we have released an alpha version of the boxee remote app for the iPhone.
while we are waiting for Apple to approve our app we thought it would be good for people with jailbroken iPhones to give it a try.

here is how you can get it:

Open Cydia.
Go to Manage->Source->Edit->Add , and add "http://apt.boxee.tv/cydia/" as a source.
Choose "Boxee" from the source list.
Choose "Boxee Remote Control" from the source list.
Hit "Install"

tips:

the boxee remote app has two modes: Gesture and Buttons.
in the Gesture mode you need to hold down your thumb and move it around in order to navigate.
clicking on the boxee logo acts as Select/Play/Pause
dragging the boxee logo to the edges of the screen will act as a continuous up/down/left/right
clicking in an input field will open up the iPhone Qwerty keyboard and will enable you to easily enter text
the app works over WiFi, so make sure the WiFi on your iPhone is turned on

let us know what you think!

i kind of feel the same way. However if they do make true bluetooth transfer then I will probably jailbrake the thing. If I had an ipod touch, that thing would be jailbroken.

Folks,

I've had 3 different issues while trying to follow the above steps.

1. Repository cannot be found
2. Cached Failure (Still keep getting this error)
3. Cydia crashed

i was kind of hoping it would have these features, but also be able to navigate it like the itunes remote and view the "read more" sort of info on the iphone screen while a movie or music is playing.

I puzzled over this too. Go to Settings/Network/Servers. It's whatever password you ahve set for Web Server Password. Not sure what to do if you haven't set a password already.

Hope that helps.

See if your web server is enabled under Settings -> Network -> Servers.

You need to have the latest version of boxee of course...

was hoping for keyboard support. But that may come with the next boxee update hopefully for a universal search...hmmmm... But so far, works fine on my phone. I'm having a little trouble clicking to allow it to select things in gestures mode. Not sure why the boxee thing is on the bottom too. I feel it takes away some screen real estate. Also it would be nice to be able to control volume from the iphone. Landscape keyboard for search and such would be bomb though.

just installed it and tried it out - works like a charm! the gesture based control thing is gonna take some getting used to but it makes for the coolest remote control i've ever owned...

am i imagining things or does two finger scrolling do something different than regular scrolling?

edit: this also makes using xmote and the other xbmc remote control app obsolete, hopefully everybody's keeping up with the announcements so as not to spend money needlessly at the app store...

Avner, Tom Marcel

Havent got a jailbroken phone so am just going on the description, screenshots and thread comments.

The shots look really nice, but I had expected feature parity or superiority with Xmote - right now that seems a better option.

Can you comment of plans to expand the capability of the boxee remote app?

Not sure if this has been asked already, couldn't find any references... will you be releasing the sourcecode of the iPhone application?

Asside from the fact I have an iPhone developer license (and can compile for devices) to test with, it would be great to be able to contribute.

I'm really looking forward to being able to control boxee without the TV using up electricity just for playing music, although from the screenshots I'm not sure if this is possible yet.

Cheers, sam

Wow. Someone on the #boxee IRC channel just mentioned this and I went and installed it on my jailbroken first gen iPhone.

It fired up, found my macbook and started working with zero configuration. Very slick.

I find the gesture based nav to be awkward, but the button based nav works great. Love it.

Honestly the only thing so far that I wish it did is pop up an iPhone on screen keyboard when Boxee wants text input. It would be even more amazing if it would allow you to rotate the iPhone to landscape to get the bigger keyboard buttons for those of us with fat fingers.

With the addition of ABC feeds, Boxee finally crossed the "Wife Acceptance Factor" threshhold enough that I'm looking for a used MacMini to put under the TV. We both have iPhones, this, when available to her non-jailbroken iphone, just makes it that much more impressive.

I second the call for the source to be opened. I've got a copy of XCode right here, and while I've not yet forked over the $99 version to allow upload, that's coming. I'd love to contribute.

Would love to be able to use this as a "remote" remote - i.e. without looking at the TV.. Much like Apple's own remote iPhone app for iTunes. Maybe just for music!

Just downloaded via Cydia at work and can't wait to try when I get home with my AppleTV! From the sounds of it, it's very basic at the moment. Beyond the good suggestions for keyboard support, since the iPhone / iPod touch have gyroscopes in them, how about some WiiMote-like control of what's going-on on my screen?

