View Full Version : BBC iPlayer stopped working

ceeblee1
March 5th, 2009, 07:23 PM
BBC iplayer is showing the error message "There was a problem accessing this content" on Boxee both on ATV and on the Mac. The content works fine when accessed directly from the BBC website.

Any ideas what is going on?

Has this been pulled?

Getting exactly the same problem and error message. Just installed on Mac and AppleTV today. Sorry, I can't help with an explanation though...

are you using the latest version..does this happen on specific shows?

Nothing on iPlayer works with 0.9.8.4882 on the Mac, just trying 0.9.9.5324 (test version)...

Nope, doesn't work you just get the 'there appears to be a problem with this content, try later' bbc page.

You are all using a UK IP ? Can you send me your Boxee logs..

Same for me via AppleTV - earlier version, and the new test version. Happy to send logs if someone can point me to a link showing how to do so...

Same problem for me too. The station ident plays fine, but when it tries to show the actual programme stream I just get the "there appears to be a problem with this content, try later" message. I am on ATV 2.3.1 and, I believe, latest (downloaded a couple of days ago) Boxee/Launcher.

A real shame as the XBMC iPlayer plug-in works on ATV, but is so s-l-o-w it is horrible to use!

I also don't know how to get logs. But Boxee itself isn't hanging, so will they be much use anyway?

Same here

UK IP address, ATV 2.2 and latest Boxee.

All worked perfectly last week, now just get the same error message as above. Tried a number of shows all the same.

This is a real shame as Boxee was the only bit of my ATV that worked properly:mad:

Please help

I am getting the same problem as well I have a UK IP address, using the BBC iPlayer website works fine.

However in Boxee on the Mac 0.9.9 and AppleTV 0.9.7 both show the program listings, but when you attempt to play a program it shows the BBC ident then attempts to load the program but fails with: "This content doesn't seem to be working. Try again later."

Same here.

Not working on previous release and not working on the current 0.9.9.5324
version either. From what I can see idents of the channels work but none of the actual content loads.

Sent some logs but never done this before so not sure if I have sent appropriate things.

Installed Boxee on my iMac earlier, iplayer not working, then crashed. Will try again at next update. Also didn't find any of my media content either. Overall pretty bad.

jamesfoster
March 7th, 2009, 05:53 PM
I cleared my logs and played 4 iplayer videos, but no log files were created, or I would have sent in my logs.

I can confirm that it is working again if you go through the app. but my "Recently Used" links still take me to the broken videos.

excelent work.

@yuvalt - how will you select what quality you want? In the case of low bandwidth you would still want the low quality feed.

March 7th, 2009, 06:31 PM
Hi,

The reason that the old items do not work lies in the reason that the iplayer video player is launched differently now. sorry, but there's nothing we can do about it.

Reagrding video quality, in the future we can add an option to the application so videos can be played in different qualities. Before we do that I want to know if this is a real issue, since the bandwidth needed to run the high quality videos is still not too high. I'm more worried about the performance of the higher quality videos on ATV. If anyone uses iplayer with ATV, I'd be happy to get some feedback on that. If there's enough request to support both low and high quality videos, we'll add it.

Just watched half an hour of iPlayer from AppleTV. All seems fine, certainly the higher the quality the better as far as I'm concerned. What is the bitrate now out of interest? My only quibble is that if I pause and re-start the video judders and I actually have to stop and restart to get it working again - as I mentioned via Twitter.

marcel
March 8th, 2009, 05:37 AM
please post the request for higher quality video feed at http://getsatisfaction.com/boxee/ the more votes the higher the priority (and more likely yuvalt will implement it:))

Same here,

Watching iplayer at the moment on ATV and its all fine as far as I can see.

In fact maybe a bit better than usual. It always chugged (framed out) when you brought up the video menu and didn't stop till you dismissed it. Now it only frames a bit when you first bring it up.

ceeblee1
March 8th, 2009, 06:53 AM
Thanks Yuval, all working fine again. Excellent, speedy response.

