But it is already sexy ;)

Sexiness is subjective, i still think it has some way to go.

Vista Media Center (Realatively sexy)
Front Row (Average but ok, Sexier on Apple TV)
XBMC Various skins come as standard (look very good)
Media Central (Boring to look at but excellent functionality)

I love the Internet Video feature of boxee, it's my favorite thing, very well integrated with the other sources, but the xbmc skins are keeping me from switching over to boxee for good.. :)

Boxee should keep compatibility with xbmc skins. That would be a major plus. Or at least give guidelines so that skin makers could port their skins to boxee. :)

marcel

i agree with you ..the next version will have a sexier look and feel..we will try and build guidelines for the skin in the near future..however i sure you will like the new skin...:)

Not so much concerned about sexy, I think the green is arguably quite sexy (compared to say Front Row). I am more concerned about usability.

I have very poor eyesight, and I can not read the text on my 24" iMac 3 metres away. The main issue is contrast. White on green is very low contrast and makes it very hard to make out. Same with the grey on grey that is prevalent throughout the UI.

I hope some effort is put into a high contrast, large font UI. Usability should come first for any media centre effort.

And it CAN be made sexy too. See TV and to some extent Front Row.

I've been playing around with boxee and plex for about a week now. In terms of features. Boxee wins hands down. Absolutely LOVE it. However from a visual appeal standpoint, Plex with the media stream, or Aeon skin....simply Amazing.

Come on Team Boxee, you already have the others whipped in terms of functionality :)

i was wondering: is it possible to have the boxee skin for XBMC?

because.. i'm having a hard time to make ubuntu work with my hdmi output... but i love the interface! it would be great if i could use the skin with xbmc until the windows version is released for beta testing...

while you could extract the theme from the source (http://app.boxee.com/download)

i'm not sure it would function with xbmc. the main screen of boxee is heavily dependent on boxee-only features.
best case: the main screen is just mostly blank
worst case: it completely crashes xbmc.

either way, it's worth a shot... if you do try, post back your findings. i'm kinda curious, now.

I agree whole heartedly, the only things keeping me back from boxee is #1 the look and #2 getting a version for windows. I know #2 has been in the works from the beginning.

Is the new skin going to be Aeon stark (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36994)?

What "update" were you talking about... did it already happen?

I know it's always a matter of taste, but I totally agree here -- Plex looks exactly how I imagine a good Media Center to be...! Smooth, sleek, elegant, unintrusive...

It's a pain in the a$$ to set up though which is one of the several reasons I'm sticking with Boxee... ;)

I am going to have to agree, Plex has the look and feel I want in a media player, but Boxee's internet capabilities are really awesome.

Besides the poor look and feel of the default Boxee skin, there is one other thing that is a deal breaker for me:

When Boxee scans my media, it seems to get some things wrong, and puts some of my 'TV Shows' into my Movies library and there doesn't seem to be a way to override this. Also, I don't like the way it sorts using the prefixed 'The' that is found in the title of so many movies (ie, it put's 'The Royal Tenenbaums' in the with T's when I would expect it to be with the R's). There are other small drawbacks (that probably aren't worth mentioning) that keep Plex a slight favorite for me right now.

But I will say that I like the immense potential that this media player has, and I look forward to seeing improvements in the future.

Now that's definitely subjective ;) Actually I don't mind the way iTunes manages my music as long as you give it FULL control and are only serving to one machine.

It's too bad the TV and movie management is sooooooooo bad when using non-purchased content.

With the increased interest in skins, I am working on one of my own to see if I can get it to look better on my TV.

So far, I have managed to tweak some of the logos and change some of the "rollovers" but it is a bit time consuming on my end as I have a low low end pc running Photoshop to edit colors and such, then porting back/forth to the Mac.

Interesting to see the many results I am getting from changing some of the colors. On the Mac, looks great, on the TV, looks fairly good, but not good enough just yet.

Some External Shots from the TV and via Mac.... Very rough progress indeed, but will post more results once I finalize it. (very early in the stage I know).

I have linked to my personal site to save on Boxee's bandwidth. They are mostly to show what it looks like both on TV and Mac Screen. The settings menu picture is to show what it looks like without modifications and how my TV handles it a bit poorly. :)

Maybe social network can be in the launcher that goes across the screen, so we can choose whether to look at it or not?

