First off...nice advancement.

1st the things I liked:
The menu definitely is snappier
Wrong Video feature works now
Now Playing choice on menu (just makes more sense)
Graphics are nicer
Slide away menu bar allows for larger screen area to be used for good info.
Large icons for Videos and such...assume same on Music.
Added Hulu, CBS, Comedy Central, etc.
I am sure there is more but I only played a bit with it.

Now things that I noticed (Hiccups):
I only played with the Video portion since all my music is on the ATV...

View choice always defaults back to the display with thumbnails, I like the thumbnail with side bar info myself. Funny thing is that when it defaulted back to icon view, the icon for your view choice when you go right is the last one chosen, not the icon view. Does that make sense?

Sometimes after watching a video then stopping, then selecting a different video ended up playing the video before.

Hulu, CBS, Comedy Central...is awesome and easy to choose videos but major stuttering when playing - audio OK. Sometimes it was almost as it was stop motion with really slow framerates. FYI...I have hardwired ethernet connection to my ATV with high bandwidth internet with Comcast. Speedtest.net tops it out at 30mb/s averages around 22 (of course, this is when testing to my nearest city) and I know I don't have problem when streaming movies to my laptop. This might be a hardware limitation on the ATV, but just thought I would let you know that those great addons in the Internet Videos don't work - at least for me. The previous internet videos worked. I know that you are using their video player embedded into Boxee. Just giving feedback...not complaining because...after all...it is alpha!

Will test more and report back anything I find.

Great work! Thank YOU!

thanks mwunder

as per normal great report ..keep that testing going:).which addons in the internet videos are not working...glad to hear that the wrong video option is working for you now..:)

Hulu - it was weird that some were better than others. SNL Update was the best and only stuttered a bit. Simpsons - stop frame, Men In Black Movie - Stop Frame.

Comedy Central - Grainy and a bit stuttering worse than SNL Update above.

CBS - Stuttering about same as SNL Update

MySpaceTV - Many items just didn't work. I would get a black screen and the timeline showed it was playing but nothing on screen. Sometimes I got a MySpace Icon in red with !. 60Frames worked but stuttered a bit.

Of course, I know you can't do anything about the graininess of the feeds...this has to do with my 52" LCD TV and the quality of the compression. More of the stuttering I am worried about.

Thanks.

I too am experiencing quite a bit of choppiness and delay running HULU or CBS.com -- but really guys it's quite an accomplishment you have even displaying it... and I am certain it will get better.

The menus and such look okay... just the Flash based stuff... (which is understandable)

Boxee is quickly become the premiere XBMC build for Mac/AppleTV

Fix these quirks and it's going to be awesome.

hopefully we'll have a fix for hulu soon...
we suspect the thing is as mwunder suggested - not enough horse power on the atv.
so for atv - we'll use lower bitrate streams. see if that solves it.

thanks for the reports guys!

I used the patchstick creator that's hosted on Google Code. What's the best way to update to this latest alpha build so I can try the new features such as Hulu?

Thanks!

Hi,
-installed the update on ATV using <update> mode. - Successful.
-Return to Menu - Successful.
-Played with the new GUI. I like it. Sidebar on left and right.

Here are my findings.
- went into local videos - still no local videos shown. I had added quite a few in my sources.
- went into hulu.com. Played <my own worst enemy> episode. video started playing, but very stuttery. Audio went faster than video.
-went into CBS videos, <mentalist> episode. Unbelievable, played fantastic. Audio and Video in sync. Perfect!. so i figured it could be hulu videos having some settings issue...dont know yet...
- tried stopping and pressed menu to go back. control went back but video would start playing. Infact it kept playing even when i was outside the context and pressing other options!.
- exit works great. gracefully takes me back into ATV Main Menu after the apple logo.
- the speed has increased dramatically...if not almost instantly when using apple remote on boxee menus.
-went into rss feeds and played the video that was attached. it played perfectly!.audio and video perfect!.

I am impressed!. This is just awsome.

More to come later as i find out more!.

Thank you guys.
baksharp.

I also tried to update and do not have the hulu option. When I goto update on the atv, I see version 0.9.3383. Is this the version that has hulu?

I also installed new update on apple tv but am not seeing the new version (I installed the new version on my mac, and it is completely different than what I'm seeing on my apple tv). I even ran the update again and reset the apple tv and re-launched Boxee, but am still not seeing the new version. Please help.