This is my big complaint about TiVo, that their interface is very linear and they haven't innovated to give us the "next" paradigm in useability. Wii has done a great job of this and so have the HillCrest Labs people with their "loop" pointer. Seems like all the guts for making a really nice controller are in the iPhone / iPod touch, if there were a way to exploit it in boxee's interface (which does mouse control, no?).

Don't mean to be punching a gift horse in the mouth, though! Thanks for creating this remote app, good people of boxee!

A few months ago, There was an app called Podcaster that apple kicked off of the App Store. I was able to go to the developer's site and download the app, drag it into my iTunes apps, then key in a code supplied to me by the developer. I was then able to install the app onto my un-JailBroken iPhone.
Any chance this process could be followed with the Boxee app???

I have a iPhone 2g (edge - 1st Gen) that is jailbroken. I press the "Search for Hosts" button but get "No Hosts Found" error. I am testing Boxee on Windows, Linux and OSX but have had no luck.

How do I test that the Boxee web server is working? Is there an other network settings I need to look at? I've disabled all three firewalls for the moment to try to figure this out.

Very excited about the possibility though!

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

I don't know who is requesting a keyboard. The keyboard works just fine searching Youtube and Hulu. A "universal search" would be sweet, but that's more of a function for boxee itself, not the iphone remote.

This is great software guys. Thanks a ton. What an awesome surprise out of nowhere.

Oh, and to those who are whining about not wanting to jailbreak your phone, boo freakin' hoo!!! Cydia is a tool for the bleeding edge. You can't get all the best apps if you're not willing to get your hands dirty. I'm just giving you a hard time, by the way. Don't whine about my comments, too!

Oh, and for installing an app through itunes with a confirmation code, that's an ad hoc installation. Developers get a limited amount for each app, 50 I think. The boxee devs have to use those in-house so they don't run out. If they did, they couldn't test their own app on multiple phones!

Thanks again, can't wait to see the next surprises!

Hi, im not so happy with the size and look of the buttons.

I'm using jaadu vnc instead which works much faster and more intuitive. (and pretty ;)
http://www.candykitchen.nl/temp/jaaduvnc_buttons.jpg

With your app i constantly miss the correct button so i must look at the screen again. The layout of the jaadu app works blindly. I hope you guys can take a look at this.

(i have designed this look btw in case you need someone to help out)

I believe that your test is done while the iPhone and the Boxee machines are on the same network. :)

Is the WebServer enable in Boxee ?

This app works great. I'm using it on my ipod touch with the windows boxee. I was skeptical about the gesture mode but after using it for a few mins I now love it, its very intuitive and it means I don't actually have to look at the ipod to be able to work it.

The sad thing is I use boxee on my computer, the mouse and keyboard are on the desk in front of me, but sometimes reaching for them is just too much effort lol

Thanks for enabling my laziness guys :p

yes I did have the webserver enabled through Boxee.

I just installed Boxee for Windows on my last test / spare laptop and it worked just fine. I suspect it may be that I have installed XBMC on all the other test machines that I have. I could be wrong but I will test again tonight. The remote app is awesome. works like a charm!

Yes, and now that developer has an Apple-approved RSS reader named RSS Player. See http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10150859-37.html

What f1r3f1ght3r and Wilsons are both talking about is the AdHoc that someone else also mentioned earlier. This would be nice to check out on a non-broken iPhone because as another published iPhone developer I know how long and painful the process can be for approving iPhone apps. I have been seeing better results recently though. I think our last new app only took a week to approve. So either they are getting better or once you release a couple they are quicker to get new and updates out for you.

Thanks Boxee team for such a great utility. Gesrure mode works great and takes about 30 sec to get the hang of. No need to look at I phone - you can just keep your eyes on the screen. A pop-up text entry would be REALLY amazing though.
I can't understand why some folks are so nervous about jailbreaking their phones. What's the big deal. The iphone-dev team makes it so easy and safe.:)

AWESOME iPhone remote app. Very impressive.
I *do* have a problem, but it's a problem with the iPhone itself, not the app... At first (like mikebeuler on page 4...) the app couldn't find a host. I figured out the problem was the iPhone was on my neighbors' WiFi network, not mine. As soon as I chose my own WiFi network, it worked like a charm.
However, it didn't last, as my iPhone keeps switching networks all the time!
I know it's not Boxee's fault, but... is there any way to force the iPhone to stay on my home network, and only mine?

