How do I get this new version? I was a part of the closed Windows Alpha group a few weeks back. I think the last version I had was 0.9.7.4825. How many releases did I miss? How do I get this latest one?

Mine only seems to be working for my personal queue. The individual shows are not populating.

Currently I am waiting to see how long it takes for the queue to update after making changes on the regular web interface.

I have an Apple TV and as of a few minutes ago Hulu was working both thru the new built in Hulu app and thru an rss feed I added in My Feeds to "Recently added videos".

In the previous version of the Boxee RSS reader these feeds did not work.

You guys are fabulous!

From: Boxee Blog

general — avner ronen on March 6, 2009 @ 6:20 pm

we just found out that Hulu blocked the boxee browser from accessing the Hulu site. this is a disappointing development since their RSS feeds are publicly available, and our browser, while optimized for a great 10 ft video experience, is no different in how it accesses this content than Internet Explorer, Firefox, Flock, Opera or any of the other browsers out there.

to our users: if you choose to use boxee as your media browser to view legal and publicly available content on the internet, we will do everything we can to ensure that you can access it, no matter what the source.

we’ll keep you updated as things happen here and via twitter (@boxee). and while some of the best things in life are free, sometimes you have to work hard to get them…

UPDATE (9am ET, March 7th):
hulu is back working. over the weekend we will make an update to the user interface that will show a status message indicating whether Hulu is currently working or not.

[if you’re in NYC on March 24th then you should come to the boxee meetup. we will release a new alpha version during the event and share some concrete plans for the beta.]

Last night it was populating my queue, and the "popular clips" from the top menu bar, but none of the shows would populate any streams. I was able to play Burn Notice out of my queue (pause still did not work. Doh!). Today nothing will populate any content. My queue will not load, even though I have 2 shows in there. While I want Hulu to work on Boxee, this crap that they are pulling convinced me about a week about to sign up for Netflix, since I have access to way more content that way than I do through Hulu. Way to go NBC/Fox! You have successfully driven this customer to the competition. (I also canceled my HBO to offset the cost of Netflix. I only have so many entertainment dollars in my budget after all).

I am using Boxee on Ubuntu and Windows XP. Can't wait for the new version to come out on Linux. Also, still crossing my fingers and hoping the Moonlight 2.0 (open source Silverlight project with Microsoft's approval) alpha that is scheduled for Mach 18th offers up some hope for those of us wanting Netflix on Linux.

Hmmm I am not sure what is going on. I uninstalled boxee and even delete my profile and the home folder off program files and rebooted and installed it again and still no results.

Just run through of what happened. Yesterday I installed the latest boxee but appearntly it was after the fact that hulu blocked the boxee browser and I was getting the the video is currently unavailable and that time the episodes were populating and can go click play but like i said hulu blocked it. Later boxee said it was fixed and tried to play hulu but this time episodes would not populate. I can browse the shows just no episodes populate. I even logged in my account on hulu and i tried to see my queue but nothing shows up there too.

So far I even tried to manually add the rss feeds into My Feeds but when I click on whatever show rss feed it says "no results found". This to me says that the rss feeds do not work. :(

What is an admin changing the status when they can and cant connect. Whats happening to make it "unavailable" is it they are blocking boxee via some type of user agent string or somtihing? Or are they using other means and the boxee team are just deploying countermeasures every time they block it?

Thats is the one I am selecting. I have the latest version ...25 and no shows populate. Actually I will install the latest version for Mac on my Hackintosh and I will see if it works there.

An update to my issue. I added the recent video feed manually to "My feeds" just to test and I get those episodes populated as to earlier it did not populate any show that I would manually add, but now if i try to play the video box would freeze. Hmmm

For a moment I thought hulu is blocking me based on my IP but I can play any contents with IE or Firefox.

Mine did that too, but I haven't touched boxee all day today and I finally decided to give it a try and now it works... I mean the episodes populate, but as it says in the status it's unavailable I cannot confirm that it is working. I can click on episode and press play but shortly after the boxee loader disappears it says video unavailable. I will wait until it is available and try then. :)

I'm using the Windows Alpha version of Boxee, and Hulu has been working for me today. I watched the latest episode of "Terminator:TSCC" this afternoon, and "Dollhouse" just now tonight with no interruptions or problems - EXCEPT that on both occasions, Boxee locked up completely when the episode ended. I had to CTRL-ALT-DEL to get out, and then re-start Boxee.