Are we seeing the higher quality streams now?

You may want to consider whether the opportunity for you guys could be larger right now in the UK than the US... (1) unlike Hulu the BBC is unlikely/not allowed to block access to the iPlayer, (2) there is a 140/yr incentive to buy an Apple TV to watch BBC programming via Boxee+iplayer rather than using a conventional tuner, as a licence fee is not required for non-linear programming.

For light, tech savvy viewers in the UK this effectively means an ATV for free. Disconnecting live tv will not suit most people but the presence of the iplayer in the UK creates a permanent foundation from which to build.

Next steps would be to add support for the ITV player (Silverlight) and Channel 4.

Thoughts?

There's still a problem! When searching for a video it seems to be still returning the bad links. sounds like there a little duplication in the code *wink*.

Also, browsing by category doesn't work (hasn't for several weeks!!)

marcel
March 8th, 2009, 10:12 AM
close boxee and restart it ..just checked here and the search and categories features work..

March 8th, 2009, 10:49 AM
Lost it, regained it, now lost it again.

I was pleased to see Iplayer back last night but now same messages are there again.

Hope it can be sorted soon as Boxee with Iplayer is amazing

Keep up the excellent work

marcel
March 8th, 2009, 10:54 AM
we will get it working ...don't worry as it's one of my favorites ..

jamesfoster
March 8th, 2009, 12:13 PM
I've already restarted Boxe several times over the last few weeks and categories hasn't worked for about 3-4 weeks.

Go to TV > Categories > Entertainment

Then select any of the sub categories, you get no results apart from on "Most Popular". You even get no results on "All Entertainment...", lol.

... Just restarted boxee again

... Nope, same problem.

Categories don't work as described above, and playing a video from the search results doesn't work. For example, at the moment, in Highlights there is Heroes: Trust and Blood. If you play it from Highlights it works. If you search for "Heroes" it is the first result. If you play it from the search results you get "This content doesn't seem to be working".

Please advise

jamesfoster
March 8th, 2009, 12:20 PM
Also, when I click on a video on the home screen and select Browse, it should open the bbc iPlayer!

thoughts?

new thread?

marcel
March 8th, 2009, 12:23 PM
ok ..added this as bugs

1. from search content does not play
2. Under Categories specific content does not show..

jamesfoster
March 8th, 2009, 07:27 PM
What did you mean by just checked here and the search and categories features work..

Do you see what I see or not?

I'm guessing these aren't such quick fixes? Will they require a boxee update?

iPlayer still not working for me. :(

I still get the dreaded "Content not working" message. It did briefly work after installing the latest alpha, (I think for just one video) but now no joy.

(ATV 2.3.1)

Installed Boxee two weeks ago specifically for the iPlayer functionality and it worked really well. However this weeks its just stopped working with "content unavailable.....Try again later"

From the thread I can see that its an issue but as yet can't see a way of getting round it. Any ideas anyone.

Thx

I can confirm that the iPlayer is now working. It has been since March 8th.

Categories now work. But playing a video from the search results still doesn't. Perhaps it is this that you're trying to do?

Its still not working here.

Selection from all areas within the player givens the message "content unavailable....Try again later".:(

The BBC iplayer for Radio does work. STreaming on other services works fine and downloaded a film last night on Apple TV fine.

Hi there, everyone.
I am Federico, and i live in Argentina.
The same error keeps showing when trying to play BBCOne live streaming or any kind of videos.
I'm actually a fan of both Life On Mars, and Ashes To Ashes, and here in Argentina I won't be able to watch the new series at all!
So, i was wondering: Is there any way to run BBCOne Live Streaming with my actual IP adress? Or should I try to run some kind of UK IP Proxy (btw, :confused:i've no idea how to find one... USA proxys are all over the web, but don't know how to find a british one).
Well, thanks in advance to everyone, and i hope someone can help me, cuz it might be even harder to get the dvd!
Greetings!:)

Nops... I get the not working now message in every video.
When trying to acces BBC iPlayer, it says i can't watch it cuz i'm out of the UK.
I'll try tomorrow, maybe it's a clock trouble... it must be around 4am there.
Anyway, thanks! I will still thank if anyone knows how to watch it outside UK.
Greetings

I don't know if this is related but I am watching iPlayer via VPN (witopia) and it is rebuffering every 30 seconds or so, no matter which video I select. Is that normal via VPN?