Works with Ubuntu, I was amazed. Didn't expect it to. It's neat and handy and I'm sure it'll be more feature rich in the future. The only thing that mystifies me about the Gesture based remote is how to adjust the volume. When you're using the buttons, there's a little bar at the bottom, but there's not one with the gestures unless you go to now playing. I tried to push the icon up, but this results in the video skipping forward like twenty minutes and then stopping. Other than that, it works well, just takes a little getting used to with how far to push. I like it.

Just to be clear. I've made sure that the iPhone are both on the same network (BeulerNet Wireless - 192.168.1.xxx). the iphone has an address of 192.168.1.3 and my MacBook has an address of 192.168.1.4 Subnet mask, etc all match. They still can't connect.

I'm assuming this is just TCP/IP on Port 8800 and is nothing too complex. This work for me when I move the laptop out of the house to another location (other wireless hotspot).

I looked at the logs on my router and saw that the app was "allowed" traffic:

[ALLOW: app.boxee.tv] Source: 192.168.1.4 Tuesday, 03 Feb 2009 21:56:46

I'm assuming the problem is a setting on my router. Any thoughts? Anything I can test for?

Why does installing the boxee app through Cydia force me to install winterboard? I want the app, but winterboard causes crashes on my phone due to conflicts with other more useful apps. When I tried to remove winterboard, of course the boxee app went with it.

Can someone explain why winterboard is required? Will I have to wait for AppStore approval before I can install the Boxee app again?

I've found the Boxee remote to be both good and bad. When at home the remote finds and can control Boxee on both of my Macs with very few problems. On the otherhand, it can't find Boxee running on the Macbook I use at work. In all cases the webserver in Boxee and via the System preferences is turned on.

As this is still in the developmental stages (and it's still free) I can get past the current connection problems - Boxee is great and this only adds to the convenience of using Boxee.

obviously; what i mean is - lots of these remote programs work natively with macs because of bonjour or some other protocol.

usually they require helper apps to run as little servers on windows machines.

my question is: does the iphone app require additional software to be recognized in windows, or will boxee recognize it over wifi by itself?

The boxee iphone remote works well for me with the apple tv.

Is there such a thing a one app for the iphone to control everything.. standard ATV/XBMC and Boxee?

I note there are now 3 separate apps.. Xmote, Boxee app and the itunes remote (all for iphone) which seem to work well... having to switch from one app to the next on the iphone is a pain... i tend to go back to using the apple remote..

anyone find this ?? surely one app is the answer?

Is there such a thing a one app for the iphone to control everything.. standard ATV/XBMC and Boxee?Check out Air Mouse Pro, it's what I've been using to control my Mac mini over WiFi:

http://www.mobileairmouse.com

Like the Boxee app, it has two modes: an "air mouse" mode where the gestures you make in physical space correspond to the cursor on screen, and a "touchpad" mode that works like a laptop's touchpad. You also get a keyboard and some extra programmable buttons that you can assign to common apps. (You do have to install a helper app on your Mac, though.)

thanks for the info... this Air mouse pro sounds incredible... just what i need for surfing the web etc on my 46'' tv whilst lying on the bed. I use windows xp .. i will buy this app shortly..

My initial aim is to find a remote for the apple TV/Boxee/XBMC.. (without the use of a pc) i supose this would work if you have your pc running and have boxee/xbmc on your pc, but not support the apple tv menu functions?

I use the apple tv often without even using my pc and looking for a remote for all functions.

Thanks again i'll know more once i buy the air mouse, the reviews are good even without apple tv functions.

I couldn't get it to fly: It would list my server twice (which is, in itself odd) but would generate a connection error whenever I selected either.

PS - how do I take screen shots on my iphone?

to take a screen shot with the Iphone press the power button and the Home button (big round one) at the same time, you should see a shutter effect and the picure will be in your photo app.

I have a problem wit the remote connecting to my ATV. I have ATV and iPhone both in the same subnet. When ATV was connected over WiFi, everything worked fine. Now, I've connected it through ethernet, and remote reports "error connecting to Appletv.local"

Is that port being blocked by your router? It works perfect for my iPod touch without touching any settings.

nothing is blocked...I don't know why it won't work

it's so frustrating because I use Boxee on a daily basis and I'd love to be able to control it with my phone

So did I and it indeed goes straight to my best iphone applications (http://www.cell-ringers.com/the-apple-iphone/application/) list. Works smoothly, can't complain at all. Congrats Boxee, really nice work.

I'd like to see a Boxee remote app for iPhone that includes a keyboard. Does this one?

There is. You click on the text entry field, then the keyboard will pop up. It says so in the 1st page of this thread. :P
