Default Boxee Coming to the UK - Its official!

We’re throwing our very first international event in London on June 7th. Sign up to join us here!

Since launching the Boxee Box last November, we’ve seen a lot of growth in the UK and with lots of great broadcast content appearing online through services like BBC, SeeSaw, LoveFilm, BlinkBox, and others it’s a market that’s ripe for our type of TV. We can’t wait to visit with our London users, demo a few new partners, and raffle off some Boxee Boxes… and hopefully enjoy a good pint.

Since we’re new to London we’re asking people for 5 quid for the RSVP to better gauge head count. In addition to getting you in, that 5′er gets you:

a special edition Boxee T-Shirt created just for the London event
a Boxee sticker
a free drink
In addition to the upcoming event, we’d also like to announce that Wil Stephens has officially joined the Boxee team. Wil shall be heading up our business development and marketing efforts in Europe, and has already been making the rounds at events like MIPTV to help bring more European content onto the platform. His expertise in digital media from running Cube (a company he founded) made him a logical fit as we look to become the dominant software provider for set top boxes in Europe . We’ll also be hiring a few more positions in the London office so follow us on Twitter and Facebook to see an alert when those job posts go up.

Avner, Wil, Rob and I will all be at the event so you’ll have a chance to catch up with quite a few members of team Boxee whether you’re an app developer, content provider, user, or journalist.

Will be interesting to see what the new partners are, especially with Lovefilm being mentioned. Lets hope the new update will fix any problems and they get the iplayer app working before they get all the magazines and papers talking about it again.

Default Seriously

If you have an event to show off a media player to the UK market, and it can't, easily, or natively play the biggest, legitimate repository of media content in the country (BBC iPlayer) , no one will take you seriously.

The box can play all the iplayer content, it just doesn't have an app due to the unique way the BBC is funded.

Set up RSS feeds to the website or search through the TVshows section. I prefer the RSS feed method because then you can link to the Live streams too.

I honestly cannot believe that a box of this nature and development team, cannot provide a consistent interface to their media. The intergrated iplayer app in my Samsung HD TV has more functionality and it just works.

Coming back to the original point. If you have to say something like "yeah, you can hack support of iPlayer into this 200 quid box" , people arent going to rush out and buy it.

The iPlayer is the core of the british entertainment experience now. Anything less than what a web browser can provide should be seen as a massive failure of the product and a major oversight by the development team.

But the TV shows although it is an absolute mess does have most/all of the iplayer content.

Don't get me wrong though, I want an app for iplayer as the tvshow list is terrible but you can't say it doesn't have the comment.

I think it's great news the boxee team are coming to the uk. It's a shame I won't be able to make it but I think it shows they are committed to not forgetting about us.

I don't even use the Iplayer at the moment, but would love to have a proper lovefilm app.
