**EDIT** Repository is now working please download from http://boxeeatca.fileave.com using the "app box" in boxee.

I am proud to annouce the NEW Boxee@ca plugin, currently called ctv-feeds.

This plugin gives you access to the CTV video streaming site, it is an alpha release and there are still problems. Most of the problems have to do with the new auto flash player that boxee released in version 0.9.11.

I am still trying to get my repository setup (would really appricate it if someone could help me with it), but until then you can install the plugin manually.

here is the Link to the zip file (ctvfeeds-1.1.zip)
Link: http://code.google.com/p/boxeeatca/downloads/list

Until I get this into a repository that app box can link too, do the following to install:
download and unzip file
place the ctv-feeds directory (and all it's contents) into your [User]/Library/Application Support/BOXEE/UserData/apps/
update your sources.xml file ([User]/Library/Application Support/BOXEE/UserData/profiles/[boxeeUser]/sources.xml) to include the follow:
(This should be placed within the video element, look for something like hulu-feeds and put it after that_

<sources>
...
<video>
...
<source>
<name>CTV Feeds</name>
<path>app://ctv-feeds/</path>
<thumbnail>http://shows.ctv.ca/video/images/CTV.jpg</thumbnail>
<private>true</private>
</source>
...

Please remember this is an alpha release, I am still waiting for people to answer some of my questions in the forms about how to make the video playback better, you will see the following video bugs. (if you know how to fix any of these please, please, please tell me)
1. video does not go full screen. (have not been able to figure out the url parameter that will do this for us)
2. sometimes another image will flash up, this is the ad that is on the website (it is also flash) I think if I could make it go full screen I could fix this.
3. video sometimes drops down in the screen (this is a boxee video play bug as far as I can tell)
4. Sometimes it just stops playing, I think it is buffering but not sure.
5. Video Quality is not great. I think this is due to CTV.

I am also looking into the HD content, but the CTV is only doing beta level HD content right now and I am having problems getting it to work correctly on a normal browser let along on boxee, but hopefully we will get it at some point.

In Windows extract it to here:

C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Application Data\BOXEE\userdata\apps

and edit the sources.xml here:

Thanks for the plugin.
I have an issue with getting just the to CTV for Boxee banner, but not contents in the window below. I have extracted the contents of the CTV feeds folder in the apps folder, and did the sources edit as instructed.
I am using Windows XP SP3 and Boxee for Windows 0.9.7.4825.

Thanks.

have transfered ctv feeds directory to ATV, now I am trying to update the sources file using my ubuntu terminal - can't seem to get to the proper directory, when I input

cd /Library/Application Support/BOXEE/UserData/profiles I get the message "too many arguments"

I can get to Library but can't get past Applicaton Support

when I type ls application support is there but I can't get to it and therefore I can't get to the xml file.

Also if there are any ubuntu people out there, once I get to the xml file how do I edit it?

Awesome job. Only problem I've seen so far is when I viewed mad men-- about a quarter of the picture was cut off (for example on the title card, all you see is the word MAD), and the already identified problem of constant flickering in of some ad (in this case it was for salt).

Is it possible to get foodtv.ca on this (Canadian Food Network) and showcase?

Keep up the good work.

I have been trying to figure out how to make the watch.ctv.ca page come up in fullscreen mode, normally you can do this by passing a parameter with in the url but I have not been able to figure out if we can do it, I think if we could figure that our it would fix both problems. (assuming the problem realy is that boxee vidoe player is getting confused between the two flash components on the webpage, video and ad are both flash, and is not sure what to display so it is showing both.)

As for the food network, I can look into this once we I get my repository working. Marcel has been nice enough to offer me some help with the repository so I am really hoping to have it up and running soon.

I have Boxee 0.9.11.5591 running on OSX 10.5.6, and I installed the CTV plugin following the instructions posted here.

Sure enough, when I go to Video->Internet, I see the CTV logo there, and when I select it, I get the spinner going around briefly, and then I am back to the Video->Internet screen.

Since I don't get any error messages, is there a place where such messages may be logged so I can post it here, and slowly start the debugging process?

Can you post the path where you put the plugin as well as the contents of your sources.xml file. If you have an error in either of these you will get the behavour you are seeing.