I can't get iPlayer working in Boxee either. I've now got it working in Firefox quite well (via a proxy to the UK so I'm using SquidMan as a local proxy to avoid problems with having to log in to my password protected proxy).

I've seen a press release from the BBC that says that they have released a new version of iPlayer.

See http://tinyurl.com/cjzb8p

Boxee probably just needs a tweak with the new player.

jamesfoster
April 21st, 2009, 06:08 PM
Yup, 0.9.11 appletv

BBC iPlayer is now completely caput. The Highlights and "Just In" (the only working features left) now display a blank page. Also the Channel Listings display no results just like the Category Listings. Weirdly "Drama" was the only Category that had any results for a while, but now, none of them do.

If this is due to a change in BBCs API, I don't understand why some people report no problems.

PS. I can't wait for the ITV, Channel Four, and Five players all appear in Boxee!!

http://www.itv.com/ITVPlayer/
http://five.tv/demandfive

Of course Channel Four need to make an online player rather than a locked down bittorrent client for DRMed wmvs which knacks up your pc. Seriously. It opens so many connections that your CPU starts running at 100% constantly if you've downloaded more than 10 videos. And the settings file controlling the max connections is updated every 10 minutes from the channel 4 server so you can't even tweek it to work properly...

One person can't shout loudly enough.

JimWiley

+1 Here as well!

After all the fuss that was kicked up over Hulu, I can't believe more people haven't complained about this one. This was the reason I installed Boxee on the ATV in the first place to get the iPlayer on the TV, rather than squinting at it on a laptop screen...

Please can we have some official word from some one at Boxee that they are at least investigating the problem, or have confirmed the problem. I think that people in the UK deserve the same level of response that the US folks got over the whole Hulu thing (which pushed back a scheduled release, after all).

Regards,

Jim.

I'll add one to the 'broken' list too.

Our Sky box crashed (yet again ) while we were watching Ashes To Ashes on Monday. "Don't worry, we can watch it on iPlayer tomorrow", I said to SWMBO, having been playing with it on Boxee the day before.

We got back late last night, all ready to watch it, only to find that iPlayer had stopped working. Confirmed on Apple TV and my MacBook. :(

Marcel,

Thanks for all of your hard work on the iplayer. I use it a lot, and its a fantastic service.

Does the Boxee iplayer use the BBC "big screen" interface? I see the big screen interface in a normal web browser does not show BBC HD so assume that we're unlikely to get BBC HD on Boxee?

Even if we did get it, could the Apple TV handle the processing?

Thanks again.

Im currently running latest version of Boxee on Mythbuntu 8.10 (32bit).

All BBC content plays for approximately 30 secs then goes to a screen saying
"there appears to be a problem with this content, try later"
This only happens in Boxee, the BBC iPlayer website in Firefox works fine.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

Currently on 9.11.5774 ATV and can't get the iPlayer working. It comes up with the content not available error message. I'm using a Proxy from the UK which works fine on my Mac and I can download TV shows and Films via the ATV iTunes (from the UK listings). I basically run the Proxy from a Mac using Squidman and manually edited the Network pref file on the ATV. The external IP is from the UK...all good.

Hi, I feel sorry for all you experiencing technical difficulties with BBC iPlayer.

I have had no issues with it at all. Not since the last time we got these messages (earlier in this thread)

Marcel, the categories and playing from search results are up and working again. The iplayer is once again fully functional.

Thanks.

Is this on Mac or Linux?
If Linux, what magical distribution are you using?