The scroll going horizontally looks really sleek, as well as having fanart, keep up the good work, and PM me if you need a tester :)

Hi

I'm looking to have more skins in boxee on ATV with my 46" HDTV.. I do like the mainstream in xmbc.. is there is any way of getting that over to boxee?

I currently have a background image folder set... with great HD images although currently they are not clearly (hardly ever) visable as they are set behind the skin (dimmed out)... I would like to get rid of the actual skin (dimmed out bit) and see more of my images.. Would this be possible?

I see this post goes back several months and i note there is still only one skin option in boxee.. is this correct.. are we looking at days/weeks or months before we see more skins?

Hi

If you would like to change/modify the boxxe skin on atv here's a simple way.. I like to show great HD images in the backround... this may be simple to some but for those who dont know here's what i did.

On your PC put your wanted images into a new folder.
Ssh this folder into fr/pictures.
Open boxee on the ATV go to settings then General then Background image,
Here select either a single image of the whole folder you sshed into fr/pictures
Exit Boxee.
Ssh again into ATV, navigate to applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/skin/boxee skin NG/media
Delete from this media folder (save copies to pc hard drive first) as you may wish to re use them,.. delete files: browse_background_bottom.png, browse_background_top.png, browser_background.png, dialog_background.png and home_background.png
Open up Boxee on ATV
The background image/s are then clearly displayed within the skin...

For me the existing only skin is a little boring with that grey... background, the above for me adds a new feel particually if you have some nice HD images to show off.. If you dont like it you can always ssh the deleted files back and restore the original skin..

Looking good. You might want to think about replacing the default weather icons that boxee uses with those that xbmc uses. The boxee icons do not scale well past a certain resolution, as visible in your screenshot they start to blur. I believe you just have to replace weather.rar with your own custom archive of icons.

I like what crni and illuminaughty are doing.

crni: can you do anything about the other items scrolling off screen? I think excluding social content on the main screen may help improve the performance of Boxee running on the Apple TV.

Back to Handbone's suggestion... I know the concept was based on Mediastream (http://www.teamrazorfish.co.uk/mediastream.html) for XBMC and is more about a view for navigating content. However, what if it was more Amazon/Last.FM like? it would be very slick if when viewing media info it included some additional recommendations along the bottom.

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8126/browsebackgroundbottomez3.th.jpg (http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?image=browsebackgroundbottomez3.jpg)

This could be something like "other people who like this also like:", "other people who recommend this also recommend:" or how about even more "social" with "your friends who like this also like:" This could be a configurable option, if I wanted it to be recommended vs liked vs watched and friends vs everybody. Now that would be uber cool and take advantage of the social aspects of Boxee.

(Friendly threadbump here)

Only coming on board in the last 2 months I don't know the old Boxee look, but looking around at some XBMC skins I came to love the Aeon skin. Beautiful skin that looks nothing like anything else out there. Any chance of persuading the Aeon people to port that skin to Boxee (I believe they're closed source)?

lostmyshape
August 15th, 2009, 05:41 PM
people are doing a great job here porting mediastream, but i agree that Aeon is so slick. Alaska (http://www.aeonproject.com/alaska.html) is looking super nice, too, and seems like it might be a great solution on touchscreens (not that i have one, but i'm considering it for a project).

i don't think that it's closed source (aren't all the skins simply xml files that anyone can get into?). you just need someone who's familiar enough with the workings of xbmc vs boxee to get rid of the xbmc-only xml and add the boxee-only xml as far as i know. i don't thick it's hard (if you have xbmc skinning experience), per se, but time consuming and tedious.

I'm extremely leery about modifying custom skins for boxee until it is out of beta and more "stable" gui wise. Things keep changing rapidly with this software so I'd think it'd be frustrating to try and maintain a skin set for boxee at this point in time.

That's just me, but if anyone's willing to port some skins I'm in full support of it. It just seems like a daunting task to me right now.

I find Boxee's skin very nice, transparent with option to add background slide-shows too. Very neet, very professional.

Although existent skin requires a lot more perfectionism, it's quite well in displaying information in different views, functionality, boxee way.

I.E. In thumbnail view, release of TV SHOWS is 01.01.1970 (guess tvdb link got broken).

Also very nice idea per me would be to put a green or red dot before titles, marking them ended or continuing :D

Anyway the guys call it "Aplha" with a reason.

Thanks team :)