I tried to play a Corner Gas episode and nothing happened after I selected an episode. Other than that this plug in works great, I can see all the shows and channels available.

way to go on the plugin! its awesome to be able to access all this canadian content!

however...
-there are nasty ads that flash constantly after a minute or two of starting a show... It makes it impossible to watch...
-full screen support should be the next thing to focus on (looks like your still working on it)
-on the top three sections, when i finally navigate to the episode or clip i want to watch clicking on it does nothing...
-is it just me, or is it choppy every 6-7 seconds? any clip i watch seems to cut out for a tiny moment making an hour long show annoying to watch... anyone else with this one?
-volume control does not work when i am watching a show... blaaaah
-i have no idea whether or not this is even possible but a pause button would be aweeeeesome!

just a few things I noticed.... i do thank you so much on your hard work to get this app up! thanks! :)

You need to escape the space in "Application Support", either by typing it in quotes, or adding a backslash character like

cd "Library/Application Support/BOXEE"
or
cd Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE

once you get there, use

nano sources.xml

to edit it. You can google nano to see what the commands are once you're in the editor.

and I can see choices for content, but once a show is selected, it pauses, and I can't actually play anything.

Running Ubuntu 8.04/Boxee 0.9.11.5777M.

**EDIT**

Actually, check that. I have gotten some, but not all to play something. I wonder if it's just a problem with connections (maybe being overloaded).

@mwpei - First, great job! I was able to install through the repository. I have the same issue on my AppleTV as previously mentioned - after about a minute or two, an ad is displayed that remains constant for at least one field (all the time), that makes the content unwatchable. Fantastic first attempt, and I look forward to future updates.

Thanks,

I am hoping that the boxee members that are talking directly with some of the content providers will be able to provide us with feeds that give us more a more direct connection to the content (with out the extra flash adds that are causing the issue). I am also hoping that we will be able to link into the HD content that CTV is starting to publish.

I have been trying to figure out a way to fix the ads issue on my own and I figured that if I could find a way to play the content full screen via the URL then this would fix our problem. To date I have not been able to fine the correct URL parameter. If anyone is interested in helping out this is something that they could do.

as with everyone else - awesome work.

With regards to assistance with URL for full screen, here's what I found - but then again, Im a complete noob and it may not be relevant to boxee.

I tried using wireshark to catch the data going to the browser streaming site when you click on the "full screen" button in the browser. There is none. The full screen button appears to be a local Flash player command.

Based on this, I checked into the flash player and found that the full screen on startup is disabled in the Adobe flash player plugin - which is what I'm using. (see http://forums.adobe.com/message/199862#199862)

Also, when viewing content from CTVglobalmedia, there are 2 flash players on screen at the same time. Even when you full screen the show you are watching, the second feed is still sending to the other browser window. This might explain why we are seeing these damn ads overlaying our shows in boxee after a few minutes.

If I'm out to lunch, dont be too harsh - just trying to help.:)

On a side note, when trying to select a specific artist video from the "watch.muchmusic.com" site, I can select "Artists A-Z" -> <letter> -> <artist>" but then no clips show up (or if they do, they are off the screen).

Using
Ubuntu 9.04
Nvidia 180.44 (GeForce 8800 GTS)
boxee 0.9.11.5777M
Realtek HD Audio via PulseAudio

Other than these two issues, boxee (and your plugin) seem to be working great.

thanks for you work, I really wish there was a way to clean up the feeds. We have one person that is talking with some of the providers and trying to get us a direct feed so hopefully we will be able to use that feed once it becomes avalible.

CTV News: Seems to work fine (but you have the progress bar at the bottom and can't pause)
Comedy Central: Seems to work fine (Add was flashing on top of itself and through out the video)
TSN: doesn't seem to work
MuchMusic: Seems to work fine (Add was flashing on top of itself and through out the video)
MTV: Nothing shows up
Discovery: Nothing shows up
Space: Seems to work fine (but you have the progress bar at the bottom and can't pause)

Great start really appreciate it.

No rush. When you have time, we'll all be thankful.

In fact, a paypal donation account might be something we could use to thank you for all your hard work.

I checked to see if my host provided ASP support but I'd have to start paying triple what I pay now. However, if we could help fund the app development and hosting everyone together could make it work.

This is due to the hosting problem.

Update on the hosting:
I did setup another free hosting account and I will release an updated version of the plugin in the next few days.
I am still looking for a better home for the asp pages that run this app, I may take the suggestion of others and setup a pay pal account so that I can purchase a real host.