I may give up on Boxee as I'm only really interested in the BBC iPlayer. Its a shame because the interface is really good, it just doesn't work for me. I've already tried MythVodka and had no luck there, so looks like i'm stuck with a web browser and sitting in front of a pc. :(

I am lucky to have a Mac/AppleTV and Linux box with Boxee installed on all of them. Everything is super on the Mac/AppleTV -- Linux is hanging up on the Flash stream about 30 seconds into the play out.

Linux -
Ubuntu 9.04 with the latest (yesterday/today) install of Boxee from the apt-get command.

Platform: GNU/Linux. Built on Apr 26 2009 (SVN:5777M)

Nothing looks interesting in the log file - but happy to send it if it helps.

My guess is that there is something slightly different in the Flash player/wrapper. I looked through the (binary) code a bit -- Flash 10 binary is in the libflash that Boxee supplies - and I haven't had trouble with "regular" iPlayer in Firefox etc. on same box.

If anyone wants me to test, etc. happy to look at stuff. The application code - I guess - is all up in the Boxee application repository, not easily examined unless someone can point me to it.

Hope to fix it as well --

Ran across this in Linux topic -- http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=8347

0.9.11.5774 on appletv

This is after all the appletv forum.

@mikeglover, I recommend sticking with boxee. They are a good team and I'm sure they'll eventually fix this issue. I'm sure you agree it's a great app. Especially when plugged into a tv. Beats watching it on a laptop.

jamesfoster

I'm only using appletv. Don't know if it's working or not on any other platform.

When I browse to BBC iPlayer > TV > Categories

Then click on any category. i get the list of sub categories down the left hand side. But absolutely nothing down the right hand side, no matter which sub category I choose.

This is intermittant. It is occasionally down for a few days at a time. Sometimes only hours. It is currently working.

I always assumed someone at boxee knew about and was keeping on top of it.

Can't get Boxee iplayer plugin on either my mac of linux box.

Mac - straight away I get the message that the content can not be played.
Linux - content plays for about 5 seconds then I get the same message.

As a work around I'm using the xbmc plugin which runs fine in Boxee.

I have upgraded to the new release (the speed increase on ATV is great) but the BBC does not seem to be working.

The menus are all there but we are getting either a black screen when selecting play or the "this content does not appear to be working message". This is the same when selecting the programme from the search menu. Also the new BBC live application gets the content not working message.

There were similar problems once before but someone managed to fix them. Any ideas? Thanks

Im also having the same problem I uploaded the latest version of boxee and now iplayer does not work.

is there a way of going back to the old version???

how long does boxee take to correct problems?? hopefully not to long as I LOVE the bbc iplayer its the best bit !

The iplayer shows up in the boxee brower but when you select a program to watch nothing happens ie it does not stream

Did boxee check this before uploading this new brower?, I bet not ;-(

Also I notice that channel 4 and 5 have made there website mac friendly, so will they also be on the apple tv???

Thanks

I don't think this is due to the new version. I haven't updated (0.9.11.5774) and bbc iplayer has stopped working in the last week (we could watch Mitchell and Webb last week but not this).

I thought it might have been due to the "are you over 16?" question on the website, but even cbbc stuff isn't working.

Everthing is working ok via a web browser.

jamesfoster

You are correct that it's broken in 0.9.11, however you should be able to search for your show (just type "webb" into search) and play it from the search results. At least I was able to get several shows to play that way.

However, in 0.9.12 you can't even use the search results to play shows. It's completely caput.

Eagerly awaiting a fix!!!

Has the author of the BBC iPlayer app or boxee tried contacting the BBC?

They have technical teams who are trying to get it working on as many devices as possible. Since i'm guessing this is an American project here's how the BBC works. It's a publicly funded organisation and is obligated to provide its services to people in the UK. For example when the iPlayer first came out there was a minor uproar about it initially being windows only. (hence why they developed the flash version that works on Windows, OSX and Linux)

If Boxee can get in contact with the BBC technical team responsible for iplayer then you may be able to create an app that accesses the video streams direct instead of the roundabout way of using a browser with flash.