In any event, I sure hope Hulu keeps working. Love and need Hulu on Boxee! :)

If anyone from Boxee is monitoring this forum, please do us all a favor and stop broadcasting every issue you have with Hulu. You're gonna push them to turn off RSS all together and screw everyone from ever using it. Others have figured out how to make this work and I'm sure you can too. But do it SILENTLY!! These constant status updates and press releases discussing your progress on hacking their "fixes" is not helping anything. You wanna fight back, do it at the corporate level. But this software update battle is just gonna piss them off.

As if Hulu doesn't have a copy of boxee loaded somewhere to test their connection....

The only true way to stop the madness is to spoof the user agent (or provide a setting for users to do it themselves). That way Hulu will have to turn off their rss for all users if they want to target Boxee.

I'm not really sure if that's a bad thing. The more people that complain to hulu about this the more the content owners might realize the mistake they are making. Your kidding yourself if you think that they won't figure out that Boxee is working. Matter of fact I'm sure they check out this forum as well as XBMC to see the steps people are taking to circumvent their blocks.

Mission
Hulu's mission is to help people find and enjoy the world's premium video content when, where and how they want it. As we pursue this mission, we aspire to create a service that users, advertisers, and content owners unabashedly love.

Hulu removal from boxee does not line up this this...

What are Hulu’s main business goals?
Hulu is focused on helping people find and enjoy the world’s premium content when, where and how they want it, for free, anytime in the U.S. Our goal has always been to serve all of our customers, which include users, content providers and advertisers, with a high-quality online video experience built around premium content.

...hmm...

I think with more support from bigger advertisers, NBC/Fox may change their minds about Hulu within boxee. If the goal is to create a wider audience, then boxee seems to be the best solution to do so.

And as far as cutting off their video feeds via RSS, isn't that a bit harsh? I mean rss is there to serve a purpose, and for us to keep up with video content, so why can't we use the rss as intended?

I guess we need a Firefox, or Safari plugin within boxee, so we can watch anything without restriction, just like a computer and a computer monitor.

Mormegil
March 9th, 2009, 06:48 PM
Perhaps instead of writing letters to Hulu, we should be sending them to the advertisers. They hold the purse strings.

Update:

I have just completed the new episode of Chuck, and I am currently watching the new episode of Heroes. So far, so good...maybe it's just on brand new content the rss won't be interrupted? If so, I can live with that!

I just thought I should add that I use my 42" HDTV as my computer monitor, with the Mac Mini hooked up through DVI...I can watch Hulu content whenever I want by going into Safari...I don't like doing that though becasue I have to exit out of boxee. Thwarting the users through boxee is silly, we can still access the content easily.

I am using the same Dollhouse streams that weren't working the last couple days. I loaded into Hulu via the Hulu Feeds button on Video/Internet. Dollhouse Episodes 1, 2, and 3 all played. Episode 3 is played much smoother than Episode 2 and resolution seems improved for some reason.

Update: thinking back after reading a few other posts, the buffer always appears to be at 100% regardless of how long the video has been playing or how well the stream is actually working. Perhaps an underlying buffer issue. Choppy videos are not improved by pausing for a few minutes and resuming play.

OK watched four full episodes in a row through Hotspot just to push the system - ATV. Takes a lot less time for shows to run than even a day or two ago. Still a delay with Boxee loading screen and then video loading screen, but getting acceptable. All worked, only the odd issue during play (momentary pauses - no worse than cable!), commercials seemed ok, sound good and in-sync.

Watched 3 episodes of Adam-12 and 1 episode of Dollhouse.

Ok 4 more shows, all new or recent - lots more stoppage! In fact it seems that either the buffer isn't waiting long enough or the buffer isn't capable in capacity. Could be a bandwidth issue as I'm trying to brutalize the system to see how good things can be. ;)

The browser is integrated into the newest Boxee build for Mac Only, It may also work for Apple TV, not sure if that's official or not or what, if any issues people have encountered. Linux and Windows versions are coming soon. Basically when you open a Hulu video you should see the actual Hulu web page for a few moments while the video loads, if you do not see this then you def do not have the browser integrated version.

It would appear that Hulu are being dicks again and messing with things on their end in an effort to prevent Boxee from working. Yesterday everything was fine but today, shows will populate and you can start playing one. Next, the Hulu screen pops up BUT the point at which is is supposed to kick into full-screen video, it does not.

