Hey Guys

Its been a while since i last posted about my first application for boxee, BBC Live.(Images here http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=9102) Since then i have tweaked some code and added finishing touches and i can now finally release it. Shawn (riegersn) from BoxeeHQ has kindly agreed to host it for me on his repository, So hopefully that will be put up in the next few days. Untill then i have attached the file link to this post for you all to enjoy.

I have made this application as part of the Boxee Dev Challenge so if you like the app please feel free to vote for me between the 15th and 22nd of June.

The app works on latest build for Mac/Linux/Apple TV. Hopefully the next release should bring support for Windows too.

BoxeeHQ have posted a guide to installing applications on boxee here http://boxeehq.com/howtos/installing-applications/

If anyone needs further help installing or have any questions regarding the application feel free to post here.

Application : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=38DPO5FN

:)The application is now being house on the official app box.:)

Thanks and enjoy

Hey marcel

I'm pretty sure it would be because of the time of day which you tested it.

BBC Three starts at 19:00 GMT and from the looks of the BBC Four schedule this seems to be true for that channel also.

Also i must state that for copyright reasons the BBC do not stream certain programs via this service, i can't list them all but BBC Three's Family Guy is an example.

I'm not sure about apple TV mozza if someone could test it and post back that would be great.

Thanks hope it works, i think that as long as apple TV supports the new API and browser feature then it should work fine.

Cool... Any plans to expand this to itv/4od and c5?

Unfortunately not, currently i don't have the skill to add features like that of 4od's catchup service or Demand 5's watch online service and hope that boxee themselves can do something with these if demand is high enough. Also neither 4 or 5 offer free online live streams like the BBC do as for itv, its stream is offered in silverlight meaning its a no-go for ubuntu but maybe ill have a look into that.

Erm im not too sure but have you tried going to

Video>>Browse>>Add Source>>Manually Add Source

Name it whatever you like and then Source Location is app://BBC Live

Using this way apparently doesn't add a logo but i'm sure thats not a problem.

Hope this works

Ignore my last post. After reading the how to guide about 10 times it finally made sense.

BTW, works like a charm on the apple tv

Gotta say mate, this has to be a contender for the boxee app challenge, I think this is one of the best additions yet.

I've not seen any other live streaming apps which to me makes this a groundbreaking addition. Im also impressed as its finally something kickass for the UK market who in recent updates have been left out a bit

Excellent work

Hey

Thanks mozza, being from the UK myself i know how were left with very little in terms of content here, and with the BBC supplying public streams it made sense that there be an app for it.

I will get the link working again for anyone else wanting to download it.

I have added your app to my AppleTV boxee implementation (both at latest release of software) and get sound but no picture. Any suggestions?

This is the first time i have heard of any user problems with this application. Is it all channels or just the odd one? I take it your from the UK if it plays, correct? What is displayed? completely blank screen? does the video even show the buffering spinner?

Thanks

kevina
June 12th, 2009, 01:43 PM
I am in the UK so have no issues watching the streams through a regular browser. It happens to all the channels I have tried (BBC1, 2, 3 and News). I get the first screen with the choice of channels, followed by the spinning logo as it initially buffers, then the screen turns black.

After a minute or so the sounds starts and the progress bar and time clock tick over as if playing, but I have yet to get the picture to appear yet.

The AppleTV does seem to be problematic on streaming video (Comedy Channel generally stops at first ad break), it is not a broadband issue as browser based streaming works without any issues.

I think it is a great app to have, hopefully I can get it working.

Damn it sucks its not working, i really don't know what you can do as i cant test it myself on an apple TV. User "Mozza" confirmed it as working on his apple tv installation. I have searched the forums and found that others have reported this problem with the Hulu application too. Are you definitely up to date with boxee? i think the latest release on Mac/Linux was 0.9.11.5777 not sure how the apple TV installation works though.

So you get the spinning buffering from the video itself or from boxee's interface, if its actually showing the video for a couple of seconds then this is pretty strange. Ill have to test my own install later, make sure it still works.

