View Full Version : boxee weather (the weather channel)

Essentially I'm just putting in what the boxee team took out. I need my weather and realize that team boxee will eventually add this in, but figure this can't hurt for the time being. I was messing around and so far I've got a button w/ icon on the main menu. Also have it clickable to get to a weather screen. I kind of just ripped xbmc's MyWeather.xml for speed of things. It clearly is going to need a lot of pretty formatting work, lol. Stay tuned for more and see current pictures below.

Not in a major hurry as no idea what they have cooked up for the 24th so this may just all be in vain. :p

Basic interface cleaned up, now working on adding in all the content. My idea to just rip the xbmc weather xml got to be too problematic, so I started from a blank file and am just building it back up. First time I've done any skin/content edits like this to boxee so I guess it helps me learn how things work/connect. :)

@DPK ..looking good ..we will not be implementing a weather tab inside boxee for the 24th ..maybe you will have a plugin ready by then..

Thanks for the encouragement marcel. :)

I've done a bit more, there's still a lot to get in to this tiny space and as I'm typing this I just realized I forgot wind and dew point data. I want to get at least a 4 day forecast in the boxee window. Right now I have current weather dropped in, however I'm rethinking my layout to be more efficient.

At a start/stop point. I'm not happy with the amount of data that the inner xbmc of boxee returns from weather.com, so I'm stopping for the time being working on visual stuff and now am writing a python script to pull in more data from weather.com for the individual days. Hoping to get some precipitation data and/or maps too.

Where I'm at so far:

Note to anyone following this thread, this weather modification has evolved into what will be a "The Weather Channel" plugin. It should be released sometime at the end of this month.

Had to push my release back a bit as I'm waiting to see what's going on with the new boxee build coming this week and the new developer api. Basically just saying that this plugin is not dead, just idling until the new boxee build comes out. :)

Great plugin, can't wait for the release. I have one question for you, how did you get the weather item in the side menu bar. I have created a plugin (boxeeVPN) that some people have asked be put on the side menu bar, until now I did not know that we had control of this menu.

thanks,

@DPK

Excellent work... looking forward to the final release. Have added it to the my Boxee blog.

I have a request... can you add support for The Weather Network (www.theweathernetwork.com) for us Canadians? Perhaps the plugin, can give a choice as which site to use. Next step would be international?!?! Actually XBMC gives the ability to view weather from 3 different countries/regions so perhaps you can have a look at their code.

Keep up the good work.

Peace,

Tranceparance :-)

Thanks for the positive comments. :)

The weather item in the sidebar is tricky as currently you can't do it with a conventional plugin. It requires a modification to the boxee_main_menu.xml skin file in the users ".../Boxee/skin/Boxee Skin NG/720p" directory.

It's not that hard to do. Basically you have to create a new icon file for your button (mine's just a rehash of an existing weather icon). Then you need to insert a new control button group in between the other buttons where you want yours to appear.

The next bit is to make sure your button correctly points to your applications window id, making sure to update the "<onup>####</onup>" and "<ondown>####</ondown>" values for the buttons above and below your button so that keyboard/remote control navigation will work.

Finally, if your button is the only new button, i'd recommend also removing the "filler empty button" with a control group id of 8111. Else it will cause the menu to have scrolling and that's just annoying in my opinion.

My tentative solution is right now give the user an option to download my replacement menu xml file. Hopefully soon I'll have a python script that will give the user an option to automatically write to the xml file with the plugins menu info. I'll be happy to share that when I have it finished. :)

Tentatively I'm only focusing on grabbing data from weather.com. Weather.com has data for cities in Canada (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/CAXX0504) and the rest (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/EGXX0004) of (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/IRXX0018) the (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/ICXX0002) world (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/JAXX0085) so for the time being this should work fine.

I am not saying I won't make an exclusive Canadian weather app for The Weather Network, but it won't be anytime soon as this version is pretty "feature set" right now. I have a few other apps down the pipeline after this initial weather app.