It would appear we are back to Hulu blocking the video content but allowing the audio to play through. I've tried it tonight on both my system as well as a buddy's who is on a different service provider and runs on a mac mini. Same result on both with the latest alpha (5534) build.

Ah the usual Hulu issues.... I am using ATV and hulu barely works or I should say works occasionaly seemingly when it feels like it. I tried to watch heroes just now - 1st attempt the screen went black for about 2 minutes then I got the video loading thing and then boxee crashed.... 2cnd time around same as above but video starting playing then froze... had to restart. On the 3rd attempt, same load time forever and then screen is black with audio playing for 2 secs then stops over and over until I was forced to restart the ATV. So is there any chance that Hulu will in fact work smoothly on a consistent basis or is this just a tough nut to crack?

I actually tried mine again earlier this morning and all was well. I had restarted countless times last night (both my system as well as my buddy's) and that didn't clear it up. However, today I gave it one last shot before tinkering per your instruction above and all was well.

Thanks,

An update: Well now hulu doesn't work at all. When I select a show it restarts my ATV... Is this a new feature added by the content providers over hulu :)

the new fix 5534 is currently for mac/atv versions only ..windows fix should be in the next version ..

Hulu is sort of working under Windows 5534 under Vista Ultimate now. But for some reason, when I click the Daily Show icon across the top, it brings up the Cosmos episodes! (?)
To get to Daily Show episodes, I need to use the alphabet selections along the right side - which does start the episode.

The episode runs for about 3:30 before it says "unavailable".

Thanks for continuing to iron out the kinks. Hulu is working great on my Boxee except for one thing: I can't login to Hulu in order to watch age-restricted shows.

Even if I add them to my queue and call them up by placeing my queue RSS in "My Feeds", Hulu still asks me to sign in because "This video is intended for mature audiences".

Is it possible to login to Hulu through boxee? Or is there another way around?

Just tried to watch a show on Hulu through boxee. There is audio but no video at all. Tried the other video sites and they are working normally. Anyone else having this issue?

It only stopped working after I logged into my Hulu account inside of Boxee. I just made a new Boxee account (and didn't login to Hulu) and Hulu feeds is working again. Maybe Hulu is blocking people only after they login to their accounts.

Well here is a new hulu issue to add to the list. I wanted to watch the first 2 seasons of Rescue Me but the rss feed for that show only goes back to mid way through season 3. So I added the season 1 and 2 to my queue and added the feed to boxee. All working great until I tried to play the show. I got stuck at the "mature content please login" screen. I am using an ATV and even with the iphone remote I can't input anything into these fields. What is even more annoying is that I am logged in in the regular hulu feeds area. Is there anything I can do or do I have to wait till these bastardos at hulu allow the good people at boxee to restore the app in its entirety...

malbert75
April 4th, 2009, 11:35 PM
Ok so like an idiot I discovered that my queue is in the hulu feeds app. I got it to play but the quality is so bad and choppy I can't watch it. I assume this is an ATV thing. Any chance this will ever get better?

So when I watch Hulu content via boxee on ATV- it generally plays for a few minutes and then says "this content is not available" or something like that.

Is this to be expected? Thanks.

I'm having the same issue, Hulu looks like its working fine, video starts up, at about 5 minutes in, the screen says "Sorry, this video is currently unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Could Hulu be somehow blocking Boxee again???

Some of the stations are choppy and some are not. Not sure why. Nova is always clear. St Elsewhere, Simon and Simon almost unwatchable. Comcast is my cable ISP so it is fast, so that doesn't seem to be the prob. Any body have any ideas on this?

I think I'm using 0.9.9.5324 (or the latest Windows Alpha as of this past Saturday - Apr 4). I will check as soon as I'm home.

I think the MAC version is a slightly newer version (533x?), maybe the issue is corrected in that version.

now today I installed the latest boxee and launcher version after I tryed with no avail to establish hulu on my ATV before .....today there seemed suddenly some light in the darkness but I guess I was getting all excited about nothing ...... ok sorry about nothing would be wrong because now I got the BBC iPlayer and a new HULU lineup and tested it right away after I had no luck before

BBC iPlayer - starts , then I can select a channel and a program I would like to watch but after a short loading period some screen representing the selected show will appear and a message stating " This content doesn't seem to be working. Try again later " - this message appears regardless what I select

HULU Feeds - starts , then I can see the lineup , after the selection of the show the episode selection will appear and I can select a episode .....some loading time after that the screen will turn white , than some hulu screen and finally a screen stating " loading video ... " but that's it ......nothing else happens regardless how long I wait ..... here I also tryed different show's with the same results

so what I am doing wrong ?