Another example is that the BBC created a special version for the iphone/mobile devices. (for example, I can watch the iplayer on my iphone)

Woop.

BBC iPlayer is working in 0.9.13

... only thing is... I can only watch childrens programs because I can't say I'm ok with watching "adult humour" or "langauge which may offend"

Is there anyway you could set the cookie required?

One solution is to add a settings page to the BBC iPlayer app.

Thanks.

Great work!

Is there any way to debug the Categories problem locally? All I get in boxee.log when navigating around the iPlayer interface is:

INFO: Loading skin file: DialogProgress.xml

Or could you send me a debug version with extra logging in this area?

It would be good to see what feed it's accessing (or failing to access). This is also a problem on Boxee on my mac. Sometimes it loads the feed and sometimes you just get a blank right side of the screen.

I can't be the only one who has this issue?

Sometimes I still see the 'Click to Play' icon, but the video is actually playing!

Or, if I select an item that I have watched for a few minutes, then closed, and go via the 'recent items' and open the item again I also get the 'Resume' icon in the middle of the screen but the video is playing from the point at which I stopped watching.

Nearly there ...

Hi folks

BBC iPlayer is back up and working now, after updating to 0.9.13.6684
Many many thanks again to all the hard work on this - it's much appreciated.

I still have a problem though... in that the playback is very choppy, with lots of stuttering and often very poor lipsync. It's so poor that it's unwatchable right now.

Doesn't seem to happen with any of my local/networked content.

Has anyone else experienced this?

thanks

Sounds like you ADSL connection is having problems or your local BT exchange is congested.

Does the same stuttering/problems happen if you watch the same program on your PC?

Thanks for your reply.

No - Only happens with AppleTV. Fine over PC.

Also, you kind of get a feel over the years for the kind of stuttering that is cause by download/bandwidth problems - and this doesn't look like that. Could be wrong of course, but iPlayer is fine on all my other devices.

Anyone got any other ideas? All gratefully received.

I've just bitten the bullet, and restored the whole box. I needed to upgrade from OS2.2 to 2.4 anyway.

Just upgraded to the latest Boxee for ATV today (16th July). BBC iPlayer video has completely disappeared! Radio is there and works, but no video at all! Am I doing something wrong??

The Boxee implementation of iPlayer is *much* better than XBMC's... if only it would work! ;)

Yes. I get just a black screen when I try to play any show in iPlayer. It broke several updates ago and hasn't worked since!

This latest update hasn't fixed it. The BBC live player does exactly the same thing - black screen: no audio or video...

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm sure you are on the right track. If I look in App box/My Apps, iPlayer is listed with a video icon. But in my Main Apps/video category there is just a BBC app that only list radio programmes. So it does indeed look like a configuration error.

Where exactly is "sources.xml"? A search on my ATV reveals:

boxee_media_sources.xml
sources.xml.in.diff.appletv
sources.xml.in.diff.osx
sources.xml.in.appletv
sources.xml.in.osx

Is it one of these you mean, or am I missing the real one somewhere?!

Thanks again,

Chris

oh right, the video has disappeared, not the app... Sorry for the confusion.

I did the atv update and reinstalled the patch stick and boxee. This may be a requirement for iPlayer to work but I can't say.

No you were right - the *App* has disappeared. I don't have an iPlayer App in my App/Video menu any more. I have a "BBC" app but that only lists radio shows.

You're absolutely right.

I also reset my ATV to factory settings and upgraded back to 2.4 and ran the patchstick again. I then installed Boxee.

Now iPlayer is back and running beautifully!

Thanks for the help folks. The sources.xml tip worked for me. I renamed the xml file so Boxee wouldn't read it and so started with a clean sheet of apps, then I was able to add iPlayer from the App Box.

So it's now working and watchable, though a little choppy. On XMBC, iPlayer is much smoother (though the interface layout is poor and very slow) so still a little bit of tweaking to do, methinks.

But thanks again to all for getting it working again!

repost again...

