View Full Version : New Iphone App for Streaming Music Anywhere!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to stop in and tell you about a new Iphone application that we have been working on. I work with Collect3, the same company who made the XBMC Remote and the company who was contracted to make the Boxee Remote.

Our new application, The XBMC Streamer, connects to a running XBMC host and streams your music from your house, to you… anywhere in the world! You never have to worry about running out of space on your Iphone again. I am sure there are few users here with insanely large music collections. Now, you never have to pick and choose which albums to take with you and which albums to leave at home. The XBMC Streamer gives you access to every song, artist, and album in your XBMC library. It even has full Shoutcast support.

If you want to see the application in action go to: http://streamer.collect3.com.au/

So, you are probably wondering why I am posting this at the Boxee forums? The current version of our application has partial support for Boxee. There are a few differences between the way XBMC and Boxee store information like Album Art. So, if you use this application with Boxee, you might not get cover art.

Now, if you decide to take the plunge and try the Streamer knowing that Boxee support is not 100%, please don't leave us negative feedback on the App Store if cover art does not work. On the app store we cannot even respond to comments, which doesn't solve anything. Instead, visit our forums (http://collect3.com.au/forum/) and let us know that you are a Boxee user who is interested in this application. If we get enough interest from the Boxee community, we will be much more likely to try and improve Boxee support.

Let me know if you have any questions. We are always interested in hearing from the Boxee community :D

Cheers,

Matt

Ok, I can see that people are a little hesitant to try the application knowing that Boxee is not 100% supported. That is totally understandable. The issue is that we have a hard enough time trying to keep up with XBMC, considering how quickly the project changes. To try and keep both XBMC and Boxee 100% compatible would be even more time consuming. If we have zero users from the Boxee community, the time we spent maintaining compatibility would be better spent focusing on other projects. However, if we see that a large number of our users are also Boxee users, we would be able to invest more time on Boxee support. That is why I posted here originally, to see if the Boxee community would even be interested in an application like this. If you are a Boxee user and you are interested in this application, I encourage you to say so on our forums. That way it will be easier for us to tell how much interest we actually have from the Boxee community.

I just tried the current version of the Streamer with Boxee and as far as I can tell, the *only* thing that doesn't work is Album Art in the "Now Playing" window. You will still get all of your Album Art while you are browsing for music, you just won't see the image once the music starts playing. Other than that, it all works great! Don't take my word for it though. Instead, I am going to give away a free copy of the Streamer. That way you can hear what a Boxee user thinks of the product. If you would like to try out the Streamer you must meet these criteria:

1) You must be willing to post your experiences here for the other users to read.
2) You must have enough technical knowledge to access your Plex host from outside your LAN. That way you can try both Wifi and 3G streaming!
3) You must live in the US ( I was informed earlier that the Promo codes don't work in other countries).
4) You have to post and let me know you are interested!

Cheers,

Matt

There is a program called "simplify media" that already does this.

collect3matt
April 3rd, 2009, 10:01 PM
Yes and no. Simplify Media requires that you run a third party application on your computer. It also requires that you make an account on their website. Our application interacts with a program that you are already running on your computer. Not only that, but it uses the library information from XBMC/Boxee so you get all of your media served to you same way you would from home.

Not quite the same but similar concept ;)

Interested. I'll give it a try and let you know how I like it. No time today but I'll test sometime later this week!

@collect3matt ..will it work on Ipod touch

@mikebeuler

I will send you a PM with the code for a free download. Thanks for your interest and I am interested to hear what you think!

@marcel

It will work with the Ipod touch. Obviously, you won't be able to use it in your car or on the beach since you wont' have a 3g connection. This does bring up a good point though. The XBMC Streamer works with all the existing Ipod/Iphone peripherals and it still really handy to have, even if you ONLY use it on your LAN. If you have an ipod speaker dock, you can take your whole music collection with you out on the deck, in the garage, or in the dining room without having to setup a full XBMC/Boxee/HTPC installation.

Now, just because the Ipod touch does not have 3g does not mean it won't work outside your LAN. You can still set up external access and listen to all your music at the coffee shop, a friends house, or anywhere that you can borrow a wifi signal.

We are really excited about this app because we find it so handy. I drove for two hours on I-5, going 80mph, streaming music from my house over 100 miles away and I never had any issues. Needless to say, it is definitely handy for road trips!

Cheers,

Matt

Hi, I'm also interested in trying the app out...I run Boxee on Windows, OS X, and the Apple TV, so I'm curious how easy it is to setup with different systems, etc.

Is it available in the app store in the US? I'm not seeing it, for some reason.

Awesome! I'd love to give this a try from my AppleTV (both Boxee & on XBMC) and from my unibody Macbook!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Question: Is it ever going to be able to stream video? Bump the app up to $100 with video and I'd still buy it haha

We have just sent an update to itunes. It has a few bug fixes in it that should clear up any issues people are having with passwords and a few other odds and ends. The update should be available soon!
I sent a free copy to a user here on the forums, but I have not heard back yet. I guess I will send another!

I'm using XBMC Streamer on my iPod Touch and I can see the artists and albums from Boxee but none of the actual songs. I'm wondering if the problem is the web server because Boxee hangs when I set (or clear) the Web Server Password.