Thanks,
Gordon

UPDATE: Installed new version of XBMC Launcher and then was able to install new version of Boxee. Love being able to view HULU and Comedy Central from Boxee! No stuttering problems. You made an awesome product even more awesome! THANK YOU!!! Like others, I'm not really all that keen on the new background stage image - I like the old one better.

I have to agree with everyone else that thus far the new alpha is nicer. I will see if my wife thinks its more user friendly.

It is much faster which make it much more usable. I still have not figures out how to update the clock.

My only thoughts thus far is that the background isn't ideal. While pixel lines look all cool they are bad for most TV screens to draw. Even my DLP Samsung struggles with the diagonal lines in the startup which causes noise. Plus there are some issues where the contrast is a little too much with the White text and dark background.

Even though Plasma and HDTV are supposed to be much better they are still some issue with really high contrast on HDTVs.

I sort of expected this, but Hulu is unwatchable because it just stutters. For me, Hulu just doesn't work well on machines with CPUs below 1.8GHz. AppleTV has a 1GHz Intel processor. Though the AppleTV does have a good GPU (NVIDIA go7300).

Anyone get Hulu working without stutter?

And to those who can't get it working... I loaded with a patchstick for the first time tonight, then ran update twice to get the current verison. Also ran the launcher update.

so i've noticed that the Revision3 videos seem to be very high quality and have absolutely no issue with stuttering ... what's different between them and Hulu or CBS?

also ... is there a reason why my personal videos (on a network share) take upwards of a minute to start playing, and then pause for a minute or so every 30 seconds? the appletv is on a wired network, fwiw.

For those having issues, goto <update> and update the launcher. I was then able to download Boxee alpha 0.9.3935 which had hulu and cbs in it.

However, don't get your hopes up too high, the video stutters to the point where it is unwatchable. It must be the format of the videos being played because I don't have trouble playing HD podcasts.

AaronX

hulu is flash video which is not video accelerated and likes CPU
Revision3 podcasts are media which the GPU in the appletv can decode and accelerate itself.

So flash video stutters because of the slow low power cpu in the appletv and because none of it is being handled by the gpu.

Yes, we all said that we tried that and it doesn't give us the latest update.

funny it worked for me just fine. try it again :P

Like the new update quite a bit, but as everyone has mentioned, the hardware just isn't beefy enough. A Mac Mini, however, should work great.

From watching top and the tv at the same time, the stutters seemed to correlate with the Boxee process and not the bxflplayer (which I'm going to recklessly assume is the flash media player). I don't have any developer tools on the ATV so I can't really pull a ptrace on the Boxee app to see where it's spending it's time ... it's just so regular that it makes me think some sort of loop kludged up. I also did a top while the box was just sitting still, and found Boxee running at around 40% most of the time.

Other than that ... works great! :)

Comments based on version 0.9.3940

First - Love all the new features. Thanks for all the hard work
Second - a apologies of some of these are redundant to previous posts

- stuttering on hulu content is much better, however still stuttering a bit
- ATV volume control (from apple remote) doesn't seem to work on hulu pages. Works elsewhere
- I think it's really, really really important when there's a quality choice to present the higher quality feed (like on most hulu content). It's obvious we're getting the 360p feed now. hulu provides a 480p feed on most content. I would prefer 480p (or highest quality) be the default.
- accessing my hulu queue would be handy
- on all the Internet content (CBS, CNN, hulu) sorting in descending date order should be an option - newest shows first.
- time zone is still incorrect - it's an hour off. Weather is correct city.
- launching into this build is not as smooth as previous builds. I get a big flash of white OSX finder just as Boxee launches

Lastly, for now, I really, really don't like the cliché background (stage image) in this build. I looked for a way to change it back to the green (not my favorite, but better than current) and couldn't find the option. Please allow us to choose.

thanks altonc for the feedback.
volume: known issue and a current limitation for flash based content. but we'll get it eventually :)
quality: boxee usually provides the higher quality (480p) version from hulu (where its available). however - for apple-tv the lower bitrate is used (320) due to performance issues. if you'll use boxee on your mac you'll get the 480p content from hulu.

the other issues are sent to the product team.
thanks again for the report! :)

Hi there and thanks to all the Team Boxee for this great new update.

I have not not noticed anybody else chiming in about this so I thought I'll give some feedback.

First of all Hulu is very exciting and I can make it work on the mac by masking my IP address but to my knowledge there is no such trick for the ATV so naturally, Hulu does not work for all of us Boxee folk in the UK.