I'm getting very frustrated of going to browse shows by category and getting nothing. there's no predictable reason for it doing so.

I'm only asking for the means to discover what's happening myself.

If anyone else has the same problem could you please let us know?

Is there any way to debug the Categories problem locally? All I get in boxee.log when navigating around the iPlayer interface is:

INFO: Loading skin file: DialogProgress.xml

[This is not very useful.]

Could you send me a debug version with extra logging in this area?

It would be good to see what feed it's accessing (or failing to access). This is also a problem on Boxee on my mac. Sometimes it loads the feed and sometimes you just get a blank right side of the screen.

I can't be the only one who has this issue?

I'm sure search results were working, but I've just tried to play "The Chaser's War on Everything - Episode 1" from the search results and all I got was a black screen.

From the boxee.log the url it tried to load was flash://www.bbc.co.uk/src=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fiplayer%2Fepisode %2Fb00lc6xb%2FThe_Chasers_War_on_Everything_Episod e_1%2F%3Fsrc%3Da_syn30&bx-ourl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fiplayer%2Fepisod e%2Fb00lc6xb%2FThe_Chasers_War_on_Everything_Episo de_1%2F%3Fsrc%3Da_syn30&type=text/html

However, when browsing to...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lc6xb/The_Chasers_War_on_Everything_Episode_1/?src=a_syn30&bx-ourl=http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lc6xb/the_chasers_war_on_everything_episode_1/?src=a_syn30&type=text/html

You're right. This is not an issue with search. It's probably just an issue with that particular show.

I'm a newbie...

Just bought an apple tv today. Running FW2.4. Ran the patchstick, installed latest boxee, all fine. Found this black screen error with the iplayer.

Frustrated as hell. Tried everything I could find on here. Nothing worked. Then I just fell back in my chair in sheer frustration, staring at a black screen. Low and behold.. after a two minute gap, my iplayer show started playing.

So I tried another show. Black screen for two minutes, then it started.

So it is working, just I have to wait a heck of a long time for it to kick in. Is this the usual experience?

jamesfoster
July 27th, 2009, 07:42 PM
No, it usually starts playing after 2-3 seconds. Sometimes it's can be up to 10 seconds but I just put that down to my connection speed.

bleem2k
August 1st, 2009, 08:46 AM
From what I can see iPlayer will load (load time is quite variable but could be something to do with my connection) however there must be a timer that "clicks" the play button..

this timer appears to be of a fixed length and I think sometimes it's "clicking" before the click to play button is displayed. What I've found is going pause/play again gets it going...

really frustrating because the Boxee implementation of iPlayer is by far the most elegent!

Please fix!

Yes, I have reported a number of issues with iPlayer on Windows:
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=10378

Also, for example, sometimes World News Today will show up (in categories and/or search) and sometimes it won't. And I have never been able to get a single audio stream to play through the iPlayer App...

Just to add to the list of those with the problem. I have ATV running 2.4. I re-installed Boxee after updating to 2.4. I get the iplayer menus fine, but when I select play the screen goes black. I wait, but nothing happens. Then I press play/pause and the tool bar comes up at the bottom of the screen and shows that iplayer is playing the programme (you can see the timer running in the left corner), but still nothing on the screen. Will keep an eye on this forum to see if there is a fix.

Thanks

I have the same issue on Linux Boxee after I restarted Boxee it seemed to fix itself. The BBC have updated there BIG screen interface http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/ Boxee currently uses the old version this my be connected to the problem, I don't know.

Yup. Tried watching a programme about Autism this evening and got the adult warning in red along the bottom and "Click to play". I saw else where (possibly in this thread) that you could work around that by pausing it then unpausing. However when I pause the video stops but the audio carries on, then when i unpause the video (and new audio) starts again. So I have two audio tracks running, one in sync with the video (which no longer has 'Click to play' - yay) and the other which is out of sync.

Very odd.

Similar problem here, although I haven't read every post in this forum. Running 2.4 and the very latest Boxee downloaded via the Launcher.

