[FAQ] Access media shares on Windows XPSP2 from Apple TV

On Windows XPSP2 machine,

- right click on folder to be shared
- choose sharing and security option
- set radio button to share this folder
- change name of share if required
- press OK

- make sure that you have a username and password ready for the XPS2 machine that is NOT a DOMAIN user. This user has to be a WORKGROUP user, even if you normally use the machine in DOMAIN mode. You will have created at least one WORKGROUP user when you initially set up the machine out of the box. This is important.

On Boxee on Apple TV,

- log in as normal
- choose settings from left navigation menu
- choose Network settings box
- go to SMB client
- make sure that the username is for the WORKGROUP user above
- make sure that the password is for the WORKGROUP user above
- leave WINS-server blank
- make sure that workgrop says WORKGROUP

- press menu to get to settings menu
- press menu again to get to main Boxee screen

- choose video menu (all my shared media is video)
- choose browse
- choose network
- your windows network name should appear
- select network
- a list of the machines on your network should appear
- choose the machine with the share on it
- the name of your shared folder should appear
- select shared folder
- a list of the media in the shared folder should appear
- allow the thumbnails to be populated

that's it

hope this helps

this is great

Tony - this is great, it appears to be exactly what I've been looking for in the way of a guide as I run XP SP2.

However, could you or someone else provide a bit more detail on this statement, I don't really understand what I need to do here. My machine was already set up and I just recently added a workgroup with the name WORKGROUP to match Boxee:

"make sure that you have a username and password ready for the XPS2 machine that is NOT a DOMAIN user. This user has to be a WORKGROUP user, even if you normally use the machine in DOMAIN mode. Doesn't work for me

Whatever I do, my Boxee on appleTV does not see my PC.

I can see the shares and the media it just doesn't play.

The video's will play once right after a new boot and then doesn't. You'll get the loading flash and back to the main screen you where just at.

I think he means create a user in the user account area solely for this purpose like boxee/password. giving you the ability to log into that machine and under the WORKGROUP workgroup.

Hi guys, this is my first post.

I have had boxee on my PC and it worked awesome. It scanned the shares I had and automatically found all the meta data (ie iMdb, etc) that was required for them.

I decided to upgrade to appletv. Purchased it, had it do the auto upgrade to 2.3, and ran the patchstick. Everything seems to be working fine.

I can use the appletv to talk back to my PC shares (which are external USB drives), but what appletv WONT do is automatically populate my "movies" menu item in boxee side menu.

What I have to do is to manually go to each file within each folder and click on "recognize". its very time consuming. Is there a way to have boxee automatically crawl through all my folders and do its own meta data search??

thanks!

hi all, so i am running XPSP3, should that make a difference? i have gone thru and followed the steps as best i can but everytime i try and browse in boxee to find the files it gives me an error 2 that it cannot connect, any advise or help? please?

I am having a similar problem. Boxee sees the media, but won't play it. Files are avi and mpg4.

The same remote files play find on XBMC.

Any ideas of what to do?
