hi all,

we have just released boxee for mac osx with ABC support. so get Lost ;)

according to Torrentfreak (http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-pirated-tv-shows-of-2008-081223/) Lost was the most downloaded TV Show on Bittorrent in 2008.. ABC (http://www.abc.com/) has two other shows on that Top 10 list (Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy). it is clear ABC is producing great content, and it is no surprise that our users want (http://blog.boxee.tv/2008/11/21/you-told-us-what-you-want-now-we-need-to-make-it-happen/) to stream it on boxee.

we have released a new version of boxee for Mac that includes support for ABC, click here to download (http://app.boxee.tv/download). we hope to release an Apple TV version within the next few days (not available for Windows and Ubuntu).

we strongly believe that given the option most users will opt to stream a TV Show (with a reasonable amount of ads) rather than using a file-sharing service. especially now that they can get most mainstream network content through boxee.

the online streaming offered by ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, etc. has made great progress over the past 12 months in terms of quality, breadth of selection and release windows (i.e. the time it takes for the show to be available online after it originally aired). in my opinion they have created a great alternative to file-sharing networks. if they want to really eliminate illegal downloads they should release it simultaneously online (in HD) and remove the geo-restrictions, but i’ll save that discussion for another post.

Umm...yes. Lost.

Woot.

Question (and not to open a big can of worms here)

If I build from source, will it work on any platform other than OS X? I've been creating my own personal boxee builds for a bit and I'm just curious if this will work in a "roll my own copy" on windows / linux.

Is a changelog published for each release?

normally yes, but in the case of this release abc is the change log.

would look something like this:

added abc.com (mac only)

Awesome, is this using ABC's HD streaming?? I hope it is cause ABC and Fox have the best HD streaming compared to the other networks. And I would love to just cut out their websites in my viewing!! Keep up the good work.

The ABC content is streaming so much smoother than Hulu or NBC.

It seems like it adapts to my bandwidth because sometimes it goes blurry for a second or two and then goes back to being sharp. Hulu completely pauses to rebuffer, which can be very frustrating. I would much rather have a smooth stream that went blurry from time to time, than the constant buffering for constant quality.

Hope the other providers start using this (if it is in fact what ABC is doing).

Is ABC restricted to us only?
Well, I'll soon find out by myself but it would be nice to know if I should hurry home.

Yes. All the broadcasters use geo-blocking.

The abc stream looks like SD and not HD. Can anyone confirm this?

I agree that abc has the best HD streaming of any netowrk. I hope this is working inside Boxee.

Before updating to this version on the mac, I could use command-tab to go from full screen mode to windowed mode. Now I can't. Any ideas?

The backslash "\" key is the shortcut for switching to windowed mode.

Great job on getting ABC. Any idea when it will be available on the ATV? Thanks again for the hard work.

Hello. Using a mac mini with the latest boxee and I've noticed that opposed to the previous versions this new one keeps removing content I've manually added.

For instance I have a lot of television shows I've ripped myself and for whatever reason no version of boxee can automatically see what they are so I have to browse to my local files and click on one and use the Recognize Video feature to add the entire series. This works fine and I'm happy with it but I notice that if I leave boxee on for any extended perios, say over night for example, in the morning the content I've added is not visible anymore and I have to manually have boxee recognize it again. This didn't happen in the previous version. Anyone else having the same issue?

I can't play ABC on my boxee. I'm from portugal and I have to use Hotspot Shield for playing most of my video content from the Internet. Hulu just play fine but ABC is not playing at all. I choose the tv show, then the commercial appear and then all I can see is a black image. I've tried reinstall Boxee but continues not to playing. Any sugestions?

PS: sorry my English, I don't speak to often.

Hi all - first off, thanks to the developers and the rest of the community for making this project happen.

The setup:
2Ghz mini w/2GB
10.5.6

Prior to updating, I was running 0.9.7.4825. It had the occasional bug (usually related to bad scrapings, or volume in some of the flash videos), but was entirely usable.

I did a clean install of the .4880 release, excited about the addition of ABC, and now....nothing.
All internet videos play 'white screen' w/ no sound. (Hulu, CNN, Com Central, ABC, etc - all of them).

The UI for each internet video site works as expected, but upon playing any video, the screen goes all white and there is no audio. The timeline and counter advance as though video is playing. App hangs if a FF or RR is attempted, but will stop gracefully, dropping you out to the UI for that video source.

Additionally, adding sources does not initiate the scraper (so nothing ends up in the library). I've got about 130 or so movies and probably 300-400 tv episodes on a NAS, but upon adding those sources, nothing ends up in the library. No error is displayed. I can browse to the video files themselves and they play without problem, but the library functionality is kaput.

A dirty downgrade (reinstalling .4825 on top of .4880) does not resolve the issue (it doesn't actually appear to downgrade anything, since ABC was still there).

A clean downgrade does eliminate the problems (internet videos play fine) scraper picks up content after source is added, etc.

I assume I'm alone in this, as nobody else has noted this experience. I hope someone can help, I was really looking forward to not breaking the law to watch ABC shows on my own time anymore.

What's the best way to do compare my release version with the latest release version? That way I can know if I have the most up to date fixes/enhancements.

Thanks.

I installed the new version, did get info on the app, and it showed the old version number. So I trashed it and installed again, did get info, and it still shows the old number. It *seems* to be the new version -- abc is there. Just doesn't reflect this in the version #.

I am in the exact same boat. Sometimes I will have sound and no video, sometimes video and no sound...and no indexing.

Sorry if this is covered somewhere else, but I was not able to find a post. Any idea when 0.9.8.4880 (abc support) will be available for ATV? The original post said a couple of days and it has been a month. Have there been technical difficulties similar to Netflix that are preventing this from happening?

Nice combination for not getting anything! CBS, nada; ABC, nada; etc. Apple trailers, yes (who cares). Hulu, well not accessible. Because I am using ATV, cannot use apps like anchorfree. OK, what is left to Boxee which sounds great only if I could use it! Any development coming for a full AppleTV (using ATV Flash) support?:(