Show starts to play automatically but there is still a Play or Resume button in the middle of the screen, which is rather annoying. Clicking removes it, but it then starts a second instance of the audio of the show, which is also very annoying. It's possible to pause the video, but not the audio of the non-visible show. Thus it is unusable. Other shows don't play.

As others have said, it may have something to do with the big screen interface the BBC have just added to their computer iplayer option. I gather it's something which has to be fixed in Boxee. Wouldn't it be nice if the BBC contacted the principal developers whose s/w uses the iplayer?

Yeah, just noticed that last night. I guess the bbc aren't updating the older version of their 'BigScreen' http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/ UI, and only the new one which I guess Boxee doesn't yet support.

I only very recently installed boxee (on ubuntu). I tried iplayer once, it worked fine. But after that, the icon had dissapeared from apps, and also app box.

This has happened to me before. it's only ever happened to the iPlayer.

It is still in sources.xml, but it has disappeared from the Applications screen, as well as from the My Apps section of the App Box. It's also not in the New Apps section so I can add it again.

perhaps sources.xml contains some weird non-printable character which is throwing things off...?

The only way to get it back was to install Boxee again which automatically adds the iPlayer to your sources.

I've done a little more digging tonight, and I hope this will help the devs.

With a clean profile, I can run iPlayer*. Once it's been run, it dissapears from the apps list.

Diffing copies of my ~/.boxee dir and playing around, I discover that from the profile before I run boxee, ~/.boxee/UserData/profiles/<me>/sources.xml contains this:-

<source>
<name>BBC iPlayer</name>
<path>app://iplayer/</path>
<thumbnail>http://dir.boxee.tv/apps/iplayer/thumb.png</thumbnail>
<country-allow>true</country-allow>
<country>gb</country>
</source>

after iPlayer has been run, the block of xml has changed to:-

<source>
<name>BBC iPlayer</name>
<path pathversion="1">app://iplayer/</path>
<thumbnail pathversion="1">http://dir.boxee.tv/apps/iplayer/thumb.png</thumbnail>
<private>false</private>
<adult>false</adult>
<country-allow>true</country-allow>
<country>uk</country>
</source>

Furthermore, if I edit the sources.xml so it has the original iPlayer xml, then iPlayer reappears in the apps page.

* only problem is that the iPlayer app seems broken - clicking on a video yields the "click to play" icon in the centre of the video, and the video does not play. Yet the boxee-integrated timer increments. cpu time takes a hit too.

BBC iPlayer worked fine for me on Alpha until yesterday. I thought I'd retry Boxee Beta. Today I reset my Apple TV to factory settings and did a completely clean install of the Boxee Beta. BBC Live works fine but BBC iPlayer will not play. The screen sticks at the screen with the BBCs "Click to Play" iplayer icon. No video plays. Pressing pause to bring up the on screen display shows the counter increasing as if the video were playing. Pressing pause and then play again has no effect.

Should I just go back to Boxee alpha or is there something else I should try? Can I provide any diagnostics?

I'm still (pathetically) on the alpha, and I just tried to use iPlayer for the first time in a while. I'm experiencing the same symptoms.

iPlayer seems to have broken in the last day or two. Judging from posts in other threads, it is a problem that affects all platforms, and both the alpha and beta versions of Boxee. I can only think that the beeb have made some changes that have broken the app. If anyone knows any more, then please post!

Thanks Marcel. I do wish the BBC would stop fiddling with iPlayer  - still, works in XBMC, but Boxee offers a better experience.

(iPlayer broken on my ATV and Mac.)

I'm still having similar issues to ammc and others above.

The problems started last week as far as I know. Until then I had been running iplayer for many months happily in both boxee alpha and beta on a Acer Revo running Ubuntu 9.10.

Radio plays fine, but TV just runs with a silent black screen.

Iplayer runs fine in a web browser.

Any suggestions?

Jonathan

iPlayer still working OK on Mac and ATV :)

Perhaps there's a Linux forum here.

should now be working..