I got my hosting thing fixed (hopefully this one does not shut down too)

You can now update your plugin via "app box" to version 1.3 and it will ref the new server address.

Note: I have not fixed any of the other bugs, for example there are still a few issues with some of the channels not always showing up, but I did reduce the caching so hopefully it will refresh a bit faster.

thanks,
mwpei.

I have noticed a few weird things happening with the boxee@ca plugin. I would like to know if others are see this as well.

I am using the latest version of boxee on the atv. (I can't remember the exact version number but it was 9.12. something, it is the boxee verion that does not work very well on the atv)

1. some of the text for the show names and such are being displayed as box's and other weird characters. (tested on older version of boxee and this does not happen)
2. some times the list of shows for a given channel does not show up after you click on one of them. (the first list of shows goes blank after you click on one of the shows) - I checked the rss feed that is being returned and it is returning the list of shows but for some reason it is not showing up.

thanks.

Hi there!

It's great to see you got another web host and such. This is my first time using the CTV Plugin (well, I downloaded/installed 1.2 but your host died so I never got to use it :P ) Well, all the channels load up when I click start the plugin, except for one or two. Unfortunately, none of the videos play, I just get a crash. Also, some of the shows have quot; in front of the name, and behind it. (Ex., "Get the F Off my Lawn" from Corner Gas looks like "quot;Get the F Off my Lawnquot;" )

I'm using Windows Vista x64 with the latest version of Boxee, 0.9.12.6569.

Good job on the plugin, even if it doesn't work for me! :)

I have been having all kinds of problems with 0.9.12.6569 and it crashing on my atv, I think the same maybe true for the windows version. I checked an older install of boxee and the plugin in works much better. I am going to wait for a more stable verison of boxee before I try to debug the play issues.

the Quote issue is a known issue but I don't think it affects anything, will fix it once I get some time on it again.

I recently installed the most recent Boxee and now the show listings are screwed up. Some show up alright, but a lot of the listings are stuff like &&##0000 or stuff along that lines instead of the show name.

Like others, I am getting the banner but no content. I am running the most recent version of boxee and apple tv.

Is this a me problem or is this the hosting problem referred to in previous posts?

Thanks

Alan P

Same problem here under Windows. Been that way since version 0.9.12.

It's been reported as a bug on Jira.Boxee.TV as APP-8 or direct at http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/APP-8

Just wanted to mention I added the repository through Boxee for Windows (which I installed yesterday on my laptop) and nothing showed up in regards to new apps (nothing CTV or that I didn't already have installed).

Not sure if that's part of the bugs with this app and the Windows version or not.

I do look forward to getting it working, and appreciate all the work that's going into it.

Hey folks,

Just chiming in to say that the Boxee@CA plugin doesn't work on the latest Boxee under Ubuntu either. I've added the repository, the application installed okay, I do get a list of channels, but the shows in each channel are often garbled and none of them work. It'd be wonderful to get it running -- is there any progress on this? Anything I can do to help?

I have latest Ubuntu and Boxee and I see the channels but the listing of the shows are listed garbled (garbage text), just fine, or blank. Some are a combination of all three, some are blank.
This is the biggest tease ever!

Yeah, been garbled a while. Some work, most don't, hit and miss, guess and pray. Kinda hoped it was functional. ;)

I would like to know if i may see the source code in order to make a python version of the parser you are using to generate the rss feeds. I'd like this plugin to work, but since the ASP files are not working, we are really at your mercy.

Let me know if i can take a look at them.

I've been readin so much and all I can see when I close my eyes are threads of those discussions.

I decided to join the forum cuz you guys seem qualified to give me closure.

What online content can I acces via boxee on my ATV? does the VPN plugin allow us canadians to go on HULU? if not, does the CTV lugin work cuz i followed instructions and I cant see any logos on the CTV page on boxee, i try clicking and get some funky symbols, but then i cant click on anything that works.

please help.

any clarification will be greatly appreciated!

Is there any update to the CTV repository? I have it installed on my MacBook Pro and Apple TV. I can see the shows, sometimes a season and mostly garbled text.

As above, my eyes are crossed from reading this thread from front to back many times! I've done all the work and I really appreciate all the work that has been done to get this far!

Where can I go to donate?

I have not had time to work on any of my boxee stuff for the past few months and it does not look like I will have time in the near future so I have asked for people to pm me if they are interested in taking over the development of either the boxeeatca ctv app or the boxee-vpn app. I did get one person that I have sent off the contact info to so that they can look at the code, hopefully they will be willing to continue my work.