In regard to XBMC allowing 3 weather regions/locations, I was interested in that as well since Boxee limits you to just 1 but the Boxee profile xml has space for 3. I tried manually editing my profile but it wouldn't take. It appears team Boxee actually hard coded the source to 1 so there's no easy way to work around it. I'd basically have to distribute my own custom Boxee build with the 1 changed back to XBMC's default of 3.

To see this, check out the XBMC svn:
http://xbmc.org/trac/browser/trunk/XBMC/xbmc/GUIWindowWeather.cpp

#define MAX_LOCATION 3

Then download the Boxee source and open up that same file. You'll see for Boxee:

#define MAX_LOCATION 1

Darn it, lol. :p

This looks really good so far. Are you looking to implement a radar map?

It's planned, but might not be in the initial release. I haven't looked into it too much, but static radar images appear to be relatively easy to scrape from weather.com. I want to make it so that it will scrape the radar without requiring the user to do anything really. No weird mythtv style "define your radar image locations" here. The less setup the better. The only thing you should have to do is specify what location you want weather from.

Right now the goal for the first release is current weather, and a four day forecast w/ pertinent weather conditions for each day. This app will give more detailed info than standard xbmc weather as I'm bypassing the built in weather scraper and "rolling my own" so to speak. The xbmc code doesn't get some things like sunrise/sunset, precipitation, etc. I want that data. :D

The only setting I think I'm not disregarding is the weather location/region setting that you set for boxee. That same setting will be referenced by this app. So basically there will be no setup, just install and enjoy your weather.

Things should get rolling to finishing the plugin once the new version of boxee comes out today and I have time to figure out how to best integrate the plugin I currently have been developing with it. Should be released by the end of the month.

This is so cool and I can't wait to install this app - good work.

On my iPhone I have the weather channel app where it allows me to put in my location > Click a button > and it plays some video of my local forecast. Kind of like the local on the 8's.

Any chance off adding that (maybe to version 2.0!!!)

Keep up the good work!

You know you can get real time weather from the RSS feed of weatherbug, or build your own API.

rss.weatherbug.com for the RSS feed

or

api.weatherbug.com

for the API. You get a lot more than just weather/forecast/alerts.

One of these days i'll sit down and actually look into how to set this up for myself when i have time.

This is true, however The Weather Channel is already integrated into boxee due to it utilizing the xbmc backend. This app's goal is to try and sandwich itself in between boxee and that xbmc backend as best as possible. In the end it will also allow for the app to grow a bit better as xbmc matures and more of its content is pulled into boxee.

I have plans to eventually submit a patch of some of what I'm using to xbmc's svn so that it helps on a wider scale. That's a bit down the road, but regardless. I see your point though.

For those that follow the official UnBoxeed twitter feed, I just want to announce here as well that things are going to ramp back up. My life has been a bit nightmarish lately but is slowly getting back on some form of track. That said I want to get this out the door.

Features planned so far:

5 day forecast
current weather conditions
includes precipitation, sun(rise|set), and extra weather data
support for US and (most major) international cities
satellite maps
weather fact of the day
option to add button on main boxee left-navigation
weather alerts/warnings

Above feature set subject to change and upcoming version to be released may not include all features. We'll see what it looks like by the end of the week. Expect some kind of release next week.

Any other feature requests welcome via this forum and on this app's product page (http://getsatisfaction.com/unboxeed/products/unboxeed_the_weather_channel). If it's simple enough I might throw it in this release quickly for test purposes.

Potential weather information overkill:
http://i44.tinypic.com/5n0yds.jpg

:D

I think it's too distracting so I was thinking to replace the bottom weather content with radar maps (customizable). You'll be able to set two radar images (one will span below Wed-Thurs, the other below the remaining two days).

What do you guys think? I really want to get radar on here so people don't have to click their mice/remotes to another page. This just seems like the most viable solution. I also don't think anyone really cares about the wind conditions 3 nights in advance when conditions are likely to change anyways.

The low temperature would just go underneath the daily high, wind/humidity for nighttime removed completely, and weather icon for nighttime removed. My kingdom for more screen space!