If it matters - I am on a DSL 16K line from T-Com Germany ( I do have two lines like that and one of them is fast enougt to supply the german IPTV T-Entertain so the speed could not be likely the problem .....so what I am missing ?

i decided to watch a show on hulu on my imac through Firefox--and I couldn't stand it!

Even though my iMac is wired directly into my cable modem and my ATV running Boxee is going over 802.11g, the experience watching over Boxee was LESS choppy--and unlike on the iMac--full screen!

I'd say the Boxee team deserves major kudos for rising to the challenge of the intransigence and bullheadedness of Hulu by coming up with a far superior solution to accessing their assets than even they provide!

Hooray Boxee!

Yah i never heard of Hulu till boxee on windows. got a few days of using it and now i think boxee and hulu rocks on my HTPC setup in my room. I tried watching hulu on their website and cant stand the look and feel. hell i dont get it they provide it free to the public those idiots need to understand we are using a similar medium to browsing the web like IE,Firefox,Chrome, etc etc they know just like the content owners that their days are done. I hate it why should i pay for cable tv or sat tv if i have to watch commercials???? TV should be FREE!!! premium tv i can see spending alittle for hbo or cinemax. but honestly all the internet and cable companies are good for now is data lines Paying for TV should be a thing of the past it can all be done over IP. another reason why in the USA bandwidth costs soo much is b/c they dont want ppl doing crap like this and hurting their FAT pocket books

Just wanted to add that Hulu feeds works great for me via my Mac and newest version! I love the idea of incorporating Mozilla into Boxee, well done! It will be pretty hard for Hulu to ban all Mozilla users...I guess we will win the battle after all :D

Hulu working here on Boxee. Works on my MacbookPro and my AppleTV. The AppleTV experience is a bit jumpy for Hulu. Especially if I pause the show and then resume. After resuming the jumpiness gets bad for the rest of the show.

It works though.

Hulu works on my iMac running boxee-0.9.11.5591 from the dmg file. However, I downloaded the source for that same version and used the build scripts found in these forums to build it on my Ubuntu 8.04 box, and Hulu does not work. It says support has been dropped when I select it. Why would the same boxee source version give different results on different OS's?

I'm getting this message every time I try to load a hulu video on ATV:

This video is not currently available at this site, but you can view this and other Hulu videos at Hulu.com

I can't believe they can find a way to block it even after going through and getting a damn browser on boxee, but hulu works fine on my computer and the message sure seems to portray that they don't want me viewing hulu on this browser.

Up until last night it was fine using the latest for Ubuntu 8.04. Today, nothing shows up in Hulu. It looks like it's loading, actually has progress bar that looks to be moving, but no video and audio. Hulu is fine outside of Boxee - just not inside of Boxee.

Just checking on what processes are running, I suspect Hulu is now checking either flash or maybe it's the version of xulrunner being used. Is the xulrunner version being used in Boxee different that what you would get from standard Ubuntu repos (Sorry, not familiar with where Mac users get their xulrunner)?

I have a Prism app set up to run Hulu that uses a separate xulrunner, and that runs fine, as well as the version used within Firefox 3.

I guess the other thing could be either the bx* or obx* libraries being used, since those are obviously not being used outside of Boxee.

The hulu plugin doesn't seem to have all the possible shows listed. There are two new shows on primetime: Parks and Recreation and Sit Down & Shut Up that the boxee hulu plugin doesn't list even though the hulu website has pages for these shows. Does boxee not automatically update the show list? Do we have to wait for a new release for these shows to show up in the list?

New Hulu problem: When I try to watch anything on Hulu, it brings up a prompt asking me if I want to watch one ad at the beginning or multiple ads like usual. I can't interact with it so it automatically plays the ad twice and then says the video cannot be streamed?

I'm having the same problem as TrenchcoatJedi, though I can't seem to play any Hulu video, even ones that don't have the new prompt. Well at least through Boxee-Linux (new app version) as Hulu still works fine on my laptop.

Hulu has done this for a while now on their website. Just wait it out and the show will start. You'll get one minute and a half commercial, then the show will run commercial-free.

This has to be on Hulu's end...

I just tried playing the latest Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. I get the commercial, then the NBC logo, then it loops back to the commercial again.