Secondly when I tried to play some CBS videos, the videos appeared to be playing as there was progress on the 'Now Playing' bar but there was no sound or video. Just a black screen. There goes my Macgyver episodes....

Any chance of adding BBC iPlayer in there for us humble UK users? Obviously it will not work for US users but - hey you all got Hulu right? :-)

I love the RSS feed options that you can now add on line. Tested it with some National Geographic links last night and it worked great. A good idea for the future would be a Newsgator - like service for video feeds on your web site where users could use existing templates/lists of feeds to add to their account or provide them with a decent search engine within the web site for adding new feeds based on their interests.

On other points, I personally like the new styling and interface and I really can't wait for the Beta as well as final release.

Thanks again guys

Michael

On the same subject, I'm worse than our british friend Michael, I'm in south america and pretty much every decent video streaming service are not available here. @agentlame - yes i guess eventually it will be user configurable and various other configurations we had in mind. lets keep something for the next release :)

@michaelm - i think there is a plugin available for iPlayer. maybe a quick search on the xbmc forum can bring something up. anyway - we'll also have a look at iPlayer. no promisess though.... :)

@thiagopires - i know there are several commercial VPNs available that you can use to get an "american ip". i can't really recommend a specific one and i am not sure about the legality of such a solution... :(

@all - welcome to boxee and i hope you'll enjoy your stay :D

First of all thanks for the invite....

as this is the first time i use boxee, i found the gui quite nice. the sidebar idea is great.

I'm not in the US so no hulu for me, but i tried around the other RSS feeds, podcasts and what others have watched and it seems to work great. The only limitation is my internet connection.

The background IS ugly. I'm new and all, but please have the option of changing the background.

I have not tried loading local sources, but will soon. so no opinion there.

I only faced two problems, 1) error 6 (once) and 2) when i would pause streaming content, it didn't work. the media kept on playing.

Otherwise, thanks to whoever is developing Boxee, to those who gave me an invite, and to those who keep posting their experience that make our experience alot easier. Congrats..

Will keep playing around for a while now...

Hi guys

Thanks for the help re iPlayer and Hulu but unless I am mistaken the following are the issues with me.

1. The iPlayer Plugin which may work for some appears to be a desktop solution only and I am on PPC G5 at the moment I am afraid. Is there an apple tv solution?

2. The Hulu thread just identifies some new functionality within Boxee to add a proxy. Can anybody suggest a proxy? In any case I was under the impression that Hulu is clever enough not to accept proxy tricks. CBS will though so any suggestions for 'made in the USA' proxy will be good!

Thanks again for the help and keep up the good work, particularly if you can get iPlayer up there!

Thanks

I'm quite dissapointed actually.
My remote still doesn't work so I haven't been able to test boxee at all.
I've been waiting for this update since I got my invitation because it was announced that it woulf fix the remote issues.. but no go.

XBMC has worked without problem the whole time, as has the atv itself.
It's just boxee that has problems with my remote. The buttons are mapped wrong, so play is down, menu is ok etc. No button is "up", so I can't even add a user/pass.

I've read the "solution threads" but it didn't help. I've unpaired/paired, no change. I've played with the different values in Settings, rebooted atv, still not working.

The file that I was supposed to delete wasn't even there.

So what to do now?
My atv is v2.2, patched using the awkwardTV guides. (nitoTV and "Files" added, installed all the additional stuff via nitoTV)

Launcher is v0.4, boxee v0.9.3940.

First of all thanks for allowing me to participate in this Alpha.

My environment is running Boxee on Apple TV, with content on mac mini, accessing the content on external USB2 drives via SMB.

At the moment, the parts that still seem a little rough around the edges would be that some streaming content from Internet sources is choppy. Specifically, the introduction to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report showed this. It has been noted in the forums that this may be due to the GPU not being used to its full potential yet, so I assume that this falls under the category of a known issue.

The other issue is with accessing content via SMB. It seems that browsing for network shares is only reliable shortly after Boxee is started. As long as I stay within the file hierarchy there is not a problem maintaining the connection. However once I leave that view to do something else, such as view content from the Internet, then the SMB connection is nolonger browsable, and it doesn't seem to come back. However, pausing video and then moving around the interface - specifically to try to browse the SMB shares ( which shows none ) doesn't preclude restarting the video by going back to 'Now Playing.' Exiting Boxee and starting it again restores the SMB visibility for a short time.

If it's interesting, I've tried to add a Media Source via 'Manually Enter IP / Name' but I could not get that to work. I don't know the exact syntax to use, so I tried the ip address of the mac mini only. Perhaps I should have entered it as smb:// ?