Thanks. :)

I'm really happy with what's progressing today since I decided to hack the display down a bit. Right now I'm working on radar maps and their respective settings page to allow users to select which ones they want in a rotation. The rotation will utilize the boxee MultiImage Control as opposed to my initial plans to have just two static maps on screen. This frees up more screen real-estate for a new idea I had.

I've been trying to figure out how to shove my app in the challenge door myself since the announcement was made, lol. I'm going to see about perhaps getting a weather video feed in the app to watch your local forecast.

The weather video feed might not make it in the release tomorrow due to some issues I'm having trying to grab the flash/video out of weather.com's proprietary crap player. I have until June 14th, so there's time for a couple more builds before I can officially feel happy enough to submit the app for the challenge.

All in all, it should be a nice release tomorrow even though it will be missing a couple things. I tried to integrate the app into boxee fairly well so it should feel like team boxee built it to begin with.

Something interesting to note after spending about 2 hours of frustratingly trying to figure out why my attempts at loading a custom settings window were failing horribly.

Boxee/XBMC does not like it when you try to spawn another process thread while an existing one is running. It causes the entire media center to fatally error out and crash. :)

Basically, trying to click a "Settings" button while downloading radar maps is a no no. So the radar process has to be killed off or allowed to finish before anything else is allowed to take priority.

With that known, I'm back tracking and adding more error handling. I guess that's a good thing.

The initial first release is now out on the repository at http://dir.unboxeed.com! I will be the first to admit that there are some bugs, including one that can on occasion crash boxee. This bug only occurs if you get extremely click happy and don't let boxee finish processing downloads. I hope to have that fixed in the next version (sometime next week).

The "Coming Soon" text was something that's there as filler right now. The entire bottom right corner will be home to four mini-boxes that will showcase video and image featured content.

http://i44.tinypic.com/5qr8j.jpg

There are 32 radar maps to choose from too:
http://i41.tinypic.com/10y0x3r.jpg

I would not recommend enabling all 32 of those however. The initial install will enable two maps for you (current and national US forecast imagery) just so something loads on first run.

well, mine crashed real quick... windows 9.9.534. just started the app and it crashed in less that 30secs of using it. the radar settings menu was blank too. General Settings only had one. is that right? is there any way to change it from F to C?

rickh

It crashed pretty hard on my Ubuntu install too. Each time I went back in it would seem to get a little further along, but could never even get into the Settings screen. Would lock up Boxee enough that I would have to ssh into the box and kill the processes.

I'm looking into the issue and will try and get a new version out some time tonight or tomorrow. I'm pretty sure it's the radar imagery download causing the problem.

As a test also, can those of you with crash issues open up twc.py in the com.unboxeed.weather app directory of boxee and change this line (#44):

radar.getRadar()

to:

Test build going out shortly. Note the only purpose of the test build is to make sure radar loads and boxee doesn't crash hysterically. There are no major new features in the test build.

It's been a royal pain trying to get this to work since the developer api is basically sol on the windows version of boxee. Basically had to bust out the php to generate a feed that references another feed that generates itself via cron every night at midnight. :D :p

I'm probably going to rewrite how all of this is done whenever the api is supported in windows so the burden isn't on my server for the feed but rather on boxee for generating an image list internally.

0.2 will only support Linux, Mac, and June Windows boxee builds. I will release 0.1.5 which is going to be the last release that supports the non-developer api windows boxee. Barring any major problems, 0.1.5 should work well enough until June for Windows. It's just reached a point where I can't do things I want unless I use the developer api and stop resorting to crazy xbmc/python trickery. :o

I'll probably slap 0.1.5 up on the repository tonight and then 0.2 up as a separate repository entry Monday night or Tuesday morning after Memorial Day weekend is over.

Just tried .02. Still locks up on me. This time though, it looks to complete loading, then wipes the screen clean and I'm left with Boxee's background.

Is there maybe some cache directory I should empty out?

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04/latest version of Boxee.

This version should behave better as it doesn't physically download media anymore with python and relies on boxee to cache things. That was what was killing the first version of the app.

Try completely removing the app and close boxee. Delete the cache/weather directory and then make sure there is no com.unboxeed.weather app directory on your install. Then try installing 0.2 from the repo.

If that fails, can you post your boxee.log for me? Thanks.

