View Full Version : First App Complete (BBC Live)

May 28th, 2009, 11:01 AM
Hey Guys

I have finally completed my first Boxee application after 3 weeks of learning how to code and about 10 hours of coding and designing in photoshop, to get the right look. I present "BBC Live" its a pretty simple application for playing the live streams, which the BBC provide from the IPlayer website (This means its UK only unfortunately).

Here are 2 images to wet your whistle before i release it.

This image shows the main overall look of the application, with a selection of 8 channels provided by the BBC

This images shows the video window when the application is playing a channel.

Hope you like it please tell me what you think.

I currently waiting for a reply by email from boxee before i release it, I also need to tweak some code.

Great Job! Its now looks like others can make stuff for Boxee better than Boxee themselves. If Boxee ever sells out or gets in cahoots with the the enemy, theres no stopping us from getting what we want.:D:D:

Now if someone can write a new Hulu application, Hulu and Boxee wont be able to beta test us to see how Hulu can block out viewers with remotes and a large screen;)

Lol one step at a time marcel, What is COD btw?

@foghorn2, Thanks for the comment,Though i dont think its better then most things boxee themselves can make it just shows that with little time and alot of reading (Thanks for the sample apps boxee) that anyone can make a fully functional application that is of use to many people.

Ahh 4OD yh would love to see that on boxee soo much, most wanted app in my opinion.

Can't wait for you to try it, should be releasing it within the next few days.

BTW unfortunately due to windows not supporting the new API its linux and mac only untill hopefully the next release. At least i'm pretty sure it will work on mac, i haven't been able to test it.

:) sad face I was developing the exact same app... http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?p=52011#post52011

O well! yours looks far superiour and I will deffo be getting it once you release it!!

May 28th, 2009, 06:36 PM
:( Im sorry lol, though i will make sure to try yours. Didnt realise there was this much work going on behind sceanes from other developers.

May 28th, 2009, 06:54 PM
that's the same thing I thought :) mines only rss nother special. I really think your looks nice and can't wait for the release! Especially interested to see if you used the same urls as me :)

I think i'm going to try and get other channels working such as ITV/4OD maybe there is room for a collaboration for a "british live tv app"

Best of luck with the ITV/4OD app i promise i wont make one before you this time lol. I have actually tested 4OD on boxee f but couldn't get it to play at all, just the push to play button, though it was only one small 5 minute test, hope you have better luck. As for ITV its using silverlight so if you have ago make sure not to test it on linux lol. Infact at this point an itv app would prob only work on mac but i like being proven wrong.

As for my urls there pretty simple and i think yours are much longer. BTW did you get the jscript to do anything at all?

May 28th, 2009, 07:22 PM
yea on second thoughts the ITV would only work on a mac and the windows version of boxee. I managed to get the 4OD to play using some javascript now all I need to do is learn how to do the in-boxee browser thing and execute the javascript. I think that's all beyond me so if you wish to make the app then go ahead!!

The jscript thing for the iPlayer is something to do with the iPlayer's interface but I'm not sure on that one. I left it in anyway :)

Well at the moment im still new to all this XML/Python stuff and what you mentioned is beyond me too lol. I dont think theres any need to use jscript with the BBC Live app as the interface doesnt allow for pausing or rewinding/fowarding anyway.

Good Luck with whatever you decide to make next.

for some reason i have the app on my apple tv... however unfortunately this is located in my bedroom. in my sitting-room i have a mediacentre pc running vista 64 and bizarrely the BBC Live app doesn't show up in the applications? I installed Boxee on my apple TV some time ago but only just now on the windoze machine... not sure what the problem is! Sucks because being in UK otherwise have no access to live TV...