The first time I set it there was no problem. Then I cleared it because I found out XBMC Streamer didn't work with a password. I was able to blank the password, but when I selected Done to close the Web Server Password dialog Boxee hung. It didn't respond to the remote or mouse clicks. I had to stop Boxee using the task manager and then start it again. Since then I've tried setting and clearing it several times and the same thing happens. When I restart Boxee the password appears to have been set or cleared (whichever I was doing before it hung) but I'm suspicious because I see the artists and albums regardless of whether the password set on my iPod matches what Boxee should have or not.

Just to make sure there are no permissions problems I've made sure Boxee's web folder is set to Full Control for All Users and the firewall is turned off.

Vurbal,

As I mentioned on our site, the password issue has been fixed in the new update. As far as Boxee crashing when you try to change passwords, that is definitely Boxee territory.

I don't think it should be a huge deal. Especially if you have the library organized properly. For example, you wouldn't want to have 10 albums by the same artist but for each album you spelled the name slightly different. That would add bloat to the "artist" node, making it insanely long. Also, you wouldn't want to "browse all songs" or something like that.

Sorry. Should have replied there. I decided to come here and see about getting help with the Boxee issue just to rule it out.

I won't pretend to know the ins and outs of iPhone restrictions, artificially imposed or otherwise, but is it even possible to properly stream video on the iPhone? I haven't given it an extensive tryout yet, but it started to load with a h264 mp4 file. Since the iPhone's iPod app doesn't support anything extensive, will the XBMC Streamer be able to use its own codecs for this?

Yes it is possible. Lets keep this discussion about music. Cheers.

I can haz a free copy? :)

I have already given out a couple of free copies of the current version here. I will give out another when version 1.1 hits the app store. It has lots of bug fixes, updates, stability improvements. Although, even version 1.1 is lightyears behind the latest beta! We have a ton of cool new stuff coming!

I imagine streaming music absolutely kills your battery. How practical is this? How many (minutes?) of continuous playback can you get?

I am sure it consumes more power than just playing music. However, I can honestly say I have never run out of juice. I am the type that plugs in my phone periodically during the day though, if that helps. For example, if I am listening to music in my car on my way to work, it is charging.

No worries. It actually isn't illegal either. Just for now, I would like to keep the discussion in this thread to what the Streamer can do rather than the things that it can't. I don't want this to turn into a thread full of things like, "I want it to make toast" and "I want it to do my taxes" ;) You can, of course, post REASONABLE requests on our forums.

Collect3 currently develops only Iphone software. That is not to say that we will never work on other platforms, just that right now we are pretty content with the Iphone.

Hello Matt,

I am very interested in trying the app...I have a new iphone and I am very intrigued by the concept of having all of my music available! I do however have a snag: I don't use XBMC, just boxee, so what do you mean by "partial support?" If necessary, I will grab XBMC for now if I can test out the app.

Thanks!

Hey Russ,

Thanks for your interest. The only thing you will not get on Boxee that you get on XBMC is that album art currently does not show in the "Now Playing" screen. We are actually working on this issue and trying to come up with a better solution. The problem is that with the XBMC webserver we can just "ask" for the album art and it serves it to us. Where as with the Boxee api it is not that simple. As I said, we are working on a solution ;)

You will still see album art while you are browsing all of your albums. Let's be honest though, most of the time the phone will be in your pocket. It really doesn't make a huge difference. We have submitted version 1.1 which has a ton of bug fixes and stability updates. It should be available any time now. Cheers,
Matt

Just an update. Version 1.1 has finally hit the app store. Looks like the guys at Apple were taking some time off for Easter as well ;)

This build has a fair amount of bugfixes in it. The username/password issues should be completely fixed.

We are working on some pretty amazing stuff for the next release. Lots of new features and some pretty awesome "bells and whistles" :D

Matt

I currently have the boxee remote and the xbmc remote. They are both great. Thank you for your hard work.

I've always used mythweb to stream my music, but a app for my phone sounds great too. I'll see if i get some time to try it out soon.

Glad you are interested! Actually, I used to use mythweb as well. The fact that it was so lacking on the Iphone is what inspired me to create the XBMC Streamer. We want to continue development on this product and push it far beyond anything that mythweb has to offer!

I'd like to try it, but I'm a little reluctant to buy it without trying it out first. I bought simplify media, but one if it's main weaknesses is the inability to browse via folder structure. Will XBMC Music Streamer do that, and are you offering any additional free codes now that v1.1 is out?

You can browse via folder structure. The Streamer was designed to work with the library, so if you are not using the library, you won't be able to browse by genre and other library centric features. Cheers.

Hello

I was trying to use the xbmc music streamer. But I dissmised :(:(:(. When I want to listen to a track it shows me "failed to play audio".

I was already installing boxee on my mac.

After I was installing xbmc on my mac, and with the xbmc music streamer it worked perfectly. But I would only use boxee.

Why is there at xbmc in the server area a username and a password. And at boxee only a password?

Why is there at xbmc in the server area a zeroconf publishing mark and at boxee not?

Is there anything i forgot?

Best Regards

Andre

I just got a new iphone 3g and am willing to give the app a try and give some good feedback! I have XBMC and boxee running on my ATV and my XP box.