EDIT: It takes 1 minute for the sound to start, that is weird as playback usually takes about 10 seconds or less.

Hi Sniperking,
I have the same problem with the apple tv. After a minute , i get sound but no picture on all channels. I beleive the latest build for apple tv is 0.9.11.5774, which i am using.
I am really looking forward to this app working. Thanks for all the hardwork.

hello i've been meaning to get in touch about this. It was working fine then last friday i set to watch jonathan ross and had the same issue as everybody else. Sometimes i get sound but no pic but mostly i get nothing. Just tried again and it's same. I haven't updated anything which is pretty odd?

I'm going to look into this. Mozza, your problem is with apple TV too? By the way the app has finally been placed on the App Box so from now on please get it from there. I have just tested on linux and its working perfectly.

Hey

Would someone, with the problem, be able to add a source on boxee and have this as the location

flash://bbc.co.uk/src=bbc.co.uk/iplayer/playlive/bbc_one_london/&bx-cropbottom=35

Then report back whether it works or not.

If you don't know what i mean ill walk through it but its not to difficult. in a rush at the moment cya

Thanks

Azmat

Did you leave it long enough? Even when i try it takes about 10 or more seconds to even start buffering.

Next can you try this link

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/playlive/bbc_one_london/

Thats really as simple as it goes and if it doesn't work then i cant see the app working on Apple TV until the next boxee release at least. It is strange how it works and then doesn't all of a sudden.

This link also takes a while to start so please leave it for about 30 seconds.

I have reinstalled from the App Box source and it seems to be exhibiting the same problems.

Boxee gives the spinning signal in the initial loading, followed by a black screen and eventually sound but unfortunately no pictures.

EDIT: all software is at the latest release that I am aware of

June 15th, 2009, 04:10 PM
hello i tested both feeds and got the same. Sound comes on quick and doesnt stutter or anything. I ran all feeds for a good few minutes

Sniperking
June 15th, 2009, 04:31 PM
Hey

Thanks for testing the posted feeds. The posted link to the application and the application on the "App Boxee" are exactly the same,no tweaks. I am looking into maybe adding more channels to this app in the future so if anyone wants to suggest any then you're more than welcome just make sure they're legal feeds from the owners website.

Unfortunately i don't think there is anything i can do, code wise to make the app work on apple TV until boxee updates their software, as this problem is also common with hulu on the same platform.

Here is another feed which was created by another developer "stevyd10"

rss://www.browserdash.com/bbc-live.xml

If this works then i will be able to fix my app, though sadly i doubt it will.

Hi guys

I have to say the idea of this app is amazing and a real step forward for boxee. I installed the app last night on my macbook and am having similar issues to the apple tv guys i think. within about 5 seconds i am getting sound but no picture it does not look like there is a problem with the buffering so i really dont know what is wrong it could be something that i am doing but it installed no problems and everything works well apart from no picture has anyone got any suggestions.

June 16th, 2009, 06:37 AM
Seriously, this is strange. The app uses really the simplest code possible i think so i doubt it anything in that department. Have you tested the feeds posted above to see if you get a different experience?

Ill take a look at the code soon to see if there are any obvious errors.

O whilst i am here i have found another feed for you to try,Its different from the others so may work.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_one_london/colour/black

If this does work then i'm sure i could make a separate app for those having the problem.

:)Voting has now started for the Dev Challenge, so if you like the app please show your support. Thank you.:)

I hope that link works because then i could get a new version out in a few hours. Though i don't see it happening, as there may be a problem with flash on mac/Apple TV boxee version, i don't know.

"I have already voted this app has great potential!"

Thanks for you vote, much appreciated. Currently the application is UK only though i plan to add extra content (BBC Youtube Channel etc) and maybe other world viewable channels.

Hi Sniperking,

I tried the alternative feed (rss://browserdash....) and it works. I have not tried anything else and your original app still gives me sound and no pictures.

Thanks for the alternative feed, if you get 4od or 5 going it would be awesome, but I am grateful to have at least BBC.

That's great to hear, i may try and contact the Dev who produced that XML and ask for his help if i need it.

