I just got a link to the questionnaire/sign up to the windows alphas, It told me nothing, it just said thanks for telling us we'll let you know sort of thing. Obviously it is available cos there is a windows forum with lots of people reporting bugs and stuff. So where did they get there's? is there a central repository? Is it like a secret email think where you have to have posted 500 posts on the forum and then you get the email? I just want to download it!

You just have to wait.

Boxee Windows Alpha is currently in invite status, meaning that when you post on the form you are put into a waiting queue.

You may have to wait a while. I just got mine a few days ago and I posted back in December.

Alternatively, you could download the source and compile it yourself, but this is not supported by Boxee and takes a long time because of all the stuff you have to download and all the settings to change to get it to compile right.

Your best bet would be to just wait.

Ok I get that its an "express an interest and wait" thing but:

1) what's with the wait? is it cos there would be too much strain on the sever or cos they have to compile it for you?

2) The internet is a fast moving place, judging by your experience I may have to wait till late feb early mar, by then there may be a better piece of software designed for windows.

3) When they finally get round to sending me a link how does that work are they gonna email me the link, pop it on googledocs or what?

The Windows alpha is limited because Team Boxee has limited resources to support windows users. They are letting people in slowly to ensure they don't get overwhelmed. If you're familiar with compiling your own software the source code is available for download.

From what I've seen the invites are pretty random; I got mine more quickly. The whole "there may be a better piece of software designed for windows" argument is pretty weak, imo. There are many other media center apps for windows already, none of them provides the same level of internet content as boxee

3) When they finally get round to sending me a link how does that work are they gonna email me the link, pop it on googledocs or what?

They will email you a download link.

I have noticed anyone who is currently in the Windows Alpha has more than capable system. I signed up for an invite around 6-8 months ago and just got my invite on the 9th. Don't remember if you had to list your system specs but if so it looks like they picked a lot of people with processors over 2.5GHz and pretty good graphics hardware.

Yeah, but I've got my invite and my processor is 1.6 GHz and only 64 MB on an older video card... Boxee still runs, just basics though