More features will be coming soon. The next release will have some fine tuning updates, addition of some more settings (and letting you actually flip the switch between english/metric units), and hopefully introduce video/photo feed data to fill up that space in the bottom right corner.

That's the plan anyhow.

Uninstall your current version from within the App Box section of boxee and install the new version (0.2) from dir.unboxeed.com. You'll know you're running 0.2 if you launch TWC and go to "General Settings", as there will be a "Version" spec displayed there.

Can you (and jmilum) duplicate that and then send me a copy of your boxee.log file right afterwards to support@unboxeed.com?

Thanks in advance. I usually can kill off the problem once I see what's going on in the log.

It should work anywhere. Can you do that again and then send me a copy of your boxee.log file to support@unboxeed.com ?

Where are you btw? There could just be lag between you and the server it's trying to pull data from. The first time you run the app it downloads a bunch of setting data and stores it locally one time so you're not always pinging a server in some instances.

New version coming out later today that will support video forecasts and weather images pulled from the weather.com user uploaded image library. You should also be able to toggle English/Metric units if you prefer one or the other.

Note that due to the nature of The Weather Channel, only US cities/regions support video forecasts. I am not purposefully doing this, it's just the result of TWC only doing video forecasts for US cities/regions. :( As a result however you just get to see more links to photos by default. :D

Currently trying to debug an issue with a player.js file. Keep checking UnBoxeed on twitter (http://www.twitter.com/unboxeed) or this thread for updates.

Glad I could help your marriage, :D. On another note, here's some teaser pics for video in the new version. It's pretty much ready to hit the repository, I'm just typing some emails and running a couple more tests before committing to it.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2hzjrk6.jpg

http://i41.tinypic.com/id7t55.jpg

Right now, in this version, it's basically just trying to get video/photos into the app. Eventually there'd be support for some of the show streams, queueing video, searchable content, etc. Baby steps. Getting the weather.com/brightcove media player to cooperate inside boxee was the main concern with this release.

Brightcove put a lot of thought into engineering their player against things like this, lol. Right I'm basically monitoring their player with player.js polling and as soon as the option to maximize the video occurs, I do it. There's another solution I'm working on that will kill the ad that you're having to watch at the beginning of any video, but for now this works to get the average persons weather fix.

I definitely would like to make this app more and more centered around media/user content to make it more lively. Being it's weather and all.

TWC 0.2.5 is now up on the UnBoxeed repository (http://dir.unboxeed.com)! Hopefully it works without any major issues. This app is quite the data hoarder so sometimes it tweaks out. As a result, boxee 0.9.11 or higher is required to install it.

Enjoy! :)

Everything seems to work fine except the video. I can get through the commercial, then Boxee freezes and I have to ssh in to kill the boxee processes.

Running 0.9.11.5777M/Ubuntu 8.04.

Looks like it's coming along nicely though.

DPK I have been using you app since version 1.0 and it keeps getting better and better! You would get my vote (if I had one) in the Dev challenge.

The only minor thing is that in ATV the numbers are followed by a I instead of a ' eg 75'degrees = 75I

Not a big deal.

Also the advert at the beginning of each local weather video is no big deal either. I wouldn't bother busting your butt to get rid of it. Plus if Boxee goes global the people at Weather.com won't get pissy.

Really good job!

It happens on Linux too. But I think it was happening on previous versions too. Truthfully, I think I just saw it and didn't process that it wasn't a degree symbol.

nice app, have been following the upgrades along. a couple questions though. theres no way to enter your zip code or city. when you go to the settings you can move to the area to enter it, but no virtual keyboard opens when you use a remote or keyboard.

second was it looks like a pipe shows after every number. like this 67| or 89| just a minor annoyance though. great job

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I'm happy y'all like it so far. :)

Sorry about the pipe/I bug with the degree symbol. There's a bug in the current linux/mac builds that displays the wrong unicode value for the degree symbol. So I hear it's fixed in the upcoming version of boxee.

The quick fix for this is to open up twc.py in the com.unboxeed.weather directory and search for any instance of:

u00B0

...and replace it with the wrong value:

u00A20

That should get you the right symbol for your current builds. This won't be necessary and will be fixed in an upcoming boxee release.