Can this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_one_london/colour/black

which i posted earlier also be confirmed as not working then? I noticed that before the link was cut off a bit.

Hey Guys

Have been messing with the code to see if there were any major differences between my application and the working XML file. I couldn't really see any but decided to tidy up the code in an effort to make it more boxee friendly, So if i post it here can i get someone to test it.

When added to BBC Live , the XML feed did work with my application, but I'm definitely not going to steal someone else's hard work.

Please test this. Only real differences are i have changed : = / signs to be more formatted for boxee. I also added the width and height attribute. Small things but then as i don't know what is wrong, i need to try everything.

flash://www.bbc.co.uk/src=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fiplayer%2Fplayliv e%2Fbbc_one_london%2F&bx-cropbottom=35&width=640&height=395

I wouldn't bother mate i'm pretty sure it doesn't work.

:)BUT i have found a solution that is working on my windows OS, will be posting up a link for you to try later that i'm pretty sure it will work on Mac also, and if it does the new version will be released shortly after.

Sniperking
June 17th, 2009, 11:22 AM
Well I'm getting really pi:mad::mad:ed of now, links working on windows don't work at all on ubuntu so making cross platform code is not possible unless i make it rss which i think i am going to have to do.

Without a mac i just cant test it myself and that's really annoying. When i add code via sources boxee adds amp; onto amp; which i already write. but if i edit it once its already in the sources xml it works fine.

I'm going to carry on now.Been working now non stop for bout 5 hours and not really gotten anywhere.

Hey guys since i posted this message. i have finished changing links in the code and sent the application to be updated on the "App Store"

I still don't know if it works on mac but will hopefully receive a reply soon. New Update replaces BBC Parliament with BBC Persian until further notice.

If you wish to regain BBC Parliament please contact me and i can guide you through it.

Sniperking
June 29th, 2009, 08:54 AM
Hey

Yes i'm sure i fixed the errors users were having with the program a few weeks back, i think that the latest boxee update has rendered the app unusable on all platforms currently.

I am looking into this now whilst i try to add all new radio feeds to the application.

Sniperking
July 16th, 2009, 11:58 AM
Hey guys just a quick update on progress.

Well BBC live has been on boxee now for maybe a month or two and as many of you know, it has spent most of its time inoperable. I have been hard at work now for a few weeks, most days, updating the application making it support RSS so it will be easier in the future to add channels if the BBC decide to make them available.

Currently i am working on adding Radio stations to the application and hope to have them all available, including all local stations, in the next release.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for additions to the application.

Thanks

P.S. New version should be done in next few weeks.

Haven't had a chance to use Boxee apps for a few weeks. Wanted to check out some BBC Live content and noticed that BBC Live wasn't showing up in my Video Apps (just a BBC icon). So I went into the App Box/New Applications and clicked on BBC Live (v. 2.1). It says it installed but when I go back to Video Apps, it's not there.

Anyone else have this problem?

Yep - only more extreme! After very first use, BBC Live disappeared completely. Wasn't even in the AppBox. I managed to fix that by installing the plugin manually and calling it BBC Live 2 - but even when I add it from there, it still doesn't show up in Applications. I am UK based - have no problems with the iPlayer etc.

Perplexed. The app worked perfectly first time - would love to have it back!

I have the same issue on 2 machines (both running Vista x32) running 0.9.14.6993.

Had a similar issue on my HTPC. Installed Boxee, ran BBC Live one time. Quit Boxee and didn't really notice that Live wasn't there anymore.

Went back to Boxee the next day and noticed that the Live icon had gone, but iPlayer still appeared and worked fine.

I then installed Boxee on my main desktop PC for the first time, and noticed BBC Live icon in the apps. Loaded it up and watched a little with no problems, then exited the Live app and again the icon had disappeared.

Very strange issue. I guess I'd have to re-install to see the app again.

Hi,

It would be great if this app could honour Boxee's own HTTP proxy settings.

Even if HTTP proxies are configured in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist, direct HTTP connections are still seen.

Keep up the good work :)