I am sorry that I can't contue with this development right now, things have just gotten way to busy over the past few months.

I sent you a PM about this ... but for the interest of everyone else ...

I'm interesting in developing a CTV plugin for XBMC (what Boxee is based on) and I was wondering if I could get some info from you since you created a CTV plugin for Boxee.

I'm not familiar with how plugins work in Boxee, but in XBMC, you basically write a python script that scans a webpage and uses regular expressions to take out information from the website source code ... information like Show name, Episode name, etc. I'm assuming Boxee must do something similar, and instead of reinventing the wheel, I was wondering if you might have information handy on which websites you were scanning using what regular expressions to get the needed info.

The more information you can share the better. Btw, I didn't notice any source code in the files listed for download for your plugin ... would you mind sharing the source code for this plugin?

Thanks,
Harry

I wouldn't mind checking out the source for this too. I use the watch.*.ca sites a lot, and would love to see these fully functioning in boxee. I don't have much programming experience, but I can work off examples already in the code.

How about you put the CTV.ca app on something like Github or Bitbucket and then we can fork to our hearts delight.

OK figured how to add Canadian Content to Boxee and add it to my application. But if I select that app, I get the "page" with the "Bringing Canadian Content to Boxee" banner. But all the rectangle are blank and if I select one, I get to this second page with one small rectangle below the red Boxee logo and three lare ones on the right. In the first one I get funky characters like "square, square etc z star Yen symbol etc). Nothing like the window/image at the beginning of this thread. Bug?

I fixed the repository, but one note, this app is currently not being updated and I don't think it is currently working. There are have been changes to the base website and I have been too busy to fix anything (sorry). I have sent info to a few people that were going to look into updating the plugin but I have not heard anything about any updates yet.

I've also added my name to the list of people who would help get this app back up and running. Hosting it on GitHub would certainly ensure that anyone who wanted to help work on it coould.

The app itself seems to work if you click through... you eventually get to the content and some of it plays. Navigation is a little difficult though, since the boxes are blank at the start. I'd love to help get this working... It sucks not being able to get at the American content, but at least having access to the syndicated stuff on Canadian channels makes Boxee great.

I wish I could even get that far. Under Ubuntu 32 bit 10356, all I get is a brief flash of the controls followed by Boxee crashing with a segmentation fault. It's exactly the same under Jaunty and Karmic. Same thing with the NFB app.

Has there been any progress on this? A few web searches revealed that CTV would actually be on board with it. If I knew programming, I would give it a crack, but I'm kinda clueless when it comes to that stuff.

I've begun spending a little time updating this app to see if I can get it working again, and make some improvements. I was hoping to get a copy of all the source code. Does anyone have access to it, and would be willing to send it my way?

So, what's going on with this app? I added the repository to boxee, but it had no content in it. So then I figured out how to download the zip (http://boxeeatca.fileave.com/download/boxeeatca.feeds-1.3.zip) and installed in manually using the instruction on the first page, but I don't see the app listed in my apps.

I just downloaded and installed boxee a couple days ago, so I should have the latest version.

The app is working fine on my apple tv. Video is a little choppy of course and I suspect this is due to the hardware in the apple tv and not to this app or boxee.

For those using an apple tv, remember that flash is not supported out of the box and it takes some fiddling with 3rd-party solutions (eg, atv flash) to get adobe flash sorta working. Once it is, you can either use air mouse and firefox to fumble your way through the online videos on ctv.ca. Or you can use this app in boxee, which is easier. Video performance is the same.

A question: how can I correct the thumbnail images so I can see the channel logos? I always see a grid of grey boxes and it is difficult to remember which grey boxes are CTV, CTV news, comedy central, etc. Is there a line of code somewhere in boxee that lets me experiment with image urls?

The videos work fine (not perfect, but good) but the title images aren't there. Any help on that issue would be awesome.

It appears that this repository is down? I've entered the address and I've clicked on the links above and everything comes back with URL not found.

Is Canada content an option at this point...the CBC app, while it shows a lot of shows, when you click on them they all come back with no results.

If it matters I'm running Boxee on a vista machine

thanks!

The screen looked very nice. I'm new with a BoxeeBox (stand alone). Anyone got news or advice how to install the ZIP file.

If I unzip it and put the file in a directory on a web page can I install it? EVen if it's not fully working?