One of the areas where I was pleasantly surprised is that content that is mp4 encoded via Handbrake using the AppleTV presets looks just as good, if not beter via Boxee as it does using Apple's interface. Based upon the forum comments about the GPU not begin fully used on the AppleTV this was a big surprise to me. I don't know if there is some hardware magic with mp4 and other Apple supported encodings, or if mp4 is just easier to deal with than however ComedyCentral is streaming their content.

Another benefit is that it seems that Boxee does a much better job displaying 4x3 content on a 4x3 display than the AppleTV does itself. I have some TV shows encoded from DVDs that the AppleTV squeezes between black bars on the right and left of the screen ( incorrectly assuming a widescreen that wasn't there ) totally distorting the image. Boxee does the right thing and displays the image without the bars.

In any case, I'm enjoying exploring the Boxee interface. At this stage, my only request would be related to the SMB issue above. It's not clear to me if I have missed something in my setup, or if the SMB code does something different immediately after Boxee starts compared to after Boxee has been running for a bit.

Boxee v0.9.3940 is still stuttering on hulu. CBS was a little better, but still quite a bit of stuttering. Thanks for the effort Boxee. I hope it is something you guys can fix and not a limitation on the ATV hardware itself.

Hi,
my findings continued....
- tried hulu, selected many episodes, everything worked!. Video not choppy or stuttery anymore. Very nice!.
- played movies and tv shows on hulu to test...no problems!..Cool!.
- tried CBS, everything worked!...Smooth video.
- played with menus, very nice!. It is very quick now.i like it...almost feels like using apple menus...
- i like the speed of the GUI..it has improved dramatically from the yesterday's old version.
-i like how the hulu interface nicely blend into boxee and vice-versa making you almost think that they are ONE!....Fantastic!.
- I DO NOT LIKE the background image....please change or give an option.
- the side-bar on the left - when i use the remote to select the menu, i find the text too hazy and dark to read. A bright white like ATV menus would look awsome!.
- Exit still works, exits me gracefully to ATV menu!.
- Family used the remote and boxee today, they liked it!....but they were able to confuse the menu and a video playing in background! using the remote...i told them it is still in ALPHA....they understood....they loved it!.

More later!....i love it!.

you guys(boxee team) deserve the icompetition prize..and i knew and am glad that you guys won!...congratulations!.

Thank You.

First off, for those of you that can't update, you have to go to the launcher, go to update, then click on the XBMC/Boxee launcher to update it first. Then it'll give you the option to install the latest Boxee build.

Second, Hulu seemed to work fine for me on a couple of Family Guy episodes, but they're just 4:3 content and not terribly intensive. I'll have to do further testing at another time.

The only real problem I'm having is that it seemed to just "miss" a good 40% of my music when I added the network source. XBMC sees it fine, as does my MBP. It's all stored on my desktop PC running Ubuntu 8.04. I, amusingly, can browse the share anytime and play what I want. It just won't show up in my library. Go figure. Any ideas there?

And now a suggestion/question. Given that Hulu and its ilk are flash-based, would it be possible to somehow use Flash 10? Apparently it offers quite a few speed improvements and uses the GPU for rendering as well. Is it even possible? It's available on all platforms, but I'm just not sure how you're implementing flash in Boxee. Just thought I'd throw it out there, though.

A great improvement guys thanks.

I find that the network facility is far more stable I am able to access my NAS very easily and see all the shares using smb on all my devices. Thanks for your good work.

1. I have three macs and two apple tvs. On the Macs Boxee is more stable but still tends to hang on exit on occasions and when it does not hang it is very slow to exit. When it hangs I have to do a hard power off...

2. Using the ATVs - the new layout is more pleasing but i get a problem if i have selected a video and play it and then look at the Boxee menu the video syncing goes crazy and I get lines across the display. (This does not happen on my Macs) I have tried a few options but cannot stop this happening. When I return to the video it is still in sync seems that the Boxee interface is not totally compatible with the video - not sure.

3. I cannot comment on Hula etc as I am not in the US YouTube Etc seems ok.

NB. I am not sure of the limitations of the ATV as when I access the same shares using a Sony PS3 the same movies (files) produce much sharper video and sound compared to when they are run on the ATV - I am specifically referring to .avi files.

Again thanks for the opportunity to experiment with Boxee as it does give the ATV a new lease of life. I will try some of the other features.

Good on yer.../Tony.