Hi there,

I've just started using Boxee today and have a probably stupid question... When I see a message that says "should now be working," do I need to do something? Will there be an update to the boxee package that will come through aptitude, or do I need to download a patch, or is there some magic happening on a server somewhere to fix stuff?

I ask because because my BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and 4oD apps are just giving me blank screens with no video or audio, and I'm wondering if I should be doing something to get it working!

My next step is to identify the log structure and try and work out what's going on, but I don't hold out much hope for my comprehension... Bit of a steep learning curve in using Linux!

Cheers,
matt

@mattachu

What version of Flash Player are you using?

@mattachu

What version of Flash Player are you using?

Is there a better way to find out than looking at the Add-ons in Firefox?

There are two listed:
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45
Shockwave Flash 10.1 r999, Gnash 0.8.6

I installed Gnash first as I preferred the open-source solution, but then I went to some web site or other that required the official player, for some reason.

Are these the same players that boxee uses?

Log out of Boxee. Drop the 10.1. Log Back into Boxee and test iPlayer again.

Hi,

Tried that. First I disabled the Firefox add-on, but couldn't uninstall from there. Went into aptitude and removed gnash and gnash-common. Restarted Boxee but still a blank screen.

Then I thought I'd try reinstalling the other flash plugin from scratch. Boxee requires a flash player, so the first option was to uninstall Boxee as well/ I said no to that and aptitude suggested installing flashpluigin-installer, which I did. Still no iPlayer in Boxee.

So then I tried removing all the flash stuff and removing Boxee too. Checked in Firefox - no flash plugin installed, iPlayer not working. Then I reinstalled Boxee, which installed the recommended flash plugin. Checked in Firefox - flash working fine, reports 10.0 r45. Checked in Boxee - exactly the same behaviour! Black screen, no picture, no sound but timer is running as if something is being played.

Any other ideas?

Hi Matt

I thought it might be because you were using open source flash, because as of the other day, BBC has disabled third-party apps from accessing iPlayer streams. They are now enforcing swf authentication when a player tries to play something. That means that only Adobe flash can now authenticate BBC content. There has been a massive backlash around XBMC losing iPlayer access, becuase swf authentication is copyright of Adobe and if OSS developers try to implement it, Adobe chases them with lawyers, read about it in more detail here (second article down):

http://xbmc.org/

Anyway, I wonder if you have fully uninstalled Adobe and Gnash - there may be something still on your system. Does Adobe produce a uninstaller for Linux like they do for other platforms? If so, run it again and also make sure all the last vestiges of gnash are also off the system and then do a totally fresh re-install of Adobe flash 10.0.

If that doesn't work, then I'd lodge a ticket on jira to have this sorted out ASAP. Remember to post your logs and as much detail as will be helpful....

There is no uninstaller for linux from Adobe, but I have checked in aptitude and everything was definitely uninstalled.

I don't think this is the problem though, because iPlayer works fine in Firefox, and it's using the same flash plugin.

There is already a bug logged on jira: http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-4423

Oh, sorry! Didn't realise you could access it from another browser with the same system...

... I wonder if Firefox is handling the swf authentication properly, whereas the Boxee Browser App is not under Linux (can verify it still works on ATV)... I think all the Boxee's are at various stages of implementation - there certainly doesn't seem to be parity across all features across all platforms at the moment...

Hope they solve your problem soon - I couldn't live without iPlayer.... :(

It would be interesting to know whether anyone has iPlayer working on Ubuntu, or any Linux flavour. Is it a problem with the Boxee code failing on Linux, or is there something special about my setup that is causing the bug? I've heard from three or four people that iPlayer is not working on their Linux box, but I've not heard from anyone saying it is working. It could be a bug specific to some setup, or it could be something simple that I can sort out myself.

Just had a thought - Could someone with a working iPlayer in boxee 0.9.20.10710 run a debug log, so I can check if there is a difference in the flash URL or some other difference in the connection to iplayer? That might help track down the problem.
