hello, i was wondering for some time now, what device could be the anticipated <200 Dollar boxee box.
so i stumbled across the beagle board, but because i know jack about linux, i wanted to ask you guys if it was possible to run boxee on this device.
it seems that is got some graphic acceleration (needed for the boxee menu i was told):

OpenGLŠ ES 2.0 capable 2D/3D graphics accelerator capable of rendering 10 million polygons per second
http://beagleboard.org/hardware

It is HD capable and had an HDMI out

HD video capable TMS320C64x+ DSP for versatile signal processing at up to 430MHz

it got network capability and external drives could be mounted via usb.

some more specs:

The Beagle Board is based on an OMAP3530 application processor featuring an ARMŽ Cortex™-A8 running at up to 600MHz and delivering over 1,200 Dhrystone MIPS of performance via superscalar operation with highly accurate branch prediction and 256KB of L2 cache. Focal to Beagle Board experience is the high-speed USB 2.0 on-the-go (OTG) port that can be utilized to provide power to the board or to deliver highly flexible expansion. Standard PC peripherals can be connected to Beagle Board using the USB with a mini-A to standard-A cable adapter, DVI-D using an HDMI to DVI-D adapter, or through the MMC/SD/SDIO connector enabling a complete desktop experience.

i don't really know what it takes to be "the boxee box" but it seems people have installed ubuntu on the beagle board:

So the big question: does boxee run on the beagle board?

PS: you still had 50 USD left to make a nice box :)

1. Not enough cpu power - This is a page mode processor that takes way to much time to switch tasks
2. Not enough memory - there is only 128 meg of ram - non expandable

3. Linux - would work but is an embeded form of linux that does not have the libraries required to run boxee

4. It does run open gl 2.0 Good, bad - max resolution is 800x600 because the output is not HDMI it is Svideo

5. Cost - Board 149.00
Hard Drive 100.00
Keyboard 25.00
Enclosure 25.00
Power Supply 25.00
Mouse 15.00
MCE Remote 21.95

Rebuilt Dell P4 3.0 gig, 1 gig ram, 80 gig hard drive, Mouse, Keyboard

Run standard Ubuntu 9.04, Integrated audio, Small Form Factor, integrates into stereo rack. Adding 6 Series Nvidia Graphics card outputs in HDMI, VGA, Super Video and can run 720p content with no problems.

Cost System 100.00
Nvidia 6 Series 19.95
MCE Remote 21.95
--------
141.80 + Shipping

So single piece prices bought on Ebay you can build a real system that can be upgraded with faster CPU, more memory, more hard drive space.

AND, all you have to do is plug and play. Nothing to develop to make it all work.

thanks for clearing that up.

wish boxee would run on the xbox classic. nothing beats that.

Ram= 256 MB RAM
DVI out, capable of 720p hd.
hard drive, 100$ Why? Surely any 250 gig drive would do...
Power supply, for what?
Keyboard and mouse, if you just want to browse media not needed.
remote control? (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=6916)
so, the actual cost
Cost - Board 149.00
Hard Drive 59.99
SATA to USB (http://www.usbnow.co.uk/Adapters_&_Connectors-USB_to_SATA_Adapters/c42_49/p52/USB_2.0_IDE_&_SATA_Cable_(with_Power_Supply)/product_info.html) 31.00
MCE Remote 21.95

total = 261.94
