means that all your traffic is being routed?

Please help me! I have a WRT54-TM router with the dd-wrt firmware and want to use purevpn pptp service. What did you do to route the tunnel through the router?