As for the commercials in video, the issue should be resolved as boxee works out some kinks with the browser. For whatever reason I couldn't get the flash to load by calling the video via the hulu-feeds method. It would just load forever and ever. As soon as this is fixed, the video should load immediately without commercials and full-screen instantaneously. :)

Barring some unforeseen event, I am waiting until June 23rd before releasing another version as I want to see what the upcoming release has in it.

You can probably thank Avner for that. He went to do the post about this app on the boxee blog and then sent me a message that the radar wasn't loading. I quickly rewrote how I was doing radar to make it so that boxee just pulls in a straight feed and displays it. It was one of those moments where you're like "oh crap, I can't disappoint the guy in charge, what can I do to fix this quick".

In previous versions I was pulling in a feed, processing it to pull out what I wanted based on the user's settings, and then using the api to populate a list. Basically now I've shifted the work off the client side and onto my server side. I have the bandwidth available so it's not a big deal. Needless to say, simpler is better and that's what works best in this case apparently, lol.

Sometimes I over think things. :o :)

No worries. :)

For whatever reason, I just haven't gotten around to adding the few lines of code required that will let you set the area code from within my app as the area code boxee stores in it's settings file. I'll try to get this in to the next version.

For anyone wondering, this is one of the major reasons why this app is the "Weather Channel" app and not the "NOAA Weather" app or the "Weather Underground" app. I figured that since boxee already uses weather.com to pull it's data for the temperature in the navigation menu, I might as well be consistent.

Version 0.2.7 of the app is now available for download in the App Box! This new update fixes the english/metric settings bug and it also allows you to set the global boxee area code from within the app itself. This is useful as now you don't have to navigate down into boxee's own settings menus to change your weather location.

Note: This will not force the nav menu's temperature to be in english/metric. That data is affected by your boxee region code and I'm still debating whether to mess with it from within the app. It'd be easy to alter, but I have a feeling that it has the potential to affect other parts of boxee that rely on the region code for audio/video info. Still checking into this, but just letting y'all know I'm aware of it. :)

I installed the weather thing but when I try to click to change the settings it just gives me a blank screen. It will not allow me to change any setting, doesn't even show me any settings that I could change.

When I try to view the weather it's got all the stuff showing like the weekdays but everything is blank, I guess because it doesn't know where I am.

I'm trying to use it on windows xp.

I've pulled this application from my repository due to a "take down" notice from The Weather Channel's legal department and at the recommendation of team boxee. This is a temporary action on my part until either team boxee or I can establish some better guidelines with them. Hopefully we can work together in the end on this as The Weather Channel has some great weather data and media.

If that fails I'll just recode this to work with either the Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com) or the NOAA Weather Service (http://www.weather.gov).

Any chance on getting a weather app going with some other source. For me this was a big plus with dumping cable. BTW, the weather.com was awesome.

It'll be coming back soon once Boxee goes into beta in a week/so. It'll have a new interface to match the beta and utilize a combination of weather sources for info. The Weather Channel (http://www.weather.com) for basic weather feed info and The Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com) for detailed media (alerts, radar, satellite, images, etc).

Unfortunately there will no longer be video forecasts due to legal issues. The app itself will also be renamed to distance itself from The Weather Channel. Haven't quite decided on what that'll be though.

I would like to ask what people want out of a weather app though. Outside of basic forecast info and radar, is there anything that you would love to have?

I just wanted to kick the dust off this thread because I was *really* psyched to see this for Alpha, and hope that it'll be available for beta. Is it still in the works, now that the beta test has been released?

All I can say is that when I check the weather channel, I check the hourly forecast to see if it will be raining/snowing later in the day. An hour-by-hour option would be a great addition.

Talks fell through with AccuWeather. They weren't as open with things as I had wanted and on top of that I come to find out that their API goes down at the end of the year for maintenance. That's kind of crap if you ask me and not good for weather data when you need it.

Now to just start reading up on the Wunderground API and sketching out how the new app will look. Happy that I at least know where I'm getting data from now.
